Gold Coins are now Points; My Nintendo arrives for Nintendo Switch

Posted on March 6, 2018 by Jason Nason

It took a year but My Nintendo members can now redeem Gold Points for digital games and DLC for the Nintendo Switch.

When you buy a qualifying digital game for Nintendo Switch, Wii U, or Nintendo 3DS, or a physical game for the Nintendo Switch system, you’ll earn Gold Points based on the amount you pay (excluding any points or discounts used). You’ll earn 5% for eligible digital purchases on Nintendo.com or Nintendo eShop (Nintendo Switch, Nintendo 3DS, Wii U) and 1% of the Nintendo eShop price for physical purchases for the Nintendo Switch.

Redeem those points on your next eligible digital purchase (including games and DLC) for the Nintendo Switch system. Just look for the option to apply your points during checkout.

According to the Nintendo release, if you buy a $59.99 game on Nintendo eShop, you’ll earn 300 Gold Points. Those points can then be redeemed for $3 toward your next purchase, which will earn more Gold Points, according to the amount you paid (excluding any points or discounts used). So 1 gold point is equal to 1 cent (CAD).

With the addition of Nintendo Switch to the My Nintendo program, Nintendo has made some changes. Previously called “Platinum coins” and “Gold coins,” the value of the revised points has changed. Previously the Gold Coins earned were in tiers. When I purchased Pokémon Silver in the Nintendo eShop ($12.89 CAD) I earned just 10 Gold Coins. Making the same purchase now would now earn “up to 64 Gold Points.”

Overall this does seem like a good change and the arrival of My Nintendo on Nintendo Switch is definitely a great thing.

Detective Pikachu is on the way

Posted on February 26, 2018 by Jason Nason

Nintendo’s latest Pokémon spinoff title Detective Pikachu is nearing its March 23rd release for the Nintendo 3DS. In the title you must team up with the self-proclaimed “great detective” Pikachu to solve a puzzling case involving oddly behaving Pokémon, discover a possible connection to the mysterious Mewtwo and encounter many characters in Ryme City.

Ryme City is a place where people and Pokémon live together. But recently, many friendly Pokémon are behaving oddly for no apparent reason. While Pikachu and his friend Tim search for Tim’s father, Harry, they unwittingly stumble into the mysterious case of the problematic Pokémon. Can they solve the mystery and also find Tim’s father?

While many different Pokémon appear in Detective Pikachu, the one who seems to hold the biggest connection to the overall mystery is Mewtwo. How is Mewtwo connected to everything? And why does Mewtwo seem to know Pikachu?

Along the way, experience over 150 fun-filled animated cutscenes starring this unique, wise-cracking Pikachu and a charming cast of curious characters who may help you on your investigation. You can also tap the new, extra-large Detective Pikachu amiibo figure to access all cutscenes up until the current chapter played.

Splatoon 2 Starter Edition coming March 16th

Posted on February 12, 2018 by Jason Nason

If aren’t among the 4.9 million who have picked up a copy of Splatoon 2 yet, a great deal is just around the corner.

On March 16th, the Splatoon 2 Starter Edition will launch in stores. The special bundle includes the full game, a 100-page Splatoon 2 strategy guide, and two sheets of Splatoon stickers. The bundle will retail for a suggested retail price of only $59.99 USD. That’s the same price as the stand-alone game, so this new Starter Edition adds even more value.

Splatoon 2 launched for Nintendo Switch last summer and has sold more than 4.9 million units worldwide so far. The action-filled game pits teams of Inklings against each other in a variety of fun and messy modes. Since launch, Nintendo has consistently rolled out new content for the game, including recurring fan-favorite competitions called Splatfests, a new battle mode, as well as new gear and stages, like the just-announced Dark Tetra Dualies weapon and basketball-arena-themed Goby Arena stage.

Also, as we brought you yesterday, Nintendo has announced a brand new 2-pack amiibo of Pearl and Marina, two of the most popular new characters in Splatoon 2. These amiibo figures will launch in stores later this year.

Pearl and Marina amiibo for Splatoon 2 announced

Posted on February 11, 2018 by Jason Nason

Another new set of amiibo are in their way!

Pearl and Marina, two of the most popular characters in Splatoon 2, are getting their own amiibo figures.

This talented duo forms the group ‘Off the Hook’ and has been burning up the Inkling music charts. First, you’ve got Pearl, the cute and sassy MC with a talent for spitting fire. Then you’ve got Marina, the dazzling DJ genius dropping beats on the wheels of steel. Like Callie and Marie before them, everyone loves them as the broadcasters of Inkopolis News and Splatfest events.

The amiibo figures will launch in stores exclusively as part of a 2-pack later this year. No word on exact date of the releases.

Maintenance Tuesday for Pocket Camp ahead of new features

Posted on February 10, 2018 by Jason Nason

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp will be undergoing some scheduled maintenance early next week. The maintenance will take place starting February 13th at 11am ET and run until later that day, wrapping up around 6pm ET.

Since Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is an online only game the game will be offline during that time, so you will be unable to play Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp.

The maintenance is certainly to bring in a few new features to the game, which have been teased about on Twitter. These include the ability to dress up your animal campers as well as a new device coming to OK Motors. The “Brake Tapper” device looks to be a slot machine. There is little information to go on but likely this will have a free daily play followed by spending of Leaf Tickets for additional plays.

There will also very likely be more to the dress up aspect. Look to have animals have preferred clothing options and request specific clothing items be crafted to their liking. This could also be an added request before an animal will come to your campground.

Lottie’s Gothic Rose Festival just wrapped up yesterday. Be sure to go by your garden, pick the remaining roses, and collect your Bells from Lottie.

Update: The Japanese Twitter account for Pocket Camp @pokemori_jp tweeted out a teaser image for the next in game event from Lloyd’s perspective. The next series of furniture items seem to have a crystal theme.

Nintendo announces Mario Kart Tour coming to smartphones

Posted on January 31, 2018 by Jason Nason

Nintendo revealed that they are working on another game for mobile devices, this one featuring their biggest character – Mario. Start your engines as Mario will be making the leap to smartphones in Mario Kart Tour.

Details are scare with just the single tweet tonight, but the game will be released next fiscal year. That means the game could be released any time between April 2018 and March 2019.

Nintendo has four mobile games on the market and just announced that they are shutting down their first mobile game Miitomo. Other mobile games from Nintendo for smartphones include Fire Emblem Heroes, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, and Super Mario Run. There are also a handful of Pokémon themed games from The Pokémon Company including Pokémon Shuffle, which was first released on the Nintendo 3DS.

Nintendo partnering with Illumination to make Mario movie

Posted on January 31, 2018 by Jason Nason

Finally! While some people have some weird attachment to the Super Mario Bros. live action theatrical atrocity that was made, many people would rather forget that ever existed. I’ll admit that I did see it when I was a kid but I’ve mostly blocked it out of my memory. Well we can prepare to completely forget that movie ever existed as Nintendo is making a real Mario movie.

Nintendo announced via their Twitter account that they are partnering with Illumination to produce a movie starring Mario, co-produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri. According to a press release from Nintendo, the film will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and distributed theatrically worldwide by Universal Pictures.

Illumination is the animation house that put out the Despicable Me, Minions, and Ice Age movies.

There are no details with regards to what this movie would be about or a timeline for its release. It’s also hard to say if this announcement has been made as a deal was struck between the two companies or if the movie is well into production. The announcement also makes some sense with the planned addition of Super Mario themed attractions at Universal Studios theme parks.

We’ll have to wait and see, but I think many would echo this next sentiment.

Let’s a’GO!
