Sony Praises Itself While Dodging The Switch Fortnite Lock-Out Issue

Posted on June 15, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

One of the biggest pieces of news that came out of Nintendo’s E3 presentation wasn’t the news that every Smash Bros character ever was returning or that an awesome mech game that opened the show developed by former Amored Core developers but one of the worst kept secrets – Fortnite has come to Nintendo Switch.

With over 2 million downloads during the first 24 hours of availability, you’d think that Fortnite on Switch has been a smashing success (heh) but not all is well in the world of Fortnite, aside from ya know the zombies.  As It turns out if you’ve ever signed into an Epic Games account on PlayStation 4 your account is permanently locked out from playing on Nintendo Switch. This means players migrating from PS4 cannot access their purchased skins, Battle Royale Battle Pass unlocks and other account bound items – this means their only option is to create a brand-new account.

Needless to say, the Fortnite community and the Nintendo Switch community are not happy:

After nearly 3 days without comment Sony gave an official statement to the BBC about the Epic Games account lockout issue and the whole thing is very embarrassing. They used the opportunity to deflect criticism of the account issue and praise themselves for having millions of subscribers on their network. Oh, and Sony also praised cross play with iOS, Android and PC while deflecting the fact that it’s their fault that Epic accounts don’t work on Nintendo Switch as detailed above.

Here’s the statement that a Sony Spokesperson gave to the BBC:

“We’re always open to hearing what the PlayStation community is interested in to enhance their gaming experience. With… more than 80 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network, we’ve built a huge community of gamers who can play together on Fortnite and all online titles. We also offer Fortnite cross-play support with PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, expanding the opportunity for Fortnite fans on PS4 to play with even more gamers on other platforms. We have nothing further to add beyond this at this point”

Remember that corporations aren’t your friends, digital “goods” like skins, consumables and unlockables aren’t owned by you and corporations can take them away or lock you out of an account at any time for any reason.

Good job Sony, /s

E3 2018: Death Stranding’s Fourth Trailer Is Just As Confusing As The Rest

Posted on June 13, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Kojima Production’s Death Stranding has been confusing viewers since its debut at E3 2016 and the previous 3 trailers gave us no reason to suspect that the first glimpse of gameplay would be any differed.  Coming in at just over 8 minutes in length, this latest look at the game confirms that Norman Reedus’ character is named ‘Sam Porter Bridges’ and that he makes deliveries. Throughout the nearly ten minute presentation we see Sam carry a number of boxes on his back, utilize motorized robots and other delivery related equipment. HOLY SHIT WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT DEATH STRANDING WAS JUST A ‘STACK STUFF ON YOURSELF SIMULATOR’..

Of course, this is Kojima and things aren’t that simple: What we do now know thanks to this trailer:

1) Parts of Sam’s name have appeared on the two different suits that he has worn in trailers 3 & 4. With ‘Bridges’ and ‘Porter’ respectively.
2) As revealed at the end of the trailer – eating one of the slug shaped creatures will ‘keep the Time Fall away’.
3) The time reversing rain that we’ve seen in trailer’s 2 and 3 is known as Time Fall and causes rapid aging.
4) Kojima has talked about how death will not be the end of the game in Death Stranding. Instead, Sam awakens in an alternate death dimension. This is referenced directly by a voice over Sam’s radio in Trailer 4.
5) The invisible ‘things’ that killed the work crew in trailer 3 can be sensed by Sam but not seen, while his new female companion can see them it seems.
6) If Sam is eaten by one of the invisible creatures he will come back back to live but a giant crator will be created, just like we saw in trailer 3.

Now fans get to start piecing together … wait these pieces don’t seem to fit together at all. *sigh* well, we might be back at square one with this. Are the invisible creators (called ‘ludens’ by fans) the souls of former people? Is Sam’s name actually a combination of his job ‘porter’ as in “a person employed to carry luggage and other loads, especially in a railroad station, airport, or hotel.” and ‘bridges’, a company? Why do the little worm things keep the Time Fall away? Do they spawn clones of the carriers?

AAAAAHHH my mind is broken for now. Death Stranding still has no solid release date but it is coming eventually for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro.

E3 2018: Dante and Crew Are Back In Devil May Cry 5

Posted on June 13, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Get ready for cheesy one liners, fluid chain building combat and an over the top melodramatic story featuring angels, demons and other mythological creatures in Devil May Cry 5. Billed by Capcom as a true sequel to 2008’s Devil May Cry 4, DMC5 marks the first time Capcom has taken the series in-house after a decade hiatus.

