LawBreakers was the best game at PAX East

Posted on May 2, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

The most fun I had playing a game at the recent PAX East convention wasn’t as I had expected one of the many Xbox games on demo (gears 4, Mirrors Edge 2) or even the VR experiences. It was in fact a new twist on the old school genre of the arena shooter. That game is called LawBreakers from Nexon, and it’s incredible. Arena shooter are nothing new, this year alone we have Gearbox and 2K’s cell shaded Battle Born, Blizzard’s massive Overwatch, and now LawBreakers. Arena shooters it would seem are back, and I for one could not be happier. So it should be no surprise that my favorite game was a shooter, but the one it was might surprise you. That game was LawBreakers.

LawBreakers was a bit of a stealth game prior to this PAX, the only thing I had seen for it was a B roll of highlights and a really well done CGI story trailer. Last we heard it was to be a free to play arena shooter with some moba like elements. The game was basically completely off my radar because of that. Now it has reemerged, a resurgent force in the new pantheon of arena shooters. The free to play model is gone, the game will now be exclusive to steam, and everything looks great. Since I hadn’t heard any of this prior to the convention,  I was quite surprised to upon reaching the floor  PAX find that it had a booth of its own, and quite a large one. The booth was adorned with character art, and a large screen playing some highlights of the game.

The roll playing on the large screen in back was what first attracted me to the game, and I was not disappointed. A fast ninja character swung outside the map to reach higher ground, a heavy soldier launched rockets, and a rocket carrying guy fired at his feet to launch himself up the air. My interest was peaked. It turned out that LawBreakers was a fast fun, class based arena shooter, so I got in line to give it a try. Since this was the media hour there weren’t many people waiting and I was able to get in quite quickly. As I settled my butt down in to one of the DxRacer chairs I really had no idea what to expect, I knew this was going to be a shooter with abilities, similar to several other AAA arena shooters scheduled for this year, but it really doesn’t look like those other ones at all. Instead it has the aesthetics of Quake or a Doom, with its own unique twist.

The game is really pretty, and as I got started I couldn’t help but look around at the beautiful world that had been created, but I found myself with no time to admire it as the game was beginning. To get an idea of how fast this game is you really have to play it, but I’ll do my best to describe it. I picked the generic soldier character with a rifle, sprint ability, a grenade, and a rocket launcher that you activated and then it sort of charged up and you could lock on and fire. He also had a secondary weapon that shot a large ball of lightning which a developer explained to me was basically a shotgun.

For this demo we were playing a 5v5 mode which was a sort of a capture the flag where you would pick up the flag which was called a “Battery” and then take it to charging station, where it would slowly charge and when it was full your team scored a point. The game was a timed mode, so the most points at the end of the time won. Our team managed to score two points in about 15 minutes of game play.

My team was composed of two of the fast movement based character Kitsune (classed as an assassin), one me (playing as the Breacher, classed as a gunner) and two Maverick’s (classed as a skirmisher) this was a pretty fair team comp. The skirmisher is a heavy gunner, the assassin is mobile, fragile, DPS unit, and I fell somewhere in between, giving us plenty of movement and ability to counter the enemies heavies and firepower to back it up. The only class missing was the games most advertised a heavy rocket solder called Cronos (classes as a Titan).

Teams thus assembled we began, and oh what a beginning, the battery began in the center and both teams rushed to it. I was also given a sprint ability which made me really much faster than the rest of the other players, but was very limited. So I used it to sprint to the center of the map. The center area of the map we played on (the Grand Canyon) was one of the games signature zero G areas. These areas see you able to jump much higher and sort of float, and are the reason I found this game so unique. Most if not all of the characters in the game have a movement ability, which comes in greatly handy when you’re dealing with an area that has no gravity in it. I found that if I jumped headed for a ledge I would sometimes make it and sometime snot which felt really fun and interesting as a game mechanic

As the game continued I got a little better at this area, and could after some time manage to get myself out of the zero g area by shooting or using grenades. My team eked out a win after about 15 minutes of game play, and it wasn’t easy! The battery was constantly back and forth between our two teams, and the great level design meant that when the battery was in your base charging you couldn’t just camp it because there were too many ways in. I also want to mention that this game features the older school method of a large health pool that does not regenerate. So when you have low healthy (which will happen a lot) you have two options, first you can stay in and maybe die, or you can disengage and go to a health station, of which I found three on the map, and stand in it for a while to regain health.  This was a cool mechanic that I wish more modern shooters would use; I dislike the regenerating health that seems to be the standard, as it seems to encourage small quick engagements and then fleeing.  Each different character also has a different amount of health, so your tanky Titan characters will be able to take more hits than say an assassin Kitsune.

