Final Fantasy 7 Remake Heading To PS4

Posted on June 15, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Square Enix showcased a teaser trailer for the long awaited Final Fantasy 7 remake at Sony’s E3 2015 press conference. The teaser trailer talks about a world falling into ruin and a group of heroes returning. If that makes this title sound like a sequel, it’s not.. the crowd literally erupted in energetic applause that is hard to describe in words. This a game that people have waited almost 20 years to be remade

When the PlayStation 3 was announced in 2005 Square Enix showed off an impressive remake the train sequence from the original game and at the time it looked fantastic.

We know that the FF7 remake will be directed by Tetsuro Nomura and will be released in 2016 but no other details are currently available.

Sony Opens It’s Conference With Proof That The Last Guardian Is Real

Posted on June 15, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Sony took the opportunity to open it’s E3 2015 press conference with a nearly 7 minute demonstration of The Last Guardian. During the gameplay demo we see the giant dog-bird creature in all of its majesty cross platforms and make new areas accessible for the game’s child protagonist. The boy pushed and pull in-game object to try and make his way around the game’s environment – luckily just as trouble started brewing the dog-bird was there ready to save the day.

Earlier this week I posted an editorial about why you shouldn’t care about The Last Guardian but I can’t help but be caught up in the hype.

The Last Guardian will be coming to PlayStation 4 sometime in 2016. Check out the trailer below.

Backwards Compatibility Coming To Xbox One

Posted on June 15, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Xbox boss Phil Spencer announced this morning that the Xbox One will be able to play select Xbox 360 titles starting this fall.

Backwards compatibility has been a bit of a sore spot this generation, with the exception of the WiiU which offers complete compatibility with previous hardware neither the Xbox One nor PlayStation 4 have offered comprehensive solutions for gamers looking to enjoy some of their favorite classics. Sure Sony offers PlayStation Now but that service costs about $15 USD a month and unless you live in an area with reliable internet it is not a perfect solution.

Starting this Fall Xbox One owners will be able to play select Xbox 360 games via either physical disc or digital downloads. It was mentioned during the conference that over 100 games will be available at launch with more to come in 2016. Not only will Xbox one owners be able to play their favorite single player campaigns but also join friends on Xbox Live for competitive multiplayer and use Xbox One only features like Game DVR and screenshots while playing 360 games.

On stage Microsoft showed off Xbox 360’s Mass Effect running on the Xbox One. Check out a brief video of Xbox One Backwards Compatibility after the jump as well as a partial list of compatible titles.

Hyrule Warriors For Nintendo 3DS Leaks Ahead of E3

Posted on June 12, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

A trailer appeared on Tecmo Koei’s official YouTube channel that accidently went live ahead of Nintendo’s upcoming E3 press conference showcasing an unannounced 3DS port of last year’s Hyrule Warriors.

In addition to content found in the 2014 Wii U original version of Hyrule Warriors this new portable edition includes two new playable characters: The King of Red Lions and Tetra from The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker. Apparently the 3DS version also includes some sort of compatibility with Wii U version as well, I am uncertain of the specifics because the leaked trailer is entirely in Japanese.

Even though the original video has been de-listed from Tecmo Koei’s Youtube channel you can find mirrors of it all over the internet, one of which I’ve embedded below. Expect more details in the coming days!

Street Fighter V Battle Systems Explained

Posted on June 12, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Capcom’s upcoming fifth entry in the Street Fighter franchise is expected to have a huge presence at Sony’s E3 press conference thanks to the platform exclusivity agreement the two companies previously announced.

Before things kick off early next week Capcom has released a brand new “Battle Systems” trailer explaining some of the mechanics we can expect in Street Fighter V alongside a fresh batch of new screenshots. From the press release and trailer they’ve provided it seems like SFV feels a lot less like IV and more like the EX series.

Here are some of the new mechanics:

New Strategies and Battle Mechanics: Highly accessible new battle mechanics, which revolve around the V-Gauge and EX Gauge, provide an unprecedented layer of strategy and depth to the franchise that all players can enjoy.

V-Trigger: Unique abilities that use the entire V-Gauge, giving players the opportunity to inflict damage when activated.

V-Skill: Utility skills (such as evasion) for each character that can be activated at any time. o V-Reversal: Unique counterattacks that use one stock of the V-Gauge.

Critical Arts: Ultimate attacks that use the entire EX Gauge.

Honestly to me this feels like a cross between the “Ultimate” attacks that made Street Fighter IV so memorable and the nuanced EX Attacks that were introduced in the Street Fighter EX Series. I haven’t played Street Fighter V so obviously I don’t know how the game feels when you have a controller in your hands, but as you can see from the below media it sure is pretty.

