COLECO Chameleon: a rebranding of RETRO VGS into a COLECO comeback

Posted on December 18, 2015 by Erika

Fans new and old of the ColecoVision will probably be surprised to hear that a new cartridge-based system in partnership with Retro Video Game Systems, Inc will be coming out in early 2016. Dubbed the COLECO Chameleon, the system will be capable of playing classic games, and is also noted for being able to play new releases in 8-bit, 16-bit-, and 32-bit styles, which are still quite popular formats with adult gamers today. In a day of age where games are played on discs or flash cards, having a new cartridge-based system will be quite interesting to see that isn’t

Fig Crowdfunding Service Opening Up To Smaller Investors

Posted on November 24, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

Fig
Fig, the crowdfunding platform that apparently already existed prior to me writing this news story, is changing it’s rules in regards to crowdfunding and “investors”. Fig’s signature feature is that if a minimum of 1000 dollars is given to a campaign, one will share in a portion of the profits proportional to the amount put in. These “investors” as Fig calls them were only allowed to participate if they had a yearly salary of at least 200.000 dollars, or a net worth of at least 1.000.000 dollars. This restriction has now been lifted for people wanting to invest anywhere between

Pre-Orders Open for Samsung’s $100 VR Headset

Posted on November 10, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

Samsung has just made their $100 VR Headset available for pre-order at Best Buy.  The device only works in combination with a variety of Samsung devices, the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge+, S6 and S6 Edge, and comes pre-loaded with a bunch of  3D movie trailers and “360° videos”. A lot of sites have been hailing this as the device that’d make VR go mainstream but I’m….skeptical. The largest problem with the device is the lack of content for it, and it will probably be years before there will be consistent content created for it. The main advantage of

Posted on November 5, 2015 by Renee Gittins

I recently wrote an article on my favorite virtual reality games. I think that ensuring people experience the best virtual reality games is extremely important to the health of the medium– a bad VR game is all it takes to make someone lose interest in VR and maybe lose their lunch, too. Unfortunately, it is not always easy to identify the component of a VR experience that sends you in a rush to the nearest trash bin. I wanted to share my knowledge of core issues for both gamers and developers to keep an eye out for when playing and working in

YouTube Red Blocking Certain Gaming Videos in the United States

Posted on October 26, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

Last week YouTube announced the premiere of YouTube Red. This service allows content creators to gate off some of their videos behind a subscription fee. It seems however that as with every major change YouTube seems to make, there have been some issues. Certain gaming companies have not yet agreed to the terms for YouTube Red and as a result of this footage of certain games is getting blocked for US viewers.

Hideo Kojima Has Left Konami and Kojima Productions

Posted on October 19, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

Hideo Kojima, whom has leant his name to Kojima productions, has left Koonami, and his self named studio. This will come as no surprise to most people, after he was asked to step away from his last project (Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain) due to time and budget concerns. A source whom spoke with the New Yorker said a ceremony took place at Kojima studios for his departure, about 100 people attended, and that there was a “rather cheerful but also emotional goodbye.” the source, who wished to remain unnamed, said that he did not see Konami’s president, Hideki Hayakawa, or
