Jax Brings In Nearly Half A Million Dollars

Posted on May 19, 2012 by Andrew Minott

To update you on a previous story, Riot Games has announced that at the completion of their fundraiser on Friday, over $480,000 came in due to the participation of over 140,000 contributors, “100 percent of which will go to Make-A-Wish America and Make-A-Wish International in Joe’s name.”

This fundraising plan by Riot mirrors one they ran a year ago to benefit the earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan, where over 50,000 League of Legends players helped raise over $160,000 for the Red Cross.

Indie Royale Returns For Charity

Posted on May 16, 2012 by Andrew Minott

Indie Royale returns with another low-priced bundle of indie games for your indie pleasure, this time benefiting charities chosen by the developers. The Indie Royale Lightning Round All-Charity Pack comes with an incredibly long name, and the following assortment of video games: physics bubbler Osmos, real-life cheatfest B.U.T.T.O.N., rabbinical RPG The Shivah, and Blueberry Garden, which they describe as a “short experimental game about curiosity and exploration.”

Currently, the base price for the bundle is in the low $4 range, and as usual the price will fluctuate based on whether or not customers pay more than the minimum amount or not. If you pay more than $7 (or the equivalent of such in your local currency), you will also receive three bonus music albums: Jake Kaufman’s FX4, Disasterpeace’s Level, and 6955’s IN1ep.

All of the proceeds from this sale will go to benefit Amnesty International, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, ActionAid, and UNICEF.

Tribes: Ascend | Review

Posted on May 14, 2012 by Andrew Minott

It’s like a classic joust in the days of knights and kings.

You skim across the valley floor at 120 kph. High above you, an airborne ally gets hit in the chest by a microscopic sun, sending bits of his armor showering down, and bits of him… best not think about it. Ahead, a flash of light. You see the reflection half a second before the explosive blue disk hums close enough to your head for you to write your name on it. That Blood Eagle bastard is headed straight for you, claiming this crack of earth as his own.

Your assault rifle bursts to life, only a handful of rounds finding their target. Before you can even reload, you and your target have passed each other. You spin, easing to the right to ramp up from a small mound. Your jetpack ignites, teaming up with your momentum to launch you dozens of feet into the air; your dancing partner has done the same. Two more spinfusor disks buzz by you, one of them hitting what’s left of a tree struggling to grow on the edge of the mountain wall. You can’t get a steady shot while you’re both in mid-air, so you switch to your grenade launcher. His shadow and his speed give away where his landing area probably will be, and roll the dice. His toes barely touch dirt before your grenade throws him against a boulder. His momentum is gone, his jetpack is still recharging, and you reload. You land a little rougher than you’d like, but it doesn’t matter much because you just got ran over from behind by a grav cycle.

Thankfully, the respawn timer keeps you away from the mayhem for only a few seconds.

Alan Wake Doubles Down on Steam

Posted on May 8, 2012 by Andrew Minott

Survival thriller Alan Wake is currently on Steam’s Midweek Madness deal, priced at $14.99 from its normal $29.99. This includes the game, which is quite good, and a bonus soundtrack, which ranges from moody background music to cheesy hair metal that will make you feel guilty about how many times you’ve listened to it.

What? I’m not listening to it now. Promise.

Also, May 22 was confirmed as the release date for Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, the stand-alone DLC game that, while not a true sequel, exists to “broaden and expand the universe” of the series. Like the original XBLA realease this is priced at $14.99, but if you pre-order it through Steam you will receive 10% off, with an additional 15% off if you own the original Alan Wake. It’s almost like they planned this.

I’ll run you through the five games in the bundle, so you can know precisely why you ought to spend a value meal’s worth of income to make your life better.

Brain-snacking zombies. Marauding orcs. ‘Wood-for-sheep’ jokes that we say are immature and stupid, but we giggle anyway. Gaming shenanigans aren’t just for these damn video games

Featured on Felicia Day’s Geek & Sundry YouTube channel, TableTop is Wil Wheaton’s bi-monthly show in which he gathers three nerd celebrities (nerdlebrities? [nope.]) to play board games, and Wil was nice enough to record the goings-on for everyone to see.Read More

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Set for Nov. 13

Posted on May 1, 2012 by Andrew Minott

Confirming public speculation, Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops will be receiving a sequel on November 13, 2012. At the time of this writing Callofduty.com‘s UK page has sparse info, such as the preview still of a currently unplayable trailer on YouTube, and only a small amount of promotional copy promising that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 takes place in “a near future, 21st Century Cold War, where technology and weapons have converged to create a new generation of warfare.”

Stay tuned to Brokenjoysticks.net for more information when Activision makes their official announcement this evening, and their website stops blocking IP’s from accessing certain sections of it.
