Super Smash Bros for Wiiu/3DS Will Not Support Gamecube Controllers

Posted on June 19, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

If you’ve got a drawer full of GameCube controllers, just itching to be used once the latest Super Smash Bros  is released in 2014, you might be a little disappointed given the news that the game will not support GameCube controllers. The GameCube was originally unleashed upon the masses in November of 2001, after twelve years the fighting community is going to have to get used to new control schemes.

Nintendo’s classic pro controller offers players an option more similar to the Xbox 360 game pad than the GameCube controller, but it might be the best alternative. A lot of huff and puff was made over the layouts offered by the WiiMote when Brawl was released back in 2008.

Every fighting fan has their favorite tools, some use stock controllers, some use special third party controllers designed for their favorite fighters and others still use expensive arcade fight sticks to try and replicate the feel of a coin operated machine.

Given the apparent lack of GameCube support in the next Smash Bros, what will you chose to lay down the beat down.

A few weeks ago we brought you the news that Nintendo has secured the exclusive rights to future Sonic the Hedgehog titles. The first such title, Sonic The Lost World takes cues from both Mario Galaxy and the IOS free to play game Sonic Dash. In this game Sonic is propelled forwards at a constant rate, similar to Sonic Colors, but he also must travel between floating islands, filled with staple items from the Sonic series, such as rings and boost pads.

Check out a brief game play video, originally found on GameTrailers after the jump.Read More

Monolith Soft Developing Open World Xeno Series Game

Posted on June 11, 2013 by Les Major

Seemingly titled X, Monolith Soft is working on a new game that seems to be in or related to the Xenoblade series. This game is an open world title that looks like it has lots of exploration in a wonderful and detailed world. I’m definitely interested in seeing how this one turns out. Of course, all of Nintendo’s main news is awesome, but X was a pleasant surprise!

Check out the trailer after the break for a look at the wild world outdoors, a futuristic city, and even humanoid mecha from the game.Read More

The First Look At Super Smash Bros for Wii U / 3DS

Posted on June 11, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

We’ve waited two years to get our first glimpse at Super Smash Bros for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Wait no longer because during their E3 Direct live-stream Nintendo showed off not one but two trailers featuring gameplay from both versions.

We don’t know about any content difference between the two games but the 3DS version has a very distinct cell shaded style, while the Wii U version looks like Super Smash Bros Brawl on current-generation HD steroids. In terms of gameplay, it’s pretty similar to previous games in the franchise – at least from the four or so minutes they broadcast. No new items or game changing mechanics, like Brawl’s  final smashes, were shown. We also don’t know how the two versions will connect together, either.

Oh, you want to know about new characters? Joining the fisticuffs are an avatar from the Animal Crossing series and a certain beloved CapCom character who has seen some better days. No, we won’t spoil it – just watch the trailers below.Read More

Mario Kart 8 Slides On To Wii U In Spring 2014

Posted on June 11, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Equip your best turtle shell and get ready to practice your power slide because Mario Kart 8 for the Nintendo Wii U has been announced. The latest entry in the long running franchise is set for release during the Spring of 2014!

Mario Kart 8 on the surface looks like an amalgamation of Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 7. Motorcycles and hang gliders return from each respective game but that isn’t the only trick NIntendo has up its sleeve. A new anti-gravity mechanic allows Mario, Yoshi, Peach & Crew to race along the walls, underwater and even upside down on the bottom of tracks!

Check out Iwata-San’s explanation of Mario Kart 8’s gameplay after the jump, We’ve also got an embedded trailer shown seperately during Nintendo’s E3 live-stream.

Injustice: Gods Among Us | Review

Posted on April 30, 2013 by Broken Joysticks

I can say without a doubt that there are an infinite number of universes.  Some are just like our own… but for one or two significant events, exactly the same.

These words stated by Lex Luthor introduce the story  for Injustice: Gods Among Us.  Published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and developed by NetherRealm Studios, who are commonly known as the creators of Mortal Kombat. The game was released across on the PlayStation 3, Wii U, and Xbox 360 on April 16, 2013, and this review is based on the Xbox 360 version of the game. Can NetherRealm studios deliver a great fighter like their Mortal Kombat reboot? Read on.Read More

Lego City Undercover | Review

Posted on April 21, 2013 by Les Major

Lego City Undercover is two things, and does both very well. It is an all new Lego adventure in the theme and concept of your favourite titles to date, improving on that design. The game is also possibly the first youth friendly Grand Theft Auto inspired title. It really ends up feeling like you’re getting two games in one with all this content. It took me over 24 hours to get through the story, and I still have side objectives around the city to complete.

