Nintendo Reveals Wii-U Controller Aimed At “Hardcore” Gamers

Posted on June 3, 2012 by Kirk Williford

In it’s pre-E3 Nintendo Direct presentation this afternoon, Nintendo revealed that a more traditional controller aimed at multiplatform titles will be available when the system launches.

Dubbed the Wii-U Pro Controller, it looks incredibly similar to an Xbox 360 controller, only with some tweaks to button placement. Something worth noting is that this controller (along with all other Wii-U controllers) will support control stick clicking — a first for Nintendo consoles.

Check Out Our First Glimpse At The Wii U’s Menu

Posted on June 3, 2012 by Rae Michelle Richards

Our first look at the Wiiu’s menu showcases several different aspects of the system. When the system is first turned on players are transported to a menu known as the Miiveruse. On this screen players are able to see a variety of Miis from their friends list, region and those who speak their language from around the world. You are able to get a quick look at what your friends are playing, offering a lot of information at a glance.

Other aspects showcased during the presentation include in game pop-ups where friends are able to leave each other messages within a specific game’s universe. The example shown during the video conference included pop-ups in a Mario world style game. These messages will also be available through the Nintendo 3DS, PC and WiiU Console.

Update:

During a segment of Nintendo direct a small promotional video clip was shown outlining the potential for video conferences between WiiU owners. It is unknown if this feature will be available at launch.

Interestingly the game pad also has a built-in web browser which can be used to broadcast webpages onto a big screen television. Check out several images of the systems menus after the jump.Read More

Nintendo Confirms Near Field Communication For WiiU Gamepad

Posted on June 3, 2012 by Rae Michelle Richards

During today’s Nintendo direct video conference president Satura Iwata confirmed that the Nintendo Wii U Gamepad will support near field communication. We previously speculated that the Wii U tablet would be able to communicate with game cards or figures through NFC technology after an internal ubisoft video leaked out. Mr. Iawata mentioned during the early portion of the conference that the tablet contains both an NFC reader and NFC writer in the lower left-hand section of the game pad.

NFC communication was previously brought the mainstream through Activision’s Skylander series where the technology was used to allow small figures to communicate with the base station.

We’ll have more from the Nintendo direct conference as it continues.