The story of DMC5 picks up several years after the last entry – with a demonic invasion looming and the seeds of the Demon Tree starting to take root within Red Grave City, Dante’s younger ally Nero is drawn to investigate this new threat.  Without the power of his demonic arm, Nero must utilize a new mechanical prosthetic (which he can ride like a rocket) to dispatch the forces of hell. Can Nero find Dante in time to stop the oncoming invasion?

Devil May Cry 5 is powered by Capcom’s RE Engine which made it’s debut in last year’s Resident Evil 7. It’ll be directed by Hideki Itsuno and will be released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC in the Spring of 2019.

E3 2018:Co-Op FPS Earthfall Gets Brand New Trailer

Posted on June 12, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Grab three friends and get ready to save the earth in a brand new a co-op survival experience that honestly feels very reminiscent of Valve’s Left for Dead titles. Earthfall is a 4 player multiplayer FPS coming to Xbox and PS4 on console and is already available in Early Access on Steam.

Guns aren’t the only tools available for players to aid in their survival – weapons can be 3D printed in a really neat sci-fi looking fabrication process using the Genie Workbench 5 printer. Players can also craft both usable and automatic turrets, barricades and other tools of destruction.

Earthfall features campaign-like narratives that take place throughout it’s various stages. Each of the 4 playable characters have their own personalities, voice lines and interactions, I wonder how long it will take players to see them all?

Here’s the official description of Earthfall from its Steam Page:

“When the world ends, the fight begins! In co-op shooter Earthfall, gather your friends, load your weapons and grab your portable defenses and work together as a team to battle through swarms of ferocious aliens. Complete objectives, fortify and defend holdouts and use 3D printers to create more weapons, barricades and turrets to get the job done by slaughtering the alien scum through 10 epic levels full of brutal combat and rich lore.”

Players on PC shouldn’t really worry about taxing system specs, requiring only a GTX 750 and 8GB of RAM, even medium-spec systems should be able to run Earthfall just fine,

  • OS: Windows 7
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-4430
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 750 2GB
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Network: Broadband Internet connection
  • Storage: 20 GB available space
  • Additional Notes: SSD Recommended

Earthfall will launch out of Early Access onto all platforms on July 13th.

E3 2018: Kingdom Hearts III Gets Two Collector’s Editions and a Release Date

Posted on June 11, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

After a half a decade long wait we finally know when we will get to play the end of Sora’s story in Kingdom Hearts III – January 29th, 2019 on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Before the E3 press conferences, parties and festivities Square Enix announced the global release date during the Kingdom Hearts Orchestra World Tour Concert in Los Angeles.

Fans have speculated that Disney / Square might include a world based upon the 2012 hit film Forzen so that Sora, Riku and Mickey can sled their way thru Elsa’ frozen wonderland. During Microsoft’s E3 press conference yesterday these hoped were confirmed with a brand new trailer that basically recaps early plot points from Arendalle’s first tale.

Check it out here:

A brand new trailer, release date and world reveal weren’t the only exciting things to be revealed this week. Today Square Enix also confirmed that KHIII will also have two collector’s edition. One that includes a set of Sora, Donald and Goof Bring Arts figures and another includes a collectable pin and steel box.

First up is the Deluxe Edition:

  • Deluxe Edition – $79.99
    • Exclusive steelbook packaging
    • Mini art book with concept artwork by Tetsuya Nomura
    • Collectible KINGDOM HEARTS III pin.

Next up is the $199.99 USD Bring Arts + Deluxe Edition:

Deluxe Edition + Bring Arts Figures – The KINGDOM HEARTS III Deluxe Edition and Bring Arts Sora, Donald, and Goofy Set bundled separately will be available in limited quantities for $229.99. Fans can now preorder the Xbox One and PlayStation®4 system versions exclusively from the SQUARE ENIX Online Store.

Kingdom Hearts III was one of the first games I wrote about for BrokenJoysticks back in 2013 when it was revealed. Will KH III answer all of the lingering questions after 16 years of games? We’ll find out next January.

