Arkham Knight PC Improvements Continue Months After Release

Posted on December 19, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Warner Bros Interactive has issued a brand new patch for the Windows PC for Batman: Arkham Knight. This new patch restores the advanced rain & weather effects that were present in the PlayStation 4 version of the game but struggled to run on some PC configurations. Another important update is the improvement of target prioritization – I can’t tell you how many times I had Batman just rolling around, having difficulty deciding his next target.

Arkham Knight had a very rocky launch on PC this past June which included the suspension of sales of the game for several months while RockSteady and Warner Bros Interactive worked out all of the Kinks. Although the game does not have SLI / Cross-Fire support there have been a number of improvements made in the past few months (We also found that AMD Crimson drivers also helped performance somewhat.)

We reviewed the PC version of Batman: Arkham Knight this past August and found the game to be quite enjoyable.

Here are the full patch notes via Steam’s announcements section:

  • Fixed some issues with stars being awarded or lost incorrectly in specific AR Challenges
  • Improved target prioritization during combat
  • Restored heavier rain during the opening section of the game
  • Fixed missing rain effects on a few remaining player character skins
  • Miscellaneous gameplay fixes and stability improvements
  • Fixes to some keyboard and mouse prompts after being rebound
  • Made frame times more consistent for 60hz monitors running at 30fps with VSync enabled
  • Previously equipped gadgets can be selected with keyboard and mouse again after restarting an AR Challenge
  • Fixed the default key binding for Harley’s Snare gadget
  • Batgirl’s Remote Hacking Device can now be properly selected with keyboard & mouse in AR Challenges
  • Minor performance optimizations for certain combinations of hardware
  • Fixed keyboard & mouse controls that did not function in DLC AR Challenges when no previous save data existed
  • Quick Photo Mode can now be triggered with keyboard and mouse controls when using the Batmobile
  • Special Combo Takedowns can now be performed with Quickfire Gadget binds if they were rebound
  • Fixed graphical corruption that may occur after Alt-Tabbing
  • Improvements and corrections to some localized text
  • Added new Classic Harley Quinn skin for use in AR Challenges & the Harley Quinn Story Pack
  • Added Arkham Knight as a playable character for AR Challenges & the Red Hood Story Pack
  • Added support for December DLC content

Cyberpunk 2077 To Go Silent As Witcher III Becomes The Focus For The Next Year

Posted on December 9, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Last week we brought you some news via a translated interview that CD Projekt’s ambitious role-playing game Cyberpunk 2077  was going to be even more ambitious than this year’s The Witcher III.  The game is in the news once again thanks to an interview the CEO of the CD Projekt RED gave to the Polish show Money.

It is not a surprise to anyone that The Witcher III has been an absolute success for the company – reaching sales of over 6 million units since the game’s launch this past May. It is so successful that the company’s CEO says that CD Projekt RED will focus on The Witcher brand for the next year.

Regarding their plans for The Witcher III Adam Kicinski said:

“This and the next year will be devoted to The Witcher. Apart from the second expansion we have some additional ideas. They should help us animate sales in 2016. The game is selling so well, that we are convinced there are still many people who will buy it if we promote it further.”

So where does this leave the ambitious Cyberpunk 2077, which the public hasn’t seen – aside from the off executive or producer quote – since the game’s initial reveal trailer?  In terms of marketing material and official demos we won’t be seeing things for quite some time. No doubt CD Projeckt RED has an entire internal team working hard on the game but it looks like they will be going radio silent until the game’s marketing machine is ready to rev-up to full speed.

Here’s exactly what Mr.Kicinski said about the company’s plans for Cyberpunk:

“We already have the release date for Cyberpunk 2077 planned, but we won’t announce it until we are ready to start the marketing campaign. At the moment we’re concentrating on The Witcher and don’t want to distract users from that product, which we are still monetizing.”

Cyberpunk 2077 was originally revealed back in January 2013 – in fact we covered the game’s initial reveal trailer over two years ago. The game will allow players to customize their own avatar for use in game and will have a heavy emphasis on non-linear choice driven story.

Undertale | Review

Posted on December 1, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

Review By: Andrea Ritsu

This is a review of Undertale that is 100% spoiler free. Reasons why are given in the review but I want you all to understand that this is a very difficult game to review because of this very reason. Almost any detail, even from the game’s own store page, can harm your first experience should you learn it. Knowing this, if you wish to not even risk reading this carefully written review then just know that my verdict is as follows; buy Undertale and play it as soon as possible.Read More

Blizzards Tells Us Which Overwatch Heroes Had Highest Win Rate!

Posted on November 29, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

It appears that last weekend’s Overwatch Stress Test Weekend was quick the success as Blizzard has revealed some statistics from the recent test on their twitter account. Between all of the players invited for the stress test weekend over 350,000 matches were played with an average match length of 8 minutes and 8 seconds.

