Sea Of Thieves Sails In With Some Gameplay Footage

Posted on June 13, 2016 by Les Major

Last year Rare had a first glance ready for us with the premiere of Sea Of Thieves. Today we were treated to some actual multiplayer gameplay with some selected players experiencing the game for the first time. It’s something else to see Rare’s take on something like Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag. This is certainly a game we’ll be following and a genre that has been a ton of fun in the past.

And as noted in the conference… great water!

Gears of War Slices Its Way Onto Xbox One This Fall

Posted on June 13, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

The Coliation showed off the world premiere demo for Gears of War 4 at the Microsoft E3 briefing in Los Angeles. Fans of the series will be right at home with the return of the series trademark behind cover gameplay, with some new additions of course – we saw one weapon in particular that looked to be straight out of Unreal Tournament, similar to the ripper it launched devastating blade projectiles at the enemy,

A female protagonist is front and center in this demonstration – from what we know of her story-line she will be attempting to find her mother. The trailer ends with her facing the camera and promising that she will “Burn their fucking hives to the ground”.

Gears of War 4 will be out this Fall for Xbox One & Windows 10 PC.

Titanfall 2’s DLC Will Be Free Dev Confirms

Posted on June 13, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Respawn Entertainment has confirmed that DLC for the game’s multiplayer will be free according to a statement given to our fellow games journalists at Game’s Radar.

Details about the exact nature of the post-launch add-ons will be confirmed closer to the game’s October 28th launch date according to EA executive Dough Wightman. The previous Xbox Exclusive Titanfall had 4 DLC expansion packs that eventually shifted to a free model as the player base for the multiplayer only first game dwindled.

Titanfall 2 is playable at EA’s “EA Play” events in Los Angeles, CA and is separate from the E3 conference which is happening all this week.

Quake Champions Will Hopefully Learn From DOOM’s Multiplayer Missteps

Posted on June 13, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Today at their pre-E3 press conference Bethesda revealed the rumored Quake reboot to the world and this re-introduction to id Software’s 1990s darling is probably not what a lot of people expected – an arena shooter.

Foregoing the series roots as a open ended corridor shooter Quake Champions aims re-live the glory days (or is that gorey days?) of Quake III arena with a focus on arena style combat. Bethesda says that the game will be accessible for players of all skill levels but will also offer options that cater to the series’ hardcore fans such as an unlocked frame-rate and 120hz monitor support.

A Shot From 1999’s Quake III Arena

After watching the debut trailer, which you can also enjoy in the embedded trailer below, I can’t help but wonder if Quake Champions can learn from last month’s DOOM. The single player of DOOM was absolutely excellent but the game’s multiplayer was not so well received. Featuring generic announcer voices, an odd lack of ambient music during key moments in firefights, a paltry selection of weapons and over powered demon summons – DOOM’s multiplayer pretty much has written the book on HOW NOT to make an arena shooter in 2016.

Bethesda’s pre-launch marketing for DOOM’s multiplayer hailed it as a return to the arena shooters of old and with the announcement of a season’s pass and a lukewarm reception to the game’s open beta it was a foregone conclusion that they would take another stab at building a lasting multiplayer shooter. They’re promising a focus on e-sports combined with character specific abilities abilities and certainly Blizzard’s Overwatch proves that there is a market for such a product, but with contenders like Paragon up and coming – is it took late for one of the FPS team arena champions to make a return?

We’ll find out more about Bethesda’s plans for Quake Champions at this August’s Quakecon. Until then we can just keep watching the debut trailer over and over….

Xbox One Slim leaks before E3

Posted on June 12, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Xbox One

Xbox seems to have been scooped. Despite there being a tight wrap on their supposed hardware announcements tomorrow at their press conference, at least one photo of a new Xbox Slim has leaked. The post first appeared on Neogaff but has since been verified by separate sources.

xboxslim

that’s about it, you get a 40% slimmer box, with a larger hard drive, the ability to push 4K video with HDR sound and a stand to make it vertical. Also announced with this apparent leak is the smaller slim controller, which is described as Sleeker, slimmer, sharper.

This box is not to be confused with the newer more powerful model of Xbox which is code-named “scorpio” and will presumably be announced tomorrow at the Microsoft E3 press conference.