Ori: Willow of the Wisps Launches In 2019

Posted on June 11, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Indie platforming darling Ori and The Blind Forest is getting a sequel, subtitled Willow of the Wisps, and it will launch in 2019 as revealed at the Microsoft E3 press conference. We got just under two minutes of gameplay footage from Willow of the Wisps and what was shown was very impressive. Featuring a bright. colorful and whimsical style that stays true to the 2D art style of the original it looks like OATBF: WOW is going to be a platforming title that many will be talking about before it comes out.

The original Ori and the Blind Forest was developed by Moon Studios and took over 4 years to complete. It was released for Windows and Xbox One in 2015 and was met with critical acclaim. Check out the trailer for Willow of the Wisps below, although a word of warning for those with Arachnophobia that there is at least one spider featured in this gameplay footage.

E3 2018: Crackdown 3 Is Basically Terry Crews: The Video Game

Posted on June 11, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Crackdown 3 has been on the radar for a while now, originally revealed in 2014, it is not stranger to long periods of silence before new information comes to light. At their E3 press conference Microsoft showed off a brand new trailer featuring narration of none other than comedian Terry Crews.

Watch as Terry shows us how you can scale buildings, collect those ever present orbs, become more powerful and even summon a mother $#*@ing tank out of thin air!

Despite a long development cycle spanning nearly 5 years, Crackdown 3 will release in February 2018 for Windows PC and Xbox One.

The Crackdown series has been a staple on the Xbox line of consoles for over a decade now, the original Crackdown released all the way back in Feb 2007 and at the time promised players a chance to take part in the then upcoming Halo 3 beta. Crackdown 2 had a whole “zombies but not zombies” horde thing going on and was a bit of a departure from the first.

Perhaps the injection of Terry Crew’s humor is just what this long in-development game needs to stay fresh.

E3 2018: First Gameplay Demo of Battlefield V Shown

Posted on June 11, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

EA kicked things off yesterday afternoon with the first gameplay demo of the upcoming Battlefield V. We already knew that BFV wold set during World War II and will feature playable female soldiers both in the campaign mode and online. While no gameplay of the rumored Battle Royale mode was shown during the conference, nor were concrete details divulged, developers from DICE did confirm that BFV will ship with a Battle Royale mode when the game arrives this fall.

DICE’s Frostbite Engine once again provides the near photo-realistic graphics and physics for Battlefield V. Improvements made to the engine for this year’s title include the ability to vault your soldier through pane of glass and now larger vehicles like tanks can also destroy entire buildings – which admittedly does look really freaking cool.

The Battlefield franchise has never really been my shooter of choice, I much prefer arcadey and up-close titles like Quake and older Call of Duty titles but for those looking for large scale, 64 player mayhem, BFV should have them covered. It will be released on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. An Origin Access Trial Version is set to be released on October 11th, one week before BFV’s general release on October 19th.

E3 2018: Shadow of the Tomb Raider Gets First Gameplay Trailer and Screenshots

Posted on June 11, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Square Enix revealed the first in-engine gameplay trailer for the upcoming third entry in the Tomb Raider reboot franchise, Shadow of the Tomb Raider. This 3 minute long cut of sequences seems to be taken from the same “first hour” demo that I got to play at the Shadow of the Tomb Raider reveal event back in April.

Demo stations featuring a slice of Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be playable at both Square Enix’s E3 booth and Microsoft’s Xbox Experience Theatre. E3 is also the first place that the public will get a look at SOTR running on PC hardware.

Here’s Square Enix’s official description of the demo that’s available on the show floor:

E3 attendees will have the opportunity to experience Shadow of the Tomb Raider firsthand with playable demos at the Square Enix booth and the Xbox Experience at the Microsoft Theater. Meanwhile, the NVIDIA booth will host a behind closed doors, first time playable demo of Shadow of the Tomb Raider on PC.

In the demo I got to play a massive tidal wave destroys an entire city during the climax. Here is how I described it back in April:

“This is where things went from standard action movie fare – as seen in the previous two titles – to nearly world shattering. A ginormous tidal wave quickly engulfs the cavernous tomb and sweeps Lara out and onto the city streets. What follows is an almost indescribable amount of devastation as the large wave carries Lara, innocent pedestrians, cars and anything not firmly cemented into a foundation along with it.”

Alongside the gameplay trailer Square Enix also released several brand new screenshots, which you can check out below:

Command and Conquer Returns As a Mobile Mini-RTS

Posted on June 9, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

During the EA Play Pre-E3 press conference a former RTS mainstay made its return in the form of Command & Conquer: Rivals – A presumably Free to Play title similar to Clash of Clans and other action hybrid titles.

