Lightbox Interactive Shifts Focus to iOs, Confirms Layoffs

Posted on October 18, 2012 by Rae Michelle Richards

The studio behind Sony’s exclusive sci-fi action game Starhawk, Lightbox Interactive, has seen sizable layoffs as well as a shift in platforms. The company confirmed yesterday that they will lay-off 24 employees from their Texas studio as of Friday and that the company will no longer be developing for the PlayStation 3 for the time being. Instead they will focus their development efforts on iOs and other mobile platforms.

The company’s president had this to say to the media:

“Lay-offs always suck but they are an unfortunate reality of business sometimes. The best we can do is try and treat our people with respect during the shocking transition of a lay-off,

It is unfortunate to hear that anyone has lost their jobs. As this console generation gets long in the tooth I’m sure we will see more developers shed a little weight as  they prepare to experiment with the next generation of hardware.

Lightbox Interactive only commercially available games was this past Spring’s Starhawk. They were formed in 2009, signing a multi-title deal with Sony Computer Entertainment America. It is  unknown how this shift in development will affect any of the remaining titles that were part of that deal.

Second Borderlands 2 DLC Leaked Via Trophies

Posted on October 18, 2012 by Rae Michelle Richards

Borderlands 2

Gearbox Software just can’t seem to keep the DLC for Borderlands 2 a secret now can they? Are after the reveal of the first of several planned DLC add-ons earlier in the month through PS3 trophies, users have now mentioned “Mr.Torgue’s Campaign of Carnage”.

Spotted by an eagle eyed reader over at Joystiq the description of this potential DLC reads “Mr Torgue’s Campaign of Carnage 0%”.  Rumors surrounding the existence of the Torgue DLC sprang up in September just after the game launched.

Keep your eyes on your trophies vault hunters, they might just lead you to the next big treasure!

LittleBigPlanet Vita | Review

Posted on October 17, 2012 by Jason Bassett

What do you get when you take a humongous game that is based on your own imagination and you shrink it down to fit in your hands? That is LittleBigPlanet for the Playstation Vita. LBP Vita is an original release for the Sony’s newest handheld and one that many gamers have been waiting for and it’s now here to play. So what makes this version of Little BigPlanetVita so endearing to fans is it’s cutesy way of telling a story, it’s simple yet in-depth gameplay that just has a way with you when you play a game like this. If you have ever played a licensed game that was awesome back in the day like Cool Spot or one of the older Nickelodeon games, LittleBigPlanet will make you feel like you’re a kid again.Read More

NBA 2K13 | Review

Posted on October 17, 2012 by Broken Joysticks

It’s October so it’s probably that time again for Visual Concepts and 2K Sports annual iteration of the NBA 2K series with NBA 2K13. NBA 2K13 was released on October 2nd across all major platforms (360, Wii, PS3, PC, Mobile, PSP & Wii-U) the only system that is not receiving the title are the Nintendo 3DS and oddly the PlayStation Vita. The cover artists for this year’s game are Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers and Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls. This marks the first time three stars together make up the cover as previously only one superstar would grace it (NBA 2K12 had three different covers with one superstar each). This review is based on my experiences on the Xbox 360 version of the game.Read More

Assassin’s Creed III Trailer: Maps, Perks, & Characters

Posted on October 17, 2012 by Joshua Rust

Assassin’s Creed III is nearly here. If you’re anything like us, the impending release is driving you crazy. My opinion is that Ubisoft started off with a great idea with the first game. From there, each new game has only gotten more expansive and more impressive.

Ubisoft has released a trailer showing off some of the mulitplayer for Assassin’s Creed III. Including some of the maps you will play on, as well as the playable characters and their perks. Check it out!

For the US:

[youtube id=”Iwzw4948YNc” width=”600″ height=”350″]

For the UK:

[youtube id=”Cl3hfSZtudM” width=”600″ height=”350″]

Don’t ask me why, but Ubisoft decided to region lock their videos…hence the two different videos above. Assassin’s Creed III is poised to strike October 30th! Requiescat In Pace.

Ubisoft Is Suing The Black Eyed Peas For A Million Bucks

Posted on October 17, 2012 by Seung Lee

A million dollars is a ton of money, no matter what type of life you live. That’s probably why Ubisoft is jumping on an opportunity to sue the Black Eyed Peas. BEP Music LLC, a company that owns the Black Eyed Peas trademark, was met with an unpleasant lawsuit for a million dollars yesterday.

Ubisoft is accusing BEP of breaching a contract regarding an iOS version of The Black Eyed Peas Experience. Apparently, the contract states that the popular band could approve or disapprove the idea within ten business days of the official request. BEP Music never responded, however, to Ubisoft, despite numerous requests for approval.

Ubisoft claims that it already used up 233 grand on the iOS game, and when you add in the loss of profits, it adds up to a million dollars in damages. Well, if the lawsuit doesn’t work out, the company can always fall back on Assassin’s Creed III, Imagine Babyz, and Petz Countryside for easy profits.

Hearts of Iron 3: Their Finest Hour Contest

Posted on October 17, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

Monty, Broken Joysticks’ official wargaming bulldog, has just secured some copies of the latest HOI 3 expansion, Their Finest Hour, to giveaway to our readers. I understand that his meticulous planning allowed him to succeed in an amphibious landing near Stockholm where, after a visit to the Vasa, he liberated some Steam codes from Paradox Interactive.

We have 7 steam codes for Their Finest Hour and 5 steam codes for The Hearts of Iron 3 Collection (which includes the base game and expansions needed to play the game). Monty also scored two copies of Crusader Kings 2. This sounds like a good excuse for a contest.

