Root Double -Before Crime * After Days-. Review! VN GO!

Posted on May 2, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

A  VN Review by: Szko

Trapped in an underground facility with no exit, in a race against time as radiation levels threaten to kill you, and far too many people to save. This is the premise of Root Double -Before Crime * After Days-.

Root Double is a Visual Novel created by Regista and Yeti and released in Japan back in 2012. Thanks to Sekai Project the Xtend Edition of the game received a worldwide re-release in 2016. For those that don’t know a Visual Novel or VN is basically a book with pictures. Text appears on the screen and you either click the mouse or hit the enter button until it goes away. If you actually want to enjoy the game you’re going to have to read it though as that is where the content resides. The bulk of the gameplay for a visual novel consists of hitting the enter button. However, a lot of visual novels have a system where there are multiple routes or possible stories and story endings. It is like a choose your own adventure book you occasionally are given a choice to make which affects the outcome of the story if you get a bad end or a good end.

Darkest dungeon is getting a Linux port in its latest update

Posted on April 27, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Darkest Dungeon is a site favorite and one of the few games I actually keep on my PC at all times. Since its official release in January the game has essentially been constantly updated and this update, planned for mid may, will bring brings both Linux support and a new way for missions to end. Missions will now end in the hamlet which will have its own events that will only trigger at the end of certain missions. an example of this is provided in the post: “For example, the ALL SAINTS DAY event has a high chance to proc after successfully completing the Ruins Gather Holy Relics Quest,” a studio spokesperson explains in a recent update.

Darkest Dungeon Town

They go on to explain how one such even will work: “ALL SAINTS DAY sends the Abbey into a zealous celebration, and makes all treatments there free for that week! We like this example as it helps answer a common community concern on the value of the various gather/destroy quests that we’ve had in the game for a long time, and have been criticized for their loss in value due to inventory restrictions.”

The other part of this announcement is the Linux port. Linux gamers often get no love, so its always nice to see a developer giving the penguin side of operating systems some love. The port is available now, also mentioned is that Red Hook is hard at work on a set of , “better tools, docs and Steam Workshop integration”. interesting, so perhaps in the next few months we will see steam workshop integration which will open up modding for custom character classes, and levels. I would very much like to be able to play with some more characters, or diffrent status effects. Only time will tell!

What do you think of Darkest Dungeon? Why not tell us on Facebook or Twitter

Epistory – Typing Chronicles gets a trailer.

Posted on April 6, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Its been a very long time since I learned to type on Mario Teaches typing in the early 1990s. Since then typing games have come and gone, now one company is trying to revive the genre. Epistory – Typing Chronicles is a love story to a type of game thats mostly been ignored for the last 20 years. We have had a few games that use typing, off the top of my head I can think of typing of the dead and Disney’s Mickey typing adventure, but its a pretty uncommon genre.

mario-teaches-typing_5

Remember this? I do.

So it was with interest that I saw this new trailer come across the wires this morning. Mixing typing and an adventure game, with the attraction of riding on the back of a fox I had to check it out. The story turns out to be pretty bizarre.  You’re fighting insects in an origami world, in Epistory, something you achieve by typing words using your actual keyboard. its proabably best if you just watch the trailer honestly

Its also intresting to note, that the game supports: QWERTY, QWERTZ, AZERTY, BEPO, Dvorak, Workman and Colemak, keyboard layouts, perhaps catering to a crowd that might not normally be interested in such a basic game, but rather wants to learn how to use one of the these more obscure keyboard layouts. The game is available on steam  for 14$ now.

I went back to playing Diablo 3 and you should too

Posted on January 29, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

So I’ll admit it, I gave up on Blizzards latest Diablo game just over 4 months after it came out, I had hit the level cap, and wasn’t able to grind for the gear I needed in order to advance to higher difficulties. At the time the difficulties and drop rates were tuned in an attempt to force players to use the Auction House to get the proper gear for their level, or grind for endless hours. Level 60+ content was poorly organized there was no adventure mode, and I simply could not get past act with my monk. Since literally rage quitting during Act 2 (the freaking bees that shoot little bees) I haven’t opened the game at all. I’d say it’s probably been a year or more. Since then both the real money, and gold auction houses have bene removed (march 2014) and there has been a full expansion with a new character type (Reaper of Souls, and Crusader). The game has been patched quite a few times and holy crap this feels like a whole new game!

The Trailer features a good look at both the Enemies and the terminators.

The board game has also seen two turn based PC game releases in the last 10 years, the last of which (also called space hulk) was quite good if you are a fan of Turn Based RPG games.

This game looks to be much more action based, following on the heels of the successful release of Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide this game is also a squad based tactical FPS which will feature a series of weapons, and an RPG like unlock system for player abilities. Focus home interactive have a good handle on the War Hammer licenses, having published both very good Blood Bowl games.

Marc Laidlaw has left Valve

Posted on January 11, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

In an email posted to imgur Marc Laidlaw lists off all of the reasons that he left super publisher Valve. Citing a large number of reasons “but mostly im just old” the email also says “I am no longer a full or part time Valve employee, no longer involved in day to day decisions or operations, no longer a spokesman for the company, no longer privy to most types of confidential information, no longer working on Valve games in any capacity.”

Halflife3

So what does this mean for the long delayed never materializing Half Life 3? Readers will remember that Laidlaw wrote both Half Life and Half Life 2 solo. With out his influence is Half Life 3 destined to never exist at all? Does anyone really care?  I mean its been so long at this point that FPS games have shifted completely away from story having story at all (see Star Wars Battlefront, and the last Call of Duty for examples). Does the gaming public really want another story driven FPS set in the world of Half Life or should we let it die?

Psychonauts 2 reaches funding goal

Posted on January 7, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Well it was bound to happen, Psychonauts 2 has successfully raised the over 3 million dollars it requested from its fans on new fundraising site Fig.com

fig

[youtube id=i7i2yfqp8pc]

Fig is interesting in that its more of a micro investment site than a true crowd funder, yes still in this case the campaign is split almost 50/50 between conventional “reward” backers, at $1.613 million, and investors, at $1.698 million. It seems many of the donators either did not understand how fig works, or simply love Psychonauts 2 so much they just wanted to give it their money with no real want of anything but the game in return. Personally im just excited to see another game with the the Psychonauts title on it.

Is Fire Fall finally at its end? Red5 and their game are in trouble we try to find out why

Posted on December 30, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

The headline that greeted me was “Firefall studio Red 5 couldn’t make payroll on Christmas Day” I suddenly felt nostalgic. Red5 I said? Firefall? The game with thumpers and chosen and the melding had been a home to me and a few of my closest friends for a period of an about a year between its mid and late stage Beta testing. An MMO fps, with an open world, Fire fall promised a lot and delivered on very little. So I thought to myself what killed Red5? And their brainchild and babby Fire Fall? Was it the lack of content? No we played the game when there was no crafting (and or it was completely unusable), no missions, and very repetitive un-ranked PvP. During my almost year of time playing the un-ranked, non-progressive, repetitive PvE content I often wondered what kept me coming back. I had no more unlocks to unlock, there were no more guns in game to loot (At the time loot drops were basically non-existent), and I had thumped so many times I had started to wonder if there was a pattern to how the enemies spawned that I could exploit. But, I kept coming back, day after day after day. Why? Because the game was an adventure and during the period from late 2011 to mid-2012 my self and my guildies found out own fun in the world of Red5s Fire Fall, and in the end Red5 removed that fun, and it was the removal of that fun, unbounded game that marked the beginning of their end.
