Cliff Bleszinski talks State of the Industry

Posted on February 26, 2013 by Jason Bassett

According to Cliff Bleszinski, it seems as though the time is not right to be a console developer. That’s what Bleszinki recently said during an interview with GameIndustry.biz. In his interview Bleszinski states that:

“This business has not been in a state of transition like it is right now since the video game crash of the ’80s”. He goes on to say: “”I really think we’re in a massive state of turmoil. I think Nintendo could possibly be faced with the situation of becoming a company that only makes software moving forward. I think Sony and Microsoft are about to come to major blows. But at the same time, people love playing games on their iPad. The PC is going through a wonderful renaissance right now. I think we’re ready to do digital download games all the time…I just want to see what happens. In regards to the industry, it’s like the Super Smash Bros. of business right now, and I want to see if Peach or Mario wins.”Read More

GTA V Delayed until September

Posted on January 31, 2013 by Jason Nason

Rockstar Games put up a small announcement on their website this morning to share with their fans that upcoming game Grand Theft Auto V, which is their hugely anticipated title, will not be released in the spring as they had originally announced. The game will be pushed back four months and will not hit store shelves on September 17th, 2013.

“We know this is about four months later than originally planned and we know that this short delay will come as a disappointment to many of you,” the letter wrote. “GTAV is a massively ambitious and complex game and it simply needs a little more polish to be of the standard we and, more importantly, you require.”Read More

Army Of Two: Devil’s Cartel Trailer

Posted on January 16, 2013 by Broken Joysticks

When the first game came out, I was really impressed with what EA Montreal did with the series. Their second entry added a morality feature which made you wonder how good or evil your thoughts were playing with Salem and Rios. Army of Two: Devil’s Cartel however is being co-developed by EA Montreal and Visceral Games of Dead Space fame. EA released today a new trailer for the game, as we had no updates on the game in a while. Read More

We’ve been hearing about the next generation of consoles for years now, from leaked development kits to vague statements from executives we’ve got everything but an official confirmation. This may all change according to Game Informer, whose source claims that the next machines from Microsoft and Sony may be officially announced as early as this coming March. Borderlands 2 Gets Massive Patch on Xbox 360

Posted on December 13, 2012 by Rae Michelle Richards

Gearbox Software has issued a pretty massive patch for the Xbox 360 version of Borderlands 2. Back when the game launched this past September users reported resets in regards to their badass ranking. Surely, this must have been enraging.

In a surprising twist Gearbox not only fixed the issue but also added the ability for players to reset all challenges once they have completed at least 85% of them.  You will not be able to earn any additional tokens from this but it can help bolster your rank. Tossed in as a thank you for waiting is also ten golden keys!

Check out the brief patch description below:

Players can now reset all challenge progress for a character once they’ve completed 85% of all non-DLC, non-area-specific challenge levels. This will keep the player’s current challenge bonuses and rank, but reset all challenge progress to 0 and allow challenges to be re-completed for additional ranks and bonuses. This option will appear as a tooltip at the bottom of the “challenges” screen within the status menu if the player has met the criteria.

In March of 2001, Konami unleashed a new type of game on the world with Zone of the Enders. It was a completely different take on the Mech action genre and hailed as one of the very best the industry had seen. Huge Black Friday Weekend For Xbox 360

Posted on November 28, 2012 by Les Major

Microsoft announced that over the Black Friday weekend (November 18th to 23rd) they sold 750,000 consoles in the United States alone. I have to admit, I even know some folks that took advantage of the new bundles and wonderful deals available for the Xbox.

Also noted was that Halo 4 sales exceeded expectations. It seemed quite a few retailers were offering gift cards along with the latest adventure in the Halo franchise. Sounds like the new trilogy is off to a great start both in reviews and sales!

Lastly Microsoft reported that on Sunday alone more than 14 million people logged into Xbox Live across the world. Once the newcomer to the console industry, Xbox has come a long way.