One of the new features in their Finest Hour (or at least new to HOI3) is the ability for your commanders to gain traits through combat. In order to enter our contest tell us (in the comments) what trait you deserve and why. For instance you could claim the right to be a Ranger because you are really into Lord of the Rings cosplay. The winners will be announced on Monday. You may see a full list of the leader traits after the jump.Read More

TES V: Skyrim DLC Leaked? Possible Dragon Mounts?

Posted on October 16, 2012 by Joshua Rust

If any truth is behind the information hidden away in the PC version of the most recent patch for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, it appears that the next DLC could be called “Dragonborn” and feature ride-able dragons.

OXM reports:

“Quest markers for Solstheim, Telvanni, Castle Karstaag, Raven Rock and Miraak Temple have been discovered, alongside entries for what appear to be four new armour varieties – Bonemold, Chitin, Nordic and Stalhrim. Finally, there are files for the aforesaid dragon-riding animations. Looks like you’ll be casting spells from dragon-back, too. “

This could be all too real. I’m sure with the leak, that Bethesda will announce something concrete soon. If the patch files aren’t enough proof of this, Zenimax (parent company of Bethesda) trademarked the name “Dragonborn” earlier this year.

What say you about some dragon-riding-spell-casting action?

Report: Nintendo Wii U Pro Controller will Last 80 Hours?

Posted on October 16, 2012 by Jason Bassett

As we all know, Nintendo will be launching the Wii U in just a few short weeks and with that comes a couple of cool controllers like the Wii U Gamepad. Nintendo will also be releasing another conventional controller with the system as well. Dubbed the Wii U Pro Controller, the control itself looks like a different version of the Xbox 360 controller. Apparently, both Amazon and Gamestop is reporting some new details about the controller’s battery life:

In a report by Destructoid, retailers such as Gamestop and Amazon have been touting that the Wii U Pro Controller will last ~80 hours. A production description on Gamestop reads:

Your games, your way. However you think of your gaming style – hardcore, old school, or purely nostalgic – the Wii U Pro Controller puts you in the game. Designed for accessibility and extended gameplay comfort, the Wii U Pro Controller features the dual analog sticks and ergonomic button layout that you’ve come to expect, as well as a rechargeable battery that can last up to 80 hours on a single charge. The Wii U Pro Controller can be used for playing a variety of games – from packaged games at retail to downloadable games from the Nintendo eShop. Look on the back of Wii U game packaging to see which games use the Wii U Pro Controller. Not compatible with the Wii system or games.

This seems unparalleled to be sure. There also have been some rumbles (pun intended) that there will be no rumble feature supported into the controller. Which would give the controller a more unsubstantial boost in power. This would be a vast improvement over the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 controllers that do not get the power and will be vastly superior compared to the 3-5 hours that the Wii U Gamepad will provide.

Dead Island: Riptide Collector’s Edition?

Posted on October 16, 2012 by Jesse Lord

In a fit of genius, our friends at Deep Silver have created a survey to find out what you, their loyal fans, want most in a potential Dead Island: Riptide Collector’s Edition!  Keep in mind that right now this is just a fact-finding mission for them, and it in no way guarantees that 1) you’ll get the items you want the most from the survey and 2) there will even be a collector’s edition released!

If you want to have your opinion known, go ahead and make with the clicking right about…… HERE.

I’m personally quite excited about Dead Island: Riptide and can’t wait to get back into the shoes of my favorite zombie slaying protagonists!

Mutant Mudds Free DLC Update Hits 3DS This Week

Posted on October 15, 2012 by Jeff Wade

Renegade Kid’s pixel platformer Mutant Mudds gained a lot of attention when it hit the 3DS eShop last year, and picked up some more when the PC version released with bonus content a few months back. But early adopters of the 3DS version will be excited to know the additional content from the PC release will hit Nintendo’s portable this week as a free update.

The new levels put you in control of main character Max’s helpful grandmother, as she battles with the titular Mudds with waterpack and gun in hand. Granny’s levels will utilize all three of the game’s updates, resulting in levels even more devious and challenging than the ones in the main game.Read More

Street Fighter X Tekken Version 2013 Update

Posted on October 14, 2012 by Broken Joysticks

Announced during New York Comi-Con, Ono announced that Street Fighter X Tekken is receiving a balanced update like Super Street Fighter 4 AE before it, in the form of Street Fighter x Tekken Version 2013. Just like the SSF4 AE 2012 update, Street Figher X Tekken Version 2013 will be a free upgrade as well. Other than character balancing, the system is getting a few tweaks to improve the overall gameplay as the game has earned the ire from many players and it’s a reason many tournaments are slowly dropping the game from its schedule. For character balances, so far only fourteen character changes were announced but with a roster of 50 characters (55 on PS3) expect some announcements for the rest of the roster. Read More

A DmC Demo Is Coming, And Mundus Is Back

Posted on October 14, 2012 by Seung Lee

Great news for the few people that are actually excited for Ninja Theory’s DmC. Earlier at New York Comic Con, Capcom announced that the game will have a demo on the PS3 and Xbox 360, sometime before its actual release date. There was no word on a PC demo, though.

In addition, Mundus has been confirmed to be returning in DmC. If you’ve ever played the first Devil May Cry, you’ll remember that Mundus was the Demon King and big bad, which Dante had to defeat. It’s probably safe to say that Mundus will also be the main villain in DmC, or at least a major one. Lastly, people who care about story might be excited to know that the game will take a more in-depth look at Dante and Vergil’s parents: Sparda and Eva.

DmC is set to release on January 15, 2013 for the PS3 and Xbox 360. The PC version’s release date is still up in the air.
