Twitch Prime Giving Away Golden Loot Boxes For Overwatch

Posted on June 20, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Twitch & Amazon are bringing yet another AAA freebie with the announcement of special Golden Loot Boxes for Blizzard’s Overwatch. Every few weeks Twitch releases a brand new free loot for Twitch / Amazon subscribers, usually items and boosters for free to play titles.

Existing Twitch Prime members can snag a one-time use code for Battle.net which will add a single golden Loot box to their Overwatch game. golden boxes are guaranteed to contain at least one legendary, and this is the first time that these particular boxes have been offered.  This isn’t the end of the Blizzard X Twitch promotion either – Prime members will receive a code for 5 free standard loot boxes sometime in August and another 5 standard boxes this coming October (just in time for Junkenstien perhaps?)

The announcement page for this promotion also teases more free loot for Heroes of the Storm and Hearthstone coming in the future.

Want to see what opening a golden loot box looks like? We’ve got you covered:

Overwatch’s Next Map Sends Players To The Moon

Posted on June 2, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Overwatch’s next new map for both competitive and quick play will take Blizzard’s heroes to the moon with the upcoming addition of the Horizon Lunar Colony. This new map, lore wise, gives us a sense of where the game’s giant ape Winston grew up and the circumstances surrounding his past and an ape uprising on the moon.

Gameplay wise Horizon Lunar Colony will feature a single low gravity section near point A. There is a set of airlock doors that players can move through to experience combat with less gravity – how long do you think Junkrat would let his grenades float around? Like Hanamura, Temple of Anubis and Volyskaya Industries, Horizon requires the attacking team to capture 2 different capture points to achieve victories while defenders must keep attackers at bay until time expires.

Fans of Overwatch lore can be found via new tidbits on computer monitors, the names of scientists and other contextual objects in the map. If you watched the first animated short released when the game was announced in 2014 you might recognize some of the rooms on the Colony.

Modified gravity won’t just be exclusive to the Horizon Lunar Colony map – a special arcade brawl with low gravity will be available during launch week. Also as an added treat gravity sliders will also be added for hosts of custom games.

With the Overwatch anniversary event ending on the 12th it feels like the OW dev team are hard at work on new content to keep us coming back.

Jeff Kaplan Aware of Overwatch Community’s Concerns About Anniversary Loot Boxes

Posted on May 26, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Overwatch’s 1st-year-anniversary event is well underway with the first week of the three-week celebration almost complete. Now, game director Jeff Kaplan has acknowledged that the development team is aware of players complaints surrounding the drop rate of the coveted event only skins.

Unlike previous events where the limited time skins came in a variety of rarities ranging from the rare blow to the high-quality blue drops to the epic quality orange legendries. The anniversary skins not only don’t encompass the entire 24 hero line-up but because they’re only available as legendaries a number of loot boxes needed to open to obtain all of them has increased significantly compared to other events.

Over on the Overwatch Reddit user, Desks_Up crunched some numbers and calculated the total cost of all time limited items across the six seasonal Overwatch events. It’s important to keep in mind that these calculations assume that you want to buy every item. If you’re only after one or two skins then it is completely possible to grind out 6,000 credits within three weeks using just the level-up reward boxes and arcade boxes.

Quoting Desks_Up:

In total, buying all purchasable items from the Anniversary event requires 56,475 credits for 108 items:

11 Legendary skins: 33,000 (~58.4% of total cost)

24 dance emotes: 18,000 (~31.9% of total cost)

48 voice lines: 3,600 (~6.4% of total cost)

25 sprays: 1,875 (~3.3% of total cost)

This is much more expensive compared to the total cost of the previous events:

Uprising: 36,825 credits for 95 items

Year of the Rooster: 37,050 credits for 99 items

Winter Wonderland: 33,075 credits for 94 items

Halloween Terror: 31,500 credits for 94 items

Summer Games: 0 credits for 0 items (32,250 for 72 items if they were buyable)

Because this event is more expensive than all the other events, if you want most or all of the cosmetics, DO NOT BUY USING CREDITS UNTIL THE LAST WEEK (unless you have at least 56k credits). As much as you might want those items, you’ll have to suppress your desires to get the most from this event.

