Yakuza Kiwami | Review

Posted on August 30, 2017 by Broken Joysticks

Game Reviewed By: John Bridgman

“Kiwami means extreme!” the tutorial explains, and that’s a good way, to sum up Yakuza Kiwami, the remake of Sega’s first entry in its open-world Yakuza series. It keeps the series’ proud tradition of bombastic martial arts combat, gritty organized crime drama, and ridiculous diversions.

An immediate warning to prospective players is in order – Yakuza Kiwami has depictions of violence and aggressive harassment of women, both implied and on-screen, so keep that in mind before playing if you are affected by such things. As well, there are displays of intense gore and mutilation which can be upsetting.

Our protagonist is Kiryu Kazama, who is fresh out of prison after taking the fall for the murder of the Patriarch of the Dojima family. Paroled after ten years of model inmatehood, he returns to Kamurocho and finds himself pulled into a wildly changed Yakuza. Power struggles have broken out among the remaining Yakuza families, and caught up in the middle of it all is his childhood friend Nishkiyama who is now a family Patriarch himself, having gained a ruthless ambition in the wake of Kiryu taking the rap for his crimes.

With these pieces as a setting, Kiryu is let loose to discover the plots surrounding his loved ones, in the only way he knows how – violence. And Kiryu is extremely gifted at the liberal application of violence. He punches, kicks, stomps, throws, swings blades, and smashes thugs with bicycles and more throughout the city. Encounters crop up through the city as you run around, including the ever-looming specter of Kiryu’s rival, Goro Majima.

Majima Everywhere is one of the most fun parts of the game. He can pop up anywhere in the city with a sing-song “Kiryu-chaaan”, ready to challenge his stoic rival and test to see if Kiryu’s skills have grown to match his reputation as the Dragon of Dojima. These fights unlock Kiryu’s skills in his Dragon style, so in addition to normal leveling up, to truly master being Kiryu Kazama, you must engage with Majima.

The game hits some lulls when the narrative shrinks things down and removes the degree of openness the game has. Yakuza games shine when something ludicrous is happening on-screen, and searching for an item on the pavement isn’t particularly interesting, especially without the prospect of fighting anyone for a while. These segments aren’t difficult but if you have trouble finding what’s needed it really breaks the flow of the game.

When it’s open though you really get to experience the variety that Yakuza games have come to be known for. While traveling from plot to plot, you will find yourself distracted by fights, games, fights, sidequests, fights, bars, restaurants, and fights. Head to a bar and shoot some darts, have a drink, then make your way to karaoke – all of which will net you experience points and thus lead to improving Kiryu’s skills.

There is a very strange minigame I feel I have to discuss. In your travels, you will begin to find trading cards with pictures of ladies in swimsuits and bug hats. These you can then use to have weird rock-paper-scissors matches, complete with 3D modeled and animated wrestling holds between the scantily-clad women in an arena surrounded by bugs. It’s absolutely bizarre.

Combat though – oh the combat is where Yakuza Kiwami excels. Kiryu has an enormous variety of moves and combos to perform, which only gets more involved as you level up his skills. There are four styles to switch between, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, and knowing when to use which and when to switch is key to major fights. The Rush style is about fast combos and dodging rapidly, the Brawler style is the balanced option, and the Beast style is tanky and has an emphasis on breaking nearby objects over your opponents. The fourth style is Kiryu’s Dragon Style, which features unique and powerful abilities, but can only be trained by fighting against Majima.

Yakuza Kiwami is a game that manages to balance its bombastic, ridiculous, and grim elements very well. It can seamlessly carry you from winning dolls out of a crane game for a businessman to give to his… “daughter”, to kicking a road cone and knocking out a group of thugs, to smashing an assassin’s face against a wall with your fist in a span of minutes. It is extremely violent, extremely silly, extremely bizarre, and extremely fun if you can get past the uncomfortable elements. “Kiwami means extreme!” indeed.

Yauza Kiwami’s publisher SEGA USA provided us with a review code for our consideration.

Free DLC For Valkyria Revolution & Dark Rose Valkyrie To Help You Beat The Heat

Posted on July 28, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

What’s the best way to beat the summer heat? Surprisingly we’ve had two major RPG releases this season – Dark Rose Valkyrie and Valkyria Revolution and both games have a whole trove of free downloadable content on the PlayStation Store. When the thermometer breaks one of the best ways to pass the hot days is to immerse oneself in an RPG.

