Check Out The First Hour of Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s World of Light

Posted on December 7, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Today is the release of Super Smash Bros Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch! The last major release from Nintendo for the year crams in every playable character from previous entries of Smash, a roster of new challengers like Simon Belmont (Castlevania), K-Rool and most importantly an all-new single-player experience called The World of Light. Long time Smash fans might remember that after the cutscenes for Brawl were posted online before release, Project SORA decided to omit a traditional single-player campaign from Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS.

2018’s Ultimate marks the return of Single Player and earlier today Kelesti and I streamed the first hour of The World of Light on Twitch. Watch below as we guide the happiest puffball, Kirby, through the opening of this epic quest.  Reportedly WOL takes approximately between 20 – 30 hours to complete – and of course, you can unlock a good chunk of the 70+ fighters by completing the single-player campaign. WOL also included RPG elements in the form of “spirits” which can be upgraded and grant the player unique bonuses. With spirits from across the various eras of Nintendo and all of the 3rd party games – there is a lot to collect.

E3 2018: All in: every fighter returning for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate; releasing in December

Posted on June 12, 2018 by Jason Nason

Nintendo opened its activities for E3 2018 with a smash. The anchor for the Nintendo Direct was new information about the upcoming Smash title, which has a name – Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Showing world-first footage of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Nintendo shared details about the latest entry in the series. A new game built for the Nintendo Switch system, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate lets up to eight players square off in action-packed battles that are all about smashing beloved video game characters off the screen.

“At E3, we’re showing how Nintendo Switch continues to redefine play, with the broadest range of games people can enjoy together anytime, anywhere,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO. “Fans who’ve debated which Super Smash Bros. fighter is the best now have the chance to settle their differences once and for all, pitting familiar faces against fresh challengers on stages both new and old.”

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will include every single fighter ever featured in the series’ nearly two-decade run, making it one of the biggest crossover events in gaming history. Fans can enjoy returning favorites like Ice Climbers and Pokémon Trainer, as well as newly announced fighters like Ridley from the Metroid series and Inkling from the Splatoon series. The game supports a variety of controller options, including Nintendo GameCube controllers (original or newly designed), Joy-Con controllers or the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. With Nintendo Switch, players can throw down whenever and wherever they like in Handheld or Tabletop mode while enjoying online play.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate combines many stages and new items, with gameplay that makes it easy for players of all skill levels to jump in. All current Super Smash Bros. series amiibo figures are compatible with the game, and any fighter’s amiibo figure from other series will also be supported.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is set to launch on December 7th, exclusively for Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo’s E3 2018 Plans Include Splatoon 2 World Championship, Smash Bros and More

Posted on April 30, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

With six weeks until the kickoff of E3 2018 Nintendo has provided an outline of what exactly fans can expect during the show. For those that can make it to Los Angeles and have the credentials (or cash) for a pass – that means a chance to go hands-on with the newly announced Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch as well as a selection of 3rd party titles. As in prior years, Nintendo will also be hosting a sponsored tournament – this year it’s the Splatoon 2 World Invitation – and of course the now traditional Nintendo Direct E3 presentation.

Nintendo’s first competitive showcase will be the Splatoon 2 World Invitation which will take place on Monday June 11th from 3PM – 6PM PST. If you’ve already checked out Nintendo’s official E3 website, yes the artwork for the Splatoon 2 World Invitation looks to be directly inspired by the 1990s Nintendo World Championship. Will winners receive a golden commemorative GameCard that will retail for thousands of dollars on eBay?

Right after the Splatoon festivities end on June 12th is the gameplay debut of the brand new Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch (which we still don’t know the final name of). Alongside professional players, fans will also be given the chance to play the new brawler thanks to a sponsored cosplay competition that the Big N is throwing. No further details yet on what exactly will be playable for Smash Bros how folks can enter the cosplay contest – so be on the look out for those details.

As is usual, on Tuesday June 12th the E3 2018 Nintendo Direct video presentation will take place at 9 AM PST. Whatever surprises that the creators of Mario have in store for us will remain a mystery up until the broadcast itself but they have mentioned that they will be focusing on already announced games. Nintendo will also only focus on titles that will be released in 2018 – so no teases for what is to come in 2019!

Possible Games

  • Yoshi (Name not known)
  • Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch
  • Octopath Traveler (Square Enix)
  • Travis Strikes Again (Grasshopper Manufacture)
  • Super Meat Boy Forever
  • Untitled Fire Emblem for Nintendo Switch (Intelligent Systems)

So to recap – here is a shortlist of important dates for E3 2018 when it comes to Nintendo:

Splatoon 2 World Inivational – June 11th and 12th
Super Smash Bros Tournament – June 12th
Treehouse Live! – June 12th – 15th
Nintendo Direct E3 Presentation – June 12th @ 9 AM PST

Nintendo hosting Super Smash Bros. Invitational, Splatoon 2 World Championship at E3

Posted on March 28, 2018 by Jason Nason

While we don’t know when we’re going to learn more details about the upcoming Switch iteration of Super Smash Bros., we know for sure that we’ll see the game in action at E3.

On June 11-12 in Los Angeles, an invited group of players will gather to play Super Smash Bros. as Nintendo hosts an event featuring gameplay for the upcoming Nintendo Switch title. This will be the first-ever exhibition tournament featuring the recently announced Super Smash Bros. game coming to Nintendo Switch in 2018.

Qualified teams will also compete in the first world championship for Splatoon 2 since the game’s launch.

Both competitions will be livestreamed.

The event will be just one of Nintendo’s activities at the E3 video game trade show, which runs June 12th – 14th. Additional details about Nintendo’s E3 plans aren’t yet known.

