CliffyB Compares Overwatch To Digital “Rock, Paper, Scissors”

Posted on June 23, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Team-based, hero focused first person shooters are all the rage right now and the undisputed king is Blizzard’s Overwatch. In an interview, CliffyB compared Blizzard’s latest success to a digital game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Our comrades at Eurogamer had a chance to sit down with CliffyB at E3 last week about his new game, Lawbreakers.

Comparisons to Overwatch wasn’t the only thing that CliffyB discussed, he was asked about the chance that the game might have cross-play between a potential console version and the already playable PC game. He shot the idea down saying:

“We like money and we like to keep the lights on .. we’ve talked to them [Microsoft & Sony] .. The thing about controllers is that it is going to be tricky. If we get around to doing a console port we don’t want to do cross-play. If you do keyboard & mouse VS controller the person on keyboard & mouse is going to win 9 times out of ten.”

Another tidbit that Cliffy dropped was the fact the developers at BossKey Studios are considering removing Iron Sights from the game:

“The other thing that we are looking at is ‘will we keep Iron Sights in the game?’. It is debatable right now, when you give players Iron Sights they play it like Destiny or Call of Duty.”

Towards the end of the interview Overwatch was brought up. The interview asked Cliff if the constant comparisons were tiring, as they seem to come up quite a bit. Here is what CliffyB said:

“People, when they see something, they want to put it in a bucket with something else. There is some overlap that we have characters, guns & what not. Our art style is very gritty, [Blizzard’s] art style is super bright colors, very cartoony – almost animeish… them as a game is so much Rock, Paper, Scissors. If I have the wrong character, I’m dead!”

How do you feel about this comparison between Overwatch and Lawbreakers? No cross-play between a potential console version and the PC build does not really surprise me given the fact that Lawbreakers feels like it was built with a keyboard & mouse in mind. For my initial impressions check out my write-up from E3 2016 where I played the game against developers from BossKey Studios. The next playable alpha for Lawbreakers is expected in July and potential players can sign up for the next alpha test on the official Lawbreakers website.

Microsoft Xbox presser first impressions from a first timer

Posted on June 13, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Woah, So I just finished up with the Xbox Presser, and although i didnt have as great a set of seats as Rae did (check the twitter and the post before this for pics) I was in section 105 and so I got to a pretty good seat.

My view was pretty great

My view was pretty great

I found myself seated next to some friends we had shared a Lyft over with, and we got to talk a bit pre show. Everyone was looking forward to seeing more Gears 4, more action from the guys at DICE with Battle Field one, and what was up with Re:core, as well as the dozen or so indie titles out there. Personally I was floored to see the Battlefield trailer even it was just cinematic, as well the awesome line up of indie titles that Microsoft has been working on. Take a look at all those indie games that MS had to spotlight. IMG_4974

Overall my first press conference was a HUGE adrenaline rush, the lights, the sound, the people, the games, we got to see so much and I am just so honored that I get to share all of this with you. Please keep it tuned right here for more coverage from E3!

Xbox One Slim leaks before E3

Posted on June 12, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Xbox One

Xbox seems to have been scooped. Despite there being a tight wrap on their supposed hardware announcements tomorrow at their press conference, at least one photo of a new Xbox Slim has leaked. The post first appeared on Neogaff but has since been verified by separate sources.

xboxslim

that’s about it, you get a 40% slimmer box, with a larger hard drive, the ability to push 4K video with HDR sound and a stand to make it vertical. Also announced with this apparent leak is the smaller slim controller, which is described as Sleeker, slimmer, sharper.

This box is not to be confused with the newer more powerful model of Xbox which is code-named “scorpio” and will presumably be announced tomorrow at the Microsoft E3 press conference.

Valley Releases first Trailer

Posted on June 9, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

developer Blue Isle Studios have released the first trailer for their upcomming game Valley The new trailer, which we have embedded above this article, showcases several minutes of gameplay footage, and features a mix of combat, freerunning and environments from the game. It sure does look pretty, but with only previous micro-horror title Slender under their belts you have to wonder if such an expansive game is too much for Bue Isle to take on.

