Blizzard releases another animated short “dragons”

Posted on May 17, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Blizzard is back with another animated short to flesh out their world of Overwatch. This one features Genji and Hanzo with a bit of their backstory and just enough combat to keep it interesting. Take a look also at the attention paid to detail on the map, each bit of damage shows up on the in game Hanamura map and its that attention to detail and the quality of animation that really make this short the best we have yet seen.

Overwatch’s beta gets a cinematic Trailer

Posted on May 3, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Overwatch may not have a dedicated story mode, but Blizzard is doing a good job telling its story through little vignettes and other lore material. Now with the open beta just one day away the masses have been given one more cinematic teaser, this time with a distinct recruitment feeling

It features the same character that was present in the last short Winston, who further explains the back story of the omnic crisis and the world of Overwatch, then implores you to return and “do something” to make a difference. The short then closes with “are you with me” and some pretty awesome cinematic footage of Overwatch itself. If you haven’t already decided to play the game, I encourage you to at lest get in to the beta for a short time, and give it a try.

I can honetly say that through both of the stress test weekends (I was not in the general beta) I had so much fun that my opinion of the game changed and I purchased it. So I emplore you to at least give the game a try and see if it feels like something you might enjoy. Join me in the beta, and lets go frag some newbs.

The Many Boothes, Game Stations & Custom Stuff From PAX East

Posted on April 25, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

The Penny Arcade Expo floor is absolutely massive and it’d almost be impossible for one person to see every game, exhibit and custom piece of kit being shown off. Over the course of the last three days I’ve checked out everything from hardware manufacturers, to Square Enix’s latest offerings to the Indie Mega Booth in search of some of the coolest stuff to be found on the show floor.

Fionna shot an excellent 7 minute floor walkthrough video that gives you a small taste of the PAX East experience.

Overwatch Abominations – A New Glitch has Disturbing Results

Posted on April 18, 2016 by Renee Gittins

One of the joys of playing games still in development is the discovery of bugs and other glitches that have amusing results. Sometimes these even make it out of the betas and into the released games themselves, like the flying horse of Skyrim. This latest glitch is one that I hope to see continue to live on.

During the Overwatch stress test this last weekend, one of the members of my guild discovered a glitch in Overwatch that allowed you to force a texture on another character’s model. Some of the results are quite humorous while others border terrifying.

My personal favorite is Soldier 76 gracefully poised in Tracer’s new “Over the Shoulder” pose.

s76

Isn’t he so spunky?

Of course, it’s the horrifying Mei-Winston combination that has won over hearts. Just check out that tongue!

Brand New Overwatch Short ‘Alive’ Debuts

Posted on April 3, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Overwatch Alive Short

Blizzard’s marketing blitz for their upcoming team shooter Overwatch with the release of a brand new 6 minute self contained animated short. This time things focus on the French assassin Widowmaker, as she moves in for the kill on a VIP in Kings Row. It’s really cool to see Blizzard using the in-game levels as the setting for their animated shorts. Does Widowmaker get the kill? You’ll have to keep watching until the end to find out!

This short’s narration opens with the chilling “When I was little I had a fear of spiders…”, just how do the arachnids factor into Widowmaker’s character development?

Overwatch’s last animated short, , was an Xbox exclusive so it was only fitting that “Alive” debuted on PlayStation’s official YouTube channel.

Overwatch will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC on May 29th and has an open beta earlier in May.

Tracer’s Butt and Why I’m Okay with the “Over the Shoulder” Pose

Posted on March 29, 2016 by Renee Gittins

A recent post on the Overwatch forums has sparked a controversy over how one of Overwatch‘s star characters, Tracer, is represented in the game. The thread started as a complain from a player who claimed that Tracer’s “Over the Shoulder” pose was too sexualized for the character and is in opposition to Tracer’s spunky personality. They claim this sexualization of Tracer reduces her depth as a strong female character to “another bland female sex symbol”.

As many of our readers know, I am very outspoken for proper representation and consideration for women in games. I completely agree that sexualization of Tracer’s character would be bad for her character and for Overwatch overall.

Here’s where I disagree with the complaint: I don’t think that it’s a sexual pose.

Overwatch weekly brawls dug up by data miners

Posted on March 28, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

If you are not in the Overwatch beta (like me) then you probably missed the most recent set of patch notes which added a new mode similar to Hearthstone’s tavern brawl. Now data miners have found a cache of data which seems to name all of the brawls that will be playable. Lets get right to it here is what Overpwn found

  • Super Shimada Bros.: Welcome to Hanamura. Genji and Hanzo only. Faster abilities, slower ultimates.
  • Mystery Heroes: On death you will respawn as a randomly selected hero.
  • Justice Rains From Above: Pharah and Mercy take to the skies.
  • Arcade: More health! Faster ability and ultimate cooldowns! Faster respawn!
  • We’re All Soldiers Now: Soldier: 76 takes command of the Control Maps.
  • High Noon: It’s high noon on Route 66. Headshots with McCree only.
  • Show Your Support: All support heroes. Limited to two of the same per team.
  • Tanks a Lot: All tank heroes. Limited to two of the same per team.
  • Overly Defensive: All defense heroes. Limited to two of the same per team.
  • Highly Offensive: All offense heroes. Limited to two of the same per team.
  • Heads Up!: McCree, Genji, Hanzo, and Widowmaker. Headshots only.
  • The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: McCree, Reaper, and Roadhog duke it out.
  • Moba-Watch: Unique heroes per team. No hero switching allowed.
  • Girl Power: Female heroes only. Sorry, boys.

There you go, personally I kinda love the idea of a rotating game mode that keeps things interesting beyond just team death match, payload, and king of the hill. I personally can wait to play Overwatch period so playing any of these game modes seems even more fun.

