Double Dragon Neon | Review

Posted on November 5, 2012 by Jason Fayta

Version tested:  PlayStation 3

Double Dragon has one of my favorite openings in games:  A babe stands alone in a street and a gang approaches her; a dude steps forward from the gang and he punches the babe straight in the gut. He then hoists her over his shoulder, turns, and walks off with the gang. The garage door of the residence in the background opens, and 1P emerges. He has a Camero by his side, but ignores it. He’s taking this to the streets. Everyone on the street. You’re Billy Lee, and some dudes just took your girl, and you’re going to beat the shit out of everyone that gets in your way until you get her back. It’s this single mindedness and lack of exposition that makes the opening so damn great. It doesn’t matter why they took her–they just took her! And so starts Double Dragon.Read More

Extra Credits Indie Fund Sponsors Its First Game

Posted on November 4, 2012 by Jason Fayta

The Extra Credits Indie Fund has financed the development of its first game: Mental Drift. Thought becomes reality in this puzzle platformerwhere words from the player character’s inner monologue become tools to change the world around him. The game’s first trailer came out today to celebrate its official unveiling with the Extra Credits Indie Fund.

Mental Drift debuted under the Extra Credits banner in August’s Penny Arcade Expo. Attendees were invited to play the demo and share their feedback on the game’s early development. “We want this to be the community’s project,” said James Portnow, Producer of Extra Credits. “A lot of people put money into this fund. We want to realize its full potential.”Read More

Dragon’s Dogma | Review

Posted on October 30, 2012 by Jason Fayta

Editor’s note:  Storms are raging on the east coast of Canada and the United States right now. Here’s a review from our very own Jason Fayta as he looks back on this past spring’s Dragon’s Dogma. Our original content schedule should be back on track soon!

Version tested: PlayStation 3

Capcom, famed developer and publisher that has brought gamers such franchises as Resident Evil and Street Fighter, enters the action role-playing genre on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 with Dragon’s Dogma, a successful foray into fantasy open-world role-playing games.

Taking inspiration from Skyrim, Dark Souls, and Capcom’s own offerings, Monster Hunter and Devil May Cry, Dragon’s Dogma stands out by being derivative of several games and in turn becomes uniquely its own title and hopefully it’ll be the start of a new series.Read More

Dead or Alive 5 | Review

Posted on October 1, 2012 by Jason Fayta

Version tested:  PlayStation 3

Dead or Alive 5 (hereafter DOA5) is now available on consoles, almost seven years after the previous installment, and it doubles as the series’ debut on PlayStation 3. You have to go all the way back to the year 2000 when Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore graced the PlayStation 2 for the last entry on Sony’s hardware. But before I get too far into the review, I want to talk a little about the father of Dead or Alive, Tomonobu Itagaki.

Tomonobu Itagaki, creator and former lead of Team Ninja, unceremoniously resigned from Tecmo (now Tecmo Koei) several years ago. An outspoken developer and studio lead, his games were known for their uncompromising difficulty, impeccable gameplay, voluptuous ladies, and badass ninja. It’s difficult to go wrong with such an excellent mix. Since his departure, the quality of Team Ninja’s output has been questionable at best, with its strongest effort being the Ninja Gaiden 2 remix, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2.  Read More

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 | Review

Posted on September 24, 2012 by Jason Fayta

Version tested:  PlayStation 3

Tekken returns to tag after a 12 year hiatus from consoles with Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (hereafter TTT2), the sequel to, that’s right, Tekken Tag Tournament. 12 years is a long time to wait for a proper follow-up to one of the more popular entries in the venerable Tekken series; does Namco Bandai drop the Tekken Ball or is TTT2 the new King of the Iron Fist?

TTT2 is the eighth main installment in the Tekken series and it is a non-canon entry, like the original Tekken Tag Tournament. TTT2 embraces its dream match premise, and in turn the roster has ballooned to a whopping 59 characters, with six of those available at a later date as free downloadable content. And if you’re wondering, Gon from Tekken 3 is not one of those 59 fighters; you’ll have to make do with Alex if you’re all about fighting dinosaurs.Read More
