Zombies Are Invading Counter-Strike: Global Offensive!

Posted on August 17, 2012 by Seung Lee

Valve has teamed up with a mod team over at PlagueFest, a community site that works on mods for games like Counter-Strike: Source and ArmA II, to create a zombie mod for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. This content will be available on only the PC version of the game (99% sure here), and you won’t have to wait to test it out, because it’ll release on the same day as Global Offensive.

This certainly isn’t the first time that we’ve seen zombies in a first-person shooter. Treyarch’s recent Call of Duty games and ArmA II are the most popular  in the market right now. Will Global Offensive be able to match these games? We’ll have to see.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive releases on the PS3, Xbox 360, PC, and Mac on August 21. Check out the game’s official website here.

Killzone Mercenary Coming To PS Vita

Posted on August 14, 2012 by Rae Michelle Richards

The Killzone franchise is coming to the PlayStation Vita in the near future (presumably 2013) with the announcement of Killzone Mercenary. Sony showcased a brief live action/gameplay trailer during their media presentation.

This is just pure speculation but the live action showcases a mercenary making his way through what seems to be an industrial facility. On the gameplay front we see the same character (we presume) performing brutal neck snaps and ranking up experience points for every kill. Could this be an indication of the series awesome multiplayer making the jump to the Vita? Perhaps Mercenary devaites from the established formula?

IGN reports that the game will utilize touch controls.  This is not surprising since every first party title has made use of the touchscreen, analog buttons and gyro sensors. It would make sense that Killzone Mercenary would take full advantage of the system’s capabilities.

We have more questions than answers right now, but we should know more later this afternoon. Keep your eyes on the official playstation blog as they are set to reveal new information about Mercenary  later today.

Sleeping Dogs Won’t Be So Sleepy With Six Months Of DLC

Posted on August 13, 2012 by Seung Lee

It’s a recent business practice that I can’t stand: creating “new” content for purchase immediately after a game releases. Capcom has been guilty of doing this for a while (see Street Fighter x Tekken), and now Square-Enix is going to join in on the trend. Sleeping Dogs will have six months of planned DLC, which is already frustrating to hear.

I can appreciate wanting to extend the lifespan of your game, but not when the DLC in question seems to consist of nothing but clothing packs and weapon packs. You can expect a number of downloads for Sleeping Dogs, such as a Retro Triad Pack that features a “killer old school outfit with its own player buffs and funky kung-fu van.” Then, in September, there’ll be a high-speed Racing Pack and a SWAT Pack. So, the DLC seems to be somewhat cosmetic and unimpressive for those who simply want to play the game. I suppose if you really enjoy Sleeping Dogs, that you might want to check this DLC out, depending on how much it costs.

See Square-Enix’s press release on the matter by reading more.

First look At Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee HD And Naming Contest

Posted on August 9, 2012 by Broken Joysticks

Just Add Water unveiled a screenshot for the upcoming Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee HD remake today, on its official Facebook page. Unlike most HD editions of old games as of late, Abe’s Oddysee is being rebuilt from the ground up.

The game’s first demonstration will be shown at Eurogamer Expo, sometime during the 27th-30th of September, at the Earls Court in London. The biggest news is that at the convention, the developers will be revealing the most popular name for the game that fans voted on (that’s if you submitted an idea before tomorrow’s deadline). If you want to vote, check out the following linkOddworld: Abe’s Oddysee HD (which probably won’t be the title) will be out sometime next year!

Warning: You May Be Flustered By This Dead Or Alive 5 Trailer

Posted on August 9, 2012 by Seung Lee

I won’t say what exactly you’ll be taken back by, because there’s actually quite a few things in this trailer for Dead or Alive 5 that caught me by surprise. I will say, however, that there’s rap, giant breasts (as to be expected of a Dead or Alive game), and an actual semblance of a plot.

Dead or Alive 5 is set to release for the PlayStation 3 on September 25th in the states, 27th in Japan, and on the 28th in Europe. American and Japanese Xbox 360 owners can also expect the game to release on the same dates as the PS3 version. The release date for the European 360 version is still unknown. Oh, and by the way, do yourself a favor and don’t read the comments on the video below. It’ll save you precious brain cells.

Namco Bandai And Sega Team Up For.. Drumming In Yakuza 5?

Posted on August 8, 2012 by Seung Lee

The Yakuza games have always had a plethora of minigames to lure players away from their main objectives, and it looks like that’ll also be the case in the fifth main installment of the series. Now, I haven’t played all of the Yakuza games, but I do remember there being a rhythm game of sorts in 3. There’s no info yet on what exactly all of the minigames will be in Yakuza 5, but we now know that one of them will be a joint collaboration between Namco Bandai Games and Sega.