The game does have melee, in the form of a kick, and thank god for that, because otherwise Kitsune (the assassin) would be so overpowered it would be sickening. She’s still quite powerful in the hands of a good player, but others will quickly learn to kick her back and shoot at her to prevent a slicing dicing death.  These little bits of attention to detail, like giving the long range soldier a short range option in his secondary weapon, really made the game feel complete and balanced.

The whole game felt amazing, complete, and ready to go, I didn’t catch any major bugs or errors in my short time playing but I did notice that maps weren’t rotating so it seems like only that one map was ready at the time of the demo.  The gravity elements didn’t feel contrived and all of the classes felt like they were balanced. Each one could do damage, get kills, and do enough damage to be considered viable.  Overall I really cant wait to play this game when it eventually hits shelves.

you can sing up for the Alpha test phase of LawBreakers here.

Root Double -Before Crime * After Days-. Review! VN GO!

Posted on May 2, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

A  VN Review by: Szko

Trapped in an underground facility with no exit, in a race against time as radiation levels threaten to kill you, and far too many people to save. This is the premise of Root Double -Before Crime * After Days-.

Root Double is a Visual Novel created by Regista and Yeti and released in Japan back in 2012. Thanks to Sekai Project the Xtend Edition of the game received a worldwide re-release in 2016. For those that don’t know a Visual Novel or VN is basically a book with pictures. Text appears on the screen and you either click the mouse or hit the enter button until it goes away. If you actually want to enjoy the game you’re going to have to read it though as that is where the content resides. The bulk of the gameplay for a visual novel consists of hitting the enter button. However, a lot of visual novels have a system where there are multiple routes or possible stories and story endings. It is like a choose your own adventure book you occasionally are given a choice to make which affects the outcome of the story if you get a bad end or a good end.

Construction comes to Planetside 2

Posted on May 2, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Planetside 2 has a special place in my heart, its a game that basically lets you drop in for an hour or two, shoot some stuff, then hop off, the world goes on with out you. During my price of playing circa 2013 I was in a pretty good outfit of about 50 players, so there were always ops going on. I have since dropped the game from my rotation (there are just too many games to play!) but this newest update has be chomping at the bit to get back in to the world for at least a little poking around.

If you have never played the game, its basically a MASSIVE shooter, think hundreds of people on the same server, all shooting at each other. Vehicles clash, aircraft fly above, and the whole thing is a bit of organized chaos. The game has many mechanics that keep if from just being about shooting things (but you can do that if your like me) and now there is one additional thing as well. Ill let the video explain.

It sounds just a bit RTS-e if you ask me, harvest a resource, and build things like storage for more resources, producers, and other stuff. If you still want to read the boring details hers the official post  but the video does a pretty good job of explaining it. Structures take 45 seconds to complete regardless of its a giant cordium silo, or a wall. This seems a bit broken, but these type of things really do take some time to balance. For now its interesting to pop back in to the game and see the fighting moved away from the massive bases which were its previous home and off in to player build and controlled realms which were previously the middle of nowhere.

So if we add the fact that you can now RTS in what was before an MMOFPS i guess we get an RTSMMOFPS? Too many letters, ill just leave it at being called one of the most unique games I have ever played. At the very least we can say that this is one game that seems to defy genre boundaries, and as a former player, who will probably go back to give this a try, I urge you to at least dip your toe in and see how you like it.

Posted on April 29, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Focus Home Interactive is killing it with the 40K license recently. First they published Blood Bowl, then Battle Fleet Gothic, and now they are publishing Space Hulk Deathwing. Not much info has been released about this game, but IGN has finally given us our first look, and holy wow, this game looks amazing. Hopefully its being demoed at E3 so i can get my hands on it, but untill then I will just have to salivate over trailers and other media.

