Report: New Final Fantasy Souls-Like In Development At Team Ninja

Posted on May 26, 2021 by Rae Michelle Richards

According to new reports the Final Fantasy franchise might be branching out in a slightly unexpected direction – the “souls” genre. Going from a party of casters, melee, healers and heroes to a single playable character is quite the departure from what we are used to from Final Fantasy. Sure the series has experimented with a three member setup (XIII) and even a two party setup (Lightning Returns) but the slower paced combat, potential focus on counters and expected difficulty spikes could mean the end result is something entirely unseen in the FF series.

News broke via Fanbyte two days ago that this souls-like title will be titled Final Fantasy: Origin, it is under development at Team Ninja and will be exclusive to the recently released PlayStation 5. Further details have also supposedly come to light via the R/GamingLeakSubreddit where it was revealed that the game will focus on the setting of the first Final Fantasy game from the NES – and a reminder that game didn’t have jobs, bahamut or even Chocobos – so there’s lots of room for new inclusions. Difficulty will apparently be dynamic, meaning that multiple difficulty settings will be offered from the outset. To top this all off, like the Ni-oh games before – a playable Alpha version of the game will be made available for fans to leave feedback before the game launches.

As with anything of this nature – unconfirmed rumours of in-development games in the weeks leading up to E3, take it all with a grain of salt. The fact that other outlets, with much more reach inside of development studios, and other insiders are corroborating this story means there is probably something to it.

E3 will be held on June 12th through the 15th as an online only event. Square Enix will be holding their own presentation showcase during that time.

DISSIDIA: Final Fantasy NT Open Beta Buster Swords On To PSN Today

Posted on January 12, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Warm up your PlayStation hard drives and your prep your reflexes because upcoming fighting title DISSIDIA: Final Fantasy NT has an open beta taking place across the next week. Featuring characters, stages, summons and costumes from the mainline Final Fantasy titles, the latest DISSIDIA title offers players both online and offline challenges, even in the open beta.

There are three broad windows over the next seven days where PlayStation 4 owners can try out DISSIDIA Final Fantasy:

  • From Friday, January 12 @ 6:00 AM PST to Monday, January 15 @ 1:00 PM PST
  • From Monday, January 15 @ 2:00 PM PST to Thursday, January 18 @ 1:00 PM PST
  • From Thursday, January 18 @ 2:00 PM PST to Sunday, January 21 @ 1:00 PM PST

Characters will be rotated in and out throughout the three test periods, so if you don’t find a character that you are particuarly fond of (or in my case probably good with >___>), there’s always a chance your favorite FF heroine or hero will show up during the next window.

Personally I am hoping to try out both Lightening and Y’Shtola – FFXIV being one of the games I’ve played habitually since 2014. I’ll also try my hand at Pretty Boy Combat ™ if Noctis, Cloud or Sephiroth are playable during any of the Open Beta windows.

Oh and as a final note, the download size of the DISSIDIA: Final Fantasy NT Open Beta is quite large – clocking in at just over 25GB.

PlayStation Plus Games For July 2017 Include Until Dawn and Game of Thrones

Posted on June 28, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Following up from June’s offerings of Kill Zone 2 and the first season of Life is Strange, PlayStation Plus brings us yet another pair of AAA games for Sony’s flagship console alongside a solid couple of older games for the PlayStation 3 and two gratis indie titles for the PlayStation Vita.

Direct the actions of 9 teenage friends as they try to survive a horrific encounter with a deadly creature in this unique survival horror / b-movie simulation. Designed with a unique Butterfly Effect mechanic, Until Dawn challenges players to make split-second decisions that alter the course of the game’s narrative – ensuring that you’ll never see all the content the game has to offer in one playthrough.

Also joining Until Dawn is Telltale Game’s full season of Game of Thrones-  based on the popular A Song of Fire and Ice universe by J.R.R Martin. Set between the third and fifth seasons of the television series, this original work focuses on the family members of House Forrester. Like other Telltale titles Game of Thrones allows players to make a number of dialogue & action choices that can have an impact on the game’s narrative. This six episode fantasy tale was so successful that a season 2 is currently in development.

PlayStation 3 owners can indulge in one of Capcom’s underrated fighting series that time has somewhat forgotten with Darkstalkers Resurrection. This collection includes up-rezzed and online-enabled versions of Night Warriors: Darkstalker’s Revenge and Darkstalkers 3 with the same net-code developed by Iron Galaxy Studios that was used for Street Fighter III Third Strike Online.  Owners of Sony’s longest support console can also enjoy the quirky animal platformer Tokyo Jungle as well.

Vita owners might not get a steady supply of content from Sony 1st party developer these days (considering that Sony has referred to the handheld as a “legacy platform”) but two games are coming to Sony’s portable – Element4I and Don’t Die Mr. Robot.

Here’s the full line-up as posted by the PlayStation Blog:

Full Lineup

Until Dawn, PS4
Game of Thrones, PS4
Tokyo Jungle, PS3
Darkstalkers Resurrection, PS3
Element4l, PS Vita
Don’t Die, Mr. Robot, PS Vita (Cross Buy on PS4)

Chronicles of Teddy: Harmony of Exodus | Review

Posted on April 19, 2016 by Jason Nason

I really didn’t know what to expect when I downloaded Chronicles of Teddy: Harmony of Exodus on my Wii U. I had a basic understanding of the story from some pregame coverage, but didn’t know much aside from the nice pixel look of the game. What I got was a beautiful and challenging game.

This game is deeply engaging.

Right off the bat I as blown away by the visuals in the game. This game has stunning and beautiful pixel art, with the whole thing looking and feeling like a modern game with pre-rendered or CG backgrounds, only they’re not. The game is 100% pixel art and it looks gorgeous. The level of detail in everything, from the character sprites, backgrounds, items, and foreground is all done with an eye for the finest detail.

Another element of the game that I loved, before even getting into the gameplay itself is the audio. Usually these elements I leave to the end of the review, but they are so much a part of the game that they can’t be left as an aside.

Not only the music of the game, but the sound effects add so much to the atmosphere of the game. From the creaking of wood, to the soft and gentle sound of the wind though the trees, the sound design of this game is epic. I would easily compare the sound design and music of this game to that of Donkey Kong Country, a game which to this day I enjoy listening to.

It’s that good.