Expect more on Street Fighter V as E3 rolls on all next week.Read More

Life Is Strange E3 Trailer

Posted on June 10, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Square Enix and developer Dontnod Entertainment have released a trailer for their episodic story-driven adventure game Life Is Strange.  This trailer features a brief look at some of the major events that have occurred during the last three episodes. A big warning though – alongside snippets of the critical acclaim that Life is Strange has received are major story spoilers for those who have not played the episodes released thus far.

I’ve played through all three episodes on PlayStation 4 and I absolutely fell in love with Life Is Strange by the end of the first episode. I found myself getting wrapped-up in the drama between the teenage cast – Dontnod spends a lot of time exploring the personalities and relationships between the various characters.  Episode 2 had such a major plot point that it sent me into tears and Episode 3 ended on such a surprise cliff hanger that it left me wanting more.

Without spoiling things you should check out Life Is Strange. Check out the trailer below.

Is it Possible To Care About The Last Guardian After a 6 Yr Absence?

Posted on June 9, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Rumors abound about the possibility of The Last Guardian making an appearance at Sony’s upcoming E3 press conference and all I have to ask is: Does anyone really care about this title anymore?  Even if Sony were to re-reveal the long dormant game can any showing live to the expectations that longtime fans have built up throughout all of the vaporware memes and denials of cancellations?Read More

The Next Destiny Expansion Is ‘The Taken King’

Posted on June 9, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Destiny players looking for details on the next downloadable expansion for Bungie’s latest shooter don’t have to wait any longer as the marketing materials for this Fall’s The Taken King have leaked. I am fully expecting this new expansion to be demoed on stage at Sony’s press conference next week at E3.

According to Kotaku The Taken King will be priced at $40 and will include new sub-classes for each of the existing three classes, a brand new raid pitting parties of guardians against a new foe called Oryx, new PVP arenas, new story missions and a brand new public event.

A previous Destiny roadmap that leaked in January outlined The Taken King (previously known under the codename ‘Comet’) as including 12 story missions, 1 raid, 3 strikes and a new “base level” of 30.

It is unknown if any of the planned content from the Comet leak have been tweaked in the past six months. Hopefully we will all get our first look at The Taken King in just a few short days.

My Nintendo Wishlist for E3

Posted on May 31, 2015 by Jason Nason

The last few years haven’t been the most overwhelming for longtime Nintendo fans, and have been somewhat underwhelming. I think that what has left me disappointed has been the lack of big announcements as well as announcements of games with no release date. Sure it’s great to know that a new Zelda game is in the works, but knowing that I’m going to have to wait a year or more for the game isn’t exciting. It’s a tease.

That’s why I’m hoping that Nintendo brings their cards to E3 this year and lays down an exciting hand. There is a lot they have to work with, haven’t announced anything huge in a while and there is a lot to loook forward to. In theory.

Bethesda Releases Brief Doom Teaser Trailer

Posted on May 18, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Bethesda Game Studios in collaboration with id Software have released a very brief 15 second gameplay trailer to promote their upcoming Doom reboot. The trailer promises that we will get more information at Bethesda’s E3 Press conference on June 14th.

Gameplay for Doom was first shown to the public at last year’s QuakeCon but the publisher did not allow anyone to record what was shown. According to reports the game goes back to its early 90s FPS roots complete with strafing, jetpacks and of course the awesomely overpowered B.F.G 9000. Apparently the developers have also incorporated finishing moves into some enemy encounters. The player is able to eviscerate their opponent by ripping off their jaw, tearing out their heart and other gruesome fatalities.

No release date for Doom has been given but considering it is getting a large presence at Bethesda’s E3 press conference a late 2015 / early 2016release date isn’t out of the question. Doom will be available on Windows PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Nintendo Unveils their E3 Plans

Posted on April 29, 2014 by Jason Nason

Nintendo will be tweeking the way they present their news and game at this year’s E3 event. Last year the company broke away from the traditional press presentation in an auditorium in favour of a Nintendo Direct video presentation.

This year Nintendo will deliver their news including a new format for unveiling news: the Nintendo Digital Event; a Super Smash Bros. tournament; a full slate of live, in-depth game demos from the Nintendo booth.

“We demonstrated last year that we are never afraid to reinvent a proven tactic or to break completely new ground if we believe it will provide the best experience for our fans, followers and partners,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s president and chief operating officer. “So, whether you’re attending E3 in person or joining online, there’s an amazing lineup of games, experiences and events coming your way.”

The overall theme of Nintendo’s E3 will be “Play Nintendo.”