Titanfall 2 Ready For Launch On October 28th

Posted on June 12, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

It is official – Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts will unleash an assault upon both online & offline players in the form of Titanfall 2 on October 28th. Unlike the first title, which was released exclusively for Windows PC & Xbox One, Titanfall 2 will include both a single-player campaign and multiplayer component.

In the narrative driven portion players enter the shoes of Jack Cooper, a member of a paramilitary militia that links with a one of the titular Titans after its’ pilot is killed. It appears that this link between robot & pilot will be front & center in the single player portion of the game. In Titanfall 1 the link between the two wasn’t really emphasized save for the ability to have your titan defend you through an automated A.I if you ejected during combat.

On the multiplayer front things appeared to have evolved quite a bit since the last time pilot’s strapped on their uniforms. The parkour movement system that helped set the original apart from the pack of other sci-fi shooters has been upgraded with the ability to use a grappling hook and then slide into a safe space. EA will also launch a network test for the game’s multiplayer ahead of release but no solid information on that has been confirmed at this time.
Check out the two debut trailers below from EA’s E3 press conference.

Nintendo holding StreetPass Week for E3

Posted on June 12, 2016 by Jason Nason

It’s been a while since I’ve been excited for a national StreetPass weekend. Ever since McDonald’s dropped off as a Nintendo Zone location it’s been next to impossible to participate. The only Nintendo Zone locations left in Canada are Best Buy stores, which are pretty scarce.

But regardless, from June 10th thru June 19 Nintendo has another national StreetPass event going on for E3. Bring your Nintendo 3DS system to a Nintendo Zone location to collect up to six StreetPass tags from around North America!

PS4 Neo Will Not Be At E3. Console Confirmed By Sony Exec Andrew House

Posted on June 10, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Rumors of an upgraded PlayStation 4 have been floating around for a quite a few months and have even included leak technical specs. Those rumors can pretty much cease now that Sony’s Chief Global Executive, Andrew House, has confirmed to The Financial Times that the upgraded console will debut alongside the existing PS4 model from November 2013.

It is intended to sit alongside and complement the standard PS4 … We will be selling both [consoles] through the life cycle.”

PS4_Design2

Confirmation of the PS4 Neo comes ahead of Sony’s upcoming E3 press conference, according to house the upgraded PlayStation will not be making an appearance. He did however confirm the longstanding rumor that PlayStation 4 games will have a ‘Neo mode’ as well as backwards compatibility with the existing console once the Neo ships.

Whatever Sony announces in Los Angeles we will bring it to you. Both Fionna and myself will be at the Sony press conference on Monday evening.

Doom’s Multiplayer to get revamp

Posted on June 9, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Most people (including Rae) who played the single player campaign of DOOM said “wow this is good” but then found the multiplayer to be lackluster, generic, and boring. Some of the complaints were legitimate and the internet was full of players trying to get their money’s worth  out of a crappy game with little online content, while also having to contend with cheaters and a lack of standard features like custom games. Speaking to Eurogamer, executive producer Marty Stratton revealed how id is tackling complaints.

“There’s certainly no lack of commitment to Doom as a multiplayer game on our side. We are already working on private matches with custom game settings and expect to include that in a free update this summer.”

So there you go. If you were one of those people who bought DOOM for nostalgia, because you love ID or just because you thought it looked cool you might be getting a massive content update soon. Though private matches are mentioned here, dont expect those to occur on private servers, rather what  Marty is probably saying is that they will allow for games with custom options. This doesnt fix one of the most rampant issues, the cheating, but it also means that people wont be able to set up say a surfing server or a server will all of one type of gun, or a server running a hacked lobby. It leaves more control in the hands of the developers, which I can’t see as being too bad.  ID is looking into implementing a traditional match browser too. Bots are also planned, but according to Marty they are still some ways off.

“Our bot system was actually written by one of our long-time senior programmers, John Dean, known online as ‘Maleficus’, who also wrote the Return to Castle Wolfenstein Fritz bot and the bots in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, so he does great work with bots. But John also just happens to be our internal lead programmer on SnapMap, so he’s very busy.”

In my most humble opinion, shipping a game with something as powerful as snapmap and not giving people the private server to play those maps on, and the bots to practice against, was a poor move by ID. Bethesda will be talking more about their newest shooter at their E3 showcase on Sunday 12, 7pm PT. We will be covering it live, so be sure to tune in!
