18th Gate | Review

Posted on January 15, 2013 by Jason Nason

What’s the first thing you do when you buy any new game? You look at the instruction manual from cover to cover before even turning on the game?

Weird! Me too!

Okay, not really. The reality is that most of us don’t even crack the cover of the instructions unless we want to look at the pictures or if the game has a complicated and sometimes confusing controls *Ahem, sports games.*

Let’s face it. Most games are either really intuitive or guide you through the basic steps to playing the game without spoiling anything.

Most games. Not this one.

The 2012 Top Five

Posted on January 13, 2013 by Jason Fayta

Editor’s note: Staff at Broken Joysticks will be sharing their top five games, or game related stories, from 2012 throughout the week. We’re starting the feature with the top five from our contributing reviewer, Jason Fayta.

It’s hard to believe 2012 is over, and it’s equally hard to believe we’re already two weeks into 2013. Overall, I found 2012 to be a solid year for releases, but I can’t say there was a title I was completely enamored with, which lead to some difficulty in rounding out my top five releases from the year. However, as I went through my playing history, certain games began to stand out as titles I found most compelling, regardless of their flaws. So, without further ado, the top five…

Dead Space 3’s Terrifying $160 Dev Team Edition Detailed

Posted on January 13, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Looking for forward to EA’s Dead Space 3? Well, the publisher has unveiled the $160, Dev Team Edition, for the most hardcore necromorph hunters out there.  For an entry price like that you’ll get the game on your platform of choice (PS3, Xbox 360 or PC),  an 8 inch Black Marker statue, a Med Pack Water Bottle, 20 page note book filled with extra lore, an art book and post cards.

There was a time when Collector’s Editions of blockbuster videogames were a little daunting with almost every triple AAA title releasing an version that costs nearly double the price. Luckily things have slowed down a bit, save for the Halos, Dead Spaces and Call of Duties of the world.

Are you a fan of limited edition games? I’ve personally bought the Halo 3 limited edition (with Cat Helmet!) and the limited edition Gears of War 3 steel box, but little else. If the Dead Space 3 Dev Team Edition sounds up your alley get more information on EA’s website.

Half Life 2’s “Return To Ravenholm” Episode Resurfaces

Posted on January 12, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Did you know that Valve once worked with Dishonored developers Arkane on an expansion for Half Life 2 titled Return To Ravenholm? The project was cancelled over four years ago and was only acknowledged  by Valve staff last January, but we may have finally  got our first look at the cancelled project thanks to the folks at Valvetime. We haven’t had any solid details on the project, well ever, and even this brief glimpse comes with the caveat that there is no way to confirm if these screenshots are legit.Read More

Resident Evil: Revelations Outed By Achievement List

Posted on January 11, 2013 by Joshua Rust

It appears that the 3DS exclusive Resident Evil: Revelations may be coming to the Xbox 360 if a recent listing of achievements it accurate. While not officially announced, this all but confirms that it will be coming out soon. It’s just a matter if this will be a retail release or released via Games On Demand. Personally I think the latter option will probably be what happens seeing how both Resident Evil 4 & Resident Evil: Code Veronica received similar treatment last year.

Scoring in at a solid 82/100 over on Metacritic it’s clear to see that this game was well received by the critics and would we a welcoming addition to the Xbox 360. Resident Evil: Revelations boasts a return to the earlier series style of games – where you had limited ammo and the game centered around puzzle solving and exploration.

For the 3DS version, the camera is set in the over-the-shoulder position and the protagonist is able to move will firing a weapon (with the option of switching between first and third-person perspectives). Another feature that was implemented on the 3DS version is Raid Mode – which is pretty much a horde mode that allows two players to run through it together.

It’s not clear if these features will be implemented into the unannounced version for the Xbox 360, but when we have more details we will be sure to bring them to you!

CD Projekt Red Shows Off Cyberpunk 2077

Posted on January 10, 2013 by Joshua Rust

CD Projekt Red, if you didn’t know, is known for their amazing The Witcher franchise. Recently acquiring the rights to make a video game out of the paper-and-pen RPG, they look to expand their resume to a futuristic RPG with Cyberpunk 2077.

Here is the official announcement from CD Projekt Red about Cyberpunk 2077:

In Cyberpunk 2077, the player will be thrown into a dark future. The metropolis of Night City is a stage set to tell the tale of one individual, raised on the streets, who tries to lift himself up from the gutter and find a way to survive amongst boostergangs and megacorporations in a city of filth and sin. Drugs, violence, poverty and exclusion haven’t disappeared by 2077, as people stayed they were for centuries – greedy, closed-minded and weak. But not only ghosts of the past trouble mankind, but new issues have appeared. Psychos go on rampages and the streets are filled with junkies addicted to a new form of entertainment – the braindance, a cheap way to experience the emotions and stimuli of someone else, someone living a more exciting life.

