Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood Benchmark Reveals New Job Actions

Posted on May 1, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Adventurers in Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood will soon set sail for the land of Doma and Ala Mhigo. Before they set foot in these new areas it is best to make sure that one’s PC is up to the task. Both acting as a stress test for the upcoming expansion and a tease for keen-eyed players – offering a look at several unannounced job actions – the PC benchmark is a must download for any hardcore FFXIV player.

The official Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood benchmark takes players through several different pre-configured scenes including a bustling Doman city, a large scale battle on the outskirts of Ala Mhigo, into the heart of the uprising and even one of the new primal fights.

In addition to the release of the downloadable Benchmark a Letter To The Producer Live was held last week. The broadcast was in Japanese only but thankfully FFXIV Community Manager Matt Hilton was on hand to provide translations of the several player questions asked on the live stream.

Regarding weather effects and aesthetic differences between A Realm Reborn, Heavansward and Stormblood:

Q: Heavensward areas were different from ARR areas in how the light and shadow were applied. Will there be a different scheme for Stormblood areas as well? Please let us know if there are any unique weather conditions or times of day that are especially spectacular!

A: Once again, the biggest focus is in the contrast between light and shadow. Many small specifications were made regarding putting the visuals together; one such detail was “air”, such as clouds, mist, and fog. The Other areas and dungeons are themed around “the feeling of air”.

There are also newly implemented weather conditions, so we’d be happy if players would take a step back and enjoy the sunrise/sunset occasionally.

Players got the chance to ask if there will be new hairstyles in FFXIV: Stormblood:

Q: I believe there are lots of NPCs in the Doman area with Asian-themed hairstyles. Would players be able to use these hairstyles? I want a top knot!

A: There will be two new hairstyles, but there’s no top knot. If there’s a lot of request for it, we’ll consider it.

Here is what Yoshi P had to say about how gear progression and procurement will work in Stormblood in contrast to 3.0 and ARR:

Q: Will there be job-specific gear in Patch 4.0? If so, I would like to know how we obtain them.

A: *The video showed CG artwork for the dark knight, dragoon, paladin, bard, and scholar job-specific gear.

In 3.0, players exchanged Allagan tomestones of esoterics to obtain their job-specific gear, but since they were job-specific, it was difficult to obtain them, and it also caused a situation where player item levels were not same when they hit level 60. We want everyone to look cool when they hit level 70, so we added a new system which offers a set of gear in a box, and players will be able to choose one. Additionally, I’m sure players will request this, so I just want to mention that once you take the gear out of the box, you won’t be able to put them back in.

Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood offers adventurers a number of new features beyond the two new areas. As with every expansion we’ll get new 24 person raids, new beast tribes, new side-quests, new light party dungeons and more. One of the biggest features being promoted currently is the ability to swim, gather under water and even dive deep with underwater mounts. Stormblood will be out on PS4, PS4 Pro and Windows PC on June 20th 2017. A number of bonus items are also being offered as an incentive for pre-ordering the expansion. New players who purchase Stormblood will also gain access to 2015’s Heavansward.

Tactics Alexander Savagely Gives Us a Taste of 16-Bit FFXIV

Posted on April 2, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

April Fools Day may have come and gone but the Final Fantasy XIV team produced one of the most obvious yet fantastic pranks this year.  Titled Alexander Tactics: Savage this fake game features recognizable encounters, monsters and NPCS from FFXIV Heavanswards’ raid content and adapts them in the style of Final Fantasy Tactics. I had no clue I needed this in my life but the idea of playing XIV’s raid content on the go with retro style graphics and turned based combat sounds absolutely awesome.

Split into four distinct wings – Gordias, Midas, The Creator – the Alexander raids provide challenging encounters for end-game players to collect sets of gear the scale higher in item level than those found throughout the rest of the game. While not quite as retro as this April Fools joke the next expansion, Stormblood, will take players back to the world of Ivalice – featured in Final Fantasy Tactics – with the new “Return To Ivalice” raids set to launch sometime this summer.