Prior to the Splatoon 2 World Championship, Nintendo will host U.S./Canada online qualifiers. The U.S./Canada qualifier will be the Splatoon 2 U.S./Canada Inkling Open 2018 hosted by Battlefy. Open qualifiers for teams of four ages 13 and up will take place on April 21 starting at 2pm ET, and finals will take place on April 28 at 11am ET. Teams will compete in Turf War during the open qualifiers and in Ranked Battle modes during the finals.

Players can learn more about the qualifiers at https://e3.nintendo.com/splatoon-2-inkling-open/.

“Nintendo always takes an original approach to video game competitions, and the portability of Nintendo Switch enables unique gameplay possibilities,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We’re looking forward to watching some of the best players in the world test their skills against each other in these two uniquely competitive games.”

Super Smash Bros. coming to Nintendo Switch in 2018

Posted on March 8, 2018 by Jason Nason

Nintendo released a ton of new information during their latest Nintendo Direct, which we’ll break down more soon. The big suprise reveal is that a Super Smash Bros. game is in the works for Nintendo’s latest console.

The reveal came in the form of a trailer at the end of the presentation, which was a surprise because it was previously stated that the Wii U / 3DS games in 2014 would be the last in the series. But who believed that?

The teaser trailer doesn’t really give any details on if the game is brand new or a remake of the Wii U title, but it’s safe to say that it will likely be a brand new entry in the beloved series. I’m personally excited for the lead up to the game as the highlight of the last game was the release of countless character reveal trailers in the months leading up to the release of the games.

Enjoy the trailer below.

During its latest Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo announced that the Super Smash Bros. franchise is coming to Nintendo Switch this year. The video also showcased more than a dozen upcoming games for both the Nintendo Switch system and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems, with many of the featured games coming from third-party developers, including SQUARE ENIX, Capcom, Grasshopper Manufacture, From Software and Ubisoft.

“Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS are being propelled through 2018 with an energized lineup of games of all kinds,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “These games contain a solid mix of first-party franchises starring some of Nintendo’s most recognizable characters, acclaimed third-party titles and promising indies.”

We’ll go into a more in depth look at some of these games in the near future, but for now check out some of the details of the news in Nintendo’s release below. You can also watch the Nintendo Direct video in its entirety below.

Some of the highlights revealed in the video include:

Bayonetta and Corrin Launch into Smash on Wednesday

Posted on January 31, 2016 by Jason Nason

Bayonetta and Corrin, the final two DLC fighters for Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, will finally be available on Wednesday, February 3rd.

Corrin hails from Nintendo’s upcoming 3DS game Fire Emblem Fates. Just like Wii Fit Trainer, Robin and the Villager, players can choose to play as a male or female version of the character. Corrin has the blood of a dragon in his veins, allowing him to transform and pull off attacks like no other fighter.

Bayonetta, whose Wii U exclusive title Bayonetta 2 is getting a solo release on February 19th, joins Smash as well. Her addition is the result of the worldwide Fighter Ballot. Just like in her action games, Bayonetta is a combo fighter in Super Smash Bros., chaining different kinds of attacks together. Her signature move is Witch Time, which slows down opponents if they are within range.

Bayonetta will come with a brand new stage as well, which is called Umbra Clock Tower and is filled with moving platforms and even an alternate world. Both the fighter and stage are available for both Wii U and 3DS.

Nintendo Dampening Expectations For This Most Recent Direct Was the Right Move

Posted on November 12, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Nintendo’s decision to post a notice on the Nintendo Direct official website outlining that they had no plans to discuss the NX or Mobile during today’s broadcast was absolutely the right move. Usually dampening your fan bases expectation for such a high profile event like the return of Nintendo Directs would be a bad thing but I feel that it helped Nintendo focus solely on the message that the Wii U and 3DS have a lot of life left in them heading into next year.  Read More

Super Smash Bros. Fastest Selling Wii U Title to Date

Posted on November 26, 2014 by Jason Nason

Nintendo announced some sales figures for Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U yesterday and the numbers are looking good.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is now the fastest-selling Wii U title ever in the U.S. market, beating out previous title Mario Kart 8, with more than 490,000 physical and digital units combined sold during the three-day period of November 21st through November 23rd.

The game has been a hit with critics as well and Smash currently has a Metacritic score of 92. Fan reaction to the game has been overwhelmingly positive as well. The news isn’t surprising as the game has been highly anticipated, especially since the last game in the series was released six years ago. The series has sold more than 14 million games to date in the United States and this new success is great news for Nintendo.

Posted on October 22, 2014 by Rae Michelle Richards

Are your thumbs still sore from smashing your opponents off screen? The Big N has a Nintendo Direct live stream set for Thurs October 23rd at 3PM PST to announce some new features for the Wii U version of Nintendo’s cross-franchise brawler.   We’re not sure what they’re going to announce, a console exclusive level based upon the hit Doshin the Giant games, perhaps? (an obscure game I know.. look it up!)

The 3DS version has done fantastically well, selling over 2.8 million copies worldwide in just a few short weeks. There is a reason Jason awarded the game a perfect 10.0 in his review!

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS | REVIEW

Posted on October 5, 2014 by Jason Nason

I’ll admit it’s been a while since I’ve played a Super Smash Bros game. In fact, you would almost consider me a new player to the series. It’s been that long. And while I got on board early and played the original game on my Nintendo 64 way back in the day, I never got around to getting (or playing) either Brawl or Melee on the Gamecube or Wii.

Yeah. That long.

I still remember a day when you only had a small handful of characters to choose from and a small smattering of arenas in which to battle. The number of arenas in the new Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, and the characters you have to choose from when you start the game, is massive. And varied.