All of this brings me back to Jeff’s comments on the official forums surrounding the feedback of players like Desks_Up. He acknowledges that the developers have been reading player feedback and discussions surrounding the drop rate of items and the rarity of the skins on offer during seasonal events.  Jeff offers no immediate actions that Blizzard might take to help remedy the disparity in terms of grinding needed to earn a wanted item, it is probably more realistic that all of this feedback will find its way into the updated 2nd year events starting with Summer Games this August.

Here is Jeff Kaplans post as it appeared on NeoGaf:

How do you feel about the drop rate of legendary Overwatch items? Have you received the skins that you’ve wanted from the Anniversary Event despite all of them being legendary? Let us know in the comments section.

Overwatch’s Anniversary Event Is Upon Us

Posted on May 23, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

The teased Overwatch anniversary event has descended onto Blizzard’s servers as promised. This update brings a whole selection of new skins (although sadly not every hero receives one), brand new emotes for all heroes including some hilarious dance emotes and a whole pile of common items that will remain in loot boxes after the anniversary event concludes. Also added were three brand new “arena maps” that will provide some much-needed variety to the elimination modes.

Here is a small sampling of some of my favorite new skins:

The following heroes received new time limited skins for the anniversary event:

  • Pharah
  • Soldier 76
  • VA
  • Tracer
  • Mei
  • Hanzo
  • Zarya
  • Bastion
  • Genji
  • Symmetra
  • Lucio

Dance emotes have also been added for all 24 heroes and you can preview them all without logging into the game, just head over to the official Play Overwatch site to preview them.

If you’d rather hear about the update from the game’s director Jeff Kaplan, Blizzard released a nearly ten-minute developer update alongside the patch this morning. I can’t believe it has been a year since Overwatch was originally released. It was one of my most played titles last year and since I received the Mei Bee Keeper skin from my free loot box I’m free to grind boxes until I get that sweet Kaman Rider skin for Genji.

Overwatch Anniversary will become a seasonal event and the new dance emotes & three new elimination maps will remain available after the event ends on June 12th.

Last Week of Nexus Challenge 2.0 Rewards 10 Overwatch & HOTS Lootboxes

Posted on May 17, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Fans of Heroes of the Storm and Overwatch on PC can snag 10 loot boxes for each game if they’re willing to play 5 HOTS 2.0 friends between now and May 22nd. Complete some matches with your pals and cross your fingers that last hero in your collection or epic skin drops from of these gratis loot piñatas.

Nexus Challenge 2.0 is part of a larger marketing push for Blizzard Entertainment’s MOBA which saw a major reworking of its cash shop, hero purchasing, item unlocking and the inclusion of Overwatch style Loot Chests. For a more in-depth look at the major changes that came with the HOTS 2.0 rollout including new heroes, Genji & D.VA read our previous coverage.

All four weeks worth of Nexus Challenge 2.0 quests will be available until May 21st and must be completed in order to earn that week’s rewards. Console players of Overwatch are also able to link their console Overwatch account to their Battle.net launcher in order to earn the week four loot boxes on their platform of choice.

Here is a brief rundown of the Nexus 2.0 unlocks:

Week 1

  • Orochi Hovercycle HOTS Mount
  • Oni Genji Banner
  • Oni Genji Spray
  • Oni Genji Portrait
  • Oni Genji Skin / Spray and Icon in Overwatch

Week 2

  • Busan Police Hovercycle mount in HOTS
  • Police D.VA Skin in Overwatch

Week 3

  • Overwatch HOTS Hexagon mount
  • Officer D.VA Banner, Spray and Player icon in HOTS 2.0
  • Officer D.VA Spray and Icon in Overwatch