Set for release this summer for PC, PlayStation®4 and Xbox One, Valley will introduce players to an mysterious and magical world, filled with secrets and danger. Through the powers of the L.E.A.F. Suit, a special exoskeleton that grants users incredible speed and agility, players will leap to great heights, explore secretive spaces, battle dangerous foes and even bring back the dead.

Spencer says “Xbox One Will Have a ‘Nice’ E3 2016”

Posted on April 10, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

I think most of us remember the Xbox one being called “undepowered and suck” by several game magazines around the world. Things have come a long way since then. I can now play my Xbox One from my PC, Microsoft has announced that I will be able to cross save files from my Windows 10 apps to my Xbox, and that I can probably only buy most games once and play them on both my Xbox and my PC. While its a bit unlikely that Xbox will ever make it to PS4 levels of console sales there is no doubt that Microsoft (and Phil Spencer) has done a good job of trying to do right by gamers with Xboxes current direction.

XboxInfinityTitleb

In a recent interview with the Venture beat Spencer said

“In the near term, our focus is on the Xbox console. We’re going to have a nice E3. The next focus is how we come to desktop. I’ll call it that. A lot of our franchises map better to desktop. A lot of our players play on both console and desktop. So let’s go after that and see what issues we run into, like control or voice communication or cross-buy, things we’re trying to enable. Let’s solve one big issue first and then look at the next wave of touch in mobile as a place we can go,”

The gist of what Spencer seems to be saying is that the Xbox console’s reach is set to extend far beyond the Xbox it self and off in the world of Windows 10. We have seen some of this with the much maligned recent release of Quantum Break, which was Microsoft’s first heavily advertised cross platform unified architecture game, and now it probably time for us to listen to a long presentation where we hear about the “console divide” and how Gears 4 will be cross platform.

What do you think will happen at this years E3 conference with Xbox? Tell us on Facebook or Twitter or in the comments below!

Kenny’s Fallout 4 Log – Almost Two Months

Posted on January 6, 2016 by Kenny Keelan

vaaultboyheader

It’s about five or six days short of two months owning the game and I’ve still been playing it, off and on, to pass the time when I’m bored with other games. There’s always downtime with Final Fantasy XIV, too, as my server has some pretty well defined times when it’s better off you just log off if you don’t want to solo quest. I’ve found that in playing it for as long as I have, I’ve pretty much done all that I can do, short of starting again or waiting until Bethesda patches the multitude of issues the game has, so I really have to prioritize what I do with my first playthrough character if I don’t want to play the waiting game with Bethesda: I’ve turned my attention to the fact that I really am only 11 trophies away from getting my very first platinum trophy and that will be my next goal for this game before I can dedicate to a new playthrough when Bethesda decides to really fix this game.

You have to understand, though, that wanting to go platinum for a game is kind of an unusual thing for me: I play for the fun of it and trophies, to me, are just a way to show off. I’m not interested in showing off my accomplishments in that way and if I want to show you how good I am, what I have in-game, or how far I’ve gotten, I’d rather just stream and show everyone, first-hand. Getting a platinum trophy, to me, in this game, would be like getting all the items in the game, bringing them to life, and showing them on a shelf – it’s not a point of arrogance but rather a kind of collector’s pride; a measure of how much I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the game. I love playing Fallout 4 but there’s been some serious thorns in my side and they’ll continue to be so long as I’m playing with this one character.Read More

A Tribute to Joe Waters – Video Game Industry Veteran

Posted on December 24, 2015 by Renee Gittins

joe

Joe Waters passed away on the morning of December 23rd. He was a dear friend of mine and of countless others. As someone who was blessed with knowing him well, both within the game industry and as a friend, I would like to share some words about him.

Joe was a self-declared “asshole”. He was blunt and straightforward. You always knew what he was thinking and what he thought of you. Yet his bluntness and tendency to flip off cameras could not hide that he was an extremely caring, kind and passionate person. I joked to him that he was one of the nicest jerks that I ever had the pleasure of knowing. Even his harshest reprimands were intended to help, much like a parent scolding a child for playing with fire.

