Jesse Rapczak from Studio Wildcard Answers ARK Community Questions

Posted on May 2, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Ark: Survival Evolved

At PAX East 2016 we got the chance to ask Jesse Rapczak from Studio Wildcard some questions from the ARK: Survival Evolved community. Topics varied from: Will we ever see popular community mods in the console version of the game? Will we ever get Greek Fire throwables? And most importantly – Why are canons so OP?

Surprisingly Studio Wildcard had a major announcement that happened to coincide with our interview – that Primitive+ and The Center will both becoming to the Xbox One version of ARK: Survival Evolved.  The Center, a fantasy themed map that more than doubles the playable space within ARK will become an official map in both the Xbox One and PC versions of the game later this month. PlayStation 4 players will get access to both mods when that version of the game goes live later this year.

Regarding Primitive+ Cedric Burke, Community Mod Manager at Studio Wildcard wrote on the Xbox News Wire:

When I first opened the development kit and began creating Primitive+, I only had one goal in mind: Provide people with a more immersive experience by expanding upon the primitive nature of the game. Little did I know it would present an opportunity of a lifetime – to have my work seen and played by millions of people. A lot of my childhood dreams were realized simply by opening up the development kit.

Do A Barrel Roll With These Two Star Fox Zero Gameplay Videos

Posted on April 28, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Star Fox Zero

Earlier in the week, after all of the PAX East madness had subsided, my wife & I decided to do a co-op stream of Star Fox Zero. This take on the Star Fox series, the first console release since 2005, brings with it a unique control scheme that has players looking at the Wii U game pad and television screen simultaneously.

Our full review is still incoming, but for now I hope you’ll enjoy these two videos covering the game’s tutorial section and first real missions. In this co-op setup my wife controlled the Arwing’s movements with a Wii Remote and I used the Wii U game pad to control the artillery.

CAN’T LET YOU DO THAT, STAR FOX!

Necropolis Hands-on Video & Details

Posted on April 23, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Delving into the darkest dungeons of gaming can be a fools errand for those who are unaware of their surroundings. Washington based developer Harebrained Schemes hope to take the concept of a challenging dungeon crawler and turn it on it’s head with the addition of rogue-like elements in their upcoming game Necropolis.

Each dungeon in Necropolis is procedurally generated with new item, weapon and enemy placements. The player is tasked with advancing down the dungeon’s many levels, with each floor bringing of a challenge than the last. Upon death the player loses all of their collected weapons and power-ups save for hidden “tomes” – which provide a small skill increase that persists between plays troughs.

The final version of Necropolis will be released on Steam later this summer. Check out our hands on game-play video featuring Harebrained Schemes’ community manager below.

ARK: Survival of the Fittest Video Interview With Jesse Rapczak

Posted on March 25, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Studio Wildcard, the minds behind last year’s smash Steam hit ARK: Survival Evolved have taken the concepts from their first prehistoric title and fashioned what they call a M.O.S.A or Multiplayer Online Survival Arena. Ark Survival of the Fittest pits a number of different players in  Survival Evolves‘ world map and gives them a limited number of time to craft weapons, tame dinosaurs all in a bid to be the last one standing.

We got a chance to sit down and talk with Studio Wildcard co-founder Jesse Rapczak about the challenges of adapting the ARK world to this new game type, how tamable dinosaurs change the pace of the game in relation to other Battle Royale style games and just why did Studio Wildcard release Survival of the Fittest with no monetary model?

Check it out below:

Hands On With Adventure Quest 3D & A Chat With Artix

Posted on March 24, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Adventure Quest is one of those intellectual properties that feels timeless, not in the fact that it has never advanced, but in the sense that it has always just kind of been around in one form or another since 2002. At GDC 2016 I got the chance to sit down with a member of the Artix development team working on the game, as well as play a pre-beta version of their new cross platform MMO, Adventure Quest 3D.