Fans of Idea Factory International’s recent RPG produced by development staff known for the ‘Tales of’ franchise, Dark Rose Valkyrie, can nab extra missions, a couple of costumes for party members and crafting resources.

Available Free DLC (Dark Rose Valkyrie)

  • Founding Commemoration Set
  • Special Boot Camp Set (x 3)
  • Special Provisioning Set (x 3)
  • Amusement Variety Set
  • Dark Heart Pounding Set
  • Dengeki Exciting Set

Perhaps visiting SEGA’s re imagining of the Valkyria series is more your style when it comes to summer time RPGs. SEGA has provided Amleth & Co with quite a few resource packs and special missions available through the PlayStation Store to aid them on their quest to free their home from the influence of the Ruzi Empire.

Available Free DLC (Valkyria Revolution)

  • Special Issue: Spinning Squall+
  • Special Issue: Veteran Pouch+
  • Special Issue: Smash Blaze+
  • Special Issue: Ragnite Shards
  • Special Issue: Burn Field+
  • Scenario Pack: Princess & Valkyria (extra missions)
  • Scenario Pack: Maxim & Remembrance (extra missions)
  • Scenario Pack: The Circle of Five
  • Scenario Pack: Vanguard Bundle (extra missions)

There you have it – two collections of DLC to extend your summer RPG experience and all of it is available for free. Let us know in the comments if you found this reminder post useful and I’ll try to highlight other low cost or free game add-ons in the future.

I have both Valkyria Revolution and Dark Rose Valkyrie loaded onto my PlayStation 4 and I am planning to delve deeper into my opinions on both later this summer, having just finished both an Elder Scrolls Online expansion and Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood – I need a bit of an RPG break before launching into another 50 hour+ quest.

Virtua Tennis Is The Next Dreamcast Game To Be Added to SEGA Forever

Posted on July 13, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

SEGA proves that it’s still thinking when it comes to adding Dreamcast games to their new SEGA Forever service with their latest announcement. Okay, Okay – silly references to long dead advertising slogans aside – players on Android and iOS will soon be able to hit the tennis court for free with the addition of Virtua Tennis Challenge to existing line-up.

Virtua Tennis Challenge is heavily based on the home console release of Virtua Tennis for Dreamcast from 2000 but has been modified to work within the restrictions of mobile devices. Featuring 18 different stadiums and a number of different tennis maneuvers such as the power shot – this mobile port provides enough content for hours of on the court action.

Previously priced at $4.99 USD, Virtua Tennis Challenge can be played for free with occasional ads or upgraded to the add free experience for just $1.99 USD. We’ve covered quite a few of SEGA’s recent re-releases and updates through SEGA Forever – which included a fantastic port of 2000’s Crazy Taxi by the way. No word on if all of the SEGA Forever titles will be updated to support 64-bit iOS versions, as Apple is de-listi32-bitbit applications this September with the debut of iOS 11.

An example of the Dreamcast’s memorable advertising.

Valkyria Revolution Storms Onto The PlayStation 4 Today

Posted on June 27, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

SEGA’s Valkria franchise hasn’t seen an original release in North America in 7 and a half years but the beloved cell-shaded franchise returns with the PlayStation 4 release of Valkyria Revolution on PS4, Vita and Xbox One today.

Eschewing the unique turn based / action focused combat system from the original titles in favor of full-on action RPG combat puts players right into the heart of the action without sacrificing the strategic elopements that helped make the Valkyria franchise a cult classic. Story-wise players will once again recruit a ragtag team of soldiers, this time helmed by Princess Ophellia and Captain Amleth Gronjaer as they defend the continent of Europa from the oncoming forces of the Ruzi Empire.

To celebrate the launch of Valkryia Revolution SEGA has several planned pieces of free DLC to expand the game. Including:

  • Special Issue Gear: Veteran’s Pouch – Grants a 10% EXP bonus
  • Spinning Squall – Special Ragnite used in battle
  • Burn Field + – Special Ragnite used in battle
  • 30 Ragnite Shards
  • Smash Blaze + – Special Ragnite used in battle.

All five pieces of DLC listed above are available now with three additional Scenario and Item Packs arriving in North America for free on July 5th, July 11th and July 18th. These additional packs include new quests, in the form of “tales”, more free ragnite shards and additional battle actions to expand your armies repertoire.  Sounds like Valkyria Revolution fans will have a lot of content to keep them busy during one of the hottest summer months.

