Ark Survival Evolved is having a free weekend RIGHT NOW

Posted on July 29, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

You know we love Ark: Survival Evolved. Everyone here on staff plays it. Our little dino fort might not be the type to make others stop and go OOOHHH. But we loved poppin in for a few hours to harvest or hunt in the vast world ARC offers.

This weekend everyone can try that dino riding, fort building, awesome fun for free. Even better Arc just dropped a huge content update. Studio Wildcard is truly ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ today after releasing a content-rich package (v245) offering ARK: Survival Evolved players a mega update to fantasy map The Center while fully launching Primitive+, the second player-created mod to be made an official part of the ARK game. Studio Wildcard also has brought to life two new creatures, Pelagornis and Allosaurus, and has materialized a new fishing rod and fishing mechanic, along with a flurry of additional gameplay features. All content is available starting today as a free download on Steam PC.

Its free to play right now ARK: Survival Evolved also is on sale for Steam players at 50% off (retail $29.99) from Thursday, July 28, through Wednesday, August 3, 2016. But, thats not all!  there is also Free ARK DLC

Newly available as part of the ‘ARK Official Mods Program’ today, Primitive+ is a functionality mod playable on all official ARK maps that challenges players to use only weapons and tools using wood and stone, without the benefit of advanced metals to create weapons such as guns. It’s a whole new set of items and detailed mechanics focused on ‘primitive’ survival, which fits snugly in the world of ARK.

The Center, a massive free DLC map that was first released in May 2016, expanded today to include new biomes, islands, caves, and creature spawns. The Center was created by modder Ben Burkart as part of the ‘ARK Official Mods Program’ and complements the current biomes with a rich, hand-drawn Tolkien-esque aesthetic. The Center’s massive map doubles the in-game playable geography of the already enormous ARK landscape making it 70 sq. kilometers filled with stunning lighting effects, lava rivers, giant picturesque mountains, misty floating islands, ancient underground ice caves, and more.

ARK v245 New Creatures
Pelagornis (Species Pelagornis miocaenus): This creature is instantly recognizable from the more common Icthyornis by its size. With a wingspan rivaling Argentavis, it also possesses a beak filled with tooth-like projections for snagging fish and webbed feet for paddling upon the ocean surface. Because of its ability to fly, walk, and surface-swim, a tamed Pelagornis is one of the island’s most versatile mounts, though this comes at a cost. The same webbed feet that allow Pelagornis to serenely maneuver along the ocean’s surface prevent it from snatching prey from the ground, which may limit its appeal to some survivors.

Allosaurus (Species Allosaurus therotribus): Smaller but faster than Tyrannosaurus, larger but slower than Carnotaurus, Allosaurus is the island’s resident pack-hunting theropod. While most aggressive theropods are relatively solitary creatures, Allosaurus lives in groups of three. One Allosaurus is the Pack Leader, while the others are its mates or a beta male. The Allosaurus has evolved to hunt in packs. Its saw-shaped teeth leave its prey bleeding and maimed, making escape difficult. Once an Allosaurus slows a creature with its cutting bite, the rest of its pack quickly close in for the kill…

Additional Update v245 Content Includes:

  • New Item: Fishing Rod + Fishing Mechanic! Be a pro fisherman as you apply varied bait, cast the line, wait for a fish to become ensnared, and then succeed at a mini-game to reel the fish and claim copious rewards!
  • New Structure: Industrial Grinder that grinds items into a portion of their crafting resources, then converts resources into simpler resources
  • New Structure: Spiral Staircase (Stone/Wood/Metal)
  • New Mechanic: Optional Hitmarkers for ranged attacks (server can toggle them, as well as client if the server allows it)
  • Building Attack/Destruction TribeLogs

That is quite a list of free stuff! So get out there and give it a try!

VIZ Media to develop RWBY titles with Rooster Teeth

Posted on July 29, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

RWBY has been a run away success, with millions of eager Anime Fans devouring the series as fast as Rooster Teeth can make it.  RWBY still holds a record for being the first (and only) Western animated show to ever be dubbed in Japanese and distributed in Japan. The partnership Kicks Off With Publication of RWBY Manga Title In 2017, With Other Books Based On The Smash Hit Animated Series Forthcoming

VIZ Media, a premier company in the fields of publishing, animation distribution, and global entertainment licensing, has announced a partnership with Rooster Teeth. Rooster Teeth is an Austin, TX-based entertainment and media company behind the globally acclaimed animated series RWBY, the first western anime series to be distributed to Japan.

