New trailer for Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido

Posted on May 16, 2018 by Jason Nason

A new trailer for Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido provides a deeper look at this delicious action-RPG-puzzle game, coming to the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS on June 8th.

Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido combines bright, anime art style with frenetic yet tactical gameplay – centered on consuming as much sushi as possible – delivering a veritable conveyor belt loaded with surprise and delight.

Imagine a world in which the sinister Empire controls the consumption of sushi with an iron grip and denies any mention of it to all inhabitants of the vanquished Republic. Players assume the role of orphaned hero Musashi (playable as either a male or a female avatar), embarking on a grand adventure to restore sushi to the world. Meet a colorful cast of characters along the way, including treacherous local bully Kojiro, musclebound Imperial enforcer General Kodiak and beautiful sushi assassin Celia.

Battles are contested between two opponents, each with access to three of their own conveyor belts of sushi, plus a seventh shared belt in the middle. By linking (aka eating) sushi plates of the same color, players create stacks that can then be hurled at their opponent. The frenetic sushi-eating action is coupled with significant tactical depth. Players will encounter divine beings, called Sushi Sprites, which provide special skills that can be chained together in battle for a variety of powerful combos. There are more than 50 Sushi Sprites to befriend, many of which can evolve into more powerful forms.

In addition to the rich and wacky single-player adventure, two players can challenge each other to local multiplayer battles on a single Nintendo Switch system. With the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, players can battle locally with their own systems and games. So, grab your chopsticks and prepare for battle when Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido launches on June 8th.

Kirby Star Allies | Nintendo Switch Review

Posted on May 3, 2018 by Meghan Kass

I have followed the Kirby franchise since I was but a wee lass. Since about the age of five years old, Kirby has been in my life. I remember playing through Kirby’s Dreamland with my older sibling and being mesmerized by the environments, enemies and of course the little pink guy himself, Kirby. I always have been a fan of platformers, and Kirby’s particular style of gameplay has always resonated with me. In my experience, it has been a bit of a slower pace, but much more relaxing than other platformers, even at the hardest bosses. Even though Kirby has gone through many interesting experiments over the years with style and difficulty, they have for the most part been at least pleasant to play and look at. Does the new entry, Kirby Star Allies fall among the best of the franchise? Or is it just another average platforming starring everyone’s favorite pink puff ball?

For the most part, Kirby Star Allies is much like classic Kirby entries such as Kirby’s Adventure or Kirby’s Dreamland. You go through various levels and platform your way to the end. You inhale enemies to either use them as projectiles or absorb their powers for fun new abilities. At the end of each level is the classic bonus jump game, which to this day, I am still bad at.

The plot revolves around and evil entity from a distant world that has possessed the likes of Meta Knight, Dedede and many other characters. Kirby was also hit, but instead of being possessed he has gained the ability to befriend his enemies and gain help to find and defeat the evil that is engulfing the universe.

One notable difference is the fact that yes, this can be a local co op experience. You can recruit either enemy AI or your real life friends to help you in your fight to save the world, and even other worlds, from evil. You can have various forms of help like those who can assist you with fire, ice, water, rock or even sweeping! Each has their use and sometimes you need them to access specific parts of the level with a particular power. It won’t be hard to tell which ability you will need to use, but sometimes you will just be the bad luck of not having the right power at the right time.

Another difference is the combined ability feature. You can have yourself and your allies combine to work together to make a bridge for a mischievous key carrying waddle dee to open new doors for you, a friend circle to plow through enemies, a friend star to fly through levels and shoot enemies mid air and more! These are fun to initiate and fun to make use of when prompted.

But what you really want to hear about is the abilities, after all, that is what Kirby is most known for.  I am happy to say, there are quite a few new abilities to be found in Star Allies. My personal favorite is the artist copy ability, which allows you to splatter paint at enemies and also paint masterpieces that give you health boosts which helps if you’re fighting a boss. You also have new abilities like spider to trap enemies and festival which destroys enemies on the screen. There are more, but I won’t give them away as part of the fun is discovering them for yourself.

Among new abilities are also new mini games that you can play with friends. One is a tree cutting contest using the joy con motion controls, the other is a home run contest hitting meteors with your charged bat while avoiding things such as spiders and bugs.

Overall, this is another strong entry for Kirby and if you have been a fan of the platforming part of the franchise, you will love this game’s charm and game play as well. I recommend purchasing this game and experiencing the joy of Kirby by yourself or with a good friend and sharing the love.

Nintendo’s E3 2018 Plans Include Splatoon 2 World Championship, Smash Bros and More

Posted on April 30, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

With six weeks until the kickoff of E3 2018 Nintendo has provided an outline of what exactly fans can expect during the show. For those that can make it to Los Angeles and have the credentials (or cash) for a pass – that means a chance to go hands-on with the newly announced Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch as well as a selection of 3rd party titles. As in prior years, Nintendo will also be hosting a sponsored tournament – this year it’s the Splatoon 2 World Invitation – and of course the now traditional Nintendo Direct E3 presentation.

Nintendo’s first competitive showcase will be the Splatoon 2 World Invitation which will take place on Monday June 11th from 3PM – 6PM PST. If you’ve already checked out Nintendo’s official E3 website, yes the artwork for the Splatoon 2 World Invitation looks to be directly inspired by the 1990s Nintendo World Championship. Will winners receive a golden commemorative GameCard that will retail for thousands of dollars on eBay?

Right after the Splatoon festivities end on June 12th is the gameplay debut of the brand new Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch (which we still don’t know the final name of). Alongside professional players, fans will also be given the chance to play the new brawler thanks to a sponsored cosplay competition that the Big N is throwing. No further details yet on what exactly will be playable for Smash Bros how folks can enter the cosplay contest – so be on the look out for those details.

As is usual, on Tuesday June 12th the E3 2018 Nintendo Direct video presentation will take place at 9 AM PST. Whatever surprises that the creators of Mario have in store for us will remain a mystery up until the broadcast itself but they have mentioned that they will be focusing on already announced games. Nintendo will also only focus on titles that will be released in 2018 – so no teases for what is to come in 2019!

Possible Games

  • Yoshi (Name not known)
  • Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch
  • Octopath Traveler (Square Enix)
  • Travis Strikes Again (Grasshopper Manufacture)
  • Super Meat Boy Forever
  • Untitled Fire Emblem for Nintendo Switch (Intelligent Systems)

So to recap – here is a shortlist of important dates for E3 2018 when it comes to Nintendo:

Super Smash Bros Tournament – June 12th
Treehouse Live! – June 12th – 15th
Nintendo Direct E3 Presentation – June 12th @ 9 AM PST

New mythical Pokémon Zeraora announced for Ultra Sun and Moon

Posted on April 8, 2018 by Jason Nason

Nintendo revealed a brand new mythical Pokémon today – Zeraora.

This Pokémon creates a powerful magnetic field by emitting strong electric currents from the pads on its hands and feet. It can use this magnetic field to levitate and move through the air at high speed. Its max speed is said to be about the same as that of a lightning strike.

The bio for the Pokémon from the website states that unlike most Electric-type Pokémon, it doesn’t have an organ within its body that can produce electricity. However, it is able to gather and store electricity from outside sources, then use it as its own electric energy. When it uses massive amounts of electricity, its fur stands on end all over its body.

No details on how the Pokémon will be distributed, but hopefully it is via Nintendo Network and now via the Pokémon Newsletter. Despite having an account I never received a newsletter with download codes in March.
