ARK Survival Evolved Coming To Nintendo Switch This Fall

Posted on March 23, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Studio Wildcard’s hugely successful futuristic / prehistoric mash-up survival game Ark: Survival Evolved will be coming to the Nintendo Switch in both physical and digital formats this Fall. The impending release of ARK in a few months time will mark the release of one of the first games on Nintendo’s hybrid platform to run on Unreal Engine 4.

Announced during the “State of Unreal Engine” panel at the Games Developer Conference 2018, the Switch port of ARK will be handled by developer Abstraction Games. Switch players will be able to enjoy all of the content from the original version of ARK: Survival Evolved including over 100 prehistoric and fantasy creatures, deep crafting mechanics and of course the unique dinosaur taming mechanic.

Also shown off at GDC was the mobile version of ARK, which I got the chance to see running in person. It pretty much faithfully recreates the PC experience on a smaller scale from the look of things. The mobile version of ARK: Survival Evolved will be coming to iOS and Android later this year and is available for pre-registration now – which you can do here.

If you want to see (briefly) what ARK looks like on Switch, check out a brief minute clip that was shown to crowd at GDC:

Studio Wildcard’s Lead Programmer, Co-Creator of ARK and Lead Designer had this to say about the forthcoming Switch port:

“With this new version, Switch players can go directly from hunting and taming while sitting on the couch, to forming online tribes and searching out new conquests when on the bus, waiting in line, or wherever they happen to be.”

Getting To Quake Champions Hasn’t Been Cheaper With New $4.99 Entry Level Pack

Posted on March 19, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

The arena FPS genre hasn’t exactly been a hotbed of activity – especially with games like Battleborn and Unreal Tournament 4 seeming to cease development. Bethesda’s Quake Champions might be the last true arena deathmatch FPS game in production, not counting the AFPS indie offspring like DUSK and TOKIK.

Previously access to Quake Champions was divided between the previous closed beta test players who are able to play the game in “free to play mode” through the Bethesda Launcher or by purchasing the $29.99 USD “Champions Pack” which provides access to the Quake Champions client and all of the released / future champions.

Now players on Steam have the chance to get access to the base game for $4.99 USD which includes unlocks for two champions – Ranger and Scalebearer. Ranger will be unlocked for all players by default whether they’re playing in F2P mode or this newly released $5 pack. Scalebearer is an interesting choice to provide at a low cost – he’s a giant hulking tank class champion who has a plentiful health pool and is able to obliterate enemies in his way with his charge ultimate. Truth be told Scalebearer is probably my favorite champion in the game with the versatility that his kit can provide.

Quake Champions exited closed beta last August and has been available in Early Access ever since. It does make use of micro-transactions and blind RNG boxes (both provided for “free” and paid with in-game currency for real money). We’ve covered in the past why RNG boxes in AAA games can set a bad precident and be harmful to players in general but also those with addictive tendencies.

GameCube Classic Luigi’s Mansion Being Remade For 3DS

Posted on March 15, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Revealed during last week’s Nintendo Direct presentation, the classic GameCube launch title Luigi’s Mansion is being remade for the Nintendo 3DS. It has been 17 years since Mario’s brother strapped on the Poltergust 3000 vacuum cleaner in a bid to clean up the mansion of spirits in order to free Mario.

This remake will feature the same levels and gameplay that made the original such an odd but delightful departure from the series formula. It also has some really cool 90s era Nintendo throwbacks like the “Game Boy Horror” used by Professor E-Gad resembling the design of the Gameboy Color, right down to the font.

Luigi’s Mansion should feel right at home using the parallax 3D effect of the Nintendo 3DS given that the original had support for older stereoscopic 3D technology and was even tested on an official Nintendo branded LCD screen that never saw an official commercial release. As such the stereoscopic 3D effect can only be enabled by the use of hacking devices like the GameShark as it was never intended to be used by the end user.

It is not yet known if an external developer is handling the GameCube to 3DS transition for the game. In 2013 Next Level Games released a sequel to the 2001 title on the 3DS titled Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon.