The Girls of RWBY

The Girls of RWBY

RWB what now?

RWBY is Rooster Teeth’s award-winning anime series that tells the story of four different girls brought together for one legendary purpose. Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang are students at Beacon Academy, an ancient school designed to train the monster-slayers knows as Hunters and Huntresses. Unfortunately, monsters aren’t the only threat in the world of Remnant, and if these girls want to graduate, they’ll have to learn to work together  both on the battlefield and in the classroom. So basically its a classic highschool super powers anime.  Only its not really an anime since its not made in Japan, but its at least as good as most of the anime coming out of Japan.

So its gonna be a manga now?

Pretty much yah. Beth Kawasaki Editoral director of VIZ said in the press release. “The Rooster Teeth-VIZ Media partnership will showcase the strong creative vision and production expertise between our two entertainment companies to expand the vivid and exciting world of RWBY globally in bold new ways that fans will love,”

While Head of Rooster Teeth Animation Gray G. Haddock also expressed interest saying ““We are thrilled to be working with VIZ Media to bring such beautiful books to RWBY’s audience.”

The new books will go more in to back story of the RWBY world, and work to expand whats already there. If you are a fan these manga and possibly light novels are for sure worth checking out.

Revelation Online Reveals Character Classes in new videos

Posted on July 24, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Revelation Online is  game I have had my eyes on for quite a while. Another story driven eastern MMO thats on its way to the states. It features an action combat system, a deep character creator, and of course flying. Its been just a few weeks since we first heard that my.com and netease would be bringing this game across from Asia, but already news is pouring in about it. I wont try to convince you that this is some new WOW killer (it isint) or that you will be stopping your current obsession with Blade and Soul in favor of this game, but you may want to at least give it a try.

Revelation Online is a takes place in the land of Nuanor. Explore a vibrant world of ancient mystery, and use the power of flight to experience absolute freedom. Spread your wings or master one of the many aerial mounts to soar through the sky. Dive into the waters or climb to the top of the world. The game features the ability to basically go anywhere you can see. Videos of play on the Asian Servers also feature a large amount of flying with wings that are unique to each character.

So about those classes:

  • Blademaster: As secondary tanks and close combat specialists, they combine their twin blade damage with escape skills, allowing them to cut through wave after wave of enemies. Their heavy reliance on melee attacks leaves them open to ranged assaults.
  • Vanguard: These steel walls rely on melee combat. Their chief strength is surviving battles of attrition, rather than dealing burst damage.
  • Swordmage: While wielding a falchion, they are focused on powerful magic damage, specializing in areas of effect spells. They invest all of their energy in sharpened elemental magic, leaving them relatively vulnerable to focused attacks.
  • Occultist: They deliver a wide variety of dark offensive spells, from damage-over-time, to area-of-effect attacks, to those that deal damage while siphoning enemy health. Occultists can directly heal allies as well.
  • Spiritshaper: As summoners and healers, they are relatively easy to play and have great survival skills. They are highly sought after on teams for their support and deceitfully high damage output.
  • Gunslinger: With high precise damage, they hunt down individual targets from afar or use advanced weaponry for mid-range deterrence. Gunslingers have few control skills and are less effective in close combat.

Players can pick their own play style by distributing points to their character attributes, such as strength and dexterity past level 40. All classes have diverse skill sets, with over 20 unique skills, which can be further upgraded past level 49 to match the chosen play style. Players are in full control over their class progression.

Look for some video content from Brokenjoysticks on this game when it finally arrives on US shores

Escape from Tarkov reveals first location for closed Alpha

Posted on July 21, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

So, if you have been following Escape from Tarkov at all, you know its been plagues with slowness, developer problems, and a severe lack of information. Well, Battlestate Games has released a new screenshot pack from its in-development title Escape from Tarkov. So, now you can look at how pretty it is. You know, because gameplay is less important than graphics.

Battlestate Games says the new screen shots are from the Alpha, presumably meaning that the game is at least in a partly finished state. The screen shots show the area “The Customs”.