His intellect was only matched by his compassion for others. Joe took many under his wing, from people at the countless game companies he worked for to someone standing alone at the bar. He was quick to include you and make you feel truly welcomed. His friendship never felt forced, his conversations never consisted of idle small talk. He was interested in your and your stories and helping you become the best person you could be. Wherever he went, he always brought cheer and positive energy. And, despite his almost intimidating appearance, he was quick to drop a goofy face, a joking comment and a big smile.

Joe himself had clawed his way to where he was in the game industry. He decided he wanted to make video games and forced his way into the industry by making his own video game from scratch, some 17 years ago, an extremely rare accomplishment for those times. He made every lick of it himself, from the art to graphics rendering. He would often recalled with a chuckle how, in his first interview, they asked him what parts of the game he had worked on and he responded “I don’t understand the question” because he made them all himself.

In those years since, he has become a core member of the game industry. His intelligent, programming talent and understanding of graphics rendering gave him immense value, but he was always treated everyone else as peers, no matter their background or profession. In these recent years, he has lead Seattle monthly industry nights that helped connect countless developers, from AAA to indie, from programmers to artists. He had a wonderful talent for helping people connect and has brought countless people together. Like his own friendship, the connections he helped established were deeper and more open than they ever would have been without him.

I, among many others, have the honor of considering him both a mentor and a friend. He always had time to grant advice, give a hug or just share a drink. He valued his friends more than anything in the world and it was apparent in everything he did. The blow of his loss is tribute to how well he lived his life.

We will all take our time to mourn his passing, but he was adamant that, upon his death, he wanted his friends to celebrate his life. So let us celebrate this wonderful man, whether you knew him personally or simply had the pleasure of knowing his work. He has accomplished far more in his life than many could ever imagine and has left a lasting impression upon the world. He was happy, he was loved and he will be missed.

Here’s to Joe.

Microsoft Says Xbox One Cloud Tech Available to Any Game, Including PS4 Exclusives

Posted on December 21, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

Phil Spencer

In a move that most people would call confusing, Phil Spencer said yesterday that Microsoft will not prevent anyone from using its Azure platform for cloud computing for gaming. DualShockers is reporting  that a fan asked on twitter about Titanfall 2 and how they would “hate to see the franchise lose out on Azure Cloud computing and servers.” Spencer replied: “Azure services are available to any game, even other platform’s exclusives. We wouldn’t keep someone from using.”

oh, ok then, so basically what Phil is saying is Azure for all? This is pretty huge. He went on to tweet . “I know people want me to comment on specific 3rd party games, I just can’t. Sorry,” So we don’t  know what or when but I think its safe to assume that we are going to be getting some multi-platform games that utilize the Azure cloud computing features, at the very least.

Personally I hope this means that we get a lot of games with destructible worlds like Crackdown which runs part of its multiplayer on the Azure cloud to allow for enhanced destruction.

Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition Review

Posted on November 2, 2015 by Kenny Keelan

This review was written using a digital copy of the game for PlayStation 4.

There was a long time where I was an avid Dungeons and Dragons player – up until around the time Edition 3.5 came about – and there was a string of video games and novels that I followed as a result: the Forgotten Realms. These were games and novels that tied directly into the lore and the world that Dungeons and Dragons were apparently supposed to take place in.  Black Isle Studios created some of the best Forgotten Realms games ever, starting with titles like Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale. When I was first pointed towards Divinity, it looked like it had the same feel and, honestly, as a result, I had a little apprehension: while those games are incredibly deep and full of life, they also brought back memories of frustration and how much time was drained into those games. However, most of that time was spent completely immersed in the worlds presented by the games and that made the choice pretty easy… it was time to give Divinity a shot and, well, here we are…

Xbox One’s Forza 6 Gets Custom Concept Controller

Posted on November 1, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

It would seem that after a long drought console gamers will again be able to get custom licensed first party peripherals on the Xbox One. First we saw the two Halo controllers and then the Fall Out 4 edition, and now  a Forza theme modeled after the colors and pedals of the Ford GT.  The elite controller is only a few weeks old, but already we are getting a concept for a nice licensed first party themed edition. The custom controller is blue and black, and has features that evoke Fords new 2016 GT, one of Forza’s signature cars. The controller sports (see what i did there?) the same liquid blue color as the car (see images in the gallery) and also has triggers designed to look like gas and break pedals.

