EverQuest Next Officially Cancelled, “Just Wasn’t Fun”

Posted on March 12, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Everquest Next

What do you do when a game just isn’t fun? Stop playing it? Well what happens when a game in development just isn’t fun? Daybreak Games have cancelled the long in development next generation MMORPG Everquest Next citing the fact that the game just wasn’t enjoyable as one of the factors the has lead to the project’s demise.

In development for many years EQ Next was rebooted as late as 2012 with a focus on the game being free to play. In 2013 Daybreak Games, then known as Sony Online Entertainment, received a full reveal at PAX East 2013. EQ Next would have been comprised of two different components – the EQ Next Client which would have provided the traditional MMO experience and Landmark which would allow player created worlds and assets to be imported into EQ Next’s MMO client.

Landmark had made it into closed beta before the project was scrapped earlier this week. Potential players were allowed to gain access to Landmark and at a later date EQ Next by purchasing a $99.99 USD founders pack.

We’ve got an excerpt from Russel Shanks’ statement about the cancellation of the project below. No word yet if players who paid in for the Founder’s Pack will receive a partial refund.

For those familiar with the internals of game development, you know that cancellations are a reality we must face from time to time. Inherent to the creative process are dreaming big, pushing hard and being brutally honest with where you land. In the case of EverQuest Next, we accomplished incredible feats that astonished industry insiders. Unfortunately, as we put together the pieces, we found that it wasn’t fun. We know you have high standards when it comes to Norrath and we do too. In final review, we had to face the fact that EverQuest Nextwould not meet the expectations we – and all of you – have for the worlds of Norrath.

Cities Skylines ‘Urban Planning’ Documentary To Screen At SXSW

Posted on March 10, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Paradox Interactive has partnered with film production company Luckyday to bring fans a documentary focused on their city simulation title Citites: Skylines and the intersection between gameplay and urban planning. Titled My Urban Playground the feature length documentary will make its debut during The Sweedish Affiar program block at South by Southwest. If you’re going to be there it will be screened Sunday, March 13, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. Central Time at the Waller Creek boat house, 74 Trinity, Austin, Texas.

Here’s what Paradox Interactive COO Susan Meza Graham had to say about the game’s enthusiastic player-base that includes members of many real world occupations that work in urban planning:

“It shouldn’t come as a surprise that among our millions of players, we have plenty of architects, urban planners, public officials, and many more people who have found parallels between the game and their professional lives. Working with Luckyday to capture this new project here in our hometown has been a wonderful experience and we’re eager to share the process and results with the world.”

Here is the official trailer for the feature length film, here’s hoping Paradox will release it sometime after SXSW for all to enjoy.

New Pokemon Title Announced For Mobile Phones

Posted on March 10, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

The Pokemon Company and mobile developer HEROZ Inc (developer of smartphone Chess titles) have joined forces to announce a brand new title for smartphones in Japan.  No official title, press-release or gameplay synopsis has been released thus far. As far as we can tell the brief teaser video, which is entirely in Japanese, appears to be teasing a new virtual strategy board game for mobile phones. Honestly, the whole thing elicited a reaction of “what the hell did I just watch?” from BrokenJoysticks staff upon stumbling on the below video.

The title of the video roughly translates (according to Microsoft Translate):

“In the spring of 2016 [official] Pokemon Star”

and the description of the video reads:

“Pokemon and HEROZ INC. from the creators of the Pokemon in the latest installment of the Pokemon game for smartphones!”

Do you think Nintendo will bring out a physical line of figures to go along with this game? Is there a chance that this title will come stateside? Perhaps we will find out more in the coming days.

In terms of franchises, this year’s session line-up from Square focuses on games that have already been released like the two mentioned above or titles that are on the horizon like the upcoming Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. The Division Has The Potential To Get Quite Repetitive

Posted on March 9, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

The Division

Yesterday saw the launch of one of the most anticipated new gaming IPs in some time, Tom Clancy’s The Division. Like many other eager players I set aside time in my schedule to try out the full version of the game after putting several hours into the two betas that Ubisoft held earlier in the year and I was psyched to see what the full version had to offer. I woke up yesterday morning at 4 AM and after a few false starts I’ve logged just over 4 hours in the game as of the writing of this post.Read More

Rumor: PlayStation VR Will Cost $1100+ CDN, Stealth Launch Next Week?