In “The Customs” most of the abandoned or occupied places are guarded by bands of civilian Scavengers who took over most of the Tarkov when the conflict started. These ‘Scavs’ are desperate for loot and ruthless in protecting what they have managed to salvage.

eft_prealpha_interface_inventory_gear

The game features an extensive inventory system

Escape from where now?

Ill forgive you for not knowing that this game is coming up. Mostly because I also had no idea. It’s basically an atmospheric survival/shooter, very similar to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series, only it’s also an MMO.

Escape from Tarkov is a hardcore story-driven MMO featuring elements of FPS and RPG. The events take place in the Russian city of Tarkov, which has been sealed of by roadblocks and sunk into the chaos of local warfare between private military companies. Escape from Tarkov’s Hazardous Environment Combat Simulator employs a number of custom system modules to create incredibly immersive gameplay and make players feel the reality of what is happening in the game.

eft_prealpha_interface_modding

Weapon modding is also present

Why do I care?

Survival games aren’t for everyone, sure. But, for this game, you can expect a sort of fall out meets Day Z vibe. A huge part of the game will no doubt be just surviving. Since this is supposed to be like S.T.A.L.K.E.R I assume that bullets will be scarce, and you will have to save them for when you most need. There has never really been a good MMO like this before. So, this is new ground. Also this game is pretty, so its better than other games, because it has graphics. If you want to sign up for the Alpha you can do it here.

Good luck out there.

Party Hard delivers slow methodical action | Review

Posted on July 20, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Do your neighbors annoy you? Do you like killing? If you answered yes to either of these, you might like Party Hard. Ill set the stage for you. You’re a masked serial killer just trying to get some sleep. Its 3am and your neighbors are really, really, loud. So you kill them, all of them, while they party.

That’s basically the whole game. But its all wrapped up in a really great package of pixely carnage action. It also has a ton of environmental things to play with. So Enviroment + killing + stupid neighbors = a fun action game. It all seems pretty simple I’ll admit but what it adds up to is more than the sum or its parts.

The game doesn’t have so much of a story as it does a singular purpose. Stop the noise. But this isint madness interactive (vaunted flash game of the 00s), no your not going to be blowing people away with a vast array of weapons and explosives. Instead its all about the planning, patience and carefully laid traps.

Look at all these loud people. Better kill them all

Look at all these loud people. Better kill them all

Gameplay

Each level starts off with you outside a house full of excited partying people. These people are all busy with their own stuff, they are drinking, getting lewd, smoking drugs. Whatever you do at parties.  Your job is to kill them all. But this isn’t hit man, you don’t even have a gun. You’re going to need to kill them with smarts, and well laid traps. Rather than brute force.

So how do you kill them then? Well there are a lot of options. You can set up traps, you can stab people, you can lead them to poison themselves. There are dozens of ways. Levels get more difficult as you go, primarily by having more people around you, and less traps. A good example of one of these traps is setting a stove to blow up, or poisoning the keg.

Each level also has random events that trigger when you are on the level. So you might get a dark coated man who gives you an item, or there might a drug deal in the back that provides chemicals or weapons.  The cool thing is that these seem to be random, and so you can end up having almost anything happen in almost any level.  You can expose the drug deals as well, and this also casuses chaos, with the police showing up and shooting everyone.

The police are as much of a problem as a help in this game, when you start killing people. So once you kill people with your knife, the most basic of tools, you will be able to expand out to more exciting things. Like setting down a stun bomb you got from that strange in the overcoat, or poisoning the keg.

The game features a great soundtrack of intense EDM music. Exactly what you would expect at a party I suppose. The game really feels methodical. You cant just run in and start stabbing everyone. Careful planning and attention to available environmental traps is important.

The game is played from the top down, similar to that other slaughter fest that is Hot line Miami. If Hotline Miami is a game of speed, this is a game of chess. Its slow and methodical. It has some hectic moments sure, I misplaced kill can result in you running after someone trying to stop them setting up the alarm. But those are rare moments. Most of the time your going to need to carefully plan out where and when you kill people.

Hitman penalizes you for killing, this game rewards you. In each party there will be a large number of people, your job is to kill them. You can set rooms on fire, blow things up, use poison whatever, doesn’t matter. As long as they end up dead. I found myself mostly stabbing people because that was easiest. I also used a lot of poison and one or two explosive traps, since those tend to get a larger number of people at once.

a good start

Just about halfway through now

Is there any story?

