Nintendo and Nickelodeon Bring the Next Splatfest to a Pineapple Under the Sea

Posted on April 14, 2016 by Jason Nason

On April 23rd, Nintendo is partnering with Nickelodeon to bring a SpongeBob SquarePants-themed Splatfest to Splatoon. Players will be asked to declare their allegiance to either the world’s most lovable sponge, SpongeBob SquarePants, or his starfish sidekick, Patrick Star, from Nickelodeon’s animated television show SpongeBob SquarePants.

“Two international pop culture sensations meet when the SpongeBob SquarePants Splatfest comes to Splatoon,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “Fun partnerships like this take advantage of the crossover appeal that family-friendly franchises like Splatoon and SpongeBob provide. Personally, I’m team SpongeBob all the way.”

Splatoon Splatfest Results: Blue wins the Day

Posted on February 21, 2016 by Jason Nason

The results of the latest Splatfest are in and it looks like Blue has won the day.

Despite Red winning the popular vote, Blue had a higher win percentage and took the round in points. I had chosen team Red because my very first Pokémon game was the red version with Charizard on the cover. I got the game way back when it was first released.

Which team were you on? Did your team win?Read More

Splatoon Concert Looks like a Fun-filled event

Posted on February 8, 2016 by Jason Nason

I don’t read and can’t speak or understand Japanese either, which leaves me with just a jealous curiosity about this event.

It looks like Japan was treated to a “live” Splatoon concert featuring Callie and Marie from Nintendo’s hit Wii U game. This ia the sort of silly, yet amazing, things that make fans in North America want to hop on a plane and move East.

Check out the concert below, courtesy Nintendo of Japan. It’s quite amazing.Read More

Final Splatoon Weapon Drops Tonight

Posted on January 15, 2016 by Jason Nason

The end is near. The final new weapon will splash into Splatoon today making a total of 74 weapons available in the game.

The final weapon is called the Custom Hydra Splatling and will arrive tomorrow. While no time was mentioned in the announcement, the last weapon was released at 9:00pm so that is likely the time that the new weapon will be released.

Fans of Splatoon have had a great run of original DLC being released for the game, and kudos to Nintendo for keeping the content coming and keeping it free. Many games go the DLC route and can end up costing fans the cost equivalent to another full game.

The new weapon coincides with the latest Splatfest, which asks the question would you rather visit the past or the future.

Splatoon’s Free Content To Dry Up Next Month

Posted on December 30, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Nintendo’s take on the competitive shooter, Splatoon, has managed to stay fresh for the past seven months thanks to a steady stream of free content – including new maps, outfits and weapons – since it launched this past May. It seems that the developers have finally decided to put an end to delivering new content to players and will instead focus on regular events like Splatfests and balance updates.

Speaking on the subject, the game’s producer Hisahi Nogami said:

“There are already 14 stages and over 70 kinds of weapons. So if they add even more, it would be hard for players to memorize all of them, especially when considering weapon compatibility with stages.”

Are you said to see the end of updates for Splatoon? The game was certainly one of the more pleasant surprises of the year – bringing a color art style, unique gameplay and frantic fast based multiplayer to Nintendo’s latest console. Here’s hoping even without regular content drops Splatoon will stay populated in the months to come.

Nintendo Unveils The Miiverse’s Top 3 Games For Wii U / 3DS

Posted on December 20, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Nintendo has unveiled the most popular games as measured via traffic on their Miiverse social media website / Wii U application.  This year didn’t feature the two big marquee releases for Wii U – Star Fox: Zero and The Legend of Zelda Wii U, as both of those games got delayed into 2016. However, it was strong year nonetheless for both platforms with releases including the surprise hit Splatoon, the ever inventive Mario Maker, monsters causing mayhem in Monster Hunter 5 on Nintendo 3DS among other great titles.

So which games made the top 3 per platform? I won’t leave you in suspense… according to Nintendo the top 3 choices according to fans on Miiverse where:

Wii U

  1. Splatoon
  2. Super Mario Maker
  3. Xenoblade Chrincles X

3DS

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D
  2. The Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes
  3. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

Did any of these top six games surprise you? For me, it’s not shocking to see Xenoblade in the top 3 for Wii U even though the game has only been out for under two weeks. Fans have been anticipating its release ever since it was revealed several E3s ago. I also really enjoyed the fresh kicks that Splatoon introduced over the summer – with its focus on team based objectives rather than traditional KDR it was a refreshing take on the established Team Death Match formula.  Now that I think about it, my family ended up purchasing almost all of these games…

Nintendo Dampening Expectations For This Most Recent Direct Was the Right Move

Posted on November 12, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Nintendo’s decision to post a notice on the Nintendo Direct official website outlining that they had no plans to discuss the NX or Mobile during today’s broadcast was absolutely the right move. Usually dampening your fan bases expectation for such a high profile event like the return of Nintendo Directs would be a bad thing but I feel that it helped Nintendo focus solely on the message that the Wii U and 3DS have a lot of life left in them heading into next year.  Read More

Nintendo Launching Splatoon & Mario Kart 8 Bundle In Europe

Posted on October 8, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Nintendo Europe has unveiled a brand new retail bundle for their latest console which includes a black 32GB Wii U, a digital copy of Splatoon and a pre-installed copy of last year’s surprise hit Mario Kart 8. According to their official press release the Marrio Kart + Splatoon Premium Bundle will see a limited release across Europe starting October 30th and is subject to availability. This makes it sound like this bundle might be a limited time thing – so if you haven’t jumped on the Wii U yet here is your chance to pick up two of the system’s games along with the console itself.

As of the writing of this article no pricing has been announced and was not available via Press Release or Nintendo’s official website.

Autobots or Decepticons? Choose your side in Splatoon!

Posted on August 18, 2015 by Jason Nason

After a series of Cats vs Dogs splatfests, the ante is about to be upped in the next round with a joined venture between Nintendo and Hasbro. Are you team Autobot or team Decepticon?

Nintendo and Hasbro are joining forces to help you defend your robot allegiances in the Splatoon game for the Wii U console.

Splatoon features themed events called Splatfests that let players pick a preference, such as Autobots or Decepticons, and then compete against the opposing side in online battles. A Splatfest celebration lasts for 24 hours, during which players head into battle and try to rack up Turf War wins for their side. While the Splatfest is ongoing, in-game characters get to wear a special T-shirt that shows which Transformers team has their allegiance. The ink that each team shoots will also be customized to match the color scheme of the chosen side.

Remember a few months ago back at E3 when Nintendo revealed that certain Amiibo like the Wii Fit trainer would change Mario’s sprite in Super Mario Maker?  Well it turns out you can earn this skins for the red plumber without forking over nearly forty bucks for a Wii Fit trainer or other rare Amiibo. They can be unlocked by completing the 100 Mario challenge instead!

Also spotted by GoNintendo were screen-grabs posted on the Miiverse that show that Super Mario Maker will support the Pit, Sonic and Splatoon Amiibo if you happen to own them.