Steam is having a massive sale on Anime games this weekend

Posted on April 29, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

So anyone who is recently reading the site knows I am a huge anime fan, I recently unboxed an anime lootcrate, I shared with you my current watch list for this season, and now I may have died and gone to heaven, because Steam is  having a sale on anime games. Steep discounts are being offered on everything from the well known Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm series all the way to the series of Hyperdimension Neptunia games and nearly everything in between.

If you are a fan of anime at all, this sale is going to empty your wallet. Even if you are just a fan of anime style fighting games you may be in trouble as all of the guilty gear and Blaze Blue games are also on sale! It seems like steam has really pulled out all of the stop on their anime collection. The discounts are a bit all over though, 10% on Helen’s Mysterious Castle doesnt really feel like its as good of a deal as 75% off of Chantelise. I could nitpick a whole bunch including how some of these games aren’t really anime but I am just glad to see steam featuring anything developed out side of the west.

Here is the full list if you really want it highlights include  Hatoful Boyfriend for $2.49, Transformers: Devastation for $24.99 and the Mega Man Legacy Collection for $10. But if you are anything like me, that is a giant anime nerd, you probably already own at least a few of these, and the rest may be sitting on your wish list. Interestingly, also included in the sale are several Naruto movies, and as far as i can tell only Naruto movies. I didn’t even know that steam sold movies, I guess I know now.

Steam will now accept Bitcoins

Posted on April 29, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Put this one in the category of “things that are about a year too late” Steam will start to accept Bitcoins in the form of BitPay for steam products. The market seems mainly aimed at international folks, but will no doubt also attract some of the rabid fans of the crypto-currency. Weather its for international or just crypto loving people, its a good move for Valve, who join an ever growing list of vendors online who accept the most popular crypto-currency Bitcoins. No doubt this will help grow Steams already impressive 125 million users from around the globe.

fuckyoucnet

BitPay wrote in a post on their website “Valve reached out to us because they were looking for a fast, international payment method for Steam users in emerging gaming markets in countries like India, China and Brazil,” Rory Desmond, BitPay’s director of business development in North America and APAC said, “While more users are coming online in in these countries, traditional payment options like credit cards often aren’t available.”

So hey im not sure someone in India or Brazil is going to know how to deal with the complexities of Crypto-currency but if they can get power, internet, and a computer, they can now buy things on steam via the most popular Bitcoin payment system. Personally ill stick to Paypal for a while.

Call of Duty 4 Remster confirmed via Twitter

Posted on April 28, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

so what your looking at there, is the first ever confirmation that humanity is doomed, I MEAN, that much beloved COD 4 is getting a remake for the new  Infinite Warfare: Legacy Edition. For at least several days rumor has been circulating that the first ever Modern Warfare, Call of Duty Modern Warfare, would be getting an HD remake in the coming months, now it seems that Activision has officially confirmed it, via emojis, on twitter. I cant believe i just typed that sentence. So there you go, we may get an awesome remake of Crash and Shipment. I for one will probably buy it just for the fun of playing a game where grenade spam and noob tubes kill me before I can ever take a shot.

GameWisp stream tools aims to bring a sub button to the masses

Posted on April 28, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

GameWisp is a new product designed for streamers who are not partners on Twitch to be able to get themselves the same type of benefits that partners get. The main benefit they provide is a sub button just like the partnered Twitch streamers have.  CTO Eli Hooten was kind enough to take a few moment from his busy PAX schedule to tell us what GameWisp is all about.

Though I have not been able to try GameWisp out yet myself, it seems like it fills a much needed niche in the industry for smaller non-partnered streamers who usually have to risk the minefield that is Paypal to accept donations on their Twitch channels. I have our featured streamer Roblogfett trying it out, and will publish another report once he gets a good feel for how it handles.

Total War: Warhammer Scenario Walk Through with Andy Hall

Posted on April 28, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Total Warhammer is an upcoming tactical army battle game from SEGA and Creative Assembly. We had the amazing chance to watch a guided play through of one of the games missions with Andy Hall. Andy walked us through an attack scenario where he was playing as the humans and attacking a group of vampire counts.

During his play through we were able to see many of the games mechanics, including the new ability to control in first person many of the games artillery units, and the improvements that have been made to calvary units to make them feel more impactful. From what I saw and was able to play, the game is taking shape as a wonderful telling of the Warhammer: Fantasy world put in to the frame work of a total war game.