Last Final Fantasy XIV: Heavnsward Patch Released

Posted on March 28, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Great news for adventurers and Warriors of Light all around Eorzea – the last patch for Final Fantasy XIV: Heavansward has been released, leading up to June’s Stormblood expansion. With this latest patch before the next expansion drops Square Enix have brought us 4 new Main Story Quests. In addition there have been changes for Heavenswards’ raid finder system and the Tokens needed to claim some end-game loot from dungeons & raids. Some adjustments to the PVP portion that affect players of 2.X – A Realm Reborn as well as 3.X players as part of patch 3.56.

Here are some of the highlights of the latest patch:

Hevansward Specific Changes:

  • Four new Main Story Quests
  • Alexander The Creator (Savage) has been added to the Raid Finder
  • Weekly loot lock out from Alexander The Creator was removed
  • Maximum amount of Allegan Tome Stones of Scripture has been doubled.
  • Several adjustments that affect the monk 3.x abilities.

2.X PVP Adjustments

  • Damage reduction for the White Mage ability Sacred Prism.
  • Stun duration reduction for the PVP Monk ability Steel Peek.

If you’re a current FFXIV player, are you excited to see where Square takes the story leading into Stormblood? The next expansion doesn’t drop until June but I’ve already re-subscribed so that I can catch up on Main Scenario content before it releases. I’m a little over eight months behind the current patch, as of the writing of this news post I just finished Patch 3.3 “Revenge of the Horde”‘s main content.

How Can Square Enix Improve Final Fantasy XIV In Stormblood?

Posted on December 12, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Articled Written By: Jade Clarkson

In honor of Final Fantasy XIV announcing their newest expansion Stormblood, slated for release in early summer 2017, I have decided to write on my current feelings on the current state of the FFXIV. Also, I’d like to discuss what I feel have been amazing changes so far, and what could be improved on when Stormblood is released.

Let me start by saying that I absolutely adore the Final Fantasy series, it took all my willpower to put Final Fantasy XV down to write this, and have been playing this MMO since late 2013. I have seen the game evolve into something that I enjoy, but need to walk away from, time-to-time, mainly because of some of Square Enix’s choices; such as unnecessary token & currency grinds. I do however keep going back because of the community and the ease of access to those communities and other players that I regularly collaborate with.

Since its creation, Final Fantasy XIV has never compromised on its story content. I feel that this main story content is one of Square Enix’s strongest assets. If you have never played a Final Fantasy game in your life, the entire genre revolves around the narrative. All of the games do not have the same storyline, or even continuing stories, though the original content that Square Enix brings forth is phenomenal. The storyline within Final Fantasy XIV and Heavensward are extremely strong, I feel they rival any other single-player offerings that Square has produced.

ffxiv_1

Since Heavensward launched back in June of 2015, Square Enix has made some dramatic changes including gameplay and world settings. Giving PC players the option to use DirectX 11 as well as upping the graphics on the PS4. The game has since become accessible to all types of newcomers, adding in a feature called the Novice Network, which allows new players to talk to each other. This addition also lets seasoned players who enjoy helping others assist in any questions they have or assist with quests.

Square Enix recently implemented Wondrous Tails, which gives unique and expensive items to
Veteran players who redo older content. This incentive helps to give newer players the information and knowledge they need regarding a dungeon or a boss fight. Another feature that is just phenomenal is how they let you communicate; whether you are in a Free Company (Read: Guild) or just want a small place to chat with you and your friends, Square Enix covered that. Besides having your typical guild, party, and whispers, you also have an invention called Linkshells. These Linkshells allow you to make private channels for you and your friends to communicate, even if you are in different free companies.

