Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate | Review

Posted on March 5, 2013 by Les Major

The most important thing to get out of the way is this game is a side-scroller based on the console Castlevania: Lords of Shadow game. This isn’t your usual Metroidvania, and while it has somewhat familiar mapping, it’s more linear. There are a million ways you can compare this title to Metroidvania titles (such as Symphony of the Night) however this game just isn’t one of them. So lets look at what Mirror of Fate is.Read More

Metal Gear Rising Will Be Wonderful On Your Dark Days

Posted on February 12, 2013 by Eric Bastelak

Konami has released a wonderful new Metal Gear Rising trailer. It reminds me that regardless of financial difficulties I need to buy this game. Because no matter how dark the world seems there is something serene about hacking enemies to pieces. Call it morbid, call it whatever you want. Games are an interactive medium that help us gamers blow off steam. In my experience something like Rising will allow me to reduce stress, therefore causing less anger. What I love about this trailer is it shows just how much Konami gets this side of gaming culture. Right on Konami!

Superheroes Battle It Out For Fan Votes In WB’s New Campaign

Posted on February 5, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

We already knew that our favorite DC Comics characters were going to duke it out in NetherRealm Studio’s Injustice: Gods Among Us, but what we didn’t know was that the WB planned to launch a popularity contest weeks before the game’s release. Obviously this is meant as a way to drum up hype and support for the title before its April release, but this certainly is a neat approach.

Dubbed the “Battle Arena,” every week for the next 10 weeks, Warner Bros will pit two characters against each other, with fan votes determining the winner. Each week a pre-match video will be released showcasing the combatant for that round. Fan opinion is gauged through Facebook and Twitter and a final video showcasing the results of fan opinion is released that same Thursday.

So the whole thing is kind of like March Madness, except with super heroes instead of basketball teams!

We’ve got the first pre-match video in the embedded player after the jump. Who will you vote for me? I think every vote I will cast will be for Batman, because… he’s fucking Batman, I don’t need another reason.

Correction: The original version of this post incorrectly stated that Injustice was being published by Konami. The game is in fact published by Warner Bros. InteractiveRead More

Slicing And Dicing The First Hour of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Posted on January 28, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Is there anything more badass than a Cyborg Ninja? With augmented features like a steel exoskeleton, an array of sensors and lightning quick reflexes, they are one of the most adept, albeit fictional, combatants. I am happy to report that controlling Raiden in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance  is as smooth as butter and feels absolutely fantastic. Oh? You played the demo and already knew this? Well, I got a chance to check out a near final build of the game this past week, and I’m fully prepared to share the experience of spending an hour in Raiden’s shoes, err, heels.Read More

Kojima: Metal Gear Rising Originally Starred Grey Fox

Posted on January 21, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Metal Gear Rising Revengeance once was set to star the original cyborg ninja, Grey Fox (Aka. Frank Jager), according to series creator Hideo Kojima. Speaking with IGN he states the original idea was shot down in favor of newly augmented bad ass Raiden after considering feedback given to him by staff at Kojima Studios. He felt that passing on some of the responsibility regarding the direction of the series to younger designers was key to its continued success.

“It was my staff in Kojima Productions that insisted on Raiden, and I respected their idea … In my personal opinion, I wanted to go for Frank Jaegar or Gray Fox. But if we had gone with that, I would have had to write the script and then be really committed to creating the game.”

Konami is set to launch Metal Gear Rising Revengeance on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on Feb 19th in North America.

Zone of the Enders HD | Review

Posted on December 11, 2012 by Jason Bassett

Version Tested: Xbox 360 (Also available on PlayStation 3).

In March of 2001, Konami unleashed a new type of game on the world with Zone of the Enders. It was a completely different take on the Mech action genre and hailed as one of the very best the industry had seen. Zone of the Enders was developed by an in-house team at Konami, led by legendary game designer Hideo Kojima. In this version of the game, Zone of the Enders HD features both entries of the original Playstation 2 hits: Zone of the Enders and Zone of the Enders: 2nd Runner. Each of these games contain frantic action and great story telling.

But, is Zone of the Enders HD worth your pickup?Read More

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Achievements Revealed

Posted on December 7, 2012 by Rae Michelle Richards

Metal Gear Rising

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance got a whole slew of updates over the last 24 hours. Konami released the full achievement list for the game over at Xbox 360 achievements. If you’re going to be slicing and dicing along Raiden then you’ll want to know when you hear that sweet “unlock sound effect” right?

There is your fair share of achievements that everyone who plays through the game will unlock, like an achievement for beating each chapter (called files). The harder achievements like beating each of the game’s files with an S rank on the hardest difficulty will of course be reserved for the hardest of the hard core among us. I’m also going to be aiming for the “listen to all codec conversations” achievements because those range from interesting (see snakes’ interactions with Octacon), to moan worthy (I’m looking at you MGS2’s Raiden and Rose) or just plain W.T.F (the finale of MGS2).

Sorry Xbox 360 Owners, Still No Metal Gear Solid 4 For You!

Posted on November 28, 2012 by Rae Michelle Richards

An Xbox 360 version of Metal Gear Solid 4 has been the butt of a joke in the PS3 community for some time. It went so far as to have users create image macros of a 20 disc Xbox 360 box art mock up for the game. So that when we learned that a New Zealand retail outlet listed an Xbox version of the game we were a little skeptica

As it turns out, the image is just the PS3 artwork for the 25th anniversary edition of the game that was recently released with an Xbox 360 banner plastered on top. A konami rep told another outlet the game is not planned for the Xbox360 and will remain a PS3 exclusive. Considering each chapter in the five chapter epic takes up 3,500MB each in addition to a 25GB Blu Ray you’d be looking at five discs or more to contain the game. Then again, games like Lost Odyssey are four discs and this year’s Halo 4 required an 8GB install for some features. So there is a precident for larger games.

All of this doesn’t mean that Xbox 360 owners are without Metal Gear Solid love in the near future. Both Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeros and Metal Gear Solid: Risingare scheduled for 2013 on PS3/Xbox 360. The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection was released for the Xbox 360 last year that included MGS2, Peace Walker and MGS 3.

Metal Gear Social Sneaks Card Battles Onto Your Phone

Posted on September 20, 2012 by Rae Michelle Richards

Metal Gear is no stranger to add genre mash-ups. Whether it’s Solid Snake appearing in Super Smash Bros Brawl or Hideo Kojima’s digital card game MGS ACID, Snake isn’t confined to one particular gameplay style.

This is certainly true of Konami’s latest Metal Gear title, Metal Gear Social, which the company describes as a mobile game sneaking game with a card collecting element. The gameplay in Social is divided into two distinct sections: The first has the player controlling Snake as he sneaks from one side of the map to another, similar to sections in Peace Walker. The other has Snake battling bosses in a more open environment using collectable cards, which he collects by performing steal maneuvers in the first section.

No word on whether or not the game will involve microtransactions for these in-game cards or whether the game will be purchased for $0.99/$2.99 or a similar price. As with anything this niche, no word yet on a North American release.