The Mean Greens Will Get Bots In Future Update

Posted on March 14, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Plastic army infantry simulator and indie spiritual successor to the long dormant Army Men franchise, The Mean Greens will be receiving the much requested addition of online/offline bots in a future update. This news isn’t particularly new, the development of bots was originally revealed on Christmas Day but given that The Mean Greens is a smaller title with a very small player-base I thought it’d be a good reminder to our readers who maybe haven’t had a chance to play the game.

Supporting modes like free-for-all deathmatch and team death-match, The Mean Greens casts players as the tiny army soldiers that some of us may remember from childhood. Amusingly the arenas can range from lovingly crafted domestic settings like the inside of a bathroom, to toy castles constructed from wooden blocks to the inside of an aquarium.

I’ve enjoyed my time with The Mean Greens: Plastic Warfare, so much so that I even bought my own copy after playing it at a few conventions.  Sadly with player counts sometimes dipping into the single digits it can be difficult to find a single server that is populated enough to start a match. Here’s hoping that the eventual addition of bots will make The Mean Greens a little less barren.

Final Fantasy XIV’s Eureka Is A Fun Grind The Mixes Up Existing Mechanics In A Fresh Way

Posted on March 13, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

The latest patch for Final Fantasy XIV Online: Stormblood has arrived and with it a brand new land for level 70 adventurers to explore. The lost island of Eureka awaits players brave enough to explore a large open world map filled with challenging monsters as well as the return of a mechanics from both the 1.0 days of FFXIV and systems from Squeenix’s sibling MMO Final Fantasy XI!

What Is Eureka

Before discussing how Eureka’s new systems work and what it feels like to play for an extended period of time, there’s some background information that I need to get out of the way. The lost island of Eureka is a direct replacement for the Relic Weapon quests that were present in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn and Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward. In those quests you’d go to existing zones from the current version alongside farming older content in order to complete the steps required to get your glowy relic weapons. Eureka takes this idea and advances it one step further by melding in mechanics from the Heavansward group content known as The Diadem from Patch 3.1.

Here’s a point by point breakdown describing the new content awaiting adventures provided by Square Enix PR:

The Forbidden Land, Eureka Anemos, is an expansive, unexplored area that brings a number of changes to the normal pillars of gameplay:

  • Field Area-Style Gameplay: Up to 144 players can participate. Players are encouraged to group up with fellow adventurers to hunt notorious monsters and work towards common goals.
  • Player Progression: Players will gain elemental EXP to strengthen their ability to harness the elements, but will need to be careful. Death in Eureka will result in lost EXP, and even lost levels, if players rashly rush in.
  • Altered Battle Mechanics: Additional strategy is required in battle through an element system, in which players must utilize the Magia Board to change the element affinity of their attack to oppose their enemy’s. Players will customize their Magia Board’s elemental attributes and must carefully consider their setup depending on the goal of the adventure.
  • Rewards: Players will occasionally earn protean crystals through exploration of Eureka, and may use them to enhance Eureka weapons and gear with the aid of the famed blacksmith, Gerolt.

The Thrill of Battle

For two hours this afternoon I took my level 70 Machinist, Reka Ai’a, along with my wife’s lvl 70 Paladin out to the forbidden land of Eureka to experience the changes in combat first hand. In other open world content in XIV a level 70 character can pretty much be guaranteed to shred any mob that stands in your way, although with multiple mobs this can get a little dicey.

Right off the bat I could tell that this is not the case in Eureka. The island’s open fields are littered with monsters that if you’re not careful will not think twice about teaming up to stop you dead. Unlike other instanced content in FFXIV being “level 70” doesn’t really mean much since Eureka has its own experience and leveling system known as the “elemental leveling system”. A single mob will kill you if you don’t pay attention to Eureka’s unique mechanics (more on this in a little).