Week 4

  • 10 Loot Chests in HOTS 2.0 (one Rare)
  • 10 Loot Boxes in Overwatch

In my previous coverage of the recent Quake Champions Beta I’ve touched upon some of the huge pitfalls with in-game random loot boxes and how they prey upon the same psychological techniques & exploits as slot machines and other forms of gambling. Other authors have done far more exhaustive research into the topic such as IGN’s Nathan Lawrence who spoke to experts in behavioral psychology at the Video Game Addiction Treatment Centre about the implications and mechanics of in-game RNG loot boxes. This is a topic I’m planning on covering in a series of future articles on our site but Lawrence’s article is an in-depth and fascinating look at how exactly these boxes trick our brains into hoping for that rare drop when the numbers tell us there is less than a 1 in 100 chance we could see it.

Speaking about how receiving that 1% or less rare drop just once reinforces the impulse to purchase more drops in the hopes of duplicating previous success Emil Hodzic from the Videogames Addiction Treatment Centre told Lawerence that:

“Then that dynamic of the gambling – the poker machine motivation system comes in – whereby, you get one really good skin or emote one time and it wants you to [get] more. Over time, the interest and the attachment and the drive for what you get from that loot drop can definitely increase, especially when they’ve got the seasons thing, like [a] Halloween [event].”

I hope everyone who completes the Nexus 2.0 challenge enjoys their spoils for the amount of time that they’ve put into the game. Opening Lootboxes can be a fun experience but remember that all of the numbers behind the flashy lights and sounds have been calculated so that you’ll part with just another dollar or two in hopes of getting that epic drop.

Overwatch: Uprising Reintroduces PVE And It’s Great

Posted on April 13, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Player Vs Environment content finally returns to the futuristic world of Overwatch with the latest event – Uprising – which released yesterday across all platforms. From now until May 1st players can take a trip to Kings Row in a 4 player co-operative narrative that showcases Tracers’ first operation with Overwatch. As with every other limited time event Overwatch: Uprising also brings with it 100 new unlockable items including some pretty cool skins.

What Is It Like To Play?

Overwatch: Uprising tells the story of Lena Oxton (Aka Tracer)’s first real operation with Overwatch. Players will guide Tracer, Reinhardt, Mercy and Torbjorn through a brand new variation of the Kings Row map across a number of different objectives. The team starts with the objective of “hacking” three different terminals to disable the AA guns that surround the city so that a payload can be delivered to its destination.

Uprising combines multiple gameplay modes that we’ve seen in Quick match and Competitive into one cohesive package. The team of four start by controlling the hack points king of the hill style before defending the delivered payload from every increasingly difficult waves of enemies as the payload powers up. Once the payload is ready to roll the action shifts to the familiar payload escort type that any Overwatch player should know like the back of their hand. The final push involves having to defeat 4 souped up omnics  – The OR-14s, the predecessor to the OR-14 also known as Orisa.

Your Role Can Make All of The Difference

Enemy encounters in uprising aren’t especially challenging or anything special compared to the raw amount of tension and unpredictability that can come with Player Vs Player action but Uprising has been balanced in such a way as to allow for unique playstyles and roles for the 4 team members despite all of them facing off against the same enemies. When compared to the mindless omnic robots from the Halloween event Junkenstien’s Revenge the enemies in Uprising will move around the map and defend themselves with energy shields. Another positive to the various Omnic baddies in Uprising is the fact that you can come across a number of different models – enemy bastions, OR-15s, shield carriers and small laser robots designed to destroy the payload.  If there is one major drawback to Uprisings encounter when compared to Junkenstien it is that the Omnic models repeat over and over and the Halloween event’s NPCS had some personality with rifts on existing heroes like The Reaper and The Witch, which is sorely missed.

Typically when playing the restricted Torbjorn, Mercy, Tracer, Rheinhardt variant of Uprising players will be cast into specific roles depending on the character they have chosen. After a few runs of Uprising – each of which last between 15 to 20 minutes – players will get used to how they are supposed to handle the different encounters that Uprising throws at them.