Longtime staples of the genre like resource collection and unit production are still present in this scaled down, e-sports focus take on Real time Strategy. Two players square off against each other on a small map to claim a central point and launch a pair of nukes at their opponents to claim victory. Several iconic units from C&C history did make an appearance in Rivals brief appearance on EA’s stage – groups of marines, the mammoth tank, tiberium harvesters and flamethrower units were all accounted for.

No word on how Command & Conquer: Rivals will be monetized and the game is still in pre-alpha. North American Google Android users can head on over to the Play Store and pre-register for access to the pre-alpha release. An iOS release is set to follow sometime later this summer.

EA’s last attempt at reviving the long dormant Command & Conquer franchise happened half a decade ago, all the way back in 2013. Originally announced as “C&C: Generals 2”, 2013’s cancelled entry was focused entirely on multiplayer and was cancelled soon after a closed alpha test concluded.

Major Quake Champions Patch Makes Fundamental Changes To Loot System, Adds Bots

Posted on June 8, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Sabre Interactive and Bethesda released a brand new patch for Quake Champions yesterday that adds many features that the community have been asking for since the Open Beta last summer. Bots, further Champion adjustments and a fundamental redesign of how the tribolt weapon works. Despite all of the positive additions the one thing that’s been widely panned by the QC community is how skins are crafted and what “shards” can be spent on.

Positive: Bots Now Exist But Not Like You Think

Veterans of previous Quake games have always had offline bots as a fallback option for when a stable internet connection isn’t available or to spend countless hours practicing against in order to hone those twitchy fragging reflexes. QC’s developers have spent a lot of time working on the fundamentals of QC and while bots have always topped the list of requested features, only now nearly 12 months after the Open Beta are we seeing playable progress on them.

For those hoping for offline bots to practice against will be disappointed that not only is Quake Champions still not playable without a connection to the central server but the first stage of QC bots cannot be used in custom games or parties.

On the positive side, Quake Champion’s bots are pretty challenging. You can face off against one of them in the brand-new tutorial. Bots wil also be used fillout the roster of games where another player disconnected or there isn’t a high enough population to fill out a team roster. Bethesda has promised that adding bots to Custom Games with selectable difficulty levels will come in a future patch.

Here’s Bethesda’s official description of bots:

BOTS GALORE – Want to hone your skill? Did some quitter bail from a game mid-match, leaving your TDM crew a bit short? Well, now Bots are here to save you. That’s right, the same kind of AI that will soon reach singularity and grow into our apocalyptic overlords now powers (optional) enemies in-game! Featuring a scalable skill level to help players practice and improve in training mode, Bots will also automagically fill slots in live games where needed. This small, first phase of the impending robo-pocalypse – in Quake form – supports Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Instagib modes. More exciting updates on our road to Matrix-style Armageddon are scheduled to come soon!

Positive: Champion Stats Are Now Aligned

Individual champion statistics are no more! Instead all of the available characters are divided into Light, Medium and Heavy and the heroes within these categories will share the same armor, health and speed statistics.

Here’s the rundown:

Balance Changes: In addition to the more on-the-surface improvements, Quake Champions is receiving some under-the-hood tweaks to improve the overall balance of the game. These changes include alterations to movement speed, health and armor stacks for Light, Medium and Heavy Champions as well as changes to certain weapon statistics and specific Champions abilities.

Negative: Skins Can No Longer Be Crafted, Shards Are Only Usable For Loot boxes

Oh dear… so this change is not “controversial”, it’s downright removing player’s ability to choose what kind of rewards that they want to work towards. Prior to yesterday’s update duplicates found within Backpacks or Chests (loot boxes) would reward players with “shards”. Saving up between 300 – 600 shards players could purchase pieces of a given skin set. While very grindy and still reliant on RNG loot boxes – which are predatory – did provide players with some agency on the type of things they could unlock through play.

Under the newer system duplicates no longer provide shards at all and individual pieces cannot be crafted at all as well. Want that really cool Scalebearer skin or want to relive Quake III with the classic machinegun skin? Better hope it drops from a chest which you can only get with real money or by leveling up after a couple of hours. It’s all RNG.

Are you enjoying this latest Quake Champions patch? I’d love to hear thoughts on this latest update to Bethesda’s soon to be free-to-play online shooter in the comments.

