New Pokemon Go Details Emerge From The Tall Grass

Posted on May 25, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Today Pokemon Go publisher Nintendo released new information about how gym battles and shops will work in the beta version of the smartphone game. Prior to this announcement we’ve seen similar details leak out from folks who are in the current “Pokemon Go Field Test” in Japan but today marks the first official confirmation about the mechanics behind Gyms.

In Pokemon Go players take on the role of a Pokemon trainer, just like in previous main entries in the series, only this time instead of exploring the world of Kanto or other fictional regions the player’s GPS and camera from their smartphone supply the backdrop for Pokemon battles.  Gyms will be located in real world locations allowing trainers to take their journey to be the greatest to familiar locales. Gyms will operate differently from those in the main games – the reigning champion will be a real player whose team is stationed in the gym even when they are not nearby. Players can defeat the gym by defeating the gym by reducing its “prestige points” to zero. A gym’s prestige points can be increased by other trainers choosing to train the Pokemon with the defending team. Once the current leader has been disposed the new Gym leader will have their pokemon team stationed at the gym until it is defeated.

In order to take on a gym trainers are going to need the basics – potions and pokeballs – at the very least to even begin their journey. Pokemon Go has potential trainers covered with locations called PokeStops which function like the shops from the main games. These locations will be positioned in well known locations like historical sites, art installations and monuments. This should ensure that trainers will be able to access their essentials regardless of where they might be.

Nintendo and Niantic have confirmed that the game will be free-to-play with optional micro transactions on both Android and iOS. No release date has yet to be revealed but several regional field tests have been conducted in Japan and the North American field test began today.

Nintendo Has Cancelled The Pokemon Go GDC Presentation

Posted on March 3, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Pokemon trainers looking to get their first real details about Pokemon GO outside of promotional trailers will be disappointed to learn that Nintendo has cancelled the GDC presentation for the game. The official event page on the GDC tittle has simply been updated to include“CANCELLED” in the title.

In a statement issued to GameSpot about the abrupt event cancellation Niantec CEO John Hanke explained that they chose to cancel the highly anticipated event to focus on the Pokemon GO beta.

“We have decided to forego our GDC talk on Pokemon Go in order to focus on getting the product ready for beta test and launch. As much as we hate to disappoint those in the industry attending GDC, we feel our time and energy right now are best spent on making sure every aspect of the product is where we want it to be,”

Pokemon Go is expected to release later this year for Android and iOS devices.

Japan To Get A Real Life Pokemon Gym Next Month

Posted on October 21, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

The Pokemon Company will be bringing the series’ popular gyms into the real world with the establishment of a real life Pokémon Gym in Osaka, Japan starting on November 19th. This education experience aimed at children will allow them to learn Pokémon training tips, collect in-game rewards for participating. Visitors to the Gym can even have a conversation with a Pokémon, although I am not quite sure how that would work!

There are some really cool images of the exhibit over at Inside Games, who first reported on the new exhibit. These images include a very large life-like Charizard. All of the text in the source article is in Japanese, so be prepared for that!

This Pokemon Gym is quite different from the ones in any of the main series titles, such as 2013’s Pokemon X & Y. There are no trainers to battle and as far as I can tell no badges to collect. Trainers looking for an experience closer to the journeys featured in the games might want to consider either Nintendo’s Pokemon Leagues or Official Tournaments.  Leagues allow trainers to complete Gym Challenges by meeting up weekly with other trainers in their area. Official Tournaments are of course reserved for larger events like New York Comic Con.

Pokemon GO is getting a huge amount of funding from big names

Posted on October 16, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

Google, Nintendo, and the Pokemon Company are reportedly pouring money on to Niantic Labs, the developer of Pokemon GO.  Pokemon go the recently announced AR pokemon game made by the company that made Ingress was launched to incredible fanfare in early September of this year. Initial reports said the PR demo video was too good to be true, but reports coming out of the company now cite Google, Nintendo and The Pokemon Company as each pouring at least 10 million dollars each in to the games development. Initial worries that the game was not to be a core property and that it would suffer a quality drop because it was a mobile game, seem to have been silenced by this avalanche of money.

The CEO of Niantic, John Hanke, spoke briefly about where the newly acquired funds would be headed.

“The Pokémon Company, Google and Nintendo are incredible investors and strategic partners to help build the next chapter for Niantic. We will be using this capital to continue the development of Pokémon GO, to evolve and grow Ingress and its thriving global community, and to build out our real-world gaming platform.”

We still know very little about how the new game might work, but Ninite has experience developing AR games in the past, and I for one trust them to not take this IP and damage it. To see what we do know about the game already check out the video below.

Latest Pokemon Game Merges Monsters and The Real World

Posted on September 10, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Are you to catch your favorite Pocket Monster with a brand new alternate reality game that blends several hundred monsters and the real world? Nintendo is bringing its monstrous creature collecting franchise, Pokemon ,to Android and iOS in 2016 the company announced yesterday.

Using your phone’s built in camera and GPS Pokemon Go will enable players to search their neighbourhood for virtual monsters and allow them to capture and trade them between your friends. The game will have in-app purchases Nintendo confirmed in their press release but did not touch upon whether or not the app will be free-to-play.

The absolutely excellent debut trailer showcases Pokemon Trainers from all around the world catching monsters using their phones. It brings to mind questions like “will Nintendo have region specific Pokemon exclusive to certain real world countries?”. The trailer ends with an example of a public event with dozens of trainers gathering together to battle MewTwo in Times Square!

Pokemon Go will be available on the IOS App Store and Android Playstore sometime in 2016. Hopefully more details will be available soon!