Defeating mobs in Eureka (carefully) will obviously award you experience points but the gain rate isn’t the same as the base game. Instead of requiring hundreds of thousands of experience points the level up, the jump from level 1 to 2 is somewhere in the range of 1,000 or so elemental experience points. Accordingly the amount of experience earned from defeating mobs is drastically reduced when compared to base XIV and more so when compared to leveling low level jobs in XIV. Soloing Eureka content I found that I was gaining between 20 – 45 EXP per level, which sounds like a tedious grind. This is because the EXP rates in Eureka rise with a “chain bonus” similar to the one you get in dungeons for killing mobs in quick succession, but only when you are partnered with another player. Chain bonuses can work their to a 30x multiplier before eventually resetting back to 1. With an organized team or just a single other player to play with Eureka’s leveling experience can feel rewarding and challenging without feeling like a slog. In the two hours I played today I got to level 4 – so about a level every half hour, not too bad.

Elements And… Notorious Monsters???!

This brings me to the most striking difference between Eureka and the core leveling experience to be found within any of FFXIV’s other encounters – the elemental level system.  Due to some really awesome lore that I won’t spoil here, the aether on Eureka is all sorts of messed up. Monsters are a lot more powerful than their Othard or Aldenard counterparts and even the Warrior of Light’s power stands little chance against them. To combat this threat Geralt and Krile have devised an “elemental wheel” which will grand you attack bonuses and defense bonuses towards certain elements. It’s almost like the meta-game of Pokemon: Fire beats Water, Wind beats Earth etc. UI elements on your HUD will show you which element you’ll need to aspect into for either attack or defense and the key to survive encounters is swapping between these attack and defense buffs for each of your encounters at the right moment. It adds a bit more nuance to the moment to moment combat of FFXIV and once I got the hang of it, I was really enjoying it.

Lastly I’ve come to the inclusion of Notorious Monsters, super powerful boss-like creatures that occasionally spawn in Eureka’s over world. The name Notorious Monsters comes from both Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV 1.0. 2.0+’s A Rank hunts were similar to these new NMs but unlike their ARR+ brethren, Eureka’s Nortious Monsters get their own map marker and FATE spawned as soon as they enter the world. No need to sit in shout chat and hope someone calls out the location of the challenging MOB – where should you miss an A Rank you’d have to wait possibly days for a respawn. NMs in Eureka are large events with dozens upon dozens of players all vying to take part in the monster’s destruction. NMs have high health pools and mechanics that if done incorrectly can one-shot entire swaths of players.  At times with so many players present it can feel like “effects soup”, so be prepared to think fast and maybe turn down your graphical settings. Outside of Savage, it’s probably one of the most challenge things right now – especially while the community figures out the unique mechanics per mob. After the large monster goes down you’re rewarded with special crystals that can be turned in towards Relic Weapon steps and special lock boxes that have a chance to contain a Eureka exclusive glamour or a T-Rex mount. Best of all NMs spawn so frequently that I saw a number of them during my time on the island.

That about wraps up my introductory coverage of Eureka, I’ve still got about 4 levels to go before I encounter the much feared “level down” mechanic, so expect another long winded blog entry sometime in the coming weeks. My journey towards GDC also begins tomorrow – so it could be a little while before I get a chance to take the ferry to the island of Eureka for an extended stay.

What do you think about Eureka? Let me know in the comments.

Nintendo Lands Some Back Spin With New Mario Tennis Aces Details

Posted on March 9, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Yesterday during the absolutely massive Nintendo Direct presentation (which pretty much broke the internet thanks to the announcement of Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch) Nintendo also outlined a lot of the larger titles coming to Switch in the first half of the year.

One of the games ready to be served up is Mario Tennis Aces. Mario is about to share the court with Luigui, Wario, Peach, Rosalina, Wuluigi, Daisy, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Toad, Toadette and even a freaking Chain-Chomp that adorably holds its tennis racket in its mouth. In all there are 15 unique characters available to choose from.

Players have a lot of control over how they affect the ball during gameplay. Basic lobs or adding top-spin or slice to your shots is as easy as ever. A brand new feature to the Mario Tennis franchise is the addition of “Zone Shots” that allow players to aim for specific parts of the court with motion controls. If you fail to block a “Zone Shot” at the precise moment your racket will take damage. Take three Zone Shots to the racket and it’s game over, so make sure to time those blocks carefully. Each character has their own Special Shot which drains the entire energy gauge used for Zone Shots and Zone control. If an opponent’s racket takes an unblocked Special Shot, that’s it, game over.