In my experience I find that:

Torb – Is best used placing his turret in the corner of the larger rooms early on during hack sequences. When escorting the payload may sure to keep your turret on the payload and healed. During the final stretch inside the power station a great place for your turret is above the elevated platforms once the enemy Bastions are dead.

Rein – Don’t rush ahead of the group as this takes away some much-needed protection in the form of the barrier. Hammer swings can feel satisfying, especially when taking out multiple enemies at once but don’t “go looking for a fight”, let the enemies come to you. When escorting the payload to the Power Station it is best to sit in front of the payload so that the shield can cover the turret.

Tracer –  Like rein “don’t go looking for a fight” her low health pool means that it is very easy to get stranded ahead of the team with no healer in sight. Tracer excels at destroying the energy shield carrying Omnics as her mobility allows her access to their weak spots located on their upper backs.

Mercy – Honestly no idea, I’m a terrible Mercy. I asked my wife who mains Mercy and she offered the advice that Mercy’s pistol is more valuable than than the damage boost. So when you can try to take down enemies to help out your team when they don’t require healing. Your teammates don’t need to be at 100% health, do some damage and then top up your teammates.

All About The Unlocks

No Overwatch special event would be complete without a whole bunch of new skins, sprays and collectables to unlock. In addition to the Reinhardt, Mercy, Torb and Tracer “origin” skins from this event, Blizzard has also added origin skins for Genji and McCree as well. Personally I find the origin skins for the main 4 from this event to be bland and boring – hint they all look the same. Genji and McCree for the win on this one!

Here is a sampling of all of the stuff you can unlock if you are lucky enough (or spend enough real world $ on loot boxes):

Bastion Uprising Skin:

Orisa Uprising Skin:

Genji Uprising Skin:

Widowmaker Uprising Skin:

McCree Blackwatch Skin:

Mercy Origins Skin:

Playing Overwatch’s New Hero, Orisa, Is Fully Loaded Fun

Posted on March 8, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Orisa

Blizzard surprised everyone by unleashing a brand new tank for Overwatch during GDC. While I did not get much time with OW’s second Omnic, Orisa, during the convention – now that things have calmed down somewhat, I feel that it is time to dive into the experience that I have had with this Gatling Gun carrying defender and how she differs from the available roster.

Orisa is a specially customized Omnic OR-15 unit modified by the child genius Efi Oladele to protect her city from the assault of Talon member, Doomfist. Unlike her contemporaries Orisa possesses an advanced artificial intelligence program, built by Efi, which gives her the ability to tell the differences between right and wrong. This sense of morality allows Orisa to organically learn from her experiences and discern what may be a threat to herself, her people and her creator.

As a tank Orisa might feel like a combination of Bastion, Reinhardt and Zarya at first glance but after several matches playing with or against her it is clear that she is not analogous to any one particular existing hero. Certainly there are pieces of her kit that do feel like modified versions of other heroic abilities but none of them are direct copies. For example: her frontal shield can block incoming fire defensively, like Reinhardt but the fact that it has half of the health of Reins and no mobility changes up how you would use. The same goes for her graviton surge like secondary fire which will pull enemies towards the blast. Unlike Zarya’s ultimate these small bursts of magnetic energy dissipate within a second or two and are really only large enough to affect one opponent at a time. To sum it all up – Orisa’s kit doesn’t feel like Blizzard is aping their own work but rather drawing inspiration from what works with other heroes and finding new ways to make these abilities work within the tank role.

Orisa

Facing off against enemy Orisa players it became quite apparent that some heroes have an advantage against her when compared to others. Matching up a Tracer vs Orisa will surely end in the Tracer being quickly murdered with the chaingun unless she can quickly plant her smart bomb on Orisa’s back (a strategy that can also apply to stationary Bastions). Orisa’s fortify ability also allows her to negate certain ultimates and stationary traps. A fortified Orisa can simply walk over a Junkrat trap, take damage but take no movement penalty. Likewise, if you are playing Reinhardt and try to use your ultimate on a fortified Orisa, there will be no effect on her. One thing I did find interesting is that Sombra’s hack ability does work on Orisa’s damage amplifier ultimate, effectively canceling it.