Braindances are digital recordings of a person’s experience. The viewer can stream a braindance directly into his neural system via special brain augmentations, called a BD player. Braindances allow the viewer to experience all brain processes registered, including emotions, muscle movements and all stimuli perceived by the recording person.

The range of themes of these recordings varies from simple braindances made by megacorporations, which e.g. allow the viewer to feel the full experience of an explorer with all its thrills, sweats, smells, views, sounds and the real feeling of curiosity that pushes men to go beyond the horizon against fear and physical weakness. But there are also more controversial sides of braindance, because some recordings are created illegally in the underground. Entering the mind of a serial killer means not only seeing the monstrosity he performs, but also living his lust to kill and fulfillment.

No platforms or release date has been set for Cyberpunk 2077, but I suspect this will be a next-generation title.

Fallout 4 Announcement Imminent?

Posted on January 9, 2013 by Joshua Rust

Late last year rumors surfaced that the next Fallout game would take place in Boston. News surfacing today through Erik Todd Dellums’s Twitter account (radio DJ “Three Dog” from Fallout 3) it appears that Bethesda could be hiring him back to reprise his role from Fallout 3.

Here is the said conversation from Twitter:

@ETDellums – To all my #Fallout3 and #ThreeDog fans: There may be more of the Dog coming! Fingers crossed!

(@ToastTheRabbit)  @ETDellums any details that ya can share or is it a tight lip deal ATM?

(@ETDellums) @ToastTheRabbit How was that for a tease! I was given permission to release that tease, so fingers crossed.

So it looks like Fallout 4is indeed already in the works. We can only hope so. In my opinion Bethesda makes the best RPG’s outside of Bioware and who knows…maybe Fallout 4 will be a launch title for the next Xbox and/or PS4…

IllumiRoom Concept Unveiled By Microsoft

Posted on January 9, 2013 by Joshua Rust

Today at CES 2013 in Las Vegas Microsoft has revealed a new proof-of-concept called IllumiRoom.

Combining Kinect and a projector, IllumiRoom will illuminate the area around your television with digital projections of the scenery within the game. Cool right? Microsoft states that IllumiRoom will “change the appearance of the room, induce apparent motion, extend the field of view, and enable entirely new game experiences.”

Here is a live demonstration of IllumiRoom…meaning that there is not any tampering to make this look cooler that what it actually is.

[youtube id=”re1EatGRV0w” width=”600″ height=”350″]

All of this technology will presumably on the next Xbox system that will more than likely be revealed either at E3 2013 or a month-two months before.

What games could really use this technology to it’s fullest that are released right now? Skyrim, Far Cry 3, Lost Planet?

Tomb Raider Multiplayer Video From Square Enix

Posted on January 8, 2013 by Joshua Rust

I won’t lie and say that I was happy when Square Enix announced that Tomb Raider would be receiving a multiplayer component to a single player franchise.  I’m an avid Tomb Raider fan and while I know why developers/publishers want to include multiplayer in single player games sometimes I believe it affects the outcome of the single player game. While Square Enix has assured the media that it won’t have any effect on the quality of the single player campaign, I guess we will play the waiting game to see if that is indeed the case. Let’s hope so. A prime example of this would be Dead Space…do you remember Dead Space 2’s multiplayer? Yeah, me neither.

Hopefully I’m wrong about this and Tomb Raider multiplayer turns out to be completely amazing (which I do hope for). There are some games that adding a multiplayer component has indeed expanded the lifetime of the game – look at Mass Effect 3, it has a ton of success from adding a multiplayer component. But the thing is, it’s cooperative…not competitive.

So here is the first look at Tomb Raider’s multiplayer (starts at about the 4:35 mark):

[youtube id=”aOPONlOqxFY” width=”600″ height=”350″]

So what do you all think about the addition of competitive multiplayer to Tomb Raider? For it or against it? Tomb Raider launches March 5th, 2013.

Pokemon X & Y Mark Leap To Nintendo 3DS, Releases This Fall

Posted on January 8, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Those little Pocket Monsters have been confined to the Nintendo 3DS for the better part of seven years now, but no longer are they stuck in the previous generation with the announcement of Pokemon XY. Two new games, Pokemon Y and Pokemon X are in development for the Nintendo 3DS, marking the series’ six generation of games, after the release of Black & White for the DS in 2010.

Pokemon X & Y will utilize the system’s 3DS capabilities as well providing a large graphical leap in terms of character animations and presentation.  In the new debut trailer we get a really good look at how crisp and smooth the game is when compared to its predecessors. Battles still take place in the traditional “behind the back” style but are spruced up with gorgeously detailed and fluid artwork.

Pokemon X & Y will be released worldwide this October for the Nintendo 3DS!

Check out the embedded trailer to find out why I am excited for a Pokemon game for the first time in half a decade!