Undercover focuses on Chase McCain, a police officer just returning to Lego City after years away. In true GTA fashion, this brings you into the world not knowing how it has changed, either. So you’re exploring along with your character. There is very little I took issue with in Lego City Undercover; I really did love the game. It begins with a broadcast from a radio station, and this is quite a tease since the game itself includes no radio stations. So much otherwise reflects GTA wonderfully. The music in Undercover is great, but for those big action scenes that called for it, they could have faded out the radio stations and got back to the original soundtrack.Read More

Injustice: Gods Among Us On The Wii U GamePad

Posted on March 29, 2013 by Les Major

At the recent WB Interactive press event we attended to check out Injustice I was able to confirm the role the Wii U GamePad would play NetherRealm’s new fighter. Fortunately it’s quite a solid concept mainly focusing on displaying your characters special moves on the view screen. This is a great way to keep you in the action and allow reference at a quick glance. Gamers can also switch from TV to GamePad play if they wish, allowing for play on the controllers screen.

Otherwise the Wii U version will control like it’s PS3 and Xbox 360 counterparts. I unfortunately forgot to ask about multiplayer on the Wii U version but some game sites are reporting it as a two player game. We’ll definitely update gamers on the status as soon as we know.

Injustice: Gods Among Us is due out April 16th.

LEGO City Undercover Released and New Launch Trailer

Posted on March 19, 2013 by Les Major

The Wii U title that everyone has been waiting for is finally available! Gamers take on the role of undercover detective Chase McCain as he pursues criminal mastermind Rex Fury. Combining the stud collecting adventure of previous LEGO titles and the open world concept we’ve seen developing and improving through games like LEGO Lord of the Rings.

Developed by Traveller’s Tales for Nintendo, LEGO City Undercover swaps multiple characters for outfits Chase can disguise himself with to gain access to new areas with their unique abilities. The game has focused areas like previous LEGO titles in which the missions take place, but there is a city out there to explore as well.Read More

Assassin’s Creed IV Trailer Revealed

Posted on March 4, 2013 by Jason Nason

Ubisoft revealed the first official trailer for their upcoming game Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag early this morning. The trailer is very much a teaser that features a pirate captain describing the main character of the game.

The year is 1715. Pirates rule the Caribbean and have established their own lawless Republic. Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag introduces Edward Kenway, a brash rebel Pirate Assassin. His fight for glory has earned him the respect of legends like Blackbeard, but also drawn him into the ancient war between Assassins and Templars, a war that may destroy everything the pirates have built. Game Party Champions | Review

Posted on March 4, 2013 by Les Major

If you’re looking for a collection of mini games that use various features of the Wii U GamePad, Game Party Champions (hereafter GPC) is an interesting mix. You’re given a set of eight games and currently the game is selling for as low as $30 or less. That isn’t bad, all things considered. When the game first came out, I found it a little hard to recommend at its full price point, but as closer to a budget title, there is fun to be found in GPC for the Wii U.Read More

Cliff Bleszinski talks State of the Industry

Posted on February 26, 2013 by Jason Bassett

According to Cliff Bleszinski, it seems as though the time is not right to be a console developer. That’s what Bleszinki recently said during an interview with GameIndustry.biz. In his interview Bleszinski states that:

“This business has not been in a state of transition like it is right now since the video game crash of the ’80s”. He goes on to say: “”I really think we’re in a massive state of turmoil. I think Nintendo could possibly be faced with the situation of becoming a company that only makes software moving forward. I think Sony and Microsoft are about to come to major blows. But at the same time, people love playing games on their iPad. The PC is going through a wonderful renaissance right now. I think we’re ready to do digital download games all the time…I just want to see what happens. In regards to the industry, it’s like the Super Smash Bros. of business right now, and I want to see if Peach or Mario wins.”Read More