What do you think of this mode? Tell us on Facebook or Twitter.

The short animated film is set in Winston’s lab and delves into his past, showing where he got his start as a young ape. It also brings a bit more clarity to why the heroes of Overwatch are active again.

This is the first of four expected Overwatch shorts.

Overwatch is coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One May 24th.

Leak: Overwatch Releases 5/24, Early Access Starts May 3rd

Posted on March 7, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

According to a series of full page and mobile advertisements that accidentally went live on IGN.com over the past few hours, Blizzard’s upcoming team based First Person Shooter Overwatch will release on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on May 24th 2016. Not only will the game come out in just a little over two months but Blizzard will reportedly host an open beta stress test with customers who pre-ordered the game gaining early access starting on May 3rd.

Overwatch Leak

Our staff got the chance to play during one of Blizzard’s rare Closed Beta Test Weekends and honestly I absolutely fell in love with the game. Since  the beta took a brief hiatus throughout most of December and a bit of January the Overwatch development team have added a number of skins, decals and other goodies through progression based unlocks.

Weren’t lucky enough to get into the beta? Mark May 24th on your calendar, Soldier!

A New Beta Wave For Overwatch For Players In Asia

Posted on February 17, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

If you’ve been avidly awaiting an invite to the closed Overwatch beta on PC and are based in Asia then prepare to spam your F5 keys rapidly.  Blizzard took to twitter yesterday to let potential players know that they have flagged accounts for the first beta wave since Overwatch’s December hiatus for accounts based in the Asia region.

Some players have asked if Australia was considered part of the Asia region. According to the official @PlayOverwatch twitter account our Aussie friends are actually considered part of the Americas region.

You can check your beta status by logging into the battle.net account management page. If you see something like the below image then you’re in!

New Details emerge from Overwatch Beta

Posted on February 9, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Some new details have emerged about the Overwatch Beta that will be back up later today.

Overview:

-For the new progression system, you have an infinite global level-up system that works like Paragon Levels in Diablo 3. Playing any hero puts experience into the same level-up bar.
-As you level up, you unlock things like portrait borders and character portraits, and you also get loot crates.
-Each loot crate has at least four cosmetic items in it. These include skins, emotes, new voice-over lines, sprays, and more.
-You can crunch duplicate loot items for credits which you can use to buy more loot crates.
-All loot crate items are purely cosmetic.
-Eventually you’ll be able to buy loot crates for real money, but at launch that system most likely won’t be ready.
-The new mode is a King of the Hill type game mode, but modified to fit Overwatch better. It’s a best of three system where there is only one control point at a time, and whoever gets to two first wins.
-There are two new maps for this mode.
-You can also have custom games where you can change all sorts of settings either for competitive-minded events (think character limits) or just to make the game more unusual (think an All Genji mode).
-There is also now a Versus AI mode.
-There are a bunch of other beta improvements like the spectator camera and balancing and etc.
-They’re working on things like ranked play, but they might not be in for launch.
-As is probably obvious, it’s a service game and will be updated continually based on fan feedback and their own objectives.

‘Twas the Night Before Overwatch

Posted on February 8, 2016 by Renee Gittins

overwatch

‘Twas the night before Overwatch, when all ‘cross the globe,
Every gamer was waiting, donned in their soft robes,
Their headphones were hung by their PCs with care,
In hopes that Overwatch soon would be there.

The gamers were nestled all snug in each chair,
While visions of Tracer blinked ’round without care.
The beta was returning, just ‘few hours away
To bring joy and fast battles back to their day.

Overwatch Beta Returns To Active Duty On Feb 9th

Posted on February 3, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Blizzard’s upcoming objective based team shooter Overwatch will return to closed beta on February 9th according to a post on the developer’s official blog. The Overwatch beta began late last October and continued until right before Christmas, the devs took the game offline for an extended period to put the finishing touches on new maps, make a number of balance changes and the highly anticipated new persistent progression system.

Here are some of the new features/fixes according to Blizzard:

  • An all-new progression system
  • Two new maps, including a new game mode
  • Several hero balance updates
  • And a variety of Private Game updates, including full A.I. matches

Players who already had access to the closed beta will gain access to this second phase of testing. It is not known if previous Stress Test Weekend members will get a shot at beta phase 2 but Blizzard did stress that they will be looking into adding more players as testing continues.

We don’t have any details on what this new game mode or two new maps will be, I guess we will all find out together in just six days time.

Overwatch won’t return until February

Posted on January 22, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

If you caught the Overwatch bug and have been hoping to get your overwatch fix on in the new year, you’ll have to wait a little longer. The world heaved a collective sigh when Overwatch  took a break in December, but Blizzard promised us it wouldn’t be forever. Now, game director Jeff Kaplan has put that any speculation to rest, writing in a new blog post that it won’t return until next month.

Widowmaker_Overwatch_005

BUT! Do not despair there is a good reason. In the blog post Kaplan says “While progress has been great and the team has been working super hard to get everything implemented on time, we’re not quite ready to bring the Closed Beta back online just yet, We’ve been pretty open about the fact that we could slip into February from the beginning, but a big reason for this delay is that we really wanted to add one more big feature to the next beta patch.”

Rejoice! A new game mode! (at least that’s what we think that big new feature is) Having another game mode along side payload and capture will bring some much needed change to the line up on the game, and while its not as good as a new hero, its still pretty good.

When asked about the delay Kaplan said “By [delaying the beta], we can make sure we can include the new game mode along with the new maps. This will also allow us to do some additional polish to the game’s progression and reward system. Though all these features will still technically be a work-in-progress during the beta, we’d like them to be at a certain quality bar before releasing them for testing.”

Players will be able to return in Feburary for the second part of the beta and the game proper will go on sale in June of 2016.