Mario Tennis Aces will support multiple modes including a simplified “simple rulset” which only allows basic shots. Online play offers players rewards like additional costumes, new characters, tournaments and ranked play during live events. Taking a page from the Wii Sports playbook – a special motion control mode allows you to use the Joy-Cons like a real tennis racket – with Swing Mode it’s time to go back to 2006 all over again!

Mario Tennis Aces will be out on Nintendo Switch on June 22nd 2018. Check out the overview trailer below for demonstrations of all of the features discussed in this article.

H1Z1: Battle Royal Is Now Free To Play, E-Sports League Announced

Posted on March 8, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Daybreak Studios announced this morning that their once highly popular battle royale title, H1Z1: Battle Royale would no longer have an entry fee. As of today H1Z1: Battle Royale will be free to play on Steam.

For players who purchased the game for $19.99 USD between the games’ split from H1Z1: Just Survive in January 2016 and today’s free to play launch will receive a special “H1Z1 Appreciation Pack” which includes the following:

  • Gasrunner Hoodie
  • Bloom Survivor T-Shirt
  • Splinter Camo ARV
  • 10 Victory Crates
  • 10,000 Skulls

Editor’s Note: H1Z1 does use the much maligned and manipulative “loot box” mechanic which ties to drops with RNG (random number generated) aspects. Meaning you’ll pay cash up front and recieve pretty much anything in the box. Loot boxes are specifically designed to manipulate the customer into buying “just one more” and it’s a topic I’ve covered extensively.

In terms of the number of concurrent players actually waiting it out in the post apocalyptic world of H1Z1: Just Survive – according to stat tracking service Steam Charts the most popular month for the game was July 2017 when an average of 86,807 players would be trying to survive at any given moment. The player count steadily declined over the next six months with the past 30 days (prior to F2P) with an average of just 7,261 players at any given time. With just a few hours in, the playerbase has already more than doubled with 21,000 players online as of press time.

Also announced today was a partnership with Facebook for the H1Z1: Pro League which will feature 15 teams during its inaugural season.

Devil May Cry 1 HD Now Live For Twitch Prime Subscribers

Posted on March 7, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Twitch has added the much promoted free copy of the Devil May Cry HD to the Twitch Launcher for prime subscribers. To claim the free game all you have to do is head on over to http://www.twitch.tv , click on the crown and under the image of DMC click “add to library”. Like other Twitch Prime rewards, Devil May Cry HD is yours to keep even after your Twitch Prime subscription lapses.

Clearly the gratis copy of DMC1 HD is a move by Capcom to help promote the upcoming Devil May Cry HD Collection, which will see its releae on PC for the first time on March 13th. Devil May Cry HD Collection includes touched up versions of the 2001 original, the mediocre 2003 sequel Devil May Cry 2  and 2005’s Devil May Cry 3.

Several DMC games have made their way to PC over the years – namely Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition which was originally ported a year after the console release in 2006, Devil May Cry 4 which was released on PC in 2008 and Ninja Theory’s D.M.C reboot in 2013. Both 4 and D.M.C are absent from the upcoming HD Collection but can still be purchased through Steam in their original form.

Blizzard Celebrates Starcraft 20th Anniversary With Cross Game Promotional Event

Posted on March 6, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Blizzard has rolled out a whole wave of unlockable goodies across Diablo III, Starcraft 2, Overwatch, Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original Starcraft on PC. Each game has a different reward to claim ranging from small profile portraits to exclusive skins featuring Sarah Kerrigan (yay!).

Here’s a breakdown of what players of each tittle will receive should they login between today and March 31st:

  • Starcraft Remastered (full version) – Starcraft 20th Anniversary UI Skin.
  • Starcraftr II – A set of three user interface skins (one per race), a portrait and a decal.
  • World of Warcraft – /salute a Starcraft mini-pet and receive the “Salute to Starcraft” limited time achievement.
  • Overwatch – Sarah Kerrigan Ghost Skin for Widowmaker.
  • Hearthstone – Play the Starcraft themed Tavern Brawl between March 21st and 25th and receive 3 free Kobolds & Catacombs packs.
  • Heroes of the Storm – 20th anniversary Protoss, Terran and Zerg display pictures featuring artwork from the original game.
  • Diablo III – Dominion’s Revenge pet.

