Overwatch’s newest character is a Star Craft II Pro

Posted on October 31, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

The newest addition to the line up for Blizzards huge MOBA overwatch has been annoucned. Her name is D.VA (pronounced DIVA). She appeared briefly on Blizzards official over watch twitter with a link to the  StarCraft 2 WCS site. In game  Hana “D.Va” Song is, in game lore, a real StarCraft 2 pro. She’s the best in the world, in fact, but she’s taking a break from the game so she can serve her homeland.

“At the age of 16, D.Va became the #1 ranked player in the world and proceeded to go undefeated for the next three years in all competitions,” her official StarCraft 2 player biography states. “D.Va is an international star, beloved by her fans at home and abroad, and has toured in exhibitions around the world. Recently, she has taken a step back from competition to focus on her commitment to protect the safety of her homeland.”

Capture

Intrestingly she is not yet listed on the Blizzard official Overwatch site, so we have no idea what she can do. Personally id love to see her pilot a mech, as many forum posts and websites have guessed.  She is also described as “MEKA’s newest recruit” on Twitter, lending that theroy even more credence.

We will wait official word from Blizzard then update the story!

Rocket league to get mutators with free DLC

Posted on October 29, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

Our oppinions here at brokenjoysticks on Rocket League are well known, our review posted here was glowing to say the least. So any time we hear about DLC or new content for that game we get EXTREMELY excited. So what could make an already amazing game where you shoot around in cars that have rockets even more amazing? The answer lies in Mutators

[youtube id=”cEH2hUw-d_U”]

Mutators at first seem simple, you can change all sorts of things, the size of the ball, the gravity in the field, the shape of the ball (is it still a ball if its square? I DONT KNOW) etc. Some that we know about already include: Cube (turns ball in to a cube), Moonball (lowers gravity), and Time warp (presumably warps time?) The new modifiers will appear in custom games and in a rotating playlist called unsurprisingly Mutator Mashup. I personally cant wait to get my hands on these game modes, the basic mode of rocket league was always where I had the most fun, and this will add so much more. Plus its bound to make it easier right? no i guess probably not, but thats the fun isint it?

Also announced is a hockey mode for later on in December. The Mutator DLC is free and will be available in the coming weeks. An additional preview will be provided today via a live stream.

League of legends team Impulse is for sale

Posted on October 28, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

E-sports is big money, there can be no denying that at this point. So its no surprise that just like other pro sports team, League teams can be bought and sold. What is a surprise is one that is in the LCS (basically the major leagues of LoL) for sale at the time of the world championship.  The team in question is Impulse, whom are already qualified for the 2016 LCS, meaning the sale comes with their spot as well as players, and other assets.

Team Impulse COO Alex Gu said in an interview with  GameSpot that thoughts of a sale first came up in September, but the decision wasn’t made until last week. Impuse did not have a good season this year in the LCS with plagued with player difficulties they failed to qualify for the World Championships finishing fourth at the LCS Summer Playoffs and falling to Cloud9 in theRegional Qualifier. Though no asking price was cited, the teams sale must be concluded quickly so they can be prepared for the 2016 season.

“We want to shift the ownership from the team to a local investor ideally,” a Team Impulse rep said in an email sent to Kotaku confirming the sale. “We are currently performing due diligence and having some conversations. We hope to announce a successful strategic transaction soon.”

Hopefully this does not become a trend, as personally I have no desire to see League teams changing hands over one bad season.

Tales From the Bordelands is Surprisingly Engaging

Posted on October 28, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

Review by Hoodie Joy

“what do you expect out of an episodic story based game?”

I found myself asking this often. Tales from the Borderlands is my first of this genre, and I took the opportunity to review it because it seemed like a good way to try out episodic games. I loved both Borderlands 1 and 2, but this game is not either of those.

Tales from the Borderlands was a pleasant surprise. I went into the game expecting a comedic game with somewhat likeable characters, that were more funny, than interesting or lovable. This might sound like a very negative outlook on the game, but I never really found much to love about borderlands characters. They were funny and amusing, but never made me care.

