Wargame: European Escalation Giveaway

Posted on May 2, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

International Workers’ Day may have come and gone, but its spirit still lingers here at Broken Joysticks. I, for one, associate the first of May with massive Soviet military Parades. What a sight it must have been to behold the crimson banners fluttering as T-80 tanks rumbled past. In honor of the “good old days,” we’re giving out copies of Wargame: European Escalation. In case you didn’t know, Wargame: European Escalation is an alternate history game where the Cold War goes “Hot.” I don’t mean hot in the nuclear holocaust sense. Rather, the forces of NATO and the Warsaw Pact

Skyrim’s First DLC – Dawnguard – Arrives This Summer

Posted on May 1, 2012 by Rae Michelle Richards

One of 2011’s finest games, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, will receive its first dose of downloadable content with the release of Dawnguard this summer Bethesda has announced. In a similar fashion to Activision’s Call of Duty DLC the Xbox 360 version of Dawnguard will be a timed exclusive. This means that PC and PS3 players will have to presumably wait a few months before getting their hands on it. We know little about Dawnguard‘s content at this time. Bethesda’s blog post regarding the expansion contains just a simple teaser image and the promise that more details will be revealed

Shadowrun Returns is currently planned for release in early 2013.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Set for Nov. 13

Posted on May 1, 2012 by Andrew Minott

Confirming public speculation, Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops will be receiving a sequel on November 13, 2012. At the time of this writing Callofduty.com‘s UK page has sparse info, such as the preview still of a currently unplayable trailer on YouTube, and only a small amount of promotional copy promising that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 takes place in “a near future, 21st Century Cold War, where technology and weapons have converged to create a new generation of warfare.” Stay tuned to Brokenjoysticks.net for more information when Activision makes their official announcement this evening, and their website stops

Daily Giveaway: Magicka May Day

Posted on May 1, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

I hope that you have all survived Walpurgis Night unscathed and are ready for an excellent first of May. In the past, the first of May was May Day, a springtime festival. It’s also International Workers’ Day. This year is different. May 1, 2012 will be remembered (by a few of you) as the day that began Broken Joysticks’ epic month of game giveaways and contests. Most of the staff of Broken Joysticks are somewhat puzzled by what the May Day was all about. However, I have it on good authority that it involved wizards, breaking the fourth wall, and

Wing Commander Retrospective

Posted on April 30, 2012 by Eric Bastelak

What can you say about the Wing Commander franchise? Besides the fact that it was one of the first space fighter simulation games ever, oh and in the sea of garbage that was FMV (full motion video) era of gaming, Wing Commander stood out. This was a diamond found amongst all the sewage. High billing actors like Mark Hamill and Malcom Mcdowell. I first heard about Wing Commander from a unique source. A fantastic V-loger Spoony, on his website The Spoony Experiment being a long time WC fan Spoony did a hilarious review of the painfully bad Wing Commander movie.

Rayman Legends Boasts Exclusive Wii-U Functionality

Posted on April 27, 2012 by Jesse Lord

First things first.  If you haven’t gotten your grubby mitts on Rayman Origins, spectacular game that it is, go do that.  Right now.  I’ll wait. Done?  Great.  Ok, so there has been a rumbling that Ubisoft is working on a follow-up to that refreshing platformer, and the news has broken by way of a leaked trailer for Rayman Legends, which you will see embedded below the jump.  This in and of itself is great news – unfortunately Rayman Origins, while generally critically–acclaimed across platforms, did not see spectacular sales and therefore the likelihood of a sequel seemed to be but

STALKER 2 Developers Give Rise to New MMO

Posted on April 26, 2012 by Matthew Regier

Since the now defunct developer of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, GSC Game World has gone under many of the former employees have taken the initiative to form a new company, Vostok Games. This new studio has put themselves hard to work working on their first big release, a free-to-play MMO called Survarium. In which this game will be developed on the new Vostok Engine and planned for a late 2013 release. “Despite no official continuation of [S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2] it looks like the ideas and spirit will live on in the team’s new game – ‘Survarium'” said the developers through a tweet under

Paradox CEO hosting a live stream demo of Warlock today

Posted on April 26, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

Fredrik Wester, the fun loving CEO of Paradox Interactive, will host a live streaming demo of Warlock: Master of the Arcane today. My understanding is that Warlock is a bit like Civilization V, except with Warlocks mixed in, as well as the types of things that spell casters tend to attract (fireballs, vampires, the Spanish inquisition, etc). If you are curious about this upcoming empire builder, then check out the live stream at this link. The demonstration will take place at 11am PDT / 8pm CEST. In the meantime, you can watch a trailer for the game after the jump.

Crytek: Next-gen used games block ‘would be absolutely awesome’

Posted on April 25, 2012 by Jesse Lord

In an article over at CVG, we learn that Crysis dev Crytek have some interesting thoughts about next gen, specifically as it pertains to keeping Piracy down and preventing the used game market from stealing their cash monies. Rasmus Hojengaard, Crytek’s director of creative development, issued the following statement in an interview over at the site: “The worst thing that can happen is they make something that’s very complex for developers, regardless of how awesome it might theoretically be,” he said. “So getting hardware that allows you to quickly get prototypes up and running, and any kind of scalability they

Dead Space 1 and 2: Five Whole Dollars Each on Steam

Posted on April 25, 2012 by Andrew Minott

Until 2pm Pacific on Thursday, April 26, Dead Space and Dead Space 2 are $4.99 each on Steam. Both of these games are incredible, and you should have them. The original is (if we’re being honest) better than the sequel, but that is akin to saying that $100 is better, objectively, than $93. What I’m telling you is that with this deal you can have $193 for $9.98 plus tax. This metaphor got unwieldy. Go kill necromorphs.