Upcoming DLC for Valkyria Revolution includes:

  • Scenario Pack: The Vanguard (Available now)
  • Scenario Pack: The Circle of Five (July 5th)
  • Scenario Pack: The Princess and the Valkyria (July 11th)
  • Scenario Pack: Maxim and Remembrance (July 18th)

Reviews on the game have so far been mixed but I’m looking forward to checking it out. I’ve been a fan of the Valkria franchise since the 2009 North American release of the original game, I bought the digital version of Valkyria Chronicles 2 on Vita as soon as it was available and I’m still sad that VC3 never made it to the west. My limited edition arrived today and I was surprised to see that the first print-runs of Valkyria Chronicles included a bonus collector’s pin and a soundtrack sampler. Perhaps if Revolution is successful we will see future entries in the Valkria franchise and won’t have to wait another painful seven years.

A free Valkyria Revolution theme is also available via the PlayStation Network for PS4.

SEGA Forever Brings 5 Classic Titles To Mobile For Free

Posted on June 21, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

SEGA has announced the rumored SEGA Forever, a mobile-centric collection of classic titles spanning over 20 years of releases and three console generations.  With 5 SEGA exclusive Genesis titles available at launch – Sonic The Hedgehog, Comix Zone, Phantasy Star II, Altered Beast and Kid Chameleon – there’s quite a few different genres represented. SEGA Forever games support features like cloud saves, Bluetooth controllers, save states and offline play regardless of the player’s advertising status. As with the Crazy Taxi port released a couple of weeks ago – games in SEGA Forever collection will be supported by periodic in-game advertisements, however, these can be removed for $1.99 USD per title.

SEGA is promising to release more classic titles from the Master Drive, Genesis, Saturn and even 1999’s Dreamcast (a personal favorite) at some point down the line.  Players should expect new releases every two weeks or so but SEGA has not yet confirmed any future titles for the service.

Check out some media below and make sure to check the Google Play Store and Apple App Store for SEGA Forever when it launches tomorrow.

SEGA Releases A Free To Play Port of Crazy Taxi On iOS Devices

Posted on June 1, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH… Get ready to go back to 2000 with a re-release of the original Crazy Taxi on iOS. This arcade driving game hit the Dreamcast and arcade scene back in 1999 but like any classic, it’s always fun to revisit a vintage title from decades past from time to time.

Challenging players to pick up fares around a fictional version of San Francisco, drivers ignore all of the rules of the road as they try to get their customers to the destination before time expires.  The more reckless a player is the higher a fare they’ll collect. Bonus cash is awarded for narrowly passing an oncoming vehicle (called “Crazy Through”), jumping off well-placed ramps and getting the passenger to their destination while the timer is still green. Also included in this re-release is the original arcade ruleset where time is added for each successful passenger delivery but also the “5 Crazy Minutes”, “10 Crazy Minutes” and “Crazy Box” challenge missions that were added in the Dreamcast port as well.

This isn’t the first time Crazy Taxi has been ported to other platforms – it appeared on the PS2 in 2002 during SEGA’s early days as a 3rd party publisher. It was ported to the PlayStation Portable as Crazy Taxi Fare Wars in 2007 with support for custom soundtracks and even in-game recording with up to 80 seconds of video recorded.  Now players can get their hands on Crazy Taxi for free, as CT is available for free with in-game advertisements right now. Optionally you can pay the low price of $2.49 CDN and have the advertisements removed forever. The latest update even brings back the original 2000 soundtrack featuring The Offspring and Bad Religion (as good.. or as bad as that may be, depending on your tastes and how they’ve evolved in the subsequent 17 years.) Sadly the real world advertisements for Tower Records (RIP), Pizza Hut and KFC have all been removed, now you’ll just drive the customers to a “chicken restaurant” :(.

It’s a nice mobile treat to play such a throwback to the dying days of arcades – CT was one of the first (and last) arcade machines I’ve ever played (I was 13 when CT released). For those concerned that the touch controls might run the experience – they don’t. All the little tricks you might have picked up on the Dreamcast like Crazy Starts and the Rickshaw are still there.

Sonic Mania Confirmed For Release on August 15th For PS4, Xbox One, PC and Switch

Posted on May 30, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Sonic Mania finally has a release date after being delayed earlier this spring. Fans of rolling around at the speed of sound can pre-order Sonic Mania for PC, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch or PS4 through their system’s digital store for a suggested retail price of $25.99 Canadian (prices vary depending on region).