After a successful Kickstarter campaign which raised almost double their initial goal, totalling over $368 000 USD, Artix Entertainment is busy reimagining their classic Adventure Quest property for a new dimension – the 3rd dimension!  At its core AQ3D is a cross platform MMORPG that appears very reminiscent of early WoW – that means lots of bright vibrant outfits and tons of people casting any number of spells.

AQ1

Right now the game is still in a pre-beta state which means that there might be some kinks to work out before it is ready for the general public. The art team have been working over time to not only make a few fan favorites 3-dimensional, like the box goblins, but also create an entire line-up of new monsters and races unique to AQ3D. In the build I played 3 different classes were selectable, with the Warrior class being the one I chose but there will be many more classes available in the final build.

The instances in AQ3D are also scalable meaning if you want to spend 10 minutes on your way home from work killing mobs by yourself you can or you can party up with dozens of other players and take part in the hardcore mode raids. Players will also be able to summon their friends and if they are not at your level the game’s “sidekick system” will automatically scale their level up to match yours.

AQ2

Probably the best part of AQ3D aside from its fun real time combat and colorful art style is the fact that the game is cross-platform. You can run an instance on your phone and instantly switch to a laptop or desktop without anyone knowing. At launch it will support Windows, Mac, iOS and Android – I did ask about a Linux client and was told that the devs get a lot of requests! The game is being built on Unity, so presumably a Linux client can’t be out of the question if the demand is there.

When I sat down with one of the developers from Artix Entertainment I wasn’t expecting to be greeted with such enthusiasm. As you can clearly see in the embedded video below, the folks making this game clearly have a passion for AQ and its dedicated fan base.

Posted on February 22, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Plants Vs Zombie Garden Warfare 2

Electronic Arts is set to release their sequel to 2014’s Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare tomorrow and I’m currently playing the game for review. While I won’t spoil most of the alterations, additions and returning content that Plants Vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare  has I thought it’d be a good idea to share some footage from the Xbox One version of the game.

The three videos below will give you a taste of the multiplayer battles from each side – Plans & Zombies – and footage taken from the single player’s first escort mission.

Look out for our final verdict on the game tomorrow morning when it hits retail!

The Trailer features a good look at both the Enemies and the terminators.

The board game has also seen two turn based PC game releases in the last 10 years, the last of which (also called space hulk) was quite good if you are a fan of Turn Based RPG games.

This game looks to be much more action based, following on the heels of the successful release of Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide this game is also a squad based tactical FPS which will feature a series of weapons, and an RPG like unlock system for player abilities. Galactic Civilizations 2 gets surprise massive patch

Posted on December 31, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

It seems this is a month of reviving older games with massive patches. First we had a massive patch to Dwarf Fortress, and now fan favorite massive space RTS Glactive Civilizations 2 (2006, Stardock software) is getting what can only be called a full re-work patch. 2.20 is what the patch official name is.  the patch notes are after the jump but they take up a full three pages of text in the post on the developers website.  Perhaps this is the start of something new? An age of patching fan favorite but out of date games with still active communities.

Version 2.20 makes an asston of changes to the sci-fi strategy game. Some of which are fan suggested and some of which have already been modded by the community. Stardock’s CEO Brad Wardell says that it “was awesome being able to work with the fans to integrate years of their own mods and tweaks into the base game. They also gave me a long list of areas where they thought I could improve the AI, which I used to dig into the now 10 year old AI source code base to implement”.

Hit the jump for the full pathc notes

Posted on November 23, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

The final video in the JUST CAUSE 3 Developer Diary series takes a look at the technology behind the game: the Avalanche Engine. Talking about the combination of mechanics the engine allows for, procedural destruction models and enemy AI behaviours, the final video is a fantastic insight into how the Avalanche Studios team has brought JUST CAUSE 3 to life.

“The ability to create a world of this density, complexity and size – that alone is something that makes the Avalanche Engine stand out.” said Linus Blomberg, CTO at Avalanche Studios.

Take a look at the full engine dev diary down below.