Overall I’ve had a lot of fun playing with Orisa and I can’t wait to see what she does to the games’ meta once she goes live. Some of the strategies I am used to using when playing Bastion, such as mounting on the top of the payload on Kings Road, work with Orisa with the added benefit of her frontal shield and fortify ability.  It should be noted that these impressions are based upon the current Public Test Realm version of Orisa and are subject to change before she goes live on the production servers in a couple of weeks. If you want to do some in-depth reading in regards to counter strategies for Orisa before she comes to the live version of the game I highly recommend you read this Mic article.

Overwatch Custom Game Browser Now Available On PTR

Posted on February 11, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Overwatch’s game director Jeff Kaplan took to YouTube this week to announce that custom games are getting an overhaul along with the launch of the first version of a custom server browser, allowing players to search custom games for the first time.

Custom game hosts can configure a number of options with this latest update. Here is just a small sample of the options available for players to play around with.

  • Enable / disable individual heroes
  • Change the rate of health regeneration from health packs and abilities
  • Disable abilities and ultimate’s entirely
  • Change movement speeds
  • Limit team sizes
  • Limit map rotation

This can lead to a lot of interesting custom game variations, some of which have already hit YouTube. Here are some of these inventive modes include “Juggernaut” – a single team of one super health / damage boosted Roadhog or “tower defense” offensive attack heroes against a team of six Torb / Symetra defenders on a payload map.

Check out some of these modes in these embedded videos:

Here is Jeff Kaplan’s original video message, which almost a million people have watched. The Custom Game Browser is now available on the PTR, and is expected to drop in the first post Lunar Festival update next week.

Overwatch Lunar Festival Trailer Shows Off New Skins & Capture The Flag Mode

Posted on January 24, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

A leaked trailer for the upcoming Overwatch Lunar Festival event showcases not only quite a few new skins for Tracer, Bastion, Mei, D.VA and others but also a brand new mode Capture The Flag. It looks like a version of the trailer was posted on YouTube a bit early – the event is scheduled to start later today sometime after 9 AM PST. Thanks to the leaked trailer we also know that the event will run until Tuesday Feb 14th and since we won’t be getting a Valentine’s Day event, perhaps the end of the Lunar Festival is designed to break some hearts?

Here is an embed of the leaked trailer (if it hasn’t been taken down):

Here are some interesting screen-grabs from the trailer:

Overwatch’s Festive Winter Event Comes With Free Loot Boxes

Posted on December 13, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Overwatch’s heroes are walking in a winter wonderland with the recently released festive update to the game for PS4, Xbox One and Windows PC. This limited time event not only offers holiday themed maps, a brand new seasonal event and a set of Winter Wonderland loot boxes that can provide those sweet skins we all crave, or the Overwatch equivalent of coal with a duplicate spray.

owxmas1

For the seasonal brawl Overwatch’s Mei is getting into the spirit by hosting Mei’s Snowball Offensive on Echopoint: Antartica.  This mode pits teams of 6 against each other using the single  elimination ruleset, Mei’s blaster has also been modified to allow only one shot at a time – so you won’t be spamming icicles of death. Players still have access to Mei’s ice wall, healing and ultimate as per usual. Like the other elimination modes Snowball Offensive is a best of 5 competition.

Players will find a free loot box wrapped under the title screen for their enjoyment upon first booting up the Overwatch update. Free boxes are also available in the Arcade for player’s Mei’s Snowball Offensive and Winter Mystery – a festive reskin of the Mystery Heroes brawls. As always free loot boxes can be earned by either getting 3 wins in the Arcade (capping out at free boxes per week) or by progressing through the level-up system for 20,000 experience points.

There are some wonderful things to be found in the latest loot boxes: Elf Tracer, Santa Tjorborne, Nutcracker Zenyatta and Icicle Pharah being my favorites so far.

