Final Fantasy XIV / Phantasy Star Online 2 Crossover Announced

Posted on March 21, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

FFXIV X PSO2

Two super popular MMORPG games will be coming together for a collaborative event later this summer. A small bit of the world of Eorezea from Square Enix’s popular Final Fantasy XIV will come to SEGA’s galactic sci-fi MMORPG Phantasy Star Online in the form of new equipable items based upon the FFXIV Miqote race and an Odin boss fight encounter.

FFXIV producer Naoki Yoshida (known within the FFXIV community as Yoshi-P) made a special guest appearance at today’s Phantasy Star Online 2 fan event in Tokyo alongside the surprise announcement. The crowd in attendance reportedly began chanting “Yoshi OH OH OH OH OH” as he took the stage at the end of the PSO2 celebration announcements held on the main stage.

Alongside the announcement Square Enix / SEGA released a collaborative trailer that showcases the Odin boss fight. In it we can see an entire raid party take on the iconic black armor clad Final Fantasy boss, doing their best to use PSO2’s energy based weapon against their imposing, horse riding opponent. Ultimately the entire party falls victim to Odin’s iconic zantetsuken attack, which wipes out the entire party in one swift hit.

No word if FFXIV will be getting PSO2 cross over items, however, that game’s fanfest isn’t until later this year. As of right now, PSO2 isn’t even available in the West. The PSO2 X FFXIV crossover items / encounter are expected to be released sometime in Summer 2016.

The issue speeds back to the early days of Sonic the Hedgehog and follows Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose on a brand new adventure taking on the villainous Dr. Eggman and his new nefarious tool of destruction — the MEGADRIVE.

“Not only is Archie Comics celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is also commemorating a milestone anniversary. With 25 years under the Blue Blur’s belt, we wanted to start the celebrations with something truly special,” said Editor Vincent Lovallo.

SEGA sales down, due to not releasing games

Posted on February 5, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

When SEGA announced they would be stepping down their development for consoles most folks assumed that meant the video games giant was about to die. Well they have proved us naysayers wrong. While the company’s operating profit has shown an increase, overall sales have declined. In 2015 SEGA reported 245 billion ($2.9 billion), which is an eight percent decline  in operating profit, but sales were ¥12 billion ($103 million), an increase of 11 percent over 2014.

This is actually quite encouraging news for SEGA, who should see this as an indicator that they are on the right path (even if that’s not the path its fans might want) it also noted in its earnings release a “gradual recovery of the overall Japanese economy continued, despite a lackluster performance in certain respects.” While we don’t know what those lackluster performance areas are, its encouraging to see a video game company saying that they had a good final quarter.

Many SEGA fans will remember that SEGA has been pushing hard for digital games for smart devices. According to their earnings release that segment continues to grow at a “moderate pace” in Japan. As smartphones spread, the competition intensifies, so Sega expects it will invest in “higher-quality content” and as a result will see a trend of “longer development lead times.”

Even though SEGA themselves have said that the physical video game market is a  “persisting harsh market environment” that they are seeing “demand grow in line with the penetration of new-generation hardware.” That is a very good thing, it should mean that we have SEGA games for new consoles for the near future. Since SEGA basically really only has major franchises at this point it comes as no surprise none of them are mentioned in the earnings report.

The next major video game Sega is set to publish is Persona 5. The game and it’s release date were not mentioned in the financial reports. Persona 5 was originally announced as a PS3 game back in 2013. It was then confirmed for release on PS4. Clearly SEGA has come down a long time way since they were releasing new IPs and making a huge impact on games, but if they can turn profit hopefully they will be able to invent more in development of games. or at the very least prevent what happened earlier this year, when the company announced plans of downsizing  and relocating its offices in North America.

7th Dragon III Code: VFD Swoops Down to North America 3DS this Summer

Posted on February 3, 2016 by Jason Nason

The age of dragons is nigh, as SEGA of America announced it will localize and release 7th Dragon III Code: VFD in the Americas. The turn-based, dungeon crawling RPG for the Nintendo 3DS system pits players to save the world with a group of highly customizable characters with diverse party roles, such as Rune Knight, God Hand and more.

In between dungeon crawling sorties, there’s also base building, dating, and a cat café (really). While this is the first of the 7th Dragon series to be released outside of Japan, the story is comprehensive, so no prior knowledge of the series is necessary.

When it arrives this summer in retail stores and on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS, 7th Dragon III: Code VFD will be available for $39.99/CA$54.99.

Mario & Sonic amiibo at the Olympic Games

Posted on January 24, 2016 by Jason Nason

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be released on March 18th, and this year you’ll be able to take your amiibo to the Olympics.

When the action-filled game launches for Nintendo 3DS, both Mario and Sonic amiibo figures will be compatible. By tapping the Mario or Sonic amiibo figures to the New Nintendo 3DS system (or on a Nintendo 2DS/3DS with the NFC Reader/Writer accessory), players can boost Mario and Sonic’s outfits with that character’s power for the day.

sonic_mario_rio_olympics_mii

Basically it looks like this means that you can power up your Mii character in the game and put on Mario or Sonic outfits. It’s a little odd that only Sonic and Mario amiibo are comparable with the game, especially considering there are far more characters in the game who have corresponding amiibo.

While virtually every incarnation of Mario can be tapped (Mario from the Smash series, Dr. Mario, Mario from the Mario Party series, Gold Mario and both classic / modern Super Mario Bros 30th Anniversary series), no other amiibo are compatible.

Why aren’t Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, or Bowswer amiibo compatible? This seems like a huge oversight and very disappointing amiibo compatibility.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio Olympics Gets a release date

Posted on January 12, 2016 by Jason Nason

Nintendo announced the release date for the next installment of the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series. The game will be released on the Nintendo 3DS on March 18th, 2016.

Interestingly the release date for the Wii U version of the game is stated to be “later this year.” Also interesting is that the page for the Wii U game on Nintendo.com doesn’t have a box shot but instead has an image indicitive of a digital only release. Could the Wii U version of the game be skipping stores and being released strictly via digital?

The Joys of Import Gaming: How easy we have it these days

Posted on January 8, 2016 by Erika

As a kid having grown up during the 90s, I got to experience the height of the console wars in full swing: Nintendo vs Sega. Both of those companies duked it out for the dominance of the console market, with several other competitors such as Atari with their Jaguar and NEC’s TurboGrafix-16 lagging severely behind. Unfortunately, with growing up in the US, gamers such as myself missed numerous releases. Some of those were either not localized from Japan, or the translations of various games that did make it over were severely butchered by such things as Nintendo’s no-religious imagery/text policy, or had copious amounts of Engrish. Possibly one of the more famous examples of Engrish was the localization of the Sega MegaDrive game Zero Wing, which spawned one of the earlier memes of 2000/2001.