Being a story focused game, I am hesitant to spoil anything off the bat with specific facts, but some things are important: There is a Canon lesbian couple, who are both badasses. They are not queerbaited. They are not made fun of. They are treated the same as all the other crew, and were extraordinarily human. The game makes you like some people I really did not expect to like. This is of course, relevant to my specific playthrough, but there are many characters who have done some terrible things, and your choices can lead to very likeable and friendly outcomes. At the end of the story I believe there were around 5 characters I originally expected nothing but comedic amusement from, who not only delivered on that, but also showed a genuinely interesting and complicated character.

Guitar Hero Live is a strong showing from a new studio

Posted on October 27, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

The first thing we need to get out of the way is that this is not a Harmonix game.  New developers Free Style Games have stepped up to the plate, and delivered the newest installment. So this is still guitar hero, but it’s not a Harmonix guitar hero. That being said, it’s still a great rhythm game, it  has plenty of new touches and only a few negative points that I might expect out of the first game of a new franchise.

Guitar hero basically invented the rhythm genre, so it should be no surprise that it can now re-invent it.  The biggest change to Guitar Hero Live is to the Guitar itself. It’s got six buttons now, three white and three black arranged in two rows. This is a radical change from the previous five brightly colored buttons. I found the new layout to be easier, requiring less movement of the hands, but more difficult to pick up than it previous incarnation. The games icons are arranged as such that you can see if you need to press the top or bottom row while strumming, but this means you now have to set left or right handed and makes the game less practical as a pass around party game.  It’s fairly clear on screen which button you need to press, but I still found myself missing a fair few notes as I moved from top row to bottom, as well as missing the combined notes where both top and bottom need to be held.  The buttons top and bottom rows have different textures which help distinguish them, and their natural feel means less looking at the fret board and more playing. Overall the guitar redesign is a HUGE win for this new Guitar Hero game, it pushes fresh life in to a series that got too bloated. One thing the controller does lack is a headphone jack, so there won’t be any silent rocking out at your house.

Destinys new Oryx Raid Gets a Hard Mode

Posted on October 23, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

Destiny’s raids have always been hard. The first one took an expert team of 4 players over a week to figure out and complete. So it comes as no suprise that even harder, longer, and tougher raids are a major attraction to the destiny community. Today the hardest yet becomes available at 10AM. This challenge is no joke, Destiny’s lead designer recommends that players taking on the raid have at least a light level of 300. Gavin Irby, lead designer said

“This time, we followed a subtractive approach by building the mechanics early on. For a long time, we play-tested internally in Hard Mode, treating it as the default experience. Once we were satisfied, we removed them to arrive at the Raid you have already played,” he said.

“For the mechanics themselves, we shied away from simply increasing sandbox difficulty (not that it won’t be harder). You’ve had time to hone your strategies and develop a rhythm,” Irby added. “Some of you might even be able to do it backwards, blindfolded, or upside-down. Hard Mode is going to upset that rhythm. We’re going to give you one more plate to spin, and make you think on your feet.”

Many Destiny players hope that this raid will bring another level of difficulty after its normal mode was toppled in just a few hours. The raid has will become officially conquered as soon as players exit to orbit, at which time players will get their rewards.

Destiny Patch 2.0.2 Detailed

Posted on October 23, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

Details have emerged on the next major Destiny update. On the weekly Bungie blog both the date, and content are detailed.  Design lead Lars Bakken tells tell players:

“Last week, it was clear to us that you were frustrated by the Iron Banner reward drops, and rightly so! It turns out that, when we started digging into the issue, we uncovered a nasty bug that affected how Legendary drops happen throughout the Crucible, including Iron Banner. We’re working hard to ensure that the next Iron Banner will work as intended, and be even better than before. These changes will make your entire Crucible career more rewarding. Once the final details are locked, we’ll be sure to share them with you. Thanks for all the feedback, and may the Lords of Iron reward your future bravery.”

bounties are also getting some love, the Forged quest just added in the Taken King expansion will be shortened, and players will be offered more choices on how they complete it. Finally, Players will also be able to turn in multiple quests at once, a long missed feature.

