New World of Warplanes Dev Diary Released

Posted on July 17, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

Wargaming.net has released the fourth developer’s diary for their upcoming free-to-play aerial combat game World of Warplanes. This diary focuses on the game’s control schemes: keyboard, keyboard and mouse, gamepad, and joystick. The developers promise that while “every control option comes with its own unique style and feel,” none will “grant you any in-combat advantage.” Certainly, an individual’s skill will play a great role, but we here at Broken Joysticks, after rigorous and totally unbiased testing, have come to the conclusion that joysticks are inherently superior.

You may watch the developer’s diary after the jump, but beware! It is in Byelorussian, so you’ll have to read subtitles.Read More

Legends of Pegasus X’or Race Trailer Released

Posted on July 17, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

Kalypso released a new trailer for their upcoming 4X strategy game Legends of Pegasus. This trailer showcases the X’or faction, an isolationist race of sentient machines. While the trailer focuses mostly on story, there is a little bit of gameplay footage thrown in, as well as the interesting tidbit that the X’or can colonize planets that would be totally inhospitable to other races. Long live the glorious empire of emotionless machines doing science on dead asteroids and planets with toxic fumes, unbearable pressure, extreme temperatures, and giant worms that rely on psychic attacks to pwn humans.

My hope is that Legends of Pegasus won’t include a highly intelligent race of unstoppable synthetics that will stop by every planet and kill all organics to protect them from a war with the X’or. Wouldn’t that be a stupid idea?

Steam Summer Sale Deals for July 14th

Posted on July 14, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

As I feared, the Steam summer sale has continued, and it shows no signs of abating before the 22nd. I tried to fight it, but I eventually gave into the temptation and bought some games. My friend better enjoy Space Marine, because that’s one submarine sandwich that I’ll never be able to eat.

You can see today’s daily deals below.Read More

Steam Summer Sale Deals for July 13th

Posted on July 13, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

Shortly after 10 AM Pacific Daylight Time, the Steam Summer Sale of 2012 began its second day. The carnage is unspeakable, as Valve continues to ravage the wallets of countless PC gamers. I was even suckered into partaking in one of these so-called deals. For the sake of my discretionary spending, I can only pray that the sale doesn’t start back up again at around 10 AM PDT tomorrow.

That being said, we’ve posted today’s daily deals below. Anything look enticing?Read More

Steam Summer Sale Begins

Posted on July 12, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

It was bound to happen sooner or later. The Steam Summer Sale has officially started. Are you ready to throw money at GabeN?

There are a few changes from the last couple of sales. First off, there are no achievement hunts or contests. These have been replaced by “Flash Sales” and “Community Choice” deals. Flash sales last for less than a day (for instance Deus Ex Human Revolution is on sale for $7.50 for the next four and a half hours or so). The “Community Choice” deals are voted on by Steam users and last for 8 hours. At the moment, users can choose between massive discounts on Saints Row: The Third, Batman: Arkham City, and The Witcher 2.

Since the Flash Sales and Community Choice deals may very well change before you read this, we’ll just give a rundown of today’s daily deals.

Serious Sam 3: Jewel of the Nile Announced

Posted on July 10, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

Croteam and Devolver Digital have announced Serious Sam 3: Jewel of the Nile. This expansion pack for Serious Sam 3: BFE is set for a PC release in October. Croteam’s Davor Hunski claims that the expansion “tells more of Sam’s story and cranks up the insanity.” Having played through some of it, I’m surprised to learn that Serious Sam 3 had a story (other than “go kill these monsters”).

According to the press release, the expansion will feature three new campaign missions set around the Temple of Isis on the real life Egyptian island of Philae. Devolver Digital’s Fork Parker posed the question as to whether Philae had any nude beaches, adding that “the only thing better than fast-paced, over-the-top action is a perfect pair of digital flesh melons.” Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to be the case in real life. However, reality doesn’t feature hordes of screaming headless guys running around with bombs grafted on their hands, either. So, the developers shouldn’t feel constrained by anything remotely resembling reality.

If you are interested, you may read the full press release below.

If you are interested in picking up a cheap copy of the newfangled dungeon crawler Legend of Grimrock, then you should head on over to Good Old Games. You can pick it up on sale for $7.49 USD until July 11 at 5:59 AM EDT. That’s a pretty good deal for a critically acclaimed game that just came out in April. Unfortunately, you’ll have to act with extreme alacrity if you want to get in on this.

