Netflix support for Wii to end in 2019

Posted on November 12, 2018 by Jason Nason

With the YouTube app just being released this week for the Nintendo Switch also comes the news that Netflix service will be ending for the Nintendo Wii in 2019.

As first reported on Reddit from a Netflix email, Wii will no longer be supported for Netflix. Unfortunately, Nintendo will suspend all video streaming services on Wii – including the Netflix Channel – after January 30th, 2019.

The Netflix website no longer lists the Wii (or the Wii U) as a suported device and only shows the Nintendo 3DS as a Nintendo platform for Netflix.

However the email posted on Reddit also states “We hope you’ll soon enjoy an even better Netflix experience with additional features on a supported device.” This could be a hint that a Switch release is on the way.

Netflix for Nintendo 3DS was released on July 14th, 2011 while for the Nintendo Wii U was released on November 18th, 2012.

Adding Wii Points to Wii Shop Channel ended today

Posted on March 26, 2018 by Jason Nason

As of today, it is no longer possible to add points to the Wii Shop Channel using either a credit card or Nintendo Points Card. Any points added before that date can be used to purchase content on the Wii Shop Channel until January 30, 2019.

On January 30th, 2019, Nintendo will close the Wii Shop Channel, which has been available on Wii systems since December 2006.

Now that customers have shifted to Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo plans to focus their efforts in those areas. It should be noted that content downloaded on the Wii Shop Channel can be transferred to a Wii U system using the Wii System Transfer Tool.

In the future, Nintendo will be closing all services related to the Wii Shop Channel, including redownloading purchased WiiWare, Virtual Console titles, and Wii Channel, as well as Wii System Transfer Tool, which transfers data from Wii to the Wii U system.

After January 30th, 2019 it will no longer be possible to purchase content from the Wii Shop Channel. Refunds of Wii Points are not possible and it should also be noted that Wii Points cannot be used to fund a Nintendo eShop account or Nintendo Account.

If you have Wii Points to spend, content you want to re-download, or content you’d like to transfer from a Wii system to a Wii U system, it is recommended you do so while the services are still available.

Posted on September 30, 2017 by Jason Nason

Nintendo announced on Friday that they are planning to shut down the Wii Shop Channel in just over a year.

YouTube service for Nintendo Wii has ended

Posted on July 14, 2017 by Jason Nason

As of June 28th, 2017 the YouTube app for the Nintendo Wii no longer functions.

The termination of the app isn’t entirely unsurprising considering that the Wii is now two generations old, however with the massive saturation of the console in the marketplace it is somewhat disappointing. The end for support of the app comes as part of a larger initiative by YouTube to phase out its availability on older devices. The move is also likely partially determined based on usage of the Wii app, which has likely declined with the introduction of the Wii U and Nintendo Switch, as well as the large number of other mobile devices which can play and cast the service to television screens.

“We appreciate your support of this application on the Wii console over the years,” reads a statement from Nintendo.

YouTube functionality will continue on the Wii U console and Nintendo 3DS family systems.

CHARTED: Week Ending January 4, 2014

Posted on January 18, 2014 by Jason Nason

Previously I’ve been looking just at Nintendo’s titles in the top thirty to see where they stack, but this time I’m going to instead take a look at just the top ten games for both the USA and Japan.

It’s amazing to see the differences in the top tens between the two territories. There is only one game from Nintendo systems in the top ten in the United States for the week ending January 5th, 2014, with the title being Pokémon X/Y for the 3DS. The highest ranked Wii U game is actually Super Mario 3D World, which landed on the chart at 16. Interestingly enough Ubisoft’s Just Dance 2014 for the Wii landed at number 6.

Taking a look at the Japan top ten we see a different story, with games from Nintendo systems taking up eight of the top ten spots. Only Square Enix’s recently released Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster on PS3 and PS Vita could crack into the top ten.

Take a look at the full top ten rankings for the USA and Japan.