Bungie estimates that the patch will be ready “around Thanksgiving”

Rovio The Studio Behind Angry Birds is Cutting Over 200 Jobs

Posted on October 21, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

The boom bust cycle of game development is something that anyone who works in the industry can tell you horror stories about, large layoffs are often commonplace after development sprints and often studio sizes swell, and shrink by the hundreds prior too and after a games release. It is however surprising that after over half a decade of dominance the studio behind the Angry Birds is starting to show signs of flagging. The first blow came when in August of this year it was reported that the studio (based in France) was in a nasty fight with its employees over staff redundancy.  France’s labor laws are quite strict and laying off workers takes time, but now it seems that process has ended. The cuts come as part of a restructuring process that will see Rovio concentrate its efforts around three primary business areas: games, media, and consumer products. This comes as a surprise to some, as recent announcements of Angry Birds the Movie, and millions of downloads for Angry Birds 2 would seems to have invigorated the company.

Job cuts were spread across Rovio’s entire business, with the exception of the team working on the Angry Birds movie in the United States and Canada. For those affected, Rovio said it will “actively provide career support for those made redundant as a result of the reorganization.” Rovio has seen better days. and many industry analysts believe the company may no longer be relevant.

New Battlefield Hardline DLC is and its free.

Posted on October 21, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

EA has announced today that it will add a free expansion to its cops and robbers battlefield, called Blackout. The announcement comes on the EA blog which says “What happens when the lights go out, and criminal and police factions are forced to face off under the slimmest sliver of light? Find out yourself,” The post goes on to detail what will be in the expansion:

  • Two maps: Night Job and Night Woods (night versions of Bank Job and Backwoods)
  • 1 new gadget: Night Vision Goggles
  • 2 new weapons for all classes and factions: a new version of the RO933 and a new Battle Rifle
  • New music, camos, assignments, patches, and more

Blackout will also improve the games spectator mode (because E-sports). Its odd to see this expansion being released for free after the previous two, Criminal Activity and Robbery, were both paid DLC. Its even more odd when you factor in that there are two more announced but as yet un-released DLC’s called Getaway and Betrayal, that are coming in 2016. There is no word yet on the launch date of blackout.

PS4 To Recieve price Cut In Europe

Posted on October 21, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

It often seems that with consoles Europe gets left in the dust, so it usually comes as no surprise when months after a US price decrease the same thing is finally applied to Europe. Such is the case again with the PS4, the MSRP will not be €349.99/£299.99.  A spokesperson for Sony said “Since the launch of PS4 our aim has always been to provide players with the best gaming experiences at the best value, and we’ve been thrilled with the amount of players who have joined our world,” Most of those players joined at a price point close to double the standard US prices.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss Jim Ryan said:

“With this year’s biggest blockbusters and next year’s best exclusives such as Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End set to thrill players, there has never been a better time to join the PS4 community.”

Truly this can not come at a better time, as Sony continues the push of the current generation in to the holiday season.

Hideo Kojima Has Left Konami and Kojima Productions

Posted on October 19, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

Hideo Kojima, whom has leant his name to Kojima productions, has left Koonami, and his self named studio. This will come as no surprise to most people, after he was asked to step away from his last project (Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain) due to time and budget concerns. A source whom spoke with the New Yorker said a ceremony took place at Kojima studios for his departure, about 100 people attended, and that there was a “rather cheerful but also emotional goodbye.” the source, who wished to remain unnamed, said that he did not see Konami’s president, Hideki Hayakawa, or its C.E.O., Sadaaki Kaneyoshi, at the party, but some of Kojima’s colleagues from other studios showed up to pay their respects, as did many of the people who worked on his most recent directorial project, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.  The story also reports that Kojima has signed a non-compete which expires in December, after which perhaps we will see something new out of the legendary director.

metal-gear-solid-v-youtube-channel-art-980x551

Kojimas name has become synonymous with the cinematic story telling of the Metal Gear franchise which he created and has been at the head of development since its first installment. For those unfamiliar with Metal Gear, it spans several games, over a period of more than 50 in game years, and has an expansive world and cast whom appear in each game. The latest installment featured an open world map, player created bases, and hundreds of in game item variations. Kojima’s importance to both Konami and the gaming world can not be understated, his name stands with the likes of Miyamoto in the pantheon of great creators.

Unfortunately for those who follow this sort of thing, this move will come as no surprise. Kojima was asked to step away from the latest metal gear installment after production ran long and expensive. Konami wanted the game released, Kojima wanted the game to be feature complete, and it set the studio head and his company at odds.  I for one hope he goes out on his own, perhaps runs a crowd funding initive and builds what he wants to build rather than being confined to studios budgets and time schedule.
