CHARTED: Week Ending January 4, 2014

Posted on January 18, 2014 by Jason Nason

Previously I’ve been looking just at Nintendo’s titles in the top thirty to see where they stack, but this time I’m going to instead take a look at just the top ten games for both the USA and Japan.

It’s amazing to see the differences in the top tens between the two territories. There is only one game from Nintendo systems in the top ten in the United States for the week ending January 5th, 2014, with the title being Pokémon X/Y for the 3DS. The highest ranked Wii U game is actually Super Mario 3D World, which landed on the chart at 16. Interestingly enough Ubisoft’s Just Dance 2014 for the Wii landed at number 6.

Taking a look at the Japan top ten we see a different story, with games from Nintendo systems taking up eight of the top ten spots. Only Square Enix’s recently released Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster on PS3 and PS Vita could crack into the top ten.

Take a look at the full top ten rankings for the USA and Japan.

Posted on November 16, 2013 by Jason Nason

Nintendo announced on Thursday that the Nintendo 3DS is once again the best-selling video game hardware system in North America. The handheld sold more than 452,000 units sold in October and sold double that of September.

Software sales were strong for Nintendo as well with Pokémon X and Pokémon Y as the number 1 and number 2 top-selling titles last month. The titles sold more than 1.7 million units combined and helped lead October as the biggest month for Nintendo 3DS software all year. Total Nintendo 3DS first-party software sales hit more than 2 million units sold, the highest tally since December 2011.

Madden NFL 25 and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn were the big debuts in the North American charts this week, which dropped several Nintendo holdouts. The lone release in the top ten on a Nintendo console this week was Disney Infinity for Wii, which was the best selling platform for the game in its second week.

The highest Nintendo release this week in North America was New Super Luigi U, which debuted at #11 with just over 23,000 units sold.

Pikmin 3 is holding on at #17 after 8 weeks in Japan however the game is not doing as well in North America and has fallen out of the top 30 after just four weeks.

Disney Infinity was a big seller in its first week at retail. The top selling platform was the Xbox 360 followed by the Nintendo Wii with 79,472 copies sold on Nintendo’s platform. Between the three versions sold on Nintendo platforms (Wii, Wii U & 3DS) the game sold 128,484 making it a solid first week for Disney’s venture into Skylanders territory.

Across the Pacific another Disney game is still seeing success with the 3DS game Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life from Namco Bandai sitting in the number two spot after four weeks out in Japan.

Nintendo’s newest big release The Wonderful 101 doesn’t seem to be fairing too well in Japan so far landing in the #13 spot, one spot below Pikmin 3 which has been out for seven weeks. The game has sold 5,765 in the first week. The game hits store shelves in North America in a few weeks.