The games story plays out in between each part, where a hard boiled detective will try to track you down. Each of these little vignettes is a refreshing breather from the intensity of the part with its nonstop EDM music. Both the cut scenes and the game are in a pixel style.  I like the pixel style because it plays down the gore a bit. Partiers can still explode in to pools of red blood and bits of things, but since they are pixelated its less offensive.

This is a punishingly difficult game, several times I ended up getting caught and losing the level. This results in a total start over, no check points. On a level where you might have to kill 40 or 50 people it can take 20 minutes to carefully lay everything up.

Each level is well designed, with a lot of rooms with doors that close, exit points, and traps for the party goers. Sadly this is where we start to end up with a problem. Levels are different in layout, but all of the goals are the same. The game has one one goal, and you are the lone agent of that goal.

The Games first level tell you the controls, there are three you can see them all on screen here.

The Games first level tell you the controls, there are three you can see them all on screen here.

The verdict

I do have to say at least one bad thing about every game, so for this one I am picking its length and lack of diversity. Though the levels change, most players will quickly fatigue with having to kill two or three dozen people without being caught. Killing so many works well in games like Hot Line Miami because of the frantic pacing, but this game features a much slower methodical approach. Much time is spent simply waiting. Waiting for one person to walk away from the group to kill them. Waiting for a planted bomb to be in just the right place to go off. Waiting for the police to arrive, search, and then leave. It is for sure a waiting game.

There are also some great moments as well. When you plant the bomb in the right place, and it kills half a dozen partiers, when a cop car screams up and kills 4 or 5 with no care at all. Some moments feel fun and unplanned. One level featured a meth lab in the back, and totally with out my prompting a fight broke out there. This fight caused a fire, which killed many people. Through it all the DJ partied on.

There is even some room for humor, subtle jokes abound. My favorite is the ability to make the protagonist dance to the frantic techo that’s going on all around him as he kills his way through the game.  I found myself often just sort of standing and listening to music. Sadly the game has a few bugs that make it more difficult to play. Invisible phones  have got to be the worst of all of these, as party patrons use phones to summon police. So, if you don’t know when they are coming, you will lose every time. Over all for the price point I think this game is well done and would recommend it.

Other than the eternally slow pace, I have very little bad to say about this game. Glitches can (and presumably will) be patched later on. Many people will no doubt take the timing of my review to be poor in light of recent events. However, I do not believe that this is a game of the type that promotes violence.  Its cartoony aesthetic and lack of any realistic violence make it much less a murder simulator and much more just a fun game. Over all I give this game a buy it rating, it is out now on IOS Android, PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

Brokenjoysticks was provided a copy of the PC version for review.

Star Wars the Old Republic is Still Alive

Posted on July 19, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Remember Star Wars the Old Republic? The now free to play BioWare MMO that was the successor to Knights of the Old Republic, but lacked all of its charm, story and fun? Well, I do. That game actually soured me on playing any more Star Wars games. I havent touched any since, so poorly handled was the game. Well, now BioWare wants you to come back, and play a little more. Announcing today their new expansion for the already free to play game, which will be called.

Knights of the Eternal Throne

There you go. This is a five year old game people. Im surprised I even saw this story on the news wire today at all. Though ToR still has a small dedicated fan group. It is by no means a successful MMO. What started out as a paid monthly wow like game, eventually devolved in to the worst free to play garbage that existed.

Following on from the story-driven Knights of the Fallen Empire, the latest entry will feature more of BioWare’s trademark cinematic storytelling, as well as exciting new game features. So I expect a lot of running around doing things, and talking to people. Can we be done with story driven MMO’s yet?

Right now all you can really do is sign up at the website and see a fancy animation. Go here to do that if for some reason you are a serious Star Wars fan, or still playing this game.

When KOTET does arrive, it will align with The Old Republic’s fifth anniversary which EA and Bioware have marked with a celebratory blog post from director of design James Ohlen; an infographic which, among other things, notes players have sunk an impressive 1.5 million hours into SW:TOR since 2011; a handy collection of the game’s trailers; and this video.

