Day of the Tentacle Remastered Coming to PS4 in March 2016, Full Throttle Remastered Confirmed for Later

Day of the Tentacle Remastered

Last night on stage, Tim Shafer announced that Day of the Tentacle Remastered will be coming to PS4 next March. The game will feature an updated control scheme, as well as a new coat of paints to make the now well over 2 decade old game look the part. It has also been confirmed by studio Double Fine behind the scenes that they are also working on a remaster of Full Throttle, which will release at some point after Day of the Tentacle for PS4 and Vita.

I’m a bit too young to have much fondness for old fashioned point-and-clicks. I just about managed to catch the tail-end of Grim Fandango as the genre was dying out. Now, with Telltale’s work in putting the genre back on the map, albeit in a new form, it feels like more and more developers are also willing to try returning to the more traditional forms of this genre, with games like Dropsy doing very well for themselves. Day of the Tentacle is not the kind of game I’d install dosbox for, but I’d give a remaster a go. Let’s just hope this project does well, so we can finally see that Psychonauts 2 game that’s currently being funded on Fig.

(Oh, and play Dropsy if you haven’t yet. Seriously, I’m putting a link here cause that game is amazing.)

Doom Alpha Now Open For All If You Hurry

Posted on December 3, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

Doom Alpha

Players can now register for the Doom Alpha happening this weekend for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. According to tweets by developer Bethesda, keys are being given on a first come first serve basis so you better hurry if you want one. You can sign up for the Alpha here.

The new Doom game hasn’t recieved too much hype as of right now, and Bethesda is currently keeping any footage of the Alpha strictly under wraps. Any player that participates will have to agree to an NDA. Doom is one of those franchises that hasn’t been good for a long time, but on the other hand it hasn’t been made for a long time either so maybe that will balance it out. It’s hard for a franchise that codified many of our now standard things in gaming to not appear generic, and I don’t know if this new Doom will succeed in actually being interesting. Still, if shooters are your thing Doom is still a pretty big deal, so go out there and shoot some demons. Just be sure not to tell anyone too much about it, lest the lawyers come and get you.

Undertale | Review

Posted on December 1, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

Review By: Andrea Ritsu

This is a review of Undertale that is 100% spoiler free. Reasons why are given in the review but I want you all to understand that this is a very difficult game to review because of this very reason. Almost any detail, even from the game’s own store page, can harm your first experience should you learn it. Knowing this, if you wish to not even risk reading this carefully written review then just know that my verdict is as follows; buy Undertale and play it as soon as possible.Read More

Steam Controller Review

Posted on November 26, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

Review By: Robyn Robo

Valve has been releasing new in-house and licensed hardware at a breakneck pace lately, and the Steam Controller is a core component backing up their bid for the living room. Unlike classic console manufacturers, however, Valve has had to bend over backward in accommodating games built for the desktop and, overall, has done well.Read More

Illaoi, the Kraken Priestess Gets Her Own Browser Game As Riot Releases New League of Legends Champion

Posted on November 24, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

Illaoi

Illaoi, the Kraken Priestess, is the newest playable character for Free To Play money printing machine and biggest E-sport on Earth League of Legends. To celebrate, Riot has created a promotional browser-based minigame meant to show off her powers and backstory.

Really it’s nothing more than a cutscene and a bunch of quick-time events, but it is a pretty neat way of introducing a new Champion to the roster. I’ve always liked how much effort Riot puts into making sure all the designs for their Champions are distinctive and have a clear personality to them. Let’s hope this new one doesn’t break the game. Again.

Fig Crowdfunding Service Opening Up To Smaller Investors

Posted on November 24, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

Fig

Fig, the crowdfunding platform that apparently already existed prior to me writing this news story, is changing it’s rules in regards to crowdfunding and “investors”. Fig’s signature feature is that if a minimum of 1000 dollars is given to a campaign, one will share in a portion of the profits proportional to the amount put in. These “investors” as Fig calls them were only allowed to participate if they had a yearly salary of at least 200.000 dollars, or a net worth of at least 1.000.000 dollars. This restriction has now been lifted for people wanting to invest anywhere between 1.000 and 10.000 dollars, although for amounts above 10.000 dollars the restriction still applies.

Fig is not only very selective of its special backers, but also of its campaigns. As of right now, only two campaigns have ever gone up on the service. Outer Wilds, which just managed to scrape in its 125.000 dollar asking price, and Anchors in the Drift, which didn’t even pass one third of the 500.000 dollar mark it was aiming for. It is fair to say that Fig as a crowdfunding service hasn’t been making too many splashes. I also fail to see the reasoning behind gating off its one distinguishing feature behind a salary wall. Still, I do think there’s a place for a more curated crowdfunding platform besides Indiegogo and Kickstarter. Let’s face it, the quality of the projects that go up on Crowdfunding sites can be….lacking, and a platform that strictly curates and vets its campaigns is an interesting prospect. Who knows, Fig might find its bearings after this change. I’ll certainly be interested in checking out what they choose to host as their third campaign.

Modder Discovers Unused Weapon in Fallout 4 Data

Posted on November 21, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

A modder that goes by the name xxdeathknight72xx has found an unused weapon in Fallout 4’s data and has since released it as a mod on NexusMods. This may be something from an unreleased DLC, or simply something they chose not to include in the final game for whatever reason. The gun is a sweet looking “underwater” weapon that’s basically a harpoon gun in both appearance and function. The mod itself overrides the Railway Rifle, as it is a direct replacement for the time being. I’ll include a video from a YouTube user named Tyrannicon featuring the mod at the bottom of the post right after the mods’ link.

You can find the gun/mod here.

Screenshots Released for Attack on Titan Game

Posted on November 21, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan is getting a game and Koei Tecmo has uploaded a bunch of screengrabs and videos sans audio on its official website. The footage features some of the characters interacting with each other, while the screengrabs focus mostly on showcasing the Titans, as well as the maneuver gear.

Alright, so let’s get this out of the way: The Titan’s look incredibly freaky in these. A lot of people are slagging it off for that but….I think that might be a good thing? In the original series, the titans are given purposefully weird faces and walking cycles, with frames cut out to make their movements seem stilted or unnatural. They are meant to be off-putting in a way that’s kind of comical but also creepy. From what I can tell, these designs try to do the same thing, which is neat! I also like the gameplay, which seems to be reminiscent of the free Attack on Titan webgame. Attack on Titan is going to launch sometime in 2016 for PS3, PS4, and Vita. I’m looking forward to it.

Gravity Rush Remastered Is Getting a Physical Release For PS4

Posted on November 14, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

Game developer James Mielke has announced through twitter that Gravity Rush Remastered will be getting a retail release in North America. It will launch on February 9th 2016 and will include all DLC previously made for the game.

The remaster was originally only getting a digital release in North America. Physical releases were already planned for Japan and Europe. Box art sure is pretty enough to warrant having it on my shelf. I’m not much of a physical collector myself, but for those that prefer boxed I’m sure the choice is welcome.

Clannad is coming to Steam on November 23

Posted on November 14, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

Publisher Sekai Project has announced a translation of the famous visual novel Clannad will be coming to steam on November 23. The release is the end result of a succesful kickstarter campaign which managed to scrape in well over half a million dollars. In addition to an English translation, this version will have improved visuals and achievement integration.

What might surprise many is that this is actually the first official English release of Clannad, despite having a huge following in the west. This is because all the English versions of the visual novel currently circulating are fan-translations, as is the case with many Japanese VN’s. I have personally not read it and don’t know if I will now that there’s an official version, but I do know that there being at least the option to support the actual developers without having to learn Japanese, can only be a good thing.
