Posted on May 20, 2018 by Jason Nason

Nicalis has announced a new puzzle fighting game called Crystal Crisis.

Crystal Crisis is presented like a one-on-one fighting game, but instead of pressing buttons to kick and punch, players arrange falling gems into matching colors to clear them from the screen and inflict damage on their opponents. The color-matching combat game for Nintendo Switch features 19 different playable characters, including from Cave Story+, The Binding of Isaac, Code of Princess EX, and more. Joining them will be four newly-created characters from some Nicalis games in development.

Crystal Crisis for Nintendo Switch will be available digitally and physically in Fall 2018 for $39.99.

Animated intro and new gameplay video from Blade Strangers

Posted on April 25, 2018 by Jason Nason

Nicalis has released the animated intro from Blade Strangers, the senses-shattering new one-on-one fighting game from Nicalis, coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Steam in the summer of 2018. They have also released a brand new gameplay video trailer.

Both of these videos can be seen below.

Developed in Japan by Studio Saizensen, Blade Strangers is an arcade-style brawler with intuitive controls and stunning character animation. Ten characters have been revealed for the game so far, including Solange, Ali, Master T and Joe the Liongate from Code of Princess EX; Kawase, Noko and Emiko from Umihara Kawase; and Curly Brace from Nicalis’ indie sensation Cave Story+.

The game is looking to be a slick fighter with stunning visuals. By using 3D models to create the character movement, then rasterizing each frame into a sprite that’s manually touched up by veteran 2D artists, the developers have created breathtaking graphics and animation that combine the appeal of hand-drawn art with the fluidity of high-end CGI. It’s looks stunning.

Check out the two videos below.

2D fighter Blade Strangers coming to Switch/PS4 in 2018

Posted on April 18, 2018 by Jason Nason

Studio Saizensen is bringing Blade Strangers, a hardcore old-school fighting game, to the Nintendo Switch in 2018, though there is no firm date announced yet.

A malevolent force known only as Lina is devouring data from a vast, interdimensional network of servers overseen by sentient computers called ”motes.” In desperation, the motes summon heroes from a variety of parallel game worlds to face off against each other in one-on-one combat. The tournament victor has the potential to be awakened as the Blade Stranger—the savior who can vanquish Lina and protect the motes from further harm!

The streamlined four button control scheme makes it easy for beginners to deal out damage from day one, but the intricate combos, counters and specials give tournament-caliber players plenty of opportunities for frame counting, chain construction and hit-box science.

Fighter roster includes characters from previous Studio Saizensen games (like Code of Princess and Sayonara Umihara Kawase ), Nicalis games (like Cave Story+ ) and other surprise entrants.

Each character has three alternate color settings and their own familiar “home” stage. A proprietary development system transforms 3-D models and animation into 2-D spritework and every frame looks like a gorgeous anime drawing.

The game will have online competition and is touted as having minimum input lag.
