Take A Look Back At The PlayStation Start Up Sounds

Posted on December 2, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Our console’s start-up sound effects can easily become etched in our memories, you’ll probably hear the starting roar of your favorite console a few hundred times – if not more. To celebrate the recent European launch of the PlayStation 4 Sony has released a short montage featuring the starting sounds for all four of their home consoles from the last 18 years.

Hearing the PlayStation one boot up effect again reminds me of the closing days of ’98 where I worked my way through Resident Evil 2 slaying zombies for hours. I didn’t even own the game I’d just keep renting it over and over; my parents must have hated me. As for the PS2, this video reminds me of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City as that game came out right when I was old enough to buy mature titles. I didn’t own a PS3 until Metal Gear Solid IV: Guns of The Patriots came out in 2008.

Sony Recaps The Life of PlayStation In 3 New Videos

Posted on February 19, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Sony’s PlayStation brand has stood the test of time, lasting more than 15 years, despite some out of the gate hiccups with the current generation. It is widely rumored that the PlayStation 4 will be unveiled tomorrow at the “See The Future” event in New York City. To drum up excitement Sony released a series of four retrospective videos on their YouTube channel highlighting various accomplishments. Were you around for the launch of the original PlayStation in ’95?

Each video only runs about 2 minutes and length and while they are slickly produced they do kind of gloss over a few things. Aside from the PS Video, most of them are recaps of the system’s launch with some PR sales number and hit game titles thrown into the mix. The accomplishment of games key to the systems’ success such as Metal Gear Solid, Crash Bandicoot and the PS2-era JRPGs are only glossed over, in a favor of news footage. Seems like a bit of a lost opportunity.

Regardless of their content, it is neat to look back and reminisce about everything Playstation. Check out the videos after the jump.Read More

Wing Commander Retrospective

Posted on April 30, 2012 by Eric Bastelak

What can you say about the Wing Commander franchise? Besides the fact that it was one of the first space fighter simulation games ever, oh and in the sea of garbage that was FMV (full motion video) era of gaming, Wing Commander stood out. This was a diamond found amongst all the sewage. High billing actors like Mark Hamill and Malcom Mcdowell. I first heard about Wing Commander from a unique source. A fantastic V-loger Spoony, on his website The Spoony Experiment being a long time WC fan Spoony did a hilarious review of the painfully bad Wing Commander movie. During this review Spoony consistently talked about what made the Wind Commander games so amazing. After seeing this I took a trip over to GOG.com where I purchased Wing Commanders 1-4. After playing through all of them I was blown away. I wanted more but since the last true entry in the series WC4 there was no more to be had.Read More
