2013 Canadian Video Game Awards This Saturday

Posted on April 15, 2013 by Jason Nason

The 4th Annual Canadian Videogame Awards will be taking place on Saturday in Vancouver, British Columbia, presented as part of Vancouver Fan Expo. The CVAs were created to honour and celebrate the “best and brightest” in Canadian videogame and feature games from big mainstream titles to smaller indie projects.

If you haven’t heard of the awards don’t worry, you’re not alone. While the annual VGAs which air on Spike every year are fairly well known (if mostly panned by video game fans) the Canadian awards aren’t as well known for one main reason – they aren’t televised. To get a taste of what you can expect from the show you can watch last year’s awards ceremony here.Read More

SEGA Reveals Disney’s Castle of Illusion

Posted on April 15, 2013 by Jason Nason

SEGA revealed a new teaser trailer for Disney’s Castle of Illusion, starring Mickey Mouse, today. The teaser is an expanded look at an uber teaser they released last week. And while the game looks like it could be something to see, the most notable thing that I can see is the omission of Nintendo platforms for the game’s release.

The original Castle of Illusion was a a platformer game developed by Sega and released for the Sega Genesis and Sega Master System way back in 1990. That was followed up with a release on Sega’s portable Game Gear system in 1991. It is the first game in Sega’s Illusion series of video games starring Mickey Mouse. It was amongst the second wave of games initially released for the platform which helped seal the console’s reputation within the period until the release of Sonic the Hedgehog.Read More

Nintendo 3DS Direct Set for Wednesday

Posted on April 15, 2013 by Jason Nason

Nintendo put up a notice this morning that they will be streaming a new Nintendo 3DS Direct for North America on Wednesday, April 17 at 7am PT / 10am ET. While not a lot is known about what will be featured in the broadcast there could be a good focus on Animal Crossing, which will be released very soon for the system. There are some hoping that the popular Japanese Nintendo title Tomodachi Collection: New Life could see an announcement of a North American release.

We’ll let you know what is revealed on Wednesday, or you can watch it live at Nintendo.com.

Injustice: Gods Among Us Launch Event Report

Posted on April 15, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

DC Comic’s stable of superheroes and villains is quite a diverse group; where else are you going to find a crime fighter dealing with the trauma of his parent’s murder years after the fact; the last member of an alien race with our solar system’s sun fueling his powers; and a clown so insane no one is quite sure of his origin? For years Detective Comics have brought us some of the most memorable and enduring comic book characters, and NetherRealm studios have brought a number of them to life in their latest brawl, Injustice: Gods Among Us.

WB Interactive held a public launch event for the upcoming game at Toronto’s Dundas Square over the weekend, where fans could get their hands on the PlayStation 3 version of the game, as well as a chance to meet the co-creator of Mortal Kombat, Ed Boon, at an autograph session. We were fortunate enough to attend both events, and after kicking some superhero ass and shaking hands with one of the industry’s greats, we’re ready to shine the batsignal with our initial impressions of Injustice.Read More

Foundry Perspective On Neverwinter

Posted on April 14, 2013 by Les Major

This being the fourth Beta weekend for Neverwinter right now I’ve been eager to get back into the game. I enjoyed the third beta weekend. During the week I did some homework getting to know Cryptic’s Star Trek Online so I could relate between the two games. The two do have their similarities but they are their own games as well. If you haven’t tried out Star Trek yet and you are a fan of the franchise I do recommend it. Even just to see the sights, it’s a fun trip.

One thing I didn’t get to try in Neverwinter was the Foundry. It turns out Star Trek Online even had a Foundry for gamers to create their own adventures. I’ve tried a couple Star Trek missions recently and I played some Neverwinter quests and both games have been quite enjoyable. Unfortunately I haven’t gotten in to the creation tool myself yet so the magic hasn’t been spoiled for me, but the system does seem to allow for quite a bit of story telling.Read More

Trion Worlds Releases First Post Launch Patch For Defiance

Posted on April 12, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Trion Worlds released its ambitious, yet lukewarmly received, shooter title Defiance two weeks ago and the developers are already working on their first post-launch patch due out next week.

A client side patch will allow players to replay the main story missions after completing them, improving the quality of in-game pop-up menus and allowing voice/text chat channels to be muted independent of each others. These aren’t exactly world changing features but it is nice to see the devs adding new options for those who wish to play the game solo, or mute out annoying kids screaming over their headsets!

Trion will also be issuing a week-long bonus to XP, Loot and an exclusive in-game item, the Daredevil, to all players who signed up during the game’s launch week due to some technical issues. It’s always nice to see developers making amends when something goes wrong.

Defiance is a third person shooter developed by Trion Worlds that was released recently and one of its main selling points is the eventual tie-in with the SyFy show of the same name. Set in a future San Francisco Bay, players can choose to either to become a member of an alien race, or you know stay human, and play with thousands of other players. Reviewers have stated that the game’s pacing is a little slow but a smooth launch and a strong collection of collectable weapons have boosted its review scores among critics.

Second Dimension: The Warrior’s Code Interview

Posted on April 12, 2013 by Broken Joysticks

The fighting game community (FGC) has grown from holding local events to smaller venues to occupying ballrooms at four-star establishments with talent from all across the globe attending. Major sponsors such as Capcom, Namco Bandai, and others are responsible for the development of some of the world’s most famous franchises in gaming, and are showcased at a central tournament featuring the top fighting talent from across the world. With major prize pools, fighting games are now reaching a platform that can be compared to traditional eSports.

Each week, I’ll be posting interviews I’ve had the pleasure of conducting with members of the fighting game community. The interviews will touch upon their history in the FGC, where they got their start, and what they’d like to see from video games in general.

This weeks guest is a man who’s becoming a household name in the world of Street Fighter x Tekken: Sareth Sok a.k.a. KS | CORN Sethlolol.Read More

Disney: Infinity ‘Toy Box’ Trailer Opens Your Creative Mind

Posted on April 12, 2013 by Joshua Rust

Disney looks to take aim at the Skylanders market when it releases Disney Infinity August 18th, 2013.  I don’t want to go as far to say that Disney Infinity is a complete clone of the Skylanders franchise, but it takes quite a bit from it and builds on to an amazing concept. One of the main differences between the two is in Infinity you can open up the Toy Box (if you’ve played Toy Story 3 you should be somewhat familiar with what it is) and create a whole unique world. Either by building on to already created worlds or starting completely from scratch.Read More

Sacred Citadel Launches Next Week For PSN, XBLA, & Steam

Posted on April 11, 2013 by Joshua Rust

Deep Silver and SouthEnd Interactive are set to release Sacred Citadel next week, Wed. April 17th, for XBLA, PSN, & Steam. Sacred Citadel is part side-scrolling brawler, a bit RPG, and a game you will want to have some co-op buddies around for. It does support both online and offline 3 player co-op, so go find your co-op friends and get them ready for it.

There are four different character/classes that you can control (see videos of each after the jump). There is the Safiri Warrior, Khukuri Shaman, Ancarian Ranger, & the Seraphim Mage. It’s pretty obvious where three of the four characters skill will lie, but the Khukuri Shaman is basically your cleric. So there is pretty much a character for every style, be it fighter, archer, mage, or healer.Read More
