Need For Speed Payback Aims To Be The Grand Theft Auto of Racing Games

Posted on June 11, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

It’s an overused and clichéd shorthand to call any game the ‘GTA of [X]’ or the ‘Grand Theft Auto but [Y]’ yet after watching two different demonstrations of Need For Speed Payback that is exactly the direct comparison I find myself making.

Need For Speed Payback was unveiled during the EA Play Keynote and live stream earlier today. In what has become an annual franchise as of late, this latest NFS title sees the player take control of three different protagonists (just like a certain Rockstar game) who are down on their luck. To get the titular payback against a rival group the trio must stage elaborate, almost action movie like, heists (just like a Rockstar developed game that I won’t mention again in this article). Oh and Payback also happens to be “the most open-world NFS titled developed [by Ghost Games]” according to one of the developer during EA’s presentation.

From what they’ve shown of the experience so far, it feels like a mix between a high action movie, the burnout games of yore and the open world– “go anywhere”- gameplay of 2013’s Need For Speed: Rivals. All told this entry looks very promising and since Rivals was one of my favorites in recent memory next to 2010’s Hot Pursuit remake – Need For Speed Rivals could turn out to be a high-octane thrill ride.

Need For Speed Payback will be out on Xbox One / Scoprio, PS4 /PS4 Pro and PC. It will be released on November 11th 2017

New Games Coming To The Origin Access (PC) and EA Access (Xbox One) Vault

Posted on July 13, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Last year’s street racing focused reboot of the Need For Speed franchise is making its way to both the EA Access vault on Xbox One as well as Origin Access’ game vault on Windows PC this week. The latest NFS title received a mediocre reception – averaging just 66 on Metacritic but surely this won’t stop subscribers from getting at least a few hours of enjoyment out of the title.

Alongside the racer EA’s absolutely adorable Unravel will join the collection on both platforms this week as well. I played the 2-hour trial when that hit EA Access this past February and found that Yarny’s unraveling antics were very captivating. This brand new platformer was so successful in its initial launch that EA greenlit a sequel, and now subscribers to both services can try out the full game for free.

Another 7 titles will be added to the PC centric Origin Access vault later this summer. Among them are some oldies from Maxis, Bioware and the game that made PopCap a household name, at least for awhile.

Here is the complete list of titles coming to Origin Access later this summer:

  • Plants Vs Zombies
  • Jade Empire
  • Sim City 2000
  • Mini Metro
  • Crysis Trilogy (1, 2 and 3)

What do you think of these additions to EA’s subscription services? Are they enough to get you to sign up? I signed up for EA Access last year and I’ve got my monies worth out of Titanfall alone. Alongside the free, unlimited access games, EA Access also gives subscribers access to six hour trials for some of EA’s newest games like Star Wars Battlefront. Do you think that we will see Battlefront added to the Origin/EA Access freebie list once the inevitable sequel is announced?

Electronic Arts Details E3 2015 Lineup

Posted on June 14, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Electronic Arts have revealed their full E3 line-up (not including unannounced titles) that will be playable on the show floor.  Yearly releases like FIFA, NHL, PGA Tour and Need for Speed are ready to be played by the gaming press, VIP and industry insiders. Surprisingly EA will also have a playable demo of Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst on the floor as well – here’s hoping that they show at least a few sections of the E3 demo during their press conference.

Speaking of EA’s E3 press conference it will be taking place at 1PM PST tomorrow and if you’re not in Los Angeles you can enjoy the entire conference from your office / couch or smartphone by heading over to their official website.

EA Announces Need For Speed Reboot

Posted on May 21, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Electronic Arts and developer Ghost Games have announced a reboot of the popular racing franchise Need For Speed. They’ve been quietly listening to the NFS community for feedback regarding what fans want to see in future instalments. This latest entry apparently takes cues from the Need For Speed: Underground games featuring a focus on “urban care culture”, car customization and a nocturnal open world.

Alongside this announcement EA released the game’s logo which you can see below and a brief teaser trailer. The full trailer will be revealed at E3 on June 15th!

Need For Speed will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC this fall.

Need for Speed Full Trailer Released

Posted on November 21, 2013 by Jason Nason

As a gamer I don’t know how many times I accidentally called the Fast and Furious movies Need for Speed. After playing the games for so long it just seemed natural and always confused me that there wasn’t a movie based of the video game property. Until now.

Entertainment One and Dreamworks Pictures is releasing next year and they have just released the first full trailer for the film. The film follows street racer Tobey Marshall (Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul) who is freshly out of prison after being framed and locked up for a crime he didn’t commit. Marshall is hell bent on settling the score.

Are you psyched that the series is finally getting the silver screen treatment or are you cautiously optimistic to see if the filmmakers will treat the license right and make a decent movie. What do you think of the trailer and the upcoming movie?

Need For Speed Kinect Controls In Action

Posted on October 20, 2012 by Les Major

The new Need For Speed: Most Wanted is set to launch from the starting line October 30th and the latest features are looking pretty handy. I havn’t played Mass Effect 3 yet, so I can’t relate to the comparison in the video below but the new kinect additions to NFS sound like something I would use. This is what I expected from the voice controls in kinect.

Basically you’re able to bring up in game menus while racing by just using voice commands. Of course this is just an additional feature and you can do everything the usual manual way, but check out the video below. It’s actually quite neat and quicker than the usual controls.