Andriasang managed to get a hold of this week’s Famitsu, a popular Japanese gaming magazine, and learned about this new minigame. Taiko: Drum Master was an arcade drumming game, developed by Namco (this was before the merge with Bandai), that was then ported over to the PlayStation 2. An arcade machine with this game will be available to play in Yakuza 5, with songs such as Mappy Ondo and Shinsekai Yori (just as clueless as you are as to what these songs are). Let’s just hope that it won’t be too difficult to play, considering that it IS Japan after all..

Now, I haven’t mentioned this yet, but Yakuza 5 isn’t even confirmed for release outside of Japan. It’ll be out in December ’12 for the PS3 over there. As for when the rest of us will get it, we’ll have to see. Considering that all past four main installments of the series have made it to the rest of the world, it’s safe to say that us non-Japanese fluent people will be able to return to the Land of the Rising Sun next year.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale PaRappa the Rapper Video

Posted on August 8, 2012 by Broken Joysticks

With the public beta for SuperBot Entertainment’s PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale almost upon us, the PlayStation blog has unveiled a video that shows off some neat tricks for a fan favorite from the original PS era, PaRappa the Rapper. His playstyle draws from his love of music, skateboarding abilities, and rapid kung-fu moves.

PaRappa’s impressive mobility makes it easy for him to get in close and wail on his opponent(s). This is great because he’s primarily a close range fighter. One of our paper-thin friend’s specials has him dropping a boombox (Boxxy Boy from the two games) and generates AP. This move, however, can also be used by the opponent(s). PaRappa’s level 1 attack is a quick, but short range flip kick from his skateboard. His level 2 attack has him riding on his skateboard (FYI, he can be controlled during this) for a distance on the screen. Lastly, we have the level 3 attack, which changes the screen to a concert, reminiscent of his game. The cool thing about this move is that it’s one of the few screen clearing specials in the game!

That’s A Lot Of Levels For LittleBigPlanet

Posted on August 6, 2012 by Seung Lee

LBP

Media Molecule, the team behind LittleBigPlanet, has revealed today that seven million levels (and still going strong!) have been created across all of the games for the franchise. It hasn’t been too long since the very first LBP was released on the PS3 in ’08. Now, I’m not going to say each of these seven million levels are amazing, or worth your time to play, but you can’t say that you’re not getting bang for your buck with a LBP game.

Check out Media Molecule’s blog post celebrating the recent accomplishment here, and see the picture detailing it here.

Next Ratchet & Clank Features Tower Defense

Posted on July 19, 2012 by Rae Michelle Richards

James from Insomniac Games published a guest post over at the PlayStation Blog outlining some brand new features coming to their latest game, Rachet and Clank: Full Frontal Assault. While the game returns to the classic third person, behind the player, combat we’re all used too – Insomniac has also introduced a new tower defense mechanic.

In addition to the addition of tower defense mechanic, which will hopefully be further detailed in the future,  the game also adds the ability to chose between 3 different heroes – Ratchet, Clank, or Captain Qwark and an online mode.

Head over the PlayStation Blog for additional info, or check out a few new screenshots after the jump.Read More

Cole MacGrath and Jack & Daxter Confirmed For Battle Royale

Posted on July 16, 2012 by Rae Michelle Richards

Electricity and fur collide with the announcement of Jack & Daxter and Cole McGrath as playable characters in PlayStation All-Star Battle Royal. Over the weekend at ComiCon Sony confirmed that the lightening empowered hero from Infamous and Infamous 2 will be shocking his way onto the battlefield along with Jack and his wisecracking fur-ball Daxter (okay no more puns I promise).

Jack & Daxter, like the Ice Climbers in Super Smash Bros, fight in a pair within close proximity of each other. Cole of course prefers to deliver deeply voiced narratives to himself while on the battlefield.

Along with the new character announcements Sony released a two new trailers featuring these 2 characters from the PS3 version of the game. Check them out below:Read More

Sony Buys Cloud Service Gaikai

Posted on July 2, 2012 by Kirk Williford

Sony has announced that they completed a deal last Friday to acquire gaming cloud service Gaikai. The service, similar to OnLive, cost Sony $380 million. The deal was originally rumored to be announced at E3 last month.

“By combining Gaikai’s resources including its technological strength and engineering talent with SCE’s extensive game platform knowledge and experience, SCE will provide users with unparalleled cloud entertainment experiences,” said Sony Computer Entertainment President and Group CEO Andrew House.

Cloud gaming allows gamers to play a game without having to run it on the local hardware, enabling high-quality games to be played on consoles, phones and apps with less than high quality hardware — all though streaming. This acquisition could be a major player for the next generation of consoles — perhaps Sony will use Gaikai’s services as an incentive for a cheaper SKU that is still capable of playing all PS4 titles. Or perhaps we won’t even need a new console at all, streaming all next gen titles directly to the PS3? Only time will tell!