If you’re wondering which heroes had the highest win rate among the 21 currently available:

Assault: Soldier 76
Tank: D.va
Defense: Torbjörn
Support: Symmetra

I’m not surprised to see Torbjörn at the top of the defense bracket – with his ability to build & maintain turrets on top of his Armor Pack ability allowing him to drop armor for teammates, I saw quite a bit during my playtime with the game. Soldier 76 leading the pack in terms of assault is  the opposite of my experience – I found his quick healing field and sprint to be useful but his low health pool to be quite the drawback. Lastly the fact that D.va won the most matches with her (literal) nuclear ulti is a sign that maybe they need to NERF THIS! D.va was actually my favorite hero during last weekend’s stress test.

Which hero do you enjoy the most? Did any of these statistics surprise you?

New Fallout 4 Dynamic Shadows Mods Greatly Improves Average FPS

Posted on November 21, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Are you still wandering through the wastes of Boston weeks after release? Are you playing the Windows PC version on mid-range hardware? If you answered yes to both questions, then I might have the right mod for you! Don’t worry Vault-tech isn’t involved in any way!

“FPS dynamic shadows mod by creator Shadow Beast adds the ability for the game engine to dynamically shadow draw distance and level of detail based upon your desired frame rate. The mods creator offers the following description of it:

Many of you may have noticed that in some locations of Fallout 4 fps gets low even with a good hardware, like in the City, mostly it happens in theareas with lots of objects. Since the game isn’t properly optimized, almost everything that it does with objects which it renders takes more time thanit actually should. One of the most time consuming operations in Fallout 4 is shadow rendering and because the game has only predefined shadow drawdistance, which applies everywhere in every location just the same, we have a choise either we set it to high value with having a good picture but eventually facing fps drops in locations with lots of object or we lower the value to make fps more stable in general. And this is exactly the pointwhere this plugin comes handy!

With this mod installed I saw my frame rate increase in diamond city from 35 FPS on average to a respectable 55. Outdoor areas like the commons faired even better never dipping below my target of 60 frames per second even during intense battles. Before installing the mod I was ranging between 40 – 50 during intense firefights with super mutants. I don’t know all the technical ins and outs of this mod but it seems to work wonders.

If you’re wondering what kind of rig and graphical settings I am running to achieve these results – I’ve got everything except Godrays set to ultra with maximum draw distance enabled. My system specs just meet those recommended by Bethesda with probably my graphics card being the weakest component.

My system:

4.0 GHZ 8-Core AMD Processor
16GB DDR3
Radeon R7 270 2GB Overclocked
Fallout 4 installed on a mechanical hard drive

Installation of the dynamic shadows mod is really easy as well. If you’ve installed mods for Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas you might be familiar with having to use tools like the nexus mods manager or even the built-in plugin loader to ensure everything worked without a hitch. To install the dynamic shadows mod you just drag the files into your games directory and you’re good to go!

Users on Reddit are reporting similar findings to mine in terms of performance on cards as high as the Geforce 970. Interesting posters on the Reddit thread are also comparing the capability of this mod to 2011’s RAGE which featured a dynamic graphics performance system designed to optimize the user’s experience on lower end hardware.

We’ll keep you posted on any other interesting Fallout 4 mods as they continue to emerge.

I’m Ten Hours Into Fallout 4 And I think I’m Starting To Glow

Posted on November 11, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

The desolate wastes have been calling out to me ever since the anticipated reveal of Fallout 4 this past E3. Like the game’s main character, I too hid underground although figuratively speaking. For the past few months I ignored any small gameplay snippets, cell-phone videos and plot details that leaked out of Bethesda ahead of the game’s release. With the large steel doors of Vault 111 finally open as of yesterday I’ve finally got the chance to spend nearly ten hours in the Boston wasteland. Here’s a brief journey of my character’s journey from the relative safety of Vault 111 to the streets of Diamond City.Read More

5 Vs 5 Arena Mode Coming To Heroes Of The Storm

Posted on November 6, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Heroes of the Storm, Blizzard’s popular Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, will be receiving a 5 Vs 5 arena mode where the devs say anything can happen. This mode does not allow players to chose their heroes – instead your entire team is selected at random. Also there seems to be no real focus on objectives, instead this will be about player skill and pure combat.

Check out the new trailer for Arena Mode below – we will bring you more as it becomes available.

OverWatch for Consoles Confirmed By Blizzard Ahead of BlizzCon 2015

Posted on November 6, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Blizzard’s surprise reveal from BlizzCon 2014 turned recent internet sensation, OverWatch, will be heading to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One alongside the Windows PC version Blizzard announced today.