Posted on March 8, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Could the PlayStation VR, formally known as Project Morpheus, make its’ way to retail as early as next week? According a report filed by the Uk’s Daily Mail Sony has sent out invites to an exclusive event centered around the technology for next Tuesday.  This event which is clearly aimed at the tech enthusiast press just so happens to coincide with the 2016 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

Citing a retail listing that briefly appeared on Amazon.ca, the Daily Mail estimates that the add-on will be priced at approximately $1125 CDN (or $800 USD). Where things kind of really jump off the rails, so to speak, is their assertion that device will have a stealth launch right after the press event next week.  Not since the disastrous launch of the SEGA Saturn in 1995 has a major gaming company attempted to pull the now famous “and one more thing”, launching a product at the end of a press presentation. While it might work for Apple (repeatedly), would it be the right move for Sony’s fledgling VR technology?

Sony’s major competition in the VR space, the Oculus Rift, launches later this month on the 28th for a suggested retail price of $600 USD. HTC and Valve’s first VR kit, the HTC Vive, will ship a week later on April 5th, and is already available for pre-order at a staggering $799 USD price point. Do you think Sony will beat them all to the punch, even if they launch the PSVR in select markets?

Whatever happens, BrokenJoysticks will be sure to bring it to you. While we have yet to receive an invite for this specific PlayStation event we will have staff on the ground at GDC 2016. VR is sure to be the talk of the show and with just a few short days until the doors open who knows what surprises GDC has in store for us!

The Division’s Graffiti Enters The Real World For A Limited Time

Posted on March 8, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

The Division

Monorex, the team who designed all of the in-game graffiti that is on display throughout the streets of an infected New York City, have brought some of their designs into the real world for a limited time. The Shoreditch Art Wall in London England will play host to real world versions of several art assets from the game for the next five days to celebrate the launch of Tom Clancy’s The Division on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC.

To help further connect this art display with the game the crew at Monorex will be adding a layer of bank notes onto the Shoreditch Art Wall to draw parallels to the fictional plague spread through $1 USD banknotes  that wreaks havoc on Black Friday in The Division’s campaign.  Passersby who pluck banknotes from the Art Wall will have the chance to win copies of Tom Clancy’s The Division or even Xbox One consoles.

Regarding the artwork Project Lead on the Shoreditch Art Wall promotion, Holly Cooper, had this to say:

“First and foremost, we wanted this to be a piece of art. New York is such a familiar place; it’s this huge, shining example of a city at the height of civilisation.  That’s what makes the setting of the game in a mid-crisis Manhattan so compelling and believable”

Alongside the announcement of the Shoreditch Art Wall promotion in London Ubisoft’s YouTube Channel also posted a brief video so that all of us can see the excellent artwork on display.

Leak: Overwatch Releases 5/24, Early Access Starts May 3rd

Posted on March 7, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

According to a series of full page and mobile advertisements that accidentally went live on IGN.com over the past few hours, Blizzard’s upcoming team based First Person Shooter Overwatch will release on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on May 24th 2016. Not only will the game come out in just a little over two months but Blizzard will reportedly host an open beta stress test with customers who pre-ordered the game gaining early access starting on May 3rd.

Overwatch Leak

Our staff got the chance to play during one of Blizzard’s rare Closed Beta Test Weekends and honestly I absolutely fell in love with the game. Since  the beta took a brief hiatus throughout most of December and a bit of January the Overwatch development team have added a number of skins, decals and other goodies through progression based unlocks.

Weren’t lucky enough to get into the beta? Mark May 24th on your calendar, Soldier!

Black Ops III Sub Reddit Moderation Team Quits After Death Threats

Posted on March 6, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

It appears that the moderation team that oversee the popular Call of Duty: Blacks Ops III sub reddit r/BlackOps3 have taken a hiatus from moderation duties after backlash from the community that calumniated in one particular mod receiving death threats.

The whole situation can be quite confusing, specifically because the front-page of the sub reddit appears to be filled with spam threads, threads complaining about the lack of moderation and just general immaturity.

