October has never respected my bank account, but this week is something else. Thursday, October 8 might be one of the most crowded single release days in recent memory, and all three major storefronts have sales ending within days. Here’s what’s new and what’s cheap across Steam, Nintendo, and PlayStation. (Prices converted to approximate CAD.)
Steam: Autumn Sale ends October 8
Valve’s Autumn Sale wraps up October 8 at 10am PT, with over 25,000 games and DLC packs discounted. The headliners are genuinely fresh: Resident Evil Requiem is down 30% to about $70 CAD just seven months after launch, and 007 First Light — out since May — matches it at roughly $70 CAD. Metaphor: ReFantazio at around $40 CAD (60% off) is the one I’d actually pounce on.
The silly-cheap classics are where Steam gets dangerous: Portal 2 for about $3 CAD, Hitman World of Assassination for ~$4, Control for ~$9, and Red Dead Redemption 2 for ~$21. I don’t need another copy of Portal 2. I’m going to buy another copy of Portal 2.
New releases: AION 2 is out now and free-to-play, Gears of War: E-Day and STAR WARS: Galactic Racer both land October 6 (~$100 and ~$86 CAD), and Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival brings the Cenobites on October 8 for ~$57 CAD. Oh, and two freebies: the Drakin Armoury pack for Rotwood and Scrubdesignz liveries for MXGP 26 are free-to-keep until October 15.

Nintendo: Switch 2 keeps eating
The October 1 Nintendo Download was a banger for Switch 2 owners. Minecraft Dungeons II and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered headline it — and if you already own Witcher 3 on Switch, the Switch 2 upgrade is free, which is the kind of consumer-friendly move I wish was standard. Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 are both there at ~$86 CAD each, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Game of the Year Edition is a downright silly ~$29 CAD, and Epic Mickey: Rebrushed arrives October 6.
Sales-wise, the Ubisoft 40th Anniversary sale ends October 7 with Assassin’s Creed Shadows at ~$47 CAD and Star Wars Outlaws Gold Edition at ~$51 CAD. Both Mario + Rabbids games — 85 on Metacritic, both of them — are about $17 CAD for the pair until October 8. And the Castlevania Advance Collection (Aria of Sorrow alone justifies it) is ~$9 CAD until October 8.
PlayStation: Thursday is chaos
October 8 is genuinely absurd on PS5: nine games in a single day, headlined by the Kingdom Hearts Collection (~$107 CAD for the full saga, with early access from October 6 for pre-orders) and Hellraiser: Revival. Also out that day: Neon Abyss 2, the time-loop Metroidvania Echo Weaver, and — the one I’m most curious about — Order of the Sinking Star, the new puzzler from Braid and The Witness designer Jonathan Blow. Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen follows on October 9.
PlayStation Plus members get F1 25, Hunt: Showdown 1896, and Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 starting October 6. And the Autumn Adventures sale (600+ games, ends October 7) has Hades 2 at ~$30 CAD, Starfield at ~$43 CAD, and the entire Shadowrun Trilogy — three superb RPGs — at ~$14 CAD. That last one is 75% off and, frankly, the best value on this entire list.

So — what’s eating your wallet this week: the horror triple-header landing Thursday, or the last hours of the Autumn sales?