Ford apparently collaborated on the controllers design, their press release here said “”On the subtle side this concept features carbon fiber in parts of the case to add strength and lightness, Also the Ford GT steering wheel provided direction on the shape and ergonomic positioning of the invaluable left thumbstick as well as paddles for shifting that mimic the design of the Ford GT’s.” it went on to say  “The battery housing has a clear design to represent the rear glass above the engine of the Ford GT, Last, but definitely not least the trigger buttons which act as your gas and brake pedals have been modified with the look of the GTs pedals. This is a design exercise that went to extraordinary lengths to be as true to the all-new Ford GT as possible and it does not disappoint.”

unfortunately it seems you wont be able to buy this controller, as its just a concept, but it shows at least that Microsoft is open to the idea of licensed first party controllers, on their new elite controller platform. The $150 Xbox One Elite was released in October.

Community Created Battlefield 4 Map Deployed

Posted on October 28, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

I’m sure of one thing – that the Battlefield community certainly is passionate about one of their favorite games, Battlefield 4. Developers at DICE LA have been working with the community for the past six months on a brand new map called Operation Outbreak which has now been released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Windows PC for free!

How did the developers work with the community? By collecting feedback through various community forums, official polls, social media and other outlets to help shape every aspect of this map. Through what EA calls the Community Test Environment players were able to preview the map while in development.

The end result is the final infantry focused jungle map which EA has made the focus of a brand new trailer released through YouTube.

EA’s Star Wars Battlefront Beta Surpassed 9 Million Users

Posted on October 13, 2015 by Kenny Keelan

Whether they jumped on for a short time and hated it or loved it and stuck it through the entire beta phase, the game’s senior producer, Sigurlina Ingvarsdottir, revealed the the beta is officially the largest open beta in Electronic Arts history by accruing over nine million active users through the course of its tenure.

Considering that a lot of Star Wars franchise fans have been salivating for a Battlefront game for a very, very long time, now, this isn’t entirely surprising. What is surprising, however, is the mixed responses it’s gotten from those who have played. While there are reports that this game is one of the most anticipated of the last quarter of the year, after playing the beta, there seems to be some hesitation among some of the people I know that are playing the game, hoping, at the very least, that it will improve.

Star Wars: Battlefront is coming on November 17th of this year, putting it in direct competition with another titan of a franchise being release around the same time: Fallout 4, which is coming out a week earlier. The season pass, which will set you back fifty dollars, will give you access to all planned expansion content.

Star Wars Battlefront Season Pass Priced at $50

Posted on October 13, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

Just when we thought we had all the Star Wars news we could handle EA has released the price for their season pass. The price will be 50$ The four map packs that have been announced so far. The Collection of maps is quite expensive but if you calculate the total cost of each DLC to be 15$ you actually get a bit of a discount. EA is sweetening the pot with another added incentive. Players who buy the DLC season pass to Star Wars Battlefront will get two week early access to the maps before the release and an exclusive emote. The emote will say “shoot first” in a reference to the iconic original Cut of Star Wars Episode 4 where Han Solo shot Greedo first.

Star_Wars_Battlefront_2015_box

50$ seems like a lot but its become fairly standard for most season passes that contain this number of map packs. EA is also giving a nod to its player base by giving out the maps early to loyal customers who pre-purchase the season pass. The season pass will also be available to anyone who buys the Star Wars Battlefront Ultimate Edition which clocks in at whopping 140$. Both are currently available on the Origin store for pre-order.
