With the year coming to an end and game of the year awards being bestowed upon some of the biggest games of the year on other outlets, I’d like to take a few moments to share some of the best gaming moments I’ve experienced these past twelve months. We’re all about being different here at Broken Joysticks so instead of a series of GOTY choices here is one of the four games that left an impression on me.
Let’s kick things off with one of the best action titles of this year, the story of a bond formed between two unlikely protagonists Joel & Ellie as they attempt to survive a post-apocalyptic version of the United States. Yup, it is time to honor Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us…. (more…)Posted in: Editorial, Sony Tags: Best of 2013, Editorial, Opinion, PS3, sony, the last of us

Rosalina, who was introduced in the wildly enjoyable Super Mario Galaxy games for Wii, will be a playable character, accompanied by her starry friend, Luma when Super Smash Bros. launches on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS in 2014. Not only that but she will also be playable in Mario Kart 8.
I am personally thrilled at the addition and am glad that Nintendo keeps revealling new playable characters for Super Smash Bros. There can never be enough characters to battle it out with and I am also hoping that there are plans to release even more as DLC after the games release. I don’t care if they are paid or free add on characters. The more the better!
New playable characters in Mario Kart 8 include Rosalina as well as various “Baby” Nintendo characters, like Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Peach and Baby Daisy. New course settings shown in a new gameplay video include an airport, the desert and high in the clouds, and vehicles including UFOs, four-wheel ATV buggies, standard karts as well as bikes.Posted in: Nintendo Tags: Mario Kart 8, Nintendo, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Wii U, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros
Nintendo is continuing The Year of Luigi with another title featuring everyone’s favourite brother. Nintendo is following up the WiiWare title Dr. Mario with a new game in the Wii U eShop in Dr. Luigi.
Much like in the previous game, players will be challenged to line up color-coded pills to destroy viruses. Unlike in the previous game where you were given small two-tone pills, the capsules in Dr. Luigi are, of course, L-shaped. In the last game during multiplayer when you chained a combo by clearing pills you would send “junk” into your opponents screen. This time the game will actually randomize your opponents next capsule at the last second, forcing them to make some last minute changes.
The game will come with a Dr. Mario mode, Wii U GamePad compatibility and online play. Dr. Luigi launches exclusively in the Nintendo Wii U eShop on December 31st for $14.99.Posted in: Nintendo Tags: Club Nintendo, Dr. Luigi, Dr. Mario, Luigi, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Nintendo, Nintendo Wii U
What do you get when you put Link in the middle of the original Donkey Kong? What if you take a level of the original Super Mario Bros. and play it in shadows? Or how about flipping the level so that you run to the left? That’s the idea behind NES Remix, a new downloadable title on the Wii U eShop which takes sixteen classic NES games and gives you a whole new experience.
Select parts from 16 classic NES games have been remixed with new challenges. Get Mario to the goal pole while the level blinks out. Defeat an enemy within a certain time limit. Play a level of Excitebike and knock over a specific number of rivals. It’s amazing how something so small and seeminly simple in concept can be such an exciting idea.
NES Remix also includes Miiverse compatibility, so players can share their level times and collect 8-bit stamps. NES Remix is now available in the Nintendo Wii U eShop for $14.99.Posted in: Nintendo Tags: NES Remix, Nintendo, Nintendo Wii U
Not too long ago Nintendo announced that Cranky Kong would join Diddy and Dixie as playable companion characters for Donkey Kong in the Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Many seemed to be somewhat underwhelmed when that was the only news that Nintendo let slip at the VGX Awards, but when is the news of a new playable character not great news for an established franchise? Potential new characters for Super Smash Bros. are always top of mind for many people so this news was good news.
Cranky Kong has been around as a background character since the beginning and now that he is getting into the fray he brings with his own set of special moves that allow him to bounce off enemies and obstacles using his cane. Not only that but a new feature in the game allows players, who collect 100 bananas in a stage, to execute a new move called the KONG-Pow, which turns all enemies on the screen into items.Posted in: Nintendo Tags: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Nintendo, Nintendo Wii U
Bravely Default is arguably the most anticipated Nintendo 3DS title in quite a while. The game was released more than a year ago in Japan by Square Enix and since them fans of RPGs and Square Enix have been clamoring for a Western release. So when Nintendo announced a while ago that the game was coming out in North Amwerica it’s safe to say that people were thrilled.
Today Nintendo announced that not only will the game finally launch in North America in stores and in the Nintendo eShop on February 7th, but an exclusive demo will be released in the eShop on January 2nd. BUT the demo won’t just be a demo, but will be an exclusive story with hours of content not included in the main game in which Tiz and his allies work towards the restoration of Norentae village. You can also receive item packs which can be transferred to the full version of the game when it’s released along with up to twenty StreetPass tags and any friends registered in the demo.Posted in: Nintendo Tags: Bravely Default, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, Eshop, Nintendo, Nintendo 3DS, Square Enix