So what would I like to see more of, or changed in Stormblood? For starters, I would really enjoy seeing a third dungeon added to the content patches. As it stands, Final Fantasy XIV releases two new dungeons every content patch. Within these dungeons are the means of getting new gear via tokens. When it takes weeks on end to gather all of the tokens needed for your new gear, having a third dungeon to run breaks up a lot of that monotony – as you are forced to grind out the two new dungeons if you are currently up-to-date with the highest tier of items available from the previous patch.

ffxiv_3
A different way to go about grinding for gear tokens would be to add more ways to earn them such as through gathering professions or crafting professions. I would say by gathering specific items, you could choose between the crafter or gatherer specific tokens or the tokens to gear up. Another big change I would like to see is regarding Relic Weapons, or your classes ultimate weapon. I would love to see the quests for the relic be more story based and less of a token grind like aforementioned new dungeon releases since we have to do that with high end content.

In the vanilla game of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, the relic quests were based on heroes of old that lived within the lore. Expanding the storylines or even creating new ones that are specific to the class would be interesting and create an interactive experience for the player. The quest itself I would see as being fairly lengthy, as it is a Final Fantasy game; just a lot less focused on the grind of tokens and more focused on the story.

Is there any changes you would like to see in Final Fantasy XIV when Stormblood goes live? Let us know!

Final Fantasy XIV and Yo-Kai Watch crossover this Summer

Posted on May 25, 2016 by Jason Nason

In an interesting move and a further reach of the Yo-Kai Watch brand, Square Enix has teamed up with Level-5 and have announced a new collaboration. Yo-Kai Watch characters are coming to Final Fantasy XIV. The time limited event will launch this summer and feature a total of 13 different Yo-kai from Yo-Kai Watch, including Jibanyan and Whisper. Players will be able to earn special quest rewards, such as original Yo-kai themed weapons, mounts, and minions.

As part of the collaborative effort with Final Fantasy XIV, Chocobo and Moogle will also appear as “Chocobonyan” and “Mooglenyan” in Yo-Kai Watch 3: Sushi and Yo-Kai Watch 3: Tempura which will launch in Japan for the Nintendo 3DS.

FFXIV Sephirot Fight PAX East Gameplay

Posted on May 10, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Square Enix brought the latest primal battle from Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward to PAX East last month, giving non-subscribers and newcomers to the game the chance to take down Sephirot on the show-floor.

The newest threat to Eorzea might be several months old – being introduced in late February – but the fight took center stage at Square Enix’s PAX East booth. Two rows of 4 demo stations were lined back to back with one player’s screen being broadcast on a large screen facing the crowd outside Square’s booth.

Check out two minutes of my favorite class, the bard, taking on this behemoth!

Final Fantasy XIV / Phantasy Star Online 2 Crossover Announced

Posted on March 21, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

FFXIV X PSO2

Two super popular MMORPG games will be coming together for a collaborative event later this summer. A small bit of the world of Eorezea from Square Enix’s popular Final Fantasy XIV will come to SEGA’s galactic sci-fi MMORPG Phantasy Star Online in the form of new equipable items based upon the FFXIV Miqote race and an Odin boss fight encounter.

FFXIV producer Naoki Yoshida (known within the FFXIV community as Yoshi-P) made a special guest appearance at today’s Phantasy Star Online 2 fan event in Tokyo alongside the surprise announcement. The crowd in attendance reportedly began chanting “Yoshi OH OH OH OH OH” as he took the stage at the end of the PSO2 celebration announcements held on the main stage.

Alongside the announcement Square Enix / SEGA released a collaborative trailer that showcases the Odin boss fight. In it we can see an entire raid party take on the iconic black armor clad Final Fantasy boss, doing their best to use PSO2’s energy based weapon against their imposing, horse riding opponent. Ultimately the entire party falls victim to Odin’s iconic zantetsuken attack, which wipes out the entire party in one swift hit.

