3D Remastered Sonic the Hedgehog on the Way

Posted on December 3, 2013 by Jason Nason

The next game coming in the SEGA 3D Classics series for the 3DS eShop has been revealed and it’s Sonic the Hedgehog from the Sega Genesis. The first two games in the set were released just last week in 3D Space Harrier and 3D Super Hang-On. Sonic seems like the next logical step to get the 3D treatment.

The game is likely still a ways off from being released, but SEGA put up a lenghty blog post today with an interview from the developers of the project.

Yousuke Okunari, a producer at SEGA, had this to say about the project on the blog. “So far with the 3D Remaster Project, we’ve put out Space Harrier and Super Hang-on. People might have been looking forward to another arcade cabinet game port, but our next release is actually a stereoscopic 3D adaptation of Sonic The Hedgehog.”

“As we discussed in our previous interviews, our previous two releases were games where the player “scrolls into the screen”, something easy for anyone to imagine in 3D. But for the next game, we wanted to put out a game that people wouldn’t expect to see in 3D. With that in mind, we considered multiple titles and in the end we chose Sonic’s debut game, because there’s nothing more SEGA than that.”

Atlus Announces Persona 5

Posted on November 24, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Atlus has released a very cryptic trailer for the newest entry in their Shin Megami Tensei franchise, the highly anticipated Persona 5. A very brief trailer was posted online today, which reveals little about the title. In the less than minute long trailer we see five chairs fade into existence against a red backdrop. The only readable text (for those not fluent in Japanese) teases us about being slaves and craving emancipation – honestly we are just as confused you are at this point.

Persona 5 is currently in development and is scheduled to release sometime in 2014 for the PlayStation 3 in Japan with no solid details for a western release. Those of you hoping for a next-generation Persona are out luck for the time being, but this move shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.  The last main game in the series, Persona 4, was released on the PlayStation 2 in 2008 – two years after the release of the PS3! It was also ported to the PlayStation Vita with several improvements as Persona 4: Golden last year.

Check out the teaser trailer for yourself after the jump.Read More

Sega Purchases Index Corp, Owners of Atlus, For $141M

Posted on September 22, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Index Corp, the troubled owner of third party publisher Atlus, has agreed to sell off their stake in the popular company to SEGA for the equivalent of $141 million dollars. Should everything go well the newly formed Sega Dream Corporation will take ownership of Index’s intellectual property and business operations no later than November 1st.

This acquisition gives SEGA an ever-growing portfolio of long standing game franchises that will surely fit well alongside Sonic, Jet Set Radio and other classics. Joining the SEGA family are the popular Shin Megami Tensei series, Persona franchise and other JRPG titles. All of this comes after SEGA purchased the developers of Company of Heroes, Relic, from the now defunct THQ this past June.

If you’re anything like me the first thing you’d be worried about is whether or not this deal will result in Atlus changing their strategy for game releases in the west. Up until this point Atlus has been a large part of the niche JRPG market alongside XSeed, NIS America and to a certain point Square Enix. Each of these companies have taken risks by localizing and releasing titles that are far from guaranteed successes in the West, just look at the mixed reaction Mugen Souls received last year!Read More

Project X Zone | Review

Posted on July 29, 2013 by Broken Joysticks

Namco Bandai × Capcom × Sega. No, you’re not reading this wrong, Banpresto and Monolith Soft have joined together to co-develop Project X Zone. This is not a fighting game (sorry versus fans). Project X Zone is a tactical role-playing game featuring characters across popular series such as Street Fighter, Megaman, Sakura Wars, Resonance of Fate, Xenosaga, and Tales of Vesperia, among others. For the very, very few of you who played Namco × Capcom (not to be confused with Street Fighter X Tekken), this game is no surprise. The story is what is expected of crossover titles: an artifact is stolen from original characters Mii Koryuji and Kogoro Tenzai, which triggers a chain of events where different universes begin to intertwine, which throws characters from different franchises in alternate worlds. Tron Bonne from the future lands at Willamete Mall, where Frank West is from, to give a perfect example. Read More

Sonic: The Lost World Gameplay Footage Released

Posted on June 12, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

A few weeks ago we brought you the news that Nintendo has secured the exclusive rights to future Sonic the Hedgehog titles. The first such title, Sonic The Lost World takes cues from both Mario Galaxy and the IOS free to play game Sonic Dash. In this game Sonic is propelled forwards at a constant rate, similar to Sonic Colors, but he also must travel between floating islands, filled with staple items from the Sonic series, such as rings and boost pads.

Check out a brief game play video, originally found on GameTrailers after the jump.Read More

SEGA Reveals Disney’s Castle of Illusion

Posted on April 15, 2013 by Jason Nason

SEGA revealed a new teaser trailer for Disney’s Castle of Illusion, starring Mickey Mouse, today. The teaser is an expanded look at an uber teaser they released last week. And while the game looks like it could be something to see, the most notable thing that I can see is the omission of Nintendo platforms for the game’s release.

The original Castle of Illusion was a a platformer game developed by Sega and released for the Sega Genesis and Sega Master System way back in 1990. That was followed up with a release on Sega’s portable Game Gear system in 1991. It is the first game in Sega’s Illusion series of video games starring Mickey Mouse. It was amongst the second wave of games initially released for the platform which helped seal the console’s reputation within the period until the release of Sonic the Hedgehog.Read More
