Reminder: Horizon Zero Dawn’s Expansion DLC – The Frozen Wilds – Is Out Today

Posted on November 7, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Just a friendly reminder to all of Aloy’s fans that might read our site that the expansion DLC, Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds is out today on the PlayStation Network.

The Frozen Wilds offers players a completely new winter to explore, an expansion specific main questline, several side quests, new mechanical monsters and three new weapons. For experienced players who might have completed all of the content offered in the original game, The Frozen Wilds offers a chance to learn more about the Banuk tribe outside of the single tribe encampment found within the main game.

I thoroughly enjoyed Horizon Zero Dawn when I played it through with my wife this past summer. Aloy is a relatable and fully fleshed out character and as we played I found myself wanting to learn as much as I could about the mysterious machines, our protagonist and the world she lives in. My wife enjoyed the game so much that when she played through the campaign, she told me about bits and pieces of it, and then joined me for a second 100% playthrough so I could see for myself what made Horizon Zero Dawn so special. I have high hopes for The Frozen Wilds when we get around to it.

Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds is priced at $26.99 CDN, is available on the PlayStation Store and requires the base version of Horizon Zero Dawn to be played, it is not a stand alone expansion.

Analysts Expect Horizon Zero Dawn To Move 8 Million Copies

Posted on February 22, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Sony’s upcoming open world action title Horizon Zero Dawn may sell upwards of 8 million units during its lifetime. According to research firm SuperData Horizon Zero Dawn should move between 4 and six million copies this year alone.

Developed by Guerilla Games, Horizon Zero Dawn has players take on the role of Aloy, a young outcast hunter who must fight off terrifying robotic machines in a post apocalyptic version of earth.  If SuperData’s projections are right than Horizon is going to quickly become one of Sony’s premiere franchises alongside Gravity Rush, Uncharted and third party exclusives like the Tales of franchise.  For some perspective Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was released in May 2016 and it was recently revealed just last month that Naughty Dog’s latest title sold over 8.7 million copies during its’ launch year.

Horizon’s late winter launch is a newer phenomenon for AAA titles, which up until recently would release either just before summer commenced or in the late fall or early winter months. In the past few months we’ve seen AAA games like Resident Evil 7, Tales of Berseria, Gravity Rush 2, Kingdom Hearts 2.8 and For Honor. The year is less than 8 weeks old and it feels like there has been at least one must play title released every week so far in 2017.

SuperData’s CEO explained how the release of Horizon Zero Dawn on February 28th is important as we enter the second half of the current console generation:

“Now that we are in the second half of the current console cycle forces Sony and its rival Microsoft into a price war for the more risk-averse consumers that typically enter the market at this stage. And the release of the Nintendo Switch in early March will further increase the pressure on Sony to remain the platform of choice for the current gamer generation.”

PS4 Pro Enhanced Announced, 4K Videos Available

Posted on September 12, 2016 by Ellen McGrody

Horizon: Zero Dawn on PS4 Pro

PS4 Pro Enhanced

Following last week’s PlayStation Meeting, Sony announced more details about the PS4 Pro. In addition to adding 4k game videos to their YouTube channel, Sony confirmed details concerning PS4 Pro Enhanced. Acting as a new labeling system for game releases, the new logo implies a game uses some or all of the features of the new console.

As discussed last week, the Pro offers graphical enhancements to existing and upcoming PS4 titles. Enhanced will mean that a game takes advantage of any combination of these tweaks. A Pro Enhanced game will offer 4K resolution, HDR capabilities, and/or higher frame-rates. Older titles can offer software updates with these features. Newer games will come with this label on packaging or on PlayStation Store pages.

Because of Polygon‘s reporting, we know developers won’t be able to charge for Enhanced upgrades to older titles. In addition, as Enhanced can entail HDR lighting, users of the original PS4 and the new Slim model will benefit as well.

Gameplay videos are available from Horizon: Zero Dawn, Mass Effect Andromeda, and more. You can view every 4K PS4 Pro video on Sony’s playlist. Note that you’ll need Chrome in order to view 4K YouTube videos on your computer.

Sony’s Mark Cerny demoed the console’s 4K graphics with games such as Horizon: Zero Dawn and Mass Effect Andromeda. Because the console features enhanced hardware, games will be able to employ higher resolutions and greater detail. In addition, HDR lighting is coming to all PS4 models via a software update.

PS4 Pro will make its debut on November 10th for $399.

Horizon Zero Dawn Gets A New E3 Demo From Sony’s Press Conference

Posted on June 14, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Last night at E3 2016 Sony showed off a brand new demo for the recently delayed Horizon Zero Dawn. This latest demonstration showcases our heroine, Aloy, collecting crafting materials and then taking a quest from a near by NPC to save a village from a large techno dinosaur. Our brief glimpse at the game ends with her finding an odd piece of technology that “looks very old” before the screen fades to black.

Multiple collector’s editions have been confirmed for Horizon Zero Dawn – for $70 USD the Horizon Zero Dawn Digital Limited Edition will give players two bonus resources packs, two new outfits and a pair of weapons. Horizon Zero Dawn Digital Deluxe Edition includes all of the above plus Digital Art Book, Exclusive PS4 Theme, Traveler / Keeper / Trader Packs and base Horizon Zero Dawn game.

Horizon Zero Dawn Paris Games Walkthrough

Posted on October 27, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

During the Sony Paris Games Week media briefing developers from Guerrilla Games were on hand to show off about 8 minutes of brand new gameplay footage from the in-development title.

The on stage demonstration showed the main protagonist, Aloy, taking on yet another giant robot creature. As parts began to fly off of it Aloy was able to gather them and later presumably use them as crafting materials.

After the on-stage presentation a similar pre-recorded presentation was uploaded to Sony’s PlayStation YouTube account. Check it out:

Horizon Zero Dawn Looks Absolutely Fantastic

Posted on June 18, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Guerilla Games has been pretty quiet about what shape their next PlayStation 4 exclusive would take. Two years after the release of Killzone: Shadowfall Guerilla took the wraps off of their latest project Horizon Zero Dawn during this week’s PlayStation Media Briefing at E3.  To say that this 7 minute debut trailer has me excited about the future of Sony’s latest platform would be doing Horizon a disservice, it is possibly the freshest new IP I’ve seen in years.Read More