Ill let Andy do most of the telling, but when the video starts up Rae and I are standing next to Andy and he’s about to get down to business with our human faction taking on the Vampire counts. Keep an eye on the screen while you listen to his narration and explanation of whats going on as he fights for the fate of man.

I for one can’t wait to get my hands on Total War: Warhmmer when it releases on May 24th.

No mans sky wont have a story, but its going to have lore

Posted on April 28, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

No mans sky is one of this years biggest games, but it doesn’t have a story per-say. The developer has confirmed that there will be no cut scenes, or other normal style of story telling in game, but that doesn’t mean there will be no environment or atmosphere. Instead the story will be told through  the atmosphere, the land, and the people who inhabit it. The environment will be the story.

In order to do that the developers brought on board Dave Gibbons and James Swallow veteran Hollywood story tellers with credits like Watchmen and Star Trek under their belts. The video is an advertisment yes, but its also a neat look in to what goes in to setting up a game like this, building its world and lore, with out telling any specific story.

Posted on April 27, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Developer Grey Box games announced after PAX this weekend that their much anticipated space ship combat game Dreadnought will enter a closed beta period on April 29th. I have had my eye on this game since it first surfaced a couple of PAX’s ago, its basically a 3D space shooter, with classes like a sniper, a heavy, and a healer. Its a bit of  class based shooter mixed with the fun of 3D space combat. Now operating on a free to play model the game has surfaced again and this time its for the public to give it a try.

Set in a futuristic era of all-out galactic warfare, Dreadnought turns strategic, team-based warfare into one heart-pounding, action experience. Each of the game’s varied vessels is designed to fill a unique, class-based role, and can be customized with specialized weapons, abilities, cosmetic enhancements and more. Head over to their webstite to sign up for a chance to get in to the Beta, or chose to buy in.

The game is from veteran developer Grey Box Games, who recently published RTS Grey Goo, as well as Six Foot and independent developer YAGER. Players who do not wish to have the elements of random chance effecting their chance to get in the to the beta have the option to purchase their access in two different packs. Currently the Hunter and Mercenary packs are available. Hard Reset Redux is simply amazing

Posted on April 27, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Hard Reset is a game from flying Wild Hog game, that came out in 2012. It was the studios first game development effort, and by 2012 standards was a fantastic game. With a Doom like vibe, and an awesome cyber punk setting the game was atmospheric, challenging, and gathered a cult following. Now Flying Wild Hog are returning to their first ever game, with a full engine rebuild, and lots of new tricks under the hood

Hard Reset Redux, is not just a remake of Hard Reset in a new engine, it is so  much more, it has a katana! In all seriousness, new enemies have been added, enemy locations have been changed and the whole game has been overhauled to run better on modern hardware. A quick dash has been added to allow players to escape from enemies in an all new way.

I had the opportunity to speak to a few of the games programmers from Flying Wild Hog, and they were kind enough to allow me to capture video of one of the games giant boss fights.Read More

Darkest dungeon is getting a Linux port in its latest update

Posted on April 27, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Darkest Dungeon is a site favorite and one of the few games I actually keep on my PC at all times. Since its official release in January the game has essentially been constantly updated and this update, planned for mid may, will bring brings both Linux support and a new way for missions to end. Missions will now end in the hamlet which will have its own events that will only trigger at the end of certain missions. an example of this is provided in the post: “For example, the ALL SAINTS DAY event has a high chance to proc after successfully completing the Ruins Gather Holy Relics Quest,” a studio spokesperson explains in a recent update.

Darkest Dungeon Town

They go on to explain how one such even will work: “ALL SAINTS DAY sends the Abbey into a zealous celebration, and makes all treatments there free for that week! We like this example as it helps answer a common community concern on the value of the various gather/destroy quests that we’ve had in the game for a long time, and have been criticized for their loss in value due to inventory restrictions.”

The other part of this announcement is the Linux port. Linux gamers often get no love, so its always nice to see a developer giving the penguin side of operating systems some love. The port is available now, also mentioned is that Red Hook is hard at work on a set of , “better tools, docs and Steam Workshop integration”. interesting, so perhaps in the next few months we will see steam workshop integration which will open up modding for custom character classes, and levels. I would very much like to be able to play with some more characters, or diffrent status effects. Only time will tell!

What do you think of Darkest Dungeon? Why not tell us on Facebook or Twitter
