New Format Announced for Blizzard CCG Hearthstone

Posted on February 2, 2016 by Broken Joysticks

New Format Hearthstone

Hearthstone lead designer Ben Brode has taken to youtube to announce a new format for Hearthstone. The format is called Standard, and will encompass all card sets released in the most recent two years. At the start of each year, card sets older than two years will rotate out of the game as the first expansion of the year gets added. Cards from the basic and expert sets are excepted from this rotation and will stay in Standard forever.  Since these shifts will be an annual thing, Blizzard is tying them to what it calls “The Hearthstone Zodiac”, dubbing this first year of standard “The year of the Kraken”. Players will still be able to play in a format with all cards available, which was the only format available up until this point. This format has now been redubbed “Wild”. Check out the announcement video below the jump.Read More

Upcoming Dragon Ball RPG for 3DS, Dragon Ball: Project Fusion

Posted on January 18, 2016 by Broken Joysticks

Some news from 2chan.net , a popular Japanese image board, there seems to be a new Dragon Ball 3DS RPG on the horizon!
Namely Dragon Ball:Project Fusion. The images show Broly and Goku at the end pose of a fusion dance, so where this could go is anyone’s guess.
As far as I can tell the main focus of the game will of course be on various fusions, likely one’s we’ve yet to see.

Honestly, it looks pretty cool. Dragon Ball fans are certainly no stranger to Dragon Ball “what if” stories, and this will probably be no different.
There’s not a whole lot that has been leaked as of yet. They did detail on 2016 release in Japan. No information yet as to the price.

Underrail: A First Look

Posted on December 31, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

Where do I start with Underrail?
No, really, where do i start? not just the review,  but in the game itself? At first the game seems very streamlined, but I found myself lost even in the initial quest, even if it was largely due to my own mistakes. I first went into the railway system, finding death at every turn, wasting a full five hours before encountering the correct path back, where I started at the elevator, heading back in, to find the Cave system I was intended to explore.

Developers of the XCOM ‘Long War’ mod form a new studio

Posted on December 29, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

Today the developers of the popular XCOM mod Long War have announced their forming of a new game development studio, Long War Studios.
Their first title to be released under this new endeavor goes by the name Terra Invicta.

As detailed on the popular gaming forum NeoGaf, the project is stated as being “a grand strategy game in which the player leads the defense of Earth during an alien invasion”. “In pre-Kickstarter development”.
As for the story it certainly lifts some thematic tones from the XCOM series such as aliens and general earth defense. At the same time the description hints at a more in depth, larger scale and more expansive game altogether than XCOM’s squad based classic.

The description is as follows:

“An alien force has arrived in the far reaches of Solar System and begun probing Earth’s defenses and building an invasion fleet. The player must assemble a council of scientists, politicians, military leaders and operatives who can unite Earth’s squabbling nations with the ultimate goal of taking the fight to the aliens in the high ground of outer space.”

You can check out the new studio’s site here and the NeoGaf thread here.

New Logo Kojima Productions Revealed

Posted on December 16, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

Kojima Productions, the new studio founded by industry legend Hideo Kojima, has released their new logo. Many have already pointed out the logo bears a striking resemblance to the “soldiers without borders” logo Big Boss adopts after he goes solo, which is fitting considering the original logo Kojima worked under Konami was the same Big Boss used when he was still a part of Fox unit. Kojima Production is now working with Sony on a Playstation exclusive title. Check out the new logo below.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Details Revealed in Famitsu

Posted on December 15, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

Final Fantasy VII remake

The new issue of Famitsu, the famous Japanese gaming magazine, has revealed new info about the Final Fantasy VII remake. Most notably, the game will have more focus on Biggs, Wedge, and Jesse, as well as a fully explorable Midgar.

Square has been slowly dripping out info regarding the remake of the classic game, and not all of it has been received positively. In recent gameplay footage, the new battle system was revealed which does away with much of the turn-based elements of the original game in favour of a system resembling that of the FF XIII series. There has of course also been the decision to split up the game into “episodes”, which will be sold separately. There has been no word on how many of these episodes there will be.

It’s hard not to be sceptical of the Final Fantasy VII remake considering what a terrible, terrible, terrible company Square Enix has become. Seemingly second only to Konami in how disconnected it is from the fanbase that still tries its best to support it. Having said that, I don’t think the decision to radically change some of the content from the original game is a bad one. If you want to justify selling this thing for more than 60 dollars, splitting it up into multiple parts, you better have some new content to justify it. Give me more of the city to explore, give me cyberpunk chocobo races, GIVE ME MORE DRESSES TO PUT CLOUD IN GODDAMMIT

*Coughs*

The point is, if Square Enix is going to get away with charging multiple times for a remake, it does need to add new content. Now of course, that is no guarantee that the new content will be good. This is modern Square Enix after all, but I really can’t fault them for trying to take the game in a new direction, especially since a port of the game has already been made available on the PS4 earlier this month for 15 bucks. It is already perfectly possible for folks to play the original game on modern consoles, so to justify the price tag, Square will have to do something radical. Let’s just hope that this new direction doesn’t turn out to be as bad as the previous six “new directions” Square Enix has tried over the past decade.

First Gameplay Footage of Yakuza 6 Released

Posted on December 12, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

Yakuza 6

Yakuza 6 has just had it’s very first gameplay footage revealed. Check it out below.