So good luck out there, hopefully this expansion doesn’t suck as much as the last one did. Knights of the Eternal Throne is expected to launch in “Fall 2016”.

Nintendo announces Mini Collector’s Edition NES

Posted on July 14, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Its what you always wanted right? Ok, maybe not. But its a good start. After the success of Pokemon Go it seems Nintendo have decided that cashing in on nostalgia will be their business strategy. I am not at all surprised to see Nintendo announce something like this. Its a good time for retro. 30 retro games, in a nice tiny package, just in time for holiday! Its a good time to be a Nintendo shareholder.

Ok so what is it already

Its an NES, but tiny, and with an HDMI port. Its going to be ready packed with 30 games. Nintendo of Canada’s General Manager and Senior Director Pierre-Paul Trepanier said of the device.  “We wanted to give fans of all ages the opportunity to revisit Nintendo’s original system and rediscover why they fell in love with Nintendo in the first place The Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition is ideal for anyone who remembers playing the NES, or who wants to pass on those nostalgic memories to the next generation of gamers.”

Nintendo says this is a near identical mini replica, I assume the buttons wont work, as the thing is literally palm sized, and that also means all the games are emulated. Two player support is confirmed with a second controller costing 10$

The NES Classic will be available to purchase in stores on Nov. 11 for $59.99. All of games available to play on the console are listed below.

This looks like something that I would find at walgreens

This looks like something that I would find at Walgreens when I forgot to buy a toy for a kids birthday

What games?

The system comes packaged with an HDMI cable, an AC adapter, and one NES Classic Controller. But you really just want to know the full list of 30 games, right? Here it is.

·      Balloon Fight

·      BUBBLE BOBBLE

·      Castlevania

·      Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest

·      Donkey Kong

·      Donkey Kong Jr.

·      DOUBLE DRAGON II: THE REVENGE

·      Dr. Mario

·      Excitebike

·      FINAL FANTASY®

·      Galaga

·      GHOSTS’N GOBLINS®

·      GRADIUS

·      Ice Climber

·      Kid Icarus

·      Kirby’s Adventure

·      Mario Bros.

·      MEGA MAN® 2

·      Metroid

·      NINJA GAIDEN

·      PAC-MAN

·      Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream

·      StarTropics

·      SUPER C

·      Super Mario Bros.

·      Super Mario Bros. 2

·      Super Mario Bros. 3

·      TECMO BOWL

·      The Legend of Zelda

·      Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Man thats a lot of games, if your still reading I applaud you, I know i stopped after about 10. Some good stuff in there including the two Zelda titles and the three Mario titles. Since the games are just emulated im guessing plenty of people will love this thing for homebrew. So the list of titles may expand.

One of the many titles I got the chance to see at PAX east was Assault Suit Lynos. A game about mechs, flying, destroying things, and well not much else. Now  publisher Rising Star Games have brought this love letter to mechs to PS4. I loved the 2d flat arty take on mechs that I got to play at Pax East, and it looks like from the launch trailer that that action is still there.

Based on the legendary classic 16-bit series (also known as Target Earth), the Assault Suit series is famous for fierce and fast shooting action, a tactical variety of missions, and wonderful weapon customization options. When I played it the action was fast, the enemies were strong.

Were gonna need a bigger... gun?

Were gonna need a bigger… gun?

Lee Skittrell  the marketing director for Rising Star games said of  Assault Suit: “The biggest, best and most thrilling summer blockbusters always feature an alien menace to conquer, Assault Suit Leynos stands confidently alongside the most explosive sci-fi smash hits, with its faithful HD remaster and – via a host of new gameplay features – retooling of, a much-loved classic from the halcyon days of console gaming.”

So is there a story?

yes, and here it is. As Earth reels from the impact of a fourth world war and dwindling resources, an uneasy truce between nations sees mankind reach for the stars. Colonies are settled, resources are mined, and the future starts looking a little brighter. Just as peace finally seems possible, an unknown enemy emerges from the deepest region of space to threaten the very existence of humanity. Only one thing can stop them – it’s time to deploy the Assault Suit Squadron! Gamers will blast through the opposing enemy forces with devastating weapons like machine guns, rocket launchers, and laser beams, all while discovering the hidden truth behind the invaders.

Sounds pretty generic, but hey its a game about mechs that shoot stuff, go play it trust me you will love it.