I’m a little disappointed in the Heroes of the Storm reward in particular. Considering the amount of Starcraft Heroes – like Raynor, Kerrigan, Tychus etc – you’d think they’d have something a little more substantial than three display pictures. Both SCII and Heroes of the Storm even share the same engine! Rumor has it the next revealed hero will be from the Starcraft Universe but the dev team could have done so muchg better here.

For more details check out the official Starcraft II site.

Black Desert Online Celebrates Second North American Anniversary

Posted on March 5, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Kakao Games announced that they are making the 2nd anniversary of the launch of Black Desert Online in North America with a special “apreciation gift” for all players on March 7th. This free gift will enable players to claim a free boss level weapon and accessory – so there’s some sought after loot being given out to mark the occasion. Subscribers, Buy to Play and even Trial Account players are eligible for the appreciation gift, so if you want to get it on this freebie make sure to sign up for Black Desert Online before Wednesday.

The March 7th game update also includes a brand new UI and Mini-map (which honestly was one of my biggest complaints when I tried it out back in January 2017). New skills will also be added for all playable classes with this next patch in addition to the Spanish localization going live.

In the past 24 months over 3 million people have purchased Black Desert Online and actively play the game. With its focus on swift action based combat, eschewing the traditional character leveling system for one based off of the gear your character equips and the often talked about flexible character creator – BDO has certainly found a niche for itself among the other MMO offerings out there.

Alongside the trailer you can see embedded above and all of the news surrounding the free anniversary gifts, the dev team also released a series of info-graphics that depict some interesting facts about the EU and NA region. While North America has a larger population than Europe, North Americans spend significantly more time in BDO when expressed as total playtime in years across the region. While NA has the lead in playtime, EU has the lead in mounts with significantly more horses than the actual player population. In North America there are literally tens of thousands of characters who haven’t collected their first mount.

March 2018 PS Plus Games, PS3 and Vita Service Ending In 2019

Posted on March 1, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

March 2018’s PlayStation Plus lineup of “free games” comes out swinging with two Sony exclusive titles for the PlayStation 4. Insomniac’a Rachel & Clank movie tie in title will be on offer until the end of this month through the PlayStation Store – if you missed the latest Robot / Lombax platforms, here is your chance. Also on PS4 is From Software’s brutally difficult but rewarding and critically acclaimed Bloodbourn. If you’re bummed that the online servers for Demon Souls were turned off last week – here’s a newer game from the same developers!

PS4 owners will actually receive 5 titles this month as Comcept’s sadly disappointing Mighty Number 9 is available on both PS3 and PS4. Indie titles Claire Extended Cut and Bombing Busters will get free releases on the PlayStation Vita and PS4 as well.

Speaking of Sony’s older systems – support for the two free PS3 and Vita titles per month will be coming to an end in 12 months time. After February 2019 free titles for PS3 and Vita will no longer be offered. Games that have already been added to your library from the previous years will of course still be available

I’m sad to see support for the PS3 and Vita go from PS+. Not only did it provide games to owners of those platforms who maybe haven’t transitioned to PS4 but also meant that it was common for an extra game or two to be available on Sony’s latest home console. Sony has confirmed that no additional PS plus benefits will take the place of the 4 games per month that they are removing. Here’s hoping they don’t decide to turn off the PS3 or Vita shop servers any time soon because I know I have way more games on both devices than will ever fit on a memory card.

Regarding the changes to the service Sony had this statement:

“We also have an important service update. Starting next year on March 8, 2019, the PS Plus monthly games lineup will focus on PS4 titles and no longer include PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita titles. This won’t affect any games you’ve already downloaded, or will download, prior to March 8, 2019. Those games will still be part of your PS Plus games library as long as you remain a member. Your game saves and other benefits of PS Plus will also remain the same – the only change is that no new PS3 and PS Vita games will be added to the PS Plus monthly games lineup beyond March 8, 2019.”