It seems that several retailers – namely GameStop USA – put out store displays for OverWatch: Origin Edition ahead of tomorrow’s BlizzCon 2015 opening ceremonies.  The Origin Edition of the still in closed beta First Person Shooter will include a number of goodies and will be priced at $60 USD – although reports of at least one redditor scoring the Origin Edition for $40 USD have surfaced.

Here’s what is included in the retail version of OverWatch according to a now delete Battle.net page:

21 Heroes
5 skins:
Blackwatch Reyes (Reaper)
Strike-Commander Morrison (Soldier: 76)
Overgrown Bastion
Security Chief Pharah
Slipstream Tracer

Overwatch-themed content for several Blizzard Entertainment games:
Heroes of the Storm™ – Tracer Hero
World of Warcraft® – Baby Winston Pet
StarCraft® II Portraits
Hearthstone® Cardback
Diablo® III – Mercy Wing

As of press-time OverWatch is not listed on any major retail website checked by us – including GameStop USA, Amazon.com, Amazon.ca or BestBuy.com. Presumably all of the individuals that have reported pre-ordering OverWatch before the reveal have done so physically in-store.

We also don’t know anything the monetization strategy for OverWatch. Whether it will be a purely buy-to-play title with optional micro-transactions, similar to Counter Strike: Global Offensive or free-to-play similar to Blizzard’s own Heroes of the Storm.

Blizzard has also released the official pack shot for all 3 retail versions of Overwatch: Origins Edition:

Final Fantasy XIV Devs Preview Thordin Upcoming Extreme Encounter

Posted on November 3, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Final Fantasy XIV patch 3.1 – the first major content drop since this past June’s release of Heavensward  – arrives in just a week’s time and the devs have given us a small glimpse at the brand new extreme version of Thordan’s Reign.

Spoiler warning for the end of FFXIV: Heavensward follow

As players who have finished the main story question know the game ends with a pretty epic encounter between the Warrior of Light, King Thordin – now in his primal form – and the Knights of the Round.  Based upon this epic final encounter Eorzya’s Minstrel Bard has constructed an even more fantastical tale of survival with the extreme version.  This 8 player encounter will require you to have at least ilevel 190 – so make sure you have all of your drops of Alexander collected or gear from the Tomes of Essoterics before taking on Thordin EX.

Still no details on what Thordan’s Reign Extreme will drop… perhaps an ilevel 210 weapon? We’ll find out once FFXIV 3.1 drops on November 10th. Until then check out some screenshots from the encounter that Square Enix released.

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 3.1 Release Date, Producer Q&A and Trailer

Posted on October 27, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Square Enix’s first huge update for Final Fantasy XIV: Heavansward, patch 3.1, arrives on November 10th the publisher has announced. Alongside the announcement of the release date Square also provided a Q & A during the most recent Letter From The Producer Live and a very informative 7 minute trailer giving players a rundown of everything that will be included in 3.1!

Patch 3.1 As Goes Light So Goes Darkness brings with it a lot of brand new content. The story threads left hanging after the completion of FFXIV: Heavansward will be continued in the new main story quests,  New exploratory missions for free-companies (guilds) will be available, the first of which is known as The Diadem.  One brand new dungeon will be added for level 60 players as well – Saint Mociane’s Arboretum.   Possibly one of the most exciting additions, which we detailed previously when it was unveiled is the new 24 man raid known as the Void Ark.

Make sure you check out the trailer I’ve included in the embedded player before the jump. I’ve also included some of the details from the official Q&A thread from the Letters From The Producer Live that I thought would be of interest for returning players. I know that I’ll be re-subbing for the new raid content, and hey new story quests are always welcomed 😀

If November 10th sounds familiar – it is also the same day that Fallout 4 and StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void are released. It’s going to be a big day for games!

Hands-On With The Star Wars Battlefront Beta

Posted on October 10, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Our staff played a combined 10 hours of the Star Wars Battlefront beta on Windows PC this weekend and are ready to share their field reports. It should be noted that these are early impressions based upon a beta build of an un-released game and as such the final game may address some of the issues we are about to discuss.

Fionna Fox’s Impressions

IT happened at 11:35 on the second day of the beta, with a slight almost cash register type of sound I bought the last item available for unlock in the beta. I had done it! I had beaten the Star Wars Battlefront beta. But I wanted to keep playing -that’s how good it is, I kept going without any incentives, any unlocks, or even the promise of in game rewards.

Let’s start with the basics, the game is beautiful, on the highest graphics settings it looks like a brand new hi-end game (not really surprising here since it hasn’t seen a retail release yet). I’m playing on a 1080p monitor at 1920×1080 resolution and I still get awed when I take a look at the vista of Hoth. The Sound design is AMAZING, it sounds like you are in a star wars movie.  Without even having ever gotten to game play the game already feels FANTASTIC, it has the shiny look of a modern game, with a Star Wars skin on top. That alone will be enough for lots of players, but it manages to back it up with gameplay as well.
