Warframe – Proving F2P Can Work

Posted on April 2, 2016 by Broken Joysticks

Author’s note: The free-to-play pricing model I discuss here is in regards to games that can be played without spending any money, rather than the label that MMORPG games use when they don’t require a subscription fee (but still do require an initial purchase). I will also be intentionally not talking about the majority of gameplay, to instead focus on Warframe’s free-to-play aspect.

It’s not uncommon for the gaming community to dismiss a title, even if it looks promising, if it releases with a free-to-play payment model. I admit that when I see the words ‘free to play’ attached to a game, even I immediately assume the worst: Microtransactions designed to gouge the player’s wallet, important game content gated by paywalls, or (usually in PvP games) a pay-to-win scenario. It’s a stigma that free-to-play games aren’t entirely undeserving of. But just because the payment model usually doesn’t work, does it mean that it can’t?Read More

Team Fortress 2: Over the Years

Team Fortress 2

Late 2009 would be one hell of a year for me with online gaming, starting with me playing a console online for the first time: a friend’s Xbox 360. Battlefield Bad Company was still going hot, and Modern Warfare 2 would be coming out shortly. Before then, all of my online gaming consisted of PC games Doom, Quake, and Unreal Tournament ’99, so I started exploring “modern” online gaming. I logged into steam for the first time in a long time to see what I could get, and I eventually bought Half-Life Deathmatch. Eventually, I saw a game called Team Fortress 2 that I wanted and told some of my friends on IRC that I wanted to eventually buy it. For people wondering about the the need to buy it, it wasn’t until June 23rd, 2011 Team Fortress 2 was free to play. Read More

Star Wars: The Old Republic Adds Free Accounts Nov. 15th

Posted on November 9, 2012 by Les Major

Like many MMO’s lately, Star Wars: The Old Republic is adding a limited free account to the subscription based game. Some content is restricted or closed off entirely, but if you’re eager to see what The Old Republic is all about, this is a great way to give in a whirl.

Many see this as a step back but I think it’s a fantastic idea. I liked the look of SW:TOR when my MMO gaming friend got into it, but I just couldn’t justify the cost. This way you can personally get in there and see what the game has to offer and if it’s right for you. Are these the droids your looking for? Find out November 15th! Less than one week away.
