Circle to open Kingdom’s Item Shop in 3DS eShop on August 18th

Posted on August 13, 2016 by Jason Nason

Circle Entertainment is bringing Kingdom’s Item Shop to North America next week. Kingdom’s Item Shop, developed and released by PUMO in Japan in 2014, is a game that simulate running an item shop in a Fantasy Role-Playing Game Universe.

In the game you are the new owner of an item shop. Your goal is to run your property and make it the most popular item shop of the Kingdom. To become a popular owner, you’ll need to explore dungeons for ingredients, find new composition recipes, compose items, and sell items to whom in need.

The game seems like an interesting concept, especially if you’d much rather take on a less adventurous role in the world of fantasy RPGs. I mean, what does that shop owner in that village I keep coming back to for potions do all day while I’m out saving the world?

Puzzle Labyrinth | Review

Posted on June 29, 2016 by Jason Nason

Puzzle Labyrinth is a very bare bones puzzle game.

There isn’t anything flashy in the Nintendo 3DS eShop game. Like sitting down to do a crossword or a Sudoku puzzle, this game feels the same way. Each puzzle is independent of the rest in the book and can really be done in any order. There is no connecting story to bridge the puzzles together and no character narrative to bring you from one to the next. It’s just puzzles, but set up with deductive logic and set in a three dimensional environment.

Puzzle Labyrinth has sixty stages to play through, with twenty unlocked at the start of the game. Well, they’re not entirely unlocked. Actually they’re all locked. Let me explain. When the game starts you are given five keys to unlock puzzles, and you get to choose from the first twenty available. You can choose any ones you’d like, though of course starting with the first few make the most sense as these will introduce you to the different puzzle elements.

The goal in each puzzle is to escape, plain and simple. When you start a level the door will lock behind you and you can only escape once you fulfill a requirement laid out for you on the plaque on the wall. You’ll need to explore each labyrinth and literally read the writing on the walls to figure it out. And even this can be kind of difficult to do.

To make the level more challenging the text written on the walls is cryptic. You’ll have to not only figure out what to do, but also what the clues really mean. While some of them can be fairly straight forward, others may only give you a series of numbers or a bit of poetry. Some levels can really leave you scratching your head.

But that can be good. No one likes a puzzle that is too easy to solve. Where’s the fun in that.

Moving around in the labyrinth is done with the directional pad, with the circle pad used to select from items you’ve found in order to use them. And like the classic point and click adventure games, you can press the (A) button at any time to check or interact with your surroundings. Also in many of the levels are monsters, however the goal of the level isn’t always to fight them. They may also ask you for favours where the correct course of action might be to flee or give them an object you’ve found.

After you complete a set number of puzzles another twenty will unlock until the full sixty are available. Each completed level will also grant you a key, thus allowing you to challenge even more labyrinths.

The music in the game is catchy and reminds me a lot of Parascientific Escape: Cruise in the Distant Sea. The 3D visuals in the game are also very well done, as are the monster designs and animations.

Overall Puzzle Labyrinth is a fun little puzzle game, however really challenging at times. If you’re looking to be stumped and have a love-hate time as you try to figure it out this is definitely worth checking out.

Conveni Dream | Review

Posted on June 15, 2016 by Jason Nason

I worked in retail for a long time. I have over a decade under my belt of dealing with crazed customers, wacky coworkers, and the ins and outs of retail life. Circle’s latest game Conveni Dream takes the retail experience and shrinks it down in a portable form.

Conveni Dream is a very basic retail simulation game where you take the reins of a convenience store. It is up to you to hire staff and manage the store.

Ambitions of the Slimes coming West from Circle

Posted on June 9, 2016 by Jason Nason

With Puzzle Labyrinth set to be released today, Circle’s next game is already on the way.

Circle Entertainment announced via their social media platforms that Ambitions of the Slimes is already on the way to North America and Europe. The game will come packed with English, Japanese, Chinese Simplified and Chinese Tradtional.

Ambitions of the Slimes is a strategy role-playing game which will be released on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. This new release could become very close to a simultaneous East-West release. The game is set for release in Japan on June 15th and Circle is hoping for the game to be released here at the end of June or early July.

The game is also developed by Altairworks and Flyhigh Works.

In the game you play as both humans and slimes, which can take over and possess humans in battle. The game looks very much like a Final Fantasy Tactics style game, with characters reminiscent of the Witch and Hero series.

Circle put out word on their social media accounts yesterday to gauge interest in a new game they are considering publishing. The game in question is a resource and simulation game where you collect materials and develop your little town into a bigger one.

The game follows some of the staples of the genre, from collecting wood and stones in order to build buildings and other items, though without the attacking of other camps like in Warcraft. The game was released by Arc System Works in December.

Witch & Hero II | Review

Posted on March 28, 2016 by Jason Nason

The original Witch & Hero was the second game I reviewed a few years back and I loved it. The game was the model of simplicity, both in approach and gameplay. Born from the look of the old school 8-bit era of games, Witch & Hero looked and felt like a game that could have been around when I was a kid.

Witch & Hero II takes everything that the original did so well and builds on it. Everything from the original game is intact, but the sequel has more meat.

The game takes place years after the events of the first game where a new Demon Lord comes to terrorize the world, with the Witch and Hero setting out to defeat him. Unfortunately they are defeated. Once news has spread of the defeat, two new heros emerge to fight the Demon Lord. These are who you will play as in the game.

Parascientific Escape: Cruise in the Distant Seas | Review

Posted on March 16, 2016 by Jason Nason

Parascientific Escape: Cruise in the Distant Seas is a visual novel with exploration and puzzle solving elements.

The game follows Hitomi Akeneno, a 16 year old high school student with a little secret – she has not one, but two psychic powers. After receiving an invitation, she boards a luxury cruise ship with her friend, Chisono Shio. As soon as she enters a suite room, a loud explosion sounds … and she finds herself stuck, unable to get out. Is this an accident? Or something far more sinister? The only way to find out is to escape, with the help of her powers.

This game reminds me a lot of the Ace Atorney games, with a lot of the conversation as well as textploration of environments.