[youtube id=sw6Oe1l51pQ]

Yakuza is just one of those franchises I never got into, with me only owning a PS3 for about a year before it broke. Still, what people tell me about it sounds kind of neat. There’s very little to be said about the footage, since it’s mostly just fighting animations, but it looks pretty crisp. Apparently the Yakuza are also professional wrestlers, judging from the way they fight. I look forward to dispensing The People’s Elbow to gangsters across Tokyo. Yakuza 6 is hitting the PS4 as an exclusive sometime in 2016.

Why Undertale dominating the gamefaqs poll means something

Posted on December 10, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

Undertale Gamefaq

I like Undertale. I like it a lot, and I don’t seem to be the only one. As of the time of writing this article, Undertale has just beaten out Pokemon Red/Blue and secured itself a spot in the quarter finals of gamefaq’s contest to determine the “Best. Game. Ever.”. This contest is a pretty big deal, with the last one being held in 2009 (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time) and the one before that in 2004 (Final Fantasy VII). It attracts a lot of people to the website who all want their favorite to win. This is even mentioned in the description of the contest itself.

“It’s all a big popularity contest, and visitors who have never visited GameFAQs before will be sure to stop in and vote.”

“Will outside forces rally around an upstart, or will they not care enough to bother?”

Gamefaq has always encouraged people who don’t usually visit the site to come and vote for which game they think deserves to win, and why wouldn’t the site? This kind of contest can bring in a huge amount of traffic that otherwise wouldn’t visit. It doesn’t even require you to register an account. Anyone that stumbles onto the front page can vote for whatever contest is going on at that point in time. They could not be making it any easier for non-forum users to join in on the conversation.

Yet it seems that not everybody is pleased with how this year’s competition is going. You see, nobody was actually expecting Undertale to do particularly well. In the first round it was matched up against Mass Effect 3, a game that has had a mixed reaction by the general gaming public but is a title with far more name recognition behind it. As expected, Undertale quickly fell behind in the polls. Undertale didn’t lose however. Through the use of platforms such as twitter and tumblr, those who enjoyed the game encouraged each other to vote for it, and in the end Mass Effect 3 had to surrender its chance for the win to Undertale.

From this point onward Undertale had a steady fan base willing to vote for it during its rounds, to the….displeasure of some of the regular visitors of gamefaqs. Topics were created, rally cries were had, and slurs were thrown around with reckless abandon all in the name of stopping this tyrannical force that was corrupting the results of the holy contest. The main argument seemed to be that the people pushing for Undertale were an outside force that shouldn’t be counted, which is strange because, as shown earlier, outside forces rallying for votes are encouraged on the very page explaining the contest.welp

The reason Undertale winning the contest wasn’t acceptable wasn’t because it wasn’t being voted for primarily by forum regulars. The reason it shouldn’t win, was because it was one of those games. You know the ones I am talking about. One of those fancy pants artsy games about feelings that get made by girls with brightly colored hair in their basements when they aren’t colluding with the UN to destroy videogames. Ironically some of the hyperbole going around on the forums ended up being so hilarious that it started being passed around on social media, creating even more awareness for the game. My favorite one had to be a thread demanding that Undertale creator Toby Fox, who as far as I know has not involved himself in the contest or tried to rally support for his game in any way, go out and tell the fans of his game to stop voting for it. Because ethics.

But while the situation is absolutely hilarious, the reason Undertale’s continuing success is significant is not the massive amounts of salt being produced. The Undertale contest represents something important. It represents a situation in which people can vote anonymously and give voice to their opinions without having to worry about being charged out. There is no way to stop these supporters from casting their vote, no way to chase them out, no way to make clear to them that this is an environment that doesn’t appreciate these kind of opinions. It is a way for a very large group that often stays silent so as not to be harassed and yelled at to assert their presence in a way that is visible.

The reason for Undertale’s surprising domination of the polls is two-fold: Firstly it is an excellent game that was enjoyed by a large number of people, but that goes for most of the games participating in the competition. The second reason Undertale is doing so well is because it is represented by a group that often feels unwelcome in forums such as those on gamefaqs website. A group that is incredibly passionate about gaming and its continued evolution as a medium and art. By being able to vote in the competition without risk, these folk are allowed to show that they do indeed exist in great number. Apparently even greater number than those that believe Pokemon is the better game.

But I don’t want to end this article gloating. As I said at the start, I like Undertale, and that no doubt colours my opinion of the entire situation. I will be cheering for it to win, but if you feel another game is more deserving of the top spot, vote for it! If your friends feel the same way, ask them to vote for it too. Don’t get angry at people for liking a game you don’t think is all that great, but celebrate the games you love. After all, that’s what the people who are voting for Undertale are doing. Embrace the love you and them both share for gaming. A love that runs so deep you’re both willing to take time out of your day to go vote on a silly internet poll that, let’s be honest, doesn’t really matter anyway. The people that care enough to vote for Undertale have already proven they care about gaming by casting their vote. Instead of talking about what game shouldn’t win, let’s do what this contest is really supposed to be about and celebrate our own favorite games. Maybe enough people will agree with you that your favorite suddenly finds itself dominating the polls. There have been some strange upsets this year after all.