Here is a small sampling of what you can find in this latest update:

Meet Overwatch’s Sombra In The ‘Infiltrator’ Short

Posted on November 4, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Overwatch’s stealthy hacker has been teased, hinted at and hidden in the shadows since her first mention several months ago. After a lengthy Alternate Reality game involving fictional corporations, hidden voice lines and out of game mysteries – Sombra is now in plain sight for all to see,

In true Blizzard style she interrupted a documentary outlining the global launch of Blizzard’s competitive online shooter. The brand new animated short showcases Sombra, Reaper and Widowmaker taking on an assignment to assassinate the head of a Russian weapon development corporation.

In terms of personality it seems that Sombra is a fun loving and not so serious hero. She ends her interaction with the head of the Russian weapons corporation by “booping” her nose. Sombra’s personality certainly matches her colourful aesthetic, it is a shame her design was leaked so early but this new short certainly makes up for it.

According the official Overwatch site here are all of her abilities:

Machine Pistol Sombra’s fully-automatic machine pistol fires in a short-range spread.

Hack – Sombra hacks enemies to temporarily stop them from using their abilities, or hacks first aid kits to make them useless to her opponents.

Theromoptic Camo – Sombra becomes invisible for a short period of time, during which her speed is boosted considerably. Attacking, using offensive abilities, or taking damage disables her camouflage.

Translocator Sombra tosses out a translocator beacon. She can instantly return to the beacon’s location while it is active (including when it’s in mid-flight).

EMP – Sombra discharges electromagnetic energy in a wide radius, destroying enemy barriers and shields and hacking all opponents caught in the blast.

Watch the new short below. Sombra is playable on the Blizzcon show-floor and will be on the Public Test Realm next week.

Overwatch Sombra Blizzcon Print Leaks As Halloween Event Ends

Posted on November 1, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Remember that huge Overwatch leak from a few weeks back that confirmed Junkenstien’s revenge before its’ reveal and supposedly contained in-game character art for the mysterious Sombra? The character’s design has pretty much been confirmed thanks to an early leak of a Sombra art print that will be available on the Blizzcon Gear Store during next week’s convention.

The art piece in question was drawn by artist John Polidora who has worked as a Senior Concept Artist / Character Designer for Blizzard Entertainment since 2014 but he has been with the company in other roles since 2008. His credits include work as a character designer for Overwatch and modeling on World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade and World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Litch King.

As for Sombra’s design – she’s shown wearing the same purple leatherish outfit complete with amazing sidecut and Uzis. She seems to be channeling some kind of energy into a large omnic like the ones seen in the background of the volskaya industries map, this has lead to players hypothesizing that she might control armies of the robots and her Uzi is simply for protection up close – not unlike Mercy’s blaster.

Here is the art that leaked:

With the Halloween event ending today at 4PM PST do you think Blizzard will reveal Sombra tonight or wait until this weekend’s Blizzcon?

Overwatch’s ‘Junkenstein Revenge’ Fills A Much Needed Gap

Posted on October 13, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Blizzard released the first major Overwatch update since August’s summer games and not only does Junkenstein’s Revenge bring some pretty epic Halloween collectables to the game but it also shows that the game could use more story-driven PVE content, something the initial release of the game completely lacked. After putting in two complete evenings into the mode and securing several of the new loot boxes, I’d like to share some of my thoughts on Blizzard’s take on the popular horde mode.

What Is Junkenstein’s Revenge

This Halloween themed brawl takes inspiration from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and classic horror movies in order to transport a team of four players to a modified version of the Eichenwald castle. Team selection is limited to only four characters – McCree, Soldier 76, Hanzo and Anna – and the team has a simple objective: defend the castle gate from waves of monstrosities and zombified omnics.

overwatch_halloween2

Each round of Junkenstein’s revenge only lasts about six to eight minutes but the adrenaline rush from defeating waves of helpless zombie omnics and the more powerful named foes is relentless and a lot more action focused than any other mode to be found within the game. While PVP games surely have their fare share of action packed skirmishes and close calls when it comes to defending points these are paced along with sprints to the objects after a respawn. The waves for this short Halloween brawl don’t really give the players much breathing room and this provides a fantastic arcade shooter experience against dozens of enemies that simply isn’t found within the base game.