Have any of you played it? What are your thoughts? Is a $7.49 DRM free copy a steal that will intrigue even the most jaded rouges and thieves?

Panzer Corps’ First Standalone Expansion Inbound

Posted on July 10, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

Slitherine and Matrix Games have announced the first standalone expansion for their turn-based wargame Panzer Corps, entitled Panzer Corps: Afrika Corps. As the name suggests, this expansion will put you in control of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel’s Deutsches Afrikakorps as you attempt to push Britain out of the Middle East. Particularly successful players will even have an opportunity to advance into British India. Grognards will get a chance to outshine the Desert Fox once the expansion is released on the 31st of this month.

In addition to this new expansion, the original Panzer Crops is now on sale for 33% off. The sale lasts until the 15th, so people interested in conquering hexes for the Reich may want to look into the sale. You may read my review of the original Panzer Corps here and check out some of Afrika Corps’ features after the jump.Read More

Killing Floor Summer Sideshow Event Begins

Posted on July 6, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

The second annual Killing Floor Summer Sideshow event has just begun. As with other seasonal events, the sideshow changes up Killing Floor’s usual menagerie of misanthropic mutants. Instead of facing off against angry, generally nude, specimens, Killing Floor owners will be facing angry specimens with freak show skins. The free update also includes some new achievements, another chance to unlock the Steampunk Mr. Foster skin, the new “Hellride” map, and 5 new weapons that were originally part of the IJC community weapons pack mod. While the skins and seasonal achievements will only be available until the 23rd, the new map and weapons are permanent.

Second Free DLC Released for Wargame: European Escalation

Posted on July 5, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

Eugen Systems released additional free downloadable content for Wargame: European Escalation today. The “Conquest” DLC adds a new mode (which also goes by the moniker “conquest”). This mode, playable against the AI or other people, is based around seizing and maintaining control of victory sectors on the map rather than annihilating the enemy’s forces. It also comes with 7 new maps (bringing the total number of maps to around 27). To commemorate the new DLC, Wargame is half off on Steam from now until the 9th of July.

You can read my review of Wargame here. Read on if you’re interested in my initial impressions of the DLC.Read More

Ship Simulator Extremes Collection and New Magicka DLC Released

Posted on June 19, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

Paradox Interactive has announced the release of two titles today. The first is the Ship Simulator Extremes Collection which includes the base game and all of its 6 DLCs.  This collection will allow land lubbers to be the skipper on ships ranging from puny dingies to gargantuan cargo vessels. The press release promises hundreds of hours of gameplay and several real world ports, hopefully most of those promised hours won’t involve being stuck in St. Paul Island‘s dock because of ice. The collection also includes a revamped mission editor and 24 player online multiplayer (I shudder to think of the traffic jams).

The other title is a new DLC for Magicka titled The Other Side of the Coin. This DLC lets players take on the role of “Alucart the Vampire,” who is totally different from various vampires named Alucard. For one thing, Alucart’s name ends with a T rather than a D. Furthermore, he’s got some necromancer buddies and a mission to destroy everything that is good and wholesome in Magicka’s universe (if there is anything wholesome in a series that practically encourages you to “accidentally” kill your friends).

You can view trailers for both titles after the jump.Read More

Doom 3 BFG Edition Release Date Announced

Posted on June 19, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

Bethesda Softworks has announced the details of Doom 3 BFG Edition’s release date. This re-mastered version of Doom 3 (which includes the Resurrection of Evil expansion, 7 new levels, as well as Doom and Doom 2) is, if all goes according to the Spider Mastermind’s plan, coming to North America on October 16. Europe will have to wait an extra three days.

Most of the press release focuses on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 version. For example, there will be achievements, trophies, a check point save system, and “fine-tuned” controls that will “bring the intensity of the DOOM single and multiplayer experience to the consoles.” However, PC gamers will pay only $29.99 for the BFG edition, ten dollars less than the console versions. Also, PC gamers who fondly remember the duct tape mod will be happy to know that the BFG edition has added an “armor-mounted flashlight,” giving players the ability to see things and shoot them simultaneously.