FFXIV_Odin

No word if FFXIV will be getting PSO2 cross over items, however, that game’s fanfest isn’t until later this year. As of right now, PSO2 isn’t even available in the West. The PSO2 X FFXIV crossover items / encounter are expected to be released sometime in Summer 2016.

Final Fantasy XIV Devs Preview Thordin Upcoming Extreme Encounter

Posted on November 3, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Final Fantasy XIV patch 3.1 – the first major content drop since this past June’s release of Heavensward  – arrives in just a week’s time and the devs have given us a small glimpse at the brand new extreme version of Thordan’s Reign.

Spoiler warning for the end of FFXIV: Heavensward follow

As players who have finished the main story question know the game ends with a pretty epic encounter between the Warrior of Light, King Thordin – now in his primal form – and the Knights of the Round.  Based upon this epic final encounter Eorzya’s Minstrel Bard has constructed an even more fantastical tale of survival with the extreme version.  This 8 player encounter will require you to have at least ilevel 190 – so make sure you have all of your drops of Alexander collected or gear from the Tomes of Essoterics before taking on Thordin EX.

Still no details on what Thordan’s Reign Extreme will drop… perhaps an ilevel 210 weapon? We’ll find out once FFXIV 3.1 drops on November 10th. Until then check out some screenshots from the encounter that Square Enix released.

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 3.1 Release Date, Producer Q&A and Trailer

Posted on October 27, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Square Enix’s first huge update for Final Fantasy XIV: Heavansward, patch 3.1, arrives on November 10th the publisher has announced. Alongside the announcement of the release date Square also provided a Q & A during the most recent Letter From The Producer Live and a very informative 7 minute trailer giving players a rundown of everything that will be included in 3.1!

Patch 3.1 As Goes Light So Goes Darkness brings with it a lot of brand new content. The story threads left hanging after the completion of FFXIV: Heavansward will be continued in the new main story quests,  New exploratory missions for free-companies (guilds) will be available, the first of which is known as The Diadem.  One brand new dungeon will be added for level 60 players as well – Saint Mociane’s Arboretum.   Possibly one of the most exciting additions, which we detailed previously when it was unveiled is the new 24 man raid known as the Void Ark.

Make sure you check out the trailer I’ve included in the embedded player before the jump. I’ve also included some of the details from the official Q&A thread from the Letters From The Producer Live that I thought would be of interest for returning players. I know that I’ll be re-subbing for the new raid content, and hey new story quests are always welcomed 😀

If November 10th sounds familiar – it is also the same day that Fallout 4 and StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void are released. It’s going to be a big day for games!

Final Fantasy XIV 3.1 Patch Detailed

Posted on September 21, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Have you finished the main story quest for Final Fantasy XIV: HeavansWard and plowed your way through Alexander Savage and want to know when you’ll get your next big injection of new content? During the “Letter From The Producer Live” at the Tokyo Games Show producer Yoshi-P revealed that Final Fantasy XIV 3.1 will be launching this November!

The brand new 24-person raid is known as The Void Ark and you may have seen it – the black and purple ship flying off in the distance in several of the Ishgaurd zones. Void Ark will be structured similar to the Crystal Tower storyline – which means we may see several different raids strung together through common story elements as the 3.X patch series continues to be rolled out.  In terms of party composition The Void Ark will utilize 3 groups consisting of 1 tank, two healers and five DPS.

FFXIV_Patch2

As mentioned in previous Letters From The Producer Live Free Companies (FFXIV’s guilds) will be able to pool their resources together to build airships to go on adventures together. These new Airship Exploration Missions are filled with powerful enemies that will surely give even the most geared out lvl 60s a run for their gil! Your adventurer along with 23 other players are charged with the task of taking down targeted monsters to win spoils for your free company. If you aren’t in a Free Company there will be publically available airships to take you on these new exploration missions.

If you want all the other details make sure to check out the official FFXIV TGS Page or check out our original source. We’ll have more on Final Fantasy XIV “As Goes Light So Goes Darkness” as we approach its November release date.