Topping off this fantastic new experience is an excellent use of stylistic art choices, clever visual flair and a dynamic narration system that I didn’t know I needed in my life. Each Overwatch character featured in Junkenstein’s Revenge is cleverly remodeled / renamed after some sort of Halloween trope. Mercy is the absolutely jaw dropping Witch, Roadhog is Junkenstein’s Monster and of course Junkrat is the titular mad scientist… oh and all of these outfits are unlockable via the new Halloween loot boxes. Probably the coolest addition to this Brawl is the dynamic narration read by none other than Reinhardt. As the players destroy waves of enemies or slay the named monsters Reinhardt’s narration will change accordingly such as “the gunslingers bullet finally found its mark as he knocked down The Reaper”. Not only does it add some narrative context to an otherwise chaotic free for all but it gives the world of this brief experience a lot of character as well.

overwatch_halloween3

The Cool Loot

Like the Summer Games event there is a whole stash of in-game skins, sprays, voice-lines and portraits for players to unlock. Like the loot from the last event these are only available through limited time loot boxes but unlike August’s Olympic fair the legendary skins can be purchased with in-game coins. You won’t necessarily need to pull out your credit card to get that Witch Mercy skin but it will costs you more than a regular legendary – 3x in fact, the most expensive items are priced at 3,000 in-game credits. Price prohibitive? Absolutely but its better than simply locking the item behind the grind/paywall of RNG boxes.

Here are some of my favorite unlocks revealed thus far:

Huge Leak Reveals Overwatch Halloween Event & Sombra

Posted on October 8, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Multiple leaks may have confirmed a number of new additions coming very soon to the world of Overwatch including a new limited time event, a new set of loot boxes and our first look at the illusive Sombra. It is important to note that none of this has been confirmed by Blizzard and all of this information comes from multiple sources, so make sure you firmly plant all of this in the rumor column until it is officially confirmed.

Sombra

sombra

The leak involving our would be hacker / assassin comes from reddit user je_te_vois who posted an internal screenshot that not only gives us our first look at Sombra’s in-game design but also details about her background.

Sadly this portion of the leak is short on details about she might play in-game. Here’s a list of what we do know:

  • She is one of the most renown hackers in the world of Overwatch.
  • She suffered a great loss as a child “costing her everything”.
  • Sombra worked as a freelance hacker before going underground due to something (the image is cut off).
  • She was later recruited by the terrorist organization Talon (which explains one of Reaper’s voice lines).

In terms of her design she sports a small SMG machine gun, a purple and white leather coat with a large collar. Her aesthetic is completed with a glorious side-cut, here just take a look for yourself:

Upcoming Comic

junkenstein

A brand new tie-in comic revealing a bit more about the Overwatch universe may drop as early as this Tuesday and the cover art for the comic tells us a lot more than just little tidbits of backstory. Titled “Junkenstein” this comic appears to be one of the centerpieces of the game’s upcoming Halloween event. Inspired by classic monster movies (for its title) and other Halloween tropes we see new outfits for both Junkrat and Mercy.

Also rumored to be coming to Overwatch (via Neogaf) but with a lot less information to back it up is a PVE horde mode where players will battle against Omnic A.Is on a special version of the Echenwald castle – sadly we have no images or further details on this possible new mode but if it is true, this would add a much needed PVE focus to a game that has been soley PVP focused since its release.

636113849615588905cyufl

Lastly what would a brand new event be without more loot boxes? Given the comic cover it is safe to say that there will be new Halloween inspired legendaries available. These loot boxes appeared briefly on the Xbox Live Marketplace so there is a high chance that they are legit.

What do you think of all of this? Quite a bit to chew through but if legit then Overwatch is about to get one heck of an expansion come this Tueaday.

We will update this story if anything becomes official.