Ubisoft Were The Big Winners of Amazon’s Black Friday Weekend

Posted on November 26, 2012 by Broken Joysticks

With Black Friday sales currently being tallied up at the writing of this article, one fact has been confirmed, Ubisoft have been successful this past weekend on arguably the best online store on the Internet. According to data from Cowen & Company, the French video game company pulled away with massive sales this Black Friday weekend, with Just Dance and Assassin’s Creed III in the top 20. On record, the Just Dance franchise have always had a title at the top of the most sold game on Black Friday weekend, and this happenstance is no different.

December might just be 31 days, but it accounts to a quarter of annual video game software sales in the U.S., which are undoubtedly vital for publishers to factor in when capitalizing in on the days after Thanksgiving.

Other factors worth noting is ten Xbox 360 games made the top 20 list, the oldest game on the list is technically Gran Turismo 5 (XL Edition) as it was reduced to ten dollars for the weekend, and even the previous iteration of Just Dance for the Wii even squeezed onto the list.  This list of top sellers from Amazon.com are listed below.

Estimated top-selling video games on Amazon.com, as of November 23-25:

  • Just Dance 4 (Wii)
  • Assassin’s Creed III (Xbox 360)
  • Halo 4 (Xbox 360)
  • Assassin’s Creed III (PS3)
  • Dishonored (Xbox 360)
  • Madden NFL 13 (Xbox 360)
  • FIFA Soccer 13 (PS3)
  • FIFA Soccer 13 (Xbox 360)
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (Xbox 360)
  • Just Dance 4 (Xbox 360)
  • Madden NFL 13 (PS3)
  • Borderlands 2 (Xbox 360)
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (PS3)
  • Dishonored (PS3)
  • Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)
  • Dance Central 3 (Xbox 360)
  • Skylanders Giants (Wii)
  • God of War Saga (PS3)

Phil Harrison speaks; Declares new competition

Posted on November 21, 2012 by Broken Joysticks

In recent memory, Microsoft Games Studios has made great strides in acting as a focused competitor to Sony and Nintendo. However, in a recent statement by Microsoft’s Vice President of the Interactive Entertainment Business and always surprising Phil Harrison, there is sure to be more challenges awaiting for them just around the corner.

Harrison spoke at the London Games Conference, where he had plenty to say from broadening the studio’s horizons to revealing who their new competitors are.

Improved ESPN & New Karaoke App for Xbox Live Announced

Posted on November 19, 2012 by Broken Joysticks

As someone who uses the ESPN App to peruse the high caliber programming that ESPN has to offer, like re-airings of CFL games or the Scripps National Spelling Bee prelims, it’s nice to know that Major Nelson has announced the big update for the app. The brand-new ESPN App is no longer an over-glorified version of ESPN 3 (where sports are often ignored) and is an absolute collaboration of all things that make up ESPN thanks to the culmination of WatchESPN. Now this app will allow every ESPN channel and its programming available to Xbox Live Gold users, including all their respected broadcasts of NBA, MLB, and Monday Night Football games.

On the other side of the of the app inclusion is the announcement of Karaoke from Stingray Music, which looks to provide Xbox 360 users with a more reasonable karaoke experience that Lips may have abandoned in recent memory. Since Stingray Music has had success with the Karaoke Channel on televisions, computers and even on smartphones, video game consoles seemed like the next logical step. Obtaining music in this is hardly an issue; Instead of downloading songs to sing-along to, the app will stream a random collection of free songs that anyone can enjoy. However, to use the full collection of songs, Microsoft Points are needed and even then it’s only to rent from a few hours to an entire day. Of course a microphone is needed, as you are going to need something to sing into, be it a wired or wireless microphone, or just even a headset.

Both of these will not only utilize Kinect, but are also prepared for Smartglass integration to enhance the app’s usage. The ESPN App is currently available with Karaoke ready for December, and will hopefully provide those that aren’t playing Halo 4 or Black Ops 2 with something more sociable when company is over.