Originally revealed during the Sonic The Hedgehog 25th Anniversary Stream last winter, Sonic Mania is the first original 2D Sonic title since 2009’s Sonic Colors for the DS. Co-developed by Sonic Classics port master Christian Whitehead, HeadCannon, and PagodaWest Games, Sonic Mania reimagines classic zones while introducing powerful bosses and pixel perfect physics.

To celebrate the reveal of Mania’s release date SEGA has released a special animatic short featuring the three playable characters – Sonic, Tales and Knuckles. This short has quite a few hidden easter eggs: my favorite being the numbers/letters on the elevator. Is this SEGA acknowledging that Sonic 4 Episodes I & II are no longer considered canon?

Sonic Mania is available for digital pre-order right now but the game will release in a limited physical Collector’s Edition as well.

Vanquish Now Available On Steam

Posted on May 25, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Platinum Games’ hypermobile third person shooter  Vanquish is no longer contained to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with the release of a Windows PC port on Steam today.  Directed by Shinji Mikami of Resident Evil fame, the original version of Vanquish was released in October of 2010 and was received favorably at the time drawing comparisons to 2D bullet hell shooters.

Set in the near future players take the role of DARPA agent Sam Gideon who pilots a highly advanced Augmented Reaction Suit (ARS) which allows him to enter a bullet time like state when low on health. The AR suit also allows Sam to jet across the map using built-in thrusters and swap between 3 held weapons and two different kinds of grenade at any time. After a Russian space station causes a calamity that devastates the city of San Francisco, which causes DARPA to call in Sam to save key personal and shut down the space station weapon before it can wipe another city off the map.

Supporting features like 4K resolution and an unlimited this version of Vanquish accomplishes technical feats the original just could never do. It is currently priced at $24.99 CDN.

Posted on May 17, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

SEGA announced today that they will be making every early 2000s Sonic fan’s dream come true by allowing the creation of custom characters who will fight alongside the blue blur in the upcoming Sonic Forces.  These new characters will use a “third gameplay style” which combines the behind the camera fast paced motion of Modern Sonic with the 2D gameplay of Classic Sonic and the added twist of equipable gadgets.

Players will be able to select a number of different base animal forms for their original character, each with their own unique bonuses. Here are the ones that SEGA has announced thus far:

  • Wolf – Automatically draws in rings when near them
  • Rabbit – Has longer invincible time after receiving damage
  • Cat – Keeps one ring after being hit
  • Dog – Restarts with five rings after the player dies
  • Bear – Blows away enemies with a homing attack
  • Bird – Flies high with double jump abilities
  • Hedgehog – Collects rings when getting damaged

A brand new trailer released today showcases the number of options available for these OCs.

Here is some raw gameplay featuring a custom character:

Also released were some new screens centered around the player character:

Sonic Forces will be released later this year on Xbox One, PS4, PS4 Pro, Nintendo Switch and Windows PC.

Sonic Forces introduces new, third gameplay style

Posted on May 16, 2017 by Jason Nason

Today, SEGA revealed the third gameplay style in Sonic Forces is a powerful gadget touting customizable character. For the first time in the Sonic series, players can create their own original Hero Character, and customize how the character plays and how it looks. This newly revealed playstyle in Sonic Forces is in addition to the previously revealed fast-paced action of Modern Sonic and the thrilling platforming of Classic Sonic.

Players will be equipping their custom Hero Character with one of a variety of powerful unique gadgets called Wispons. Wispons are an evolution of the Color Powers from Sonic Colors and double as both offensive abilities and as a way to platform through levels quickly. Along with the Wispon, the Hero Character will have a grappling hook they can utilize to quickly traverse across zones. Players can also customize the Hero Character’s looks by choosing and swapping between hundreds of accessories and outfit options to change the character’s appearance as they play through the game.

There are seven base animal types that players can select from, each with varying special abilities:

  • Wolf – Automatically draws in rings when near them
  • Rabbit – Has longer invincible time after receiving damage
  • Cat – Keeps one ring after being hit
  • Dog – Restarts with five rings after the player dies
  • Bear – Blows away enemies with a homing attack
  • Bird – Flies high with double jump abilities
  • Hedgehog – Collects rings when getting damaged

The created character will also be a key part of the story, appearing not only in cut scenes, but by being a crucial element in the story.

Sonic Forces will be available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, & PC this holiday.
