LEGO The Hobbit Officially Announced

Posted on November 25, 2013 by Joshua Rust

Traveller’s Tales, creator of the fantastic LEGO games, has announced today a new LEGO game based off a popular book series that you may have heard of…LEGO The Hobbit. While some may see these as kids games, I’ll have to give TT credit because the last few games (LEGO Batman 2, LEGO Marvel, LEGO Lord of the Rings), have been exceptionally fun – yes, even for a “kids game”.

Atlus Announces Persona 5

Posted on November 24, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Atlus has released a very cryptic trailer for the newest entry in their Shin Megami Tensei franchise, the highly anticipated Persona 5. A very brief trailer was posted online today, which reveals little about the title. In the less than minute long trailer we see five chairs fade into existence against a red backdrop. The only readable text (for those not fluent in Japanese) teases us about being slaves and craving emancipation – honestly we are just as confused you are at this point.

Persona 5 is currently in development and is scheduled to release sometime in 2014 for the PlayStation 3 in Japan with no solid details for a western release. Those of you hoping for a next-generation Persona are out luck for the time being, but this move shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.  The last main game in the series, Persona 4, was released on the PlayStation 2 in 2008 – two years after the release of the PS3! It was also ported to the PlayStation Vita with several improvements as Persona 4: Golden last year.

Check out the teaser trailer for yourself after the jump.Read More

New Trailer For Dying Light Shows Off New Lighting System

Posted on November 19, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

It has been a while since we’ve covered Techland & Warner Bro’s upcoming zombie action title Dying Light. Yesterday the publisher released a brand new trailer showcasing a reworked lighting engine, based upon Techland’s Chrome Engine 6 this brief trailer shows off some really realistic lighting conditions in a highly detailed city-scape. According to Warner Bros this brand new engine harnesses the power of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

An open world action gameDying Light tasks players with fighting off the undead while trying to survive as they collect pieces of scrap & debris to fashion make-shift weapons. The game also utilizes a pretty impressive parkour style free-roaming mechanic.

We don’t know the exact release date for Dying Light outside of a wide 2014 window. It will be available for Xbox One, PS4, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Delayed

Posted on November 18, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Square Enix has decided to delay the upcoming re-mastered versions of Final Fantasy X & Final Fantasy X-2 the publisher announced this morning. Instead of launching on the PlayStation 3 this November the collection has been moved to March 21st 2014 for the PlayStation 3 in North America. No news on the release date of the upcoming Vita version of the Final Fantasy X HD re-masters, but Square Enix issued a small statement to Joystiq where they will clear things up at a ‘future date’.

Final Fantasy X / X-2 has been touched up for the current generation of consoles with enhanced graphics and both games pressed on to a single disc. Other improvements that Square announced include the inclusion of 60 re-arranged music tracks and cross-save support for those who will be playing it on both PS Vita and PS3.

Warner Bros Interactive Announces Middle-Earth: Shadow Of Mordor

Posted on November 12, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Warner Bros Interactive has announced a brand new Lord of the Rings videogame with the reveal of Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor. A third person action game, Mordor casts the player as Talion a range whom is killed while battling the forces of Mordor. As he draws his final breath Talion is revived by the spirit of vengeance and given the same powers that the Ring Wraiths posses. Sworn to destroy the forces that ended his mortal existence, Shadow of Mordor sounds like an awesome tale of revenge with a fantasy twist.

The developers have also revealed one of the game’s unique mechanics – the fact that each enemy you encounter is different. Every character will have their own attributes such as strength, their own personality and their own weaknesses. Also briefly mentioned was the Nemesis System where Talion will forge rivalries with enemy NPCs. It is unknown if the Nemesis System pertains to only major characters in the story-line or if its type specific, similar to the way that players can have a “favoured” enemy in some pen & paper systems, affording them extra bonuses.

Shadows of Mordor will be released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. If you’re looking for more updates why not head on over to their official website or twitter page?

HyperDimension Neptunia: Victory Coming PSN

Posted on November 11, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Did you miss out on NIS’ videogame-history inspired RPG Hyperdimension Neptunia when it was released this past March? If you did then don’t worry about trying to hunt down a physical copy at your local EB Games or paying inflated prices on Amazon or Ebay because NIS America / NIS Europe will be releasing the game on the PlayStation Network. You’ll be available to download the game in the comfort of your own home right to your PlayStation 3 console. It’ll be available November 26th or 27th depending on your region!

Hyperdimension Neptunia is the third game in the long running RPG franchise. Featuring a self-aware, and often fourth wall breaking main character – Neptune – these games blend traditional roleplaying mechanics with video game references and tropes. Unlike other entries in the series, Victory takes cues from the system wars of the 1980s. Be prepared to be transported back to the 8-bit wars of yesteryear! Heck, the main character’s name, Neptune, is a reference to a failed SEGA console that didn’t see the light of day.

Grand Theft Auto V | Review

Posted on November 8, 2013 by Jason Nason

Ever since I began playing video games so many years ago there is one game that I always wanted to play. My idea for an ideal game was one where you could live out a life as a character in a city or town. You could go anywhere and do pretty much anything. You could have a job, go to the store, drive around, talk with and interact with people and so much more. The Grand Theft Auto series is that game.