FFXIV’s Hard Core Raiding Community Spent The First 12 Hours Doing ‘The Weapon’s Refrain’ Wrong

Posted on June 6, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

With the release of FFXIV Patch 4.31 two days ago, the newest entry in the on-going series of Ultimate difficulty encounters – The Minstrels Ballad: The Weapon’s Refrain – has been unleashed upon the denizens of Eorzea.

As soon as the servers went live in the early morning hours several well-known raiding groups like Elysium, YouTuber Mister Happy Gaming and XenoSysVex were ready to see just what Yoshi-P& Co were going to throw at them. Alongside these skilled raiders are thousands of viewers (over 9, 810 as of the time of writing) ready to watch and interact as Streamers attempt to figure out just how The Weapons Refrain works.

The Ministral’s Ballad: The Weapon’s Refrain is a dramatic retelling of The Warrior of Light’s encounter with the Ultima Weapon way back in A Realm Reborn. Featuring brand new mechanics and edge of your seat encounters with the 3 original Primal (Garuda, Titan and Ifrit) from ARR, this is an encounter of epic proportions. Challenging an Ultimate level encounter is no joke – FFXIV offers encounters at a number of different skill levels: Story (regular), Extreme (harder content but still PUGable), Savage (Even harder group content that can require weeks of coordination) and for the most diehard – Ultimate.

Above: The Weapon’s Refrain streams are currently the most popular FFXIV content out there.

Initially the community thought that the first 3 phases of the fight were a joke as raiding groups blew through the 3 Primal with relative ease over the first few hours of their streams. Some called the encounter too easy as these Warriors of Light pushed on for upwards of 16 hours yesterday but there was a massive problem once the first group hit phase 4, the Ultima Weapon itself.

Upon entering Phase 4 of the fight (which may not even be the last phase, we don’t know as no one has gotten past it yet) entire parties received a Doom buff that could not be cleansed (removed) – killing the entire party. It turns out that if a party does not do the mechanics in phases 1 thru 3 in a certain order to “awaken” the 3-original primal (and make these phases much more difficult in the process) they inevitably hit an unwinnable state come Phase 4.

After 12 hours of what seemed like steady progress that frontier of the Final Fantasy 14 raiding community had all of their gains wiped out by a single doom cast. Major groups had to go back to Garuda (phase 1) and figure out just how to cause her to “awaken” before moving on to Ifrit and finally Titan.  Right now it seems like the current theory is to gain a special buff from each of the 3 primal in order to cleanse the doom in phase 4 and survive incoming attacks using three consecutive Limit Break 3s. All of this, is of course, hypothetical because noone has lived long enough through Phase 4 to verify that this is the intended solution.

Watching chat commenters, community personalities like Mr.Happy and even on-going analysis between groups streaming the encounter individually to figure out the solution to The Weapon’s Refrain’s mystery is actually really captivating. My spouse and I spent several hours last night watching it all unfold live and who knows how long it will take before a World’s First is claimed.

Above: The Unending Coil of Bahamut

Last Fall in Patch 4.11 Square Enix released the first Ultimate level encounter, The Ultimate Coil of Bahmut, which tasks players with slaying the Elder Primal yet again. Groups worked on the UCOB encounter for 12 days before Dysnomia from Japan was able to claim the World’s First UCOB kill.

Bethesda Announces Fallout 76, May Be A Online Survival Game

Posted on May 30, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Bethesda had been running a mysterious and unannounced Twitch stream yesterday that was literally just a Fallout bobblehead standing upright in front of a camera and occasionally a “Please Stand By” title card.  Not exactly something that was going to set the world on fire, and it can be easy to see why the hype and announcement of Pokemon Lets Go: Eevee & Pikachu overshadowed anything Bethesda was doing it.

It turns out all of this was to build up hype to the announcement of Fallout 76, a game officially know nothing about and whose press release simply confirms that it exists and will be released on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 – alongside an official logo.

Unofficial sources told Kotaku that the game is an online survival RPG in the vein of Rust or ARK or 7 Days to Die. That means it will allow multiple players to connect via a central server to build fortresses, gather resources and well.. Survive. What we don’t know about Fallout 76 is whether or not the game will support offline play or player run servers (as both 7 Days to Die and ARK do).

More details are expected at Bethesda’s E3 showcase in two weeks time.