But from what I can gather from reading this stickied thread and several threads about “the purge” (a name given to the lack of moderation by the community, referencing the 2013 film of the same name) all of this began after the r/BlackOps3 moderation team suggested a merge with another popular Call of Duty sub reddit, r/CallofDuty.

Black Ops 3_MP_Battle at Ruhanga_WM

r/BlackOps3 sub reddit mod Gurr3nX received death threats and summed up his unfortunate and probably very scary situation thusly:

“I just had like the shittiest work week ever, 7 days and 67 hours. I also put up with some of the most toxic, vile, piece of shit people as best as I could. So “Your time is up, my time is now” everyone.

I didnt ask for the purge, but god damn I cant say I dont enjoy it after the shit some of you guys pull.”

Some posters on r/BlackOps3 have side-stepped the absolutely toxic behavior of their peers and instead expressed their opinion on the proposed merger and its’ potential impact on the existing community:

“I wanna clarify, I’m pretty neutral on this whole merge thing, I just think the mods should listen to what their community wants. I reckon if they had made the proposal of just trying it, and if the community thinks it doesn’t work, they revert it (correct me if a mod did say this), this shitstorm would have been avoided in the first place.”

As someone who has managed several communities – both large and small – I can say with certainty that community organization / moderation is often a thankless job. Deepest sympathies to Gurr3nX and here’s hoping that the immature antics of the r/BlackOps3 community don’t cause him any personal distress or harm. I know it shouldn’t be surprising that a game as well renowned as Call of Duty for screaming 14 year old would foster a community that issues death threats to their peers but online harassment is very real and unacceptable.

I’ll be keeping tabs on the r/BlackOps3 situation and will update this story with any major developments.

Nintendo Announces Paper Mario Color Splash

Posted on March 5, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Nintendo announced a brand new entry in the Paper Mario franchise exclusively for the Wii-U.  Titled Paper Mario Color Splash this game finds Paper Mario finds himself in a world that is beginning to lose it’s color (literally). In order to save this new land, Paper Mario must use a special hammer to splash down color on objects and NPCs.

The Paper Mario series began all the way back on the Nintendo 64 with the release of the original Paper Mario. Splash is the first console release for the franchise since 2007’s Super Paper Mario on the original Wii.  Our flat 2D friend had a co-staring role in this year’s Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam which was released in North America this past January on the 3DS.

Star Fox Zero Will Ship An Additional Game, Star Fox: Guard

Posted on March 4, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Star Fox Zero

Nintendo kicked off their huge 42 minute Nintendo Direct the same way that they kicked off last year’s E3 – with new information about the upcoming aerial space combat game Star Fox: Zero. Perhaps the juiciest piece of information revealed is that Star Fox Zero’s physical release will come bundled with two  games, the previously announced Star Fox Zero and a new title Star Fox: Guard.

Star Fox: Guard is a tower defense game set in the Star Fox universe. In this new title players must assist Slippy Toad and his uncle defeat waves of oncoming enemies by placing down canons and other defenses.  Over 100 pre-designed missions will be available on the Guard disc as well as an online mode that will allow players to upload custom made enemy placements on a number of pre-defined maps.

The physical release will bundle both games together in a dual disk package. Digitally Star Fox Zero and Star Fox: Guard will be sold separately with the price of the two games combined to equal the physical retail release. This is great news for folks who might want to just pick up Zero and skip Guard for the time being.

Both games will be out in North America on April 22nd.

Nintendo Has Cancelled The Pokemon Go GDC Presentation

Posted on March 3, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Pokemon trainers looking to get their first real details about Pokemon GO outside of promotional trailers will be disappointed to learn that Nintendo has cancelled the GDC presentation for the game. The official event page on the GDC tittle has simply been updated to include“CANCELLED” in the title.

In a statement issued to GameSpot about the abrupt event cancellation Niantec CEO John Hanke explained that they chose to cancel the highly anticipated event to focus on the Pokemon GO beta.

“We have decided to forego our GDC talk on Pokemon Go in order to focus on getting the product ready for beta test and launch. As much as we hate to disappoint those in the industry attending GDC, we feel our time and energy right now are best spent on making sure every aspect of the product is where we want it to be,”

Pokemon Go is expected to release later this year for Android and iOS devices.