I never played much of the original two titles but it was the franchise’s third game, which brought the series into 3D that really impressed me. Playing through Liberty City where you could follow the story of the game or just walk around and explore really spoke to me.Read More

PlayStation 3 Surpasses 80 Million Units

Posted on November 6, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Sony has sold a lot of PlayStation 3 consoles, 80 million worldwide as of November 2nd according to a recent press release from the console manufacturer. Pretty impressive considering the console launched in November 2006, on average they sold more than 11 million units a year! While everyone is talking about the PlayStation 4, sometimes it is important to look back and see what came before.

Some major milestones outlined by Sony: The launch of PlayStation Plus – which has been providing discounts to PlayStation Store content for over 3 years. Who of course could forget the Instant Games Collection either, every month Sony releases multiple  games for free to PS Plus subscribers for the past two years, for $60 a year it’s not a bad deal. Lastly, the PlayStation Store launched in November 2006 providing free online game play to every console.

I’m a huge proponent of Sony’s free games imitative and surely players who don’t already own a PS3 or can’t find a PlayStation may consider picking up a PS3 this holiday. With the launch of the PS4, I am a little shocked we haven’t seen a price cut just before the holidays. In Canada the PS3 sells for $249.99 and is available bundled with NHL 14 and a 250GB hard drive.

Sine Mora Is The Latest Gratis Game on PlayStation Plus

Posted on October 28, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

The PlayStation Vita suffered a bit of a drought this past summer but now with new releases like Killzone: Mercenary & Dragon’s Crown on the shelves and YS just on the horizon, we finally have some new retail games to play. Well, Sony is upping the ante for those of us looking for digital games with the announcement that Grasshopper Manufacture’s 2012 shoot’em up Sine Mora will be available free of charge for PlayStation Plus subscribers starting tomorrow, provided you’ve got the space on your memory card.

Bullet hell shooters are nothing new but Sine Mora changes up the established formula with a different kind of health mechanic. Instead of a health meter, Sine Mora challenges players to complete stages within a given time limit and to add just a little bit more sweat to your brow – every time you take a hit the time limit just a little bit. With its colourful graphics and 5 different modes it sounds like Sine Mora has a lot of content and you can’t really beat the price of free!

Sine Mora was originally released in the Fall of 2012 and has ported to the PlayStation 3, PS Vita, Xbox 360, PC, Android / IOS and most recently the Ouya.

Surprise! You Can Battle Aliens In COD: Ghost’s Extinction Mode

Posted on October 28, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

It looks like copies of Call of Duty: Ghosts are already out in the wild. Considering the game is due out in a week’s time, this should come as a surprise to no one. What is a bit of a surprise, is the reveal of Extinction Mode, a sort of replacement for the ever popular Zombies mode that challenges you to battle off waves of extra terrestrials.

The confirmation of Extinction mode comes after several screen grabs of the mode made their way around the internet over the weekend. You won’t be battling the alien hordes right away mind you, unlike Zombies – Extinction is unlocked after you’ve completed the first five campaign missions in Ghosts.

Check out a brief trailer and official description after the jump!Read More

Rumor: Alien Isolation In Development At Creative Assembly

Posted on October 22, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

The long running Aliens franchise is set to return to our living rooms next year in the form of a brand new video game being developed by the studio behind Total War, Creative Assembly. Titled Alien: Isolation, this new first person shooter has  reportedly been in development for some time for both current gen (PS3 / Xbox 360) & next-gen (PC / PS4/ Xbox One) platforms  and will hopefully not end up in a similar PR nightmare that Aliens: Colonial Marines became during its launch this past spring.Read More

Rumor: GTA V Online To Feature Microtransactions

Posted on September 23, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

By exploiting a glitch that allows players to access the store section of Grand Theft Auto V players have gained access to some files stored on RockStar’s servers.

These files include a text dump for an item called the  “Red Shark Cash Card”. Valued at $100,000 in-game currency, this virtual stack of cash is good across all of Los Santos! Other users have found a single image (pictured at the end of this article) that hints at a similar “$100,000 Maze Bank” card.

What do you think about the possibility of microtransactions being included in Grand Theft Auto Online? The online componet of GTA V isn’t live just yet but will be available early next month! Featuring up to 16 players, GTA Online allows you to explore the entire map, all the while taking part in competatyive matches, create crews similar to those featured in Max Payne 3 and other activities.

Surely we will find out more about Grand Theft Auto V on October 1st, get ready!

NHL 14 | Review

Posted on September 11, 2013 by Jason Nason

Aside from demos, I haven’t played a full edition of EA’s NHL series since way back in NHL 07. That’s a long time to be away, though I have played that game an awful lot. The newest game in the series, aptly titled NHL 14, continues on with everything that I thought was great in that game and builds upon it to make an even greater game.

Included in NHL 14 are a few new modes as well as the franchise’s continual advancement of existing features.

One of the new modes is in celebration of the 20th anniversary of NHL ’94, which was released twenty years ago for the SNES and Sega Genesis. NHL ’94 Anniversary Mode is a new way to get into old-school NHL action.
